Re: Sony's New First-Party Studio Working on Lighthearted Team-Based Action Game for PS5

joeyflannel

@LogicStrikesAgain I'm less worried about the financial stakes and more worried about the opportunity cost. Every second a developer works on a live service game that either fails or gets canceled is a day they could have spent working on a single player game, or even a single player game with a traditional multiplayer suite. Bluepoint could have already had a remaster released, or a single player game well into development, but we had them working on a God of War live service game for years? Despite them having no experience or expertise making such a game? What are we doing here?

EDIT: I read YOUR edit, and understand we're somewhat on the same page here. BTW I should point out that I think Ubisoft are outta their MINDS for repeatedly trying to enter the live service market. They can't take a hint!

@themightyant You're missing the forest for the trees of what I'm saying.

-The Show is an institution that has existed for decades; people play it habitually.
-Sony didn't own Bungie during 90% of Destiny 2's lifecycle.
-Helldivers 2 is not a game developed by a 1st party studio.
-Gran Turismo has microtransactions, sure, but that hardly makes it a live service.

My point is that it is foolish for Sony to invest hundreds of millions of dollars having their own studios develop a live service game with the hopes of making blockbuster.

You yourself said, "On top of that they can see that most of the top 20 most played games are live services and the highest grossing games are all live services." EXACTLY. And how many of those live service games in the top 20 were developed by Sony first party studios? That was my point. We cannot forget Concord. We cannot forget the years that Bluepoint and Sony Bend just lost working on canceled live service games. That was my point.

Re: Unsurprisingly, Final Fantasy 7 Remake's Future May Not Be PS5 Exclusive

@EvilBear Yeah, Resi does have a strong Nintendo connection too because of the Gamecube, and I assume most of the modern ones will get ported to Switch 2.
I have played Crash on Xbox many times, and just something about it didn't feel right to me, which is probably just my brain.
On the inverse, something like Dishonored or Bioshock is deeply rooted in Xbox for me. If/when we get another entry in one of those series, even if they ran better on PS5 Pro, I'm still playing them on an Xbox console (assuming those exist in a few years lol)

Re: Poll: Are You Sold on Borderlands 4?

joeyflannel

Borderlands 1 is good, and very nostalgic. 2 is an all-time great game. Top to bottom, one of the best of the generation. 3 is...good? Fun? It very, VERY quickly became a quintessential example of a "podcast game." Play while listening to something and just shoot. No thoughts, head empty.

I'm excited for Borderlands 4 for the gameplay. If the writing is better than 3, great! If not, it's fine, too. I'll just listen to something else and have fun regardless

Re: As Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Passes 2 Million Players, Ubisoft Teases More to Come

Unless they're referring to the Sands of Time remake as the series "continuing," I don't know what they're talking about. They disbanded the team! IIRC no one from the team was fired, but they're working on different Ubi games. Would they really go through the trouble of getting the band back together? I mean, good on em if so, but that makes the decision to split them up even more baffling.

Great game btw, which I feel like can be lost in this discussion

Re: Days Gone's Review Scores Have Been Rising Over Time, with PS5 Version Coming Highly Recommended

joeyflannel

I still think the original was sabotaged by reviewers who were given an unpatched build that ran like garbage. Some reviews from 2019 mentioned technical problems that NEVER popped up in the commercial release.

I haven't played this since it launched, but I remember really liking it, despite thinking it was a bit too long. But what game from the last decade isn't a big too long?
