Dokyusei: Bangin’ Summer, the remake of an erotic 90s dating sim for PC-98, is out now worldwide on the PS4 for $24.99/£19.99.
This version is based on old Windows port from 1999, which toned down the script significantly. Expect some light romantic drama, then – but none of the naughtiness of the original.
“With mere months left before graduation, one young man has got a plan,” the official blurb reads.
“He's spent the first half of his summer making bank, and now he's out to break it – and break some hearts in the bargain!

“But over the course of just three weeks, you'll come to love and understand these girls and pick one to be with in this comedic coming-of-age drama.”
The game’s been available on PC for a few years now, and launched in Japan in 2024 on the PS4. But this is the first time the console version has received an international release, so it marks a milestone moment in that sense.
Obviously this won’t be to everyone’s tastes, but if you’re a fan of visual novels and dating sims, then it may very well be worth a shot. And there’s a free demo available if you’re on the fence.

I have only one question. Why is her watering-can upside down.
I had no idea what this was, but I decided to try the demo and like what I played. Definitely going to grab it when it's on sale.
Why is it iconic?
"but none of the naughtiness of the original" Was this some sort of Hentai-VN originally?
Playing this on console is like sitting down to watch a porno without any of the sex scenes in it.
@GirlVersusGame Asking the real questions
@dodgykebaab I just closed on my first home. There's a garden but it's Uncharted territory. I considered buying that cosy garden sim (not this one) on PS5 to get some practice in before I start doing whatever it is you're supposed to do back there.
Pointless to release the censored version of a game readily available unmolested.
So the title is a lie he isn't banging anything this summer 😏
@thefourfoldroot1 Mmmm probably could have whipped out the thesaurus for that one, given the subject matter
@Acquiescence Common practice with VNs. They have much more than sex scenes and tell actual stories without them. In fact, many VNs have sex in them because it’s a common practice, not because it fits the story or the creator even wants them.
Sometimes they aren’t even in the story and are just a main menu option after you beat the game.
This is cool to see. The Steam release of this got crazy censored (like kissing from the reviews I saw), so this will probably be a reasonable release that has porn removed, but the baby doesn’t get thrown out with the bathwater.
@Lowdefal
All it shows is that there will always be people who won’t research enough to find out content has been stolen from them, and so buy anyway. And of course patches are often released afterwards on PC, because it’s often the only way not to risk a games release due to archaic, puritanical, rules.
@joeyflannel
Strange comment there. What subject matter makes my choice of words objectionable to you?
@thefourfoldroot1 i personally would not use the term "unmolested" when describing a dating sim about underaged girls
@thefourfoldroot1 Believe it or not some of us want VNs but not porn. Not to mention the consoles releases will often enough come out with new scenes to replace the explicit ones, like with Nekopara’s excellent console releases.
I would never play the adult versions of Nekopara, but I’ll be there day one for the console releases.
@LordAinsley
Underage? Oh, I must have missed that part! Yes, In which case it may have been a poor word choice, apologies.
I don’t know the game, but surely they can’t have lewd behaviour with kids?! Even back in the 90s that wouldn’t have been allowed!
Are you sure you aren’t mistaken? Do you know their ages?
@Jaz007
In general, if any story is written specifically with sexual relationships, removing them damages the story, as it would be damaged by removing any other aspect of character interaction. Although someone above said this had kids being sexualised which makes me think the game should never see the light of day in any incarnation.
Honestly, I played and completed all the routes on PC. If you are able, play it on PC with the full uncensored patch - the way it intended to be played.
Yes, there will be sex scenes with the full patch, but Dokyussei still manages to make it beautiful and respectful because at the core of the game it was still about consent.
But the patch absolutely unlocked much more than that. Just an excerpt from my review on Steam:
"Now let's get to meat of the game, this is first and foremost an adult Dating Game, so an 18+ patch is required to significantly improve the game and elevate the story. Playing this game without the 18+ patch honestly felt like a disservice to how well written the entire stories are. Not only having the patch unlocks nudity and sex, but it also made the MC feels a lot more human and relatable. Yes, he uses a lot of crude and adult jokes (being an 18 years old guy after all), but that make the moments of his chivalry and understanding (as well as his character's growth by the end of the game) really shines and charming. This is probably the best written MC I've played with in a long while for this genre (with 18+ patch). Not to mention it's amazing how self-aware this game was as some of the MC inner dialogues will break the 4th wall when you're trying to do something he disagrees with.
The 14 heroines covers all the woman archetypes for a dating sim, so you'll definitely find one of you'll vibe with. From gilded bird princess, a childhood friend, your kohai, all the way to the bombshell school's doctor that's really out of your league. All these heroines are very well written and each of their personality really shines that you can't help but play the game till you unlock all 14 different endings. I can't tell how many times I've laughed from the MC response or cried with the story as you progress..."

One of the best dating games I've played, but only with the full patch.
I'd heard the name before probably from visual novel videos or 16 Bit Sensation manga/anime mentioned it a few times due to it's focus on PC-98 titles and impactful dating sims.
I might check this out.
@GirlVersusGame The watering can isn't upside down, that's how the spouts on them are designed.
@J0HN_L0CKE Thanks, I ended up doing a little research on spouts afterwards. Which isn't what it sounds like either.
