Remedy’s upcoming Control sequel will have a smaller budget than Alan Wake 2, but the Finnish firm is still confident it can make an excellent experience.
CEO Tero Virtala confirmed the tidbit in an interview with Game File, revealing that the cost of his company’s previous game was “quite a bit higher” than the €50 million (~$57 million) it’s raised for Control 2. The budget is being split between Remedy itself and Annapurna Interactive.
In this era of ballooning development budgets, a new game costing less than its immediate predecessor is unusual. But Virtala believes the team can still create an “excellent” experience.

He explained that with this sensible financial approach applied, it can “break-even per game” at just two million units. If it creates an release that performs much better commercially, “then we are really happy”.
Honestly, in an industry marred by ever-increasing expectations, these comments are really refreshing. It sounds like Remedy is well-aware of its constraints, and it’s working within those to deliver the best experiences it possibly can.
As Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 recently proved, a well-scoped and budgeted game can not only become a critical success, it can also be a commercial hit, too.
Personally, we really enjoyed the original Control, so we can’t wait to see what the team’s been cooking behind-the-scenes.

This sounds more like a cry for help. If i remember correctly, Alan Wake 2 did not make much of a profit. This lowering of their budget is more out of necessity and financial strain, than anything else. As they said, they have to scale it down, so they can at least break even, without having to rely on that many sales.
Yeah, i know, they made it work with Clair Obscur, but still, a budget of $50M for triple A gaming is not much (i wonder if that includes budget for marketing?)
I’m not saying they can’t do it, cause they have before. But i would understand if they’re also a bit dissapointed that thats all they get to work with. I wish them luck
Honestly, Remedy seems like a perfect acquisition target, they are very talented, but just have trouble with raising the capital. They could fare much better with a bigger publisher who has the capital to support them and has the insight to let them cook.
Obviously i’m biased, but i think they’d do well under Playstation, they’re a perfect match in terms of game types and Sony has a good reputation of giving their studios the creative freedom they need.
But they’d probably do great under any publisher who has the capital to support them
I wish Remedy success. Alan Wake 2’s the best game yet this generation, Control’s my second favorite game of last generation, and Alan Wake 1 was my favorite 360 exclusive the generation prior. I need them to have their wins!
As long as they don't hire you know who,,than it will probably be a commercial success
Will this one have a map that isn't awful?
Control itself was made on a shoestring budget so I’ll be there day one.
Remedy are one of the best developers around and I’ll always support their work, masters of creativity.
@LogicStrikesAgain yeah agreed. Sony should snap them up. A few hundred million would look like a bargain vs bungie.
just completed and got platinum last month for Control, The game is ok but there are a lot of things they could improve on, will keep an eye out for any type of showcase on it.
Control was €30m and they’ve said previously the budget is bigger than that. AWII got 100% funded by Epic but all those gravy trains have dried up unfortunately. Now’s the time, all across the industry, for looking down the back of the couch to try to scrape together a few extra pennies.
There’s still a ton of money to be made in the industry but I’d guess the investor’s are spooked because they have little ability to discern a hit from a massive flop. Also, the entire landscape of the industry can change in between development starting and the game being released.
@Vectrex The Max Payne games are getting a full remake Double pack, and it will be out before Control 2.
@LogicStrikesAgain I agree with you about Sony acquiring them. I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet because it seems like it would work well for both parties.
With Alan Wake turning a profit(not as much as they hoped probably), Sony giving them a little extra money to fund their games could definitely help.
@QBGaming12 I believe Alan Wake 2 has only started making profit recently.
@Oram77 yeah I remember hearing about that a few months ago. I'm sure Remedy want to keep there Independence for as long as possible but I feel like it's inevitable. If Sony purchased them they would probably let them keep making stuff multi-platform just like Bungie(with Remedy being a better studio).
See this is the thing now this generation with the consoles and the consoles capabilities.
It’s is only part of the story, this generation is more about budget and the budget then dictates the use of the consoles capabilities.
Just look at the time and budget for GTA6 that really will fully utilise the consoles power.
Basically this generation it’s not much to do with console power but the budget and time to use the consoles power and there definitely has not been much of that this generation I’m afraid.
All good! It’ll be a day one buy for me regardless.
I'm pleased to see the people who are commenting here actually realize this isn't a "oh they want to follow 33 example" and it's actually they reacting to the fact that Alan Wake 2 took year and a half to be profitable.
That's a loooong time for an independent studio, even longer for a studio that's looking to start self publishing their own games. Their service is the first game they are going to self publish, it has a price but will go directly to PS+ extra and that tells you how they are moving minimizing the risks of not making any money.
So that's Alan Wake, Alan Wake 2, Control and now Control 2 to the backlog.
Loved Control. Hope they release physically at launch. Feel the digital approach hurt Alan Wake 2 in the long run
Wow, spend less money and maybe it won’t take as long to make a profit. Glad Remedy put two and two together!
I really enjoyed Control and even if I didn’t care for AW2 all that much, I’ll leap on Control 2.
Hope they don’t pull an AW2 and skip a physical release for a year. That was a big mistake on their part.
The original Control was excellent - intriguing and scary in equal amounts.
Got into playing the original on the PS4 Pro and it played smooth as anything and I don't think I encountered any bugs.
Couldn't be bothered to restart on the PS5 as the saves didn't transfer for some still-unexplained reason?
people continue to misunderstand the AW2 gambit. basically they got a blank check for it from Epic, which allowed them to make a big swing to revitalize a frankly moribund series and to put it back on the map. it did that. that something that wantonly overbudgeted and ultimately slightly niche has managed to break even means that A LOT of people bought that game who wouldn't have if it were budgeted more reasonably. which means that they now have a much larger built-in audience for when they do make a more sensibly budgeted and scoped AW3.
I'm all for games that are of smaller, tighter scope; Control 1 is testament to how a AAA studio working with a AA budget and scope can be absolutely fire.
@Splat If you needed to rely on the map in Control, you weren't paying attention.
Also, in a game about traversing a weird, unknowable, deeply liminal building... where is the fun in relying on the map?
I say this as a designer who hates ***** interfaces. But Control's was, as I interpreted it, an aesthetic choice. It added to the ambiance and feeling of unease prevalent throughout - and key to - the experience.
As may have said before me, Remedy would be a banner PS Studios acquisition. They'd likely help strengthen the portfolio beyond their singular output as long as they were allowed to do as they please.
After finishing Alan Wake 2 recently, I absolutely CANNOT WAIT for Control 2!!! Remedy is on fire right now!
That's €20 million more than the first game, which already felt AAA. I have 100% trust in Remedy. There's really nobody else like them right now.
(p.s. major reason why remedy hasn't been bought by sony is that they want independence. they are looking ahead to self publish very soon and are incredibly smart developers.)
Remedy could make a game with a budget of $25 and a pack of Newports, and I'm sure it'd be a masterpiece
It could be even more excellent if it had a psvr2 mode.
I'm confident it'll be excellent too, based on Control and Alan Wake 2. So much so that I'll be pre-ordering it when its available for that. And I RAAAAAAAARELY ever do that anymore.
I will support Remedy. Freaking love Control and Alan wake 2. So hyped for Control 2. Wish them luck
Never been a big fan of Remedy games but I've also kind of gotten away from horror titles as I've gotten older and Something about Control just felt off for me with the...controls lol. I can completely see why they are a highly regarded developer though. I am excited for the Max Payne remakes for sure
Sony's history with games with 7 letter titles beginning with CON tells me they should stay the **** away.
Loved Control. Really liked AW2
Really looking forward to this.
Does this mean Control 2 would be coming sooner than expected?
If the price and scope is similar to the original, I'd be okay with it.
It's one of those I would never replay it twice but already played last-gen at launch.
Something about the game being eerily desolate bothers me, the same tension I would get from watching Buried.
Hoping Remedy can bring an entire different feel for the sequel that we haven't yet seen~🤞
