State of Play

Sony is primed and ready to deliver a new State of Play livestream in September, if new rumours are to be believed. Jeff Grubb of Giant Bomb took to Twitter overnight to share he's heard "a State of Play is coming", and given Sony's recent track record of hosting events like the PlayStation Showcase in September, it seems like we're only a few weeks away from the company's next info dump.

The reliable journalist then adds yesterday's controversial PS Plus price increase feels like a "lead-in" for the State of Play, which may suggest we'll hear why Sony feels it needs to raise the cost by so much. That's just speculation, though.

What could Sony spotlight during a State of Play livestream next month? Marvel's Spider-Man 2 would obviously receive a lot of attention, and from a first-party perspective, Helldivers 2 is still slated to release this year. There's also Rise of the Ronin, which is rumoured to be launching in early 2024. Both PS5 titles could get firm release dates during such an event.

Of course, expectations should be kept in check given the rumour is this livestream is a State of Play rather than a full PlayStation Showcase, but Sony has been doing a better job with its lesser format as of late. During last year's State of Play in September, the aforementioned Rise of the Ronin was announced alongside Tekken 8 and Like a Dragon: Ishin!. There was also a story trailer for God of War Ragnarok.
