@Scottyy I completely agree. The optics of Sony releasing another live service game that fails will be catastrophic. Not to mention the financial hit they'll take.
That's if it fails. Whilst this will never be my type of game, I won't get any joy if it does. The only positive for me would be that Sony stops this current chase to find a unicorn cash cow.
The PlayStation store needs massive improvements. The Xbox store is by far the best of the main 3. The Switch store is easily the worst. I haven't tried the Switch 2 store yet but I've heard it's better. Weirdly, the PS app is much better for making purchases than the Xbox app.
Game Pass is a fantastic service where I've been able to play and then buy games I would have never considered buying previously. Cross Code is a prime example.
Also, nobody forces developers to put their games on Game Pass. It's a choice they make that makes business sense for them. All the better if they make their games available for purchase on other platforms.
This is another reason I'm so impressed with the way "new" Atari is operating. The people in charge made some very astute modern dev acquisitions while also maximising their incredible retro history with quality retro consoles.
@UltimateOtaku91 But I don't think the existing console model makes any sense in the future. I believe that we'll all have a disguised PC in a box that will be able to access content from the PS Store, Xbox Store, Steam etc.
You can currently buy the same games from places like Steam and Epic depending on your preference. You'll be able to buy those games via PlayStation if that's your preference but it will be via an app on the device rather than via bespoke PlayStation hardware.
I've said it a million times before but I'll say it again. Bespoke hardware will be an unnecessary expense for both Sony and Microsoft after the next generation.
It seems like Sony are finally realising that there won't be a market for the PS7 to exist in.
@Weebleman Exactly this. The difference between an SNES and Mega Drive version of a game could be night and day at times. The extra power and extra buttons on Nintendo's console didn't always equate to the ports being the best version either.
Nowadays, there's very little difference between any multiplatform games regardless of where you play.
The N64 version of trilogy had better graphics and loading times but far fewer characters, skins and fatalities than the PS1 version. Here's hoping for both or a remix of the 2.
It's an interesting strategy if true. I think we can all agree that performance increases from generation to generation are minimal at this point so having a system with a massive market price point makes a lot of sense. I still think this will be the last gen of dedicated consoles from anyone though.
Microsoft and Sony make little to no money on hardware. Microsoft making 70% on software sales for PS5 releases will definitely make Sony pay attention.
PlayStation will absolutely have a massive future in the games industry. But I'm fairly sure it will eventually be as an app that you can subscribe to and buy from. In the same way that you can stream or buy on Prime. There will be an app for Xbox, Nintendo etc.
However, if they ever take away the ability to "own" a game (like Netflix) then that will be the time I quit modern gaming and play my PS3 and Sega Saturn until I die.
@Reyzore That's the point. You won't need to buy a PlayStation (or any own brand console) to play PlayStation games. You'll still have the games but Sony won't need to spend billions on R&D, manufacturing, shipping, marketing etc.
@LogicStrikesAgain I don't think PlayStation as a brand will die within my lifetime and beyond. What I do think will die is the bespoke hardware model we currently have. The idea of people spending hundreds, if not thousands, of their hard earned $€£ on one machine that only plays certain games in 2040 seems ludicrous to me. That's why I don't believe there will ever be a PS7.
So many of the comments here are very strange to me. It seems they love other people not having things rather than actually having those things themselves. Or they love the console itself rather than the games.
The console is merely a delivery system to play amazing PlayStation games.
The games industry is actually way behind other forms of media and art.
Imagine if your favourite film could only be played on certain Blu-ray players, TVs or tablets. Or if your favourite album would only play on certain phones? It's a ridiculous thought but one that exists right now in the highest grossing form of media in the world.

Re: Don't Believe the Speculation About PS5's Fairgames Getting Cancelled
I also think that Sony should release this on Xbox and Switch 2 to give it the best chance of survival.

Re: Make Up Your Own Mind About Critically Panned PS1 Platformer Bubsy 3D from 9th September on PS5
I really enjoyed the Atari Jaguar version of Bubsy.

Re: The Outrageously Over-the-Top Fast & Furious Arcade Game Is Coming to PS5
Cruis’n Blast is a brilliant game and one of my most played on Switch.
This looks like it could be fun too.
Re: The Outrageously Over-the-Top Fast & Furious Arcade Game Is Coming to PS5
@CielloArc Split Second is fantastic and backwards compatible on Xbox.
Re: Sony Likens Its Fledgling Anime Business to the PS1 Era
Is it not worrying to anyone else for Sony to have such a huge chunk of the animé market?
Re: Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 Enhanced (PS5) - Cinematic Spectacle Offers Little Else
I actually really loved Hellblade 2. Not every game has to be a complex mashing of buttons.
Re: Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 Enhanced (PS5) - Cinematic Spectacle Offers Little Else
@Perturbator An Enslaved remake would be incredible. I adore that game and played through it again a few months ago on Xbox.
Re: Hideo Kojima Alone Is Currently Working on PlayStation Exclusive Physint
I would love for him to blow everyone's minds and to release it exclusively on PS3 in 2028.
Re: Round Up: Ninja Gaiden 4 Sounds Like the Slick, Brutal Sequel Fans Are Hoping For
Probably my second favourite game series after Uncharted. I love the look of this and it's going to be a day one buy for me.
I'm definitely in the minority but I really liked NG3 and N3:RE.

Re: Critically Acclaimed Compilation UFO 50 Is Skipping PS5 For Now
I hadn't even heard of this until today but now I'm hooked. Just need to decide which system to buy it for.
Re: Holy Sh*t! 90s Hack 'n' Cast Classics Heretic and Hexen Launch on PS5, PS4 Today
Amazing news and a fantastic price! Everyone should buy these.
Re: A Quote from a Sony Exec Is Causing a Hubbub Among PS5 Fans Again
@UltimateOtaku91 I was referring to third party titles. They will still be available across multiple stores.
But first party titles will be tied to individual store fronts.
Re: A Quote from a Sony Exec Is Causing a Hubbub Among PS5 Fans Again
@DaveTheRave Good god this such a childish post.

@Oram77 The console industry and the smartphone industry are completely different things.

Re: Sony Controlling More of Marathon Dev Bungie, Will Be Integrated into PS Studios
I still think that the cancelled The Last Of Us online game was Sony's best way to have a guaranteed live service hit.
Re: Phew! C. Viper's Turning Up the Temperature in Street Fighter 6 on PS5, PS4
I'm so sick and tired of fighting games not including all characters from the beginning.
Re: PS1's Mortal Kombat Trilogy Joins PS5, PS4 Legacy Kollection, Killer Physical Editions Announced
@get2sammyb I'd love to see all games up to and including MK9 released. Paid DLC wouldn't bother me at all.

@ILikeStake I kannot disagree.
Re: Mortal Kombat Trilogy Joins PS5, PS4 Legacy Kollection, Killer Physical Editions Announced
@get2sammyb @ILikeStake I'm fairly sure I did something similar to this post about 3 years ago. Sammy, help me out.

Re: Microsoft Reiterates It's the Top Publisher on PS5 in Earnings Call
@SeaDaVie But Microsoft have been making games since the 80s. And with Windows, you could argue they've done more for the games industry than Sony.
Indiana Jones and TGC wouldn't exist without Microsoft instigating the deal to make the game.
Re: Microsoft Reiterates It's the Top Publisher on PS5 in Earnings Call
I really wish that people would stop boring the world by saying "But Xbox bought..." Bethesda has been part of Xbox from 2021 and ABK from 2023.
How far back in time do we have to keep referencing these things? Those publishers, those studios, those franchises and those games are part of Xbox.
Get over it.
Re: Twisted Metal's Anticipated Second Season Debuts with Three Episodes
I've never played the games but someone shared a trailer for the first season with me the other day and damn it looked so ****ING good.
It has a real Grindhouse vibe that massively appeals to me.

This is just me being pedantic but, that's not the proper Atari logo. It's the one that Infogrames used many years ago.
Re: Sony's Horizon Franchise Has Sold a Wild 38 Million Units Worldwide
These are huge sales for a series that's perceived as the ginger step-child of PlayStation's first party line up.
I was never able to get into the first game but might try and give it another go.
Re: Sony Sues Tencent Over Horizon Copycat Coming to PS5
I love some of the overblown comments in cases like these. "Irreparable Injury". 😂
Re: Official PlayStation Fighting Stick Named FlexStrike, Out in 2026
That's a terrible name.
