All things considered, Final Fantasy VII Remake is off to a blistering start in terms of worldwide sales. Square Enix reports that the game has moved 3.5 million copies in just three days after its launch on the 10th April. That figure includes physical shipments and digital sales.
It's an impressive total, especially so when you consider the current state of the world. For reference, Final Fantasy XV moved around 5 million units in that same amount of time, but it didn't have to deal with stock shortages or closed shops, and it wasn't a PlayStation 4 exclusive.
Speaking of PS4 exclusives, God of War moved around 3.1 million copies at launch, while Marvel's Spider-Man -- the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive ever -- managed 3.3 million. However, those figures are based on sold through numbers, not shipments, so we can't say for sure whether Remake is actually the PS4's new sales champion.
In any case, it'll be interesting to see if Final Fantasy VII Remake can keep this up. The game's proven to be somewhat divisive, and we wonder whether word of mouth will have a noticeable impact on future sales. But at least for now, Remake's done very well for itself.

Great start. It will continue to climb, even with divisive nature (that is being amplified by the internet discourse), the game is great and should be played. And of course, the majority of people that buy games, never finish it.
i wouldn't say the game itself is divisive, more that people can't agree on what the ending means
but at least you can say it's got people talking
Not bad for a game with terrible trailers and quests that turn you into a bad guy eh?(couldnt resist, sorry)
One of my brothers that has never played a Final Fantasy game in his life bought this because he heard me and my other brothers talking about it. He loves it. Think this will sell really well over time!
@HungryWolf It's been interesting watching the game progress Trophies as they go from Rare to Common. I guess people are actually playing this one through!
@GamingFan4Lyf there are still a few Ultra Rare Bronze ones such as Staggering Feat: hit a enemy with a 300% Stagger gauge
but that one is quite hard to get to be fair
@FullbringIchigo Yeah, I am more talking about the ones like completing chapters. I have seen a few jump from Rare to Common.
@GamingFan4Lyf me too
If by divisive you mean some people complaining about the ending in a 40+ hour game than I guess? The game itself isn't that divisive though. Game has been a critical success across the board.
@FullbringIchigo
It means there will be a sequel.
I buy almost nothing on day one on the PS4, but I had the Deluxe Edition preordered last year. I have my issues with the game, but it's increasingly looking like it might be my favorite release of the year.
It's so satisfying to be able to be enthusiastic about the Final Fantasy brand again.
It's a really enjoyable game when you get the knack of the combat, which is quite similar to FFXIII's. Even the linear paths and look of some levels are quite similar to FFXIII, I think. Fortunately, the AVALANCHE crew are all likeable characters.
So pleased about this. This kind of success means the next part will be brought to next gen within 3.5 years. Genuinely fantastic game with an ending i was pleased with. I'm on my 2nd play through on hard mode
Its amazing. Well done Square Enix on your success.
Its delivered a massive sales spike in Japan for the forst time in ages too. Playstation has finally dethroned the switch (although thats likely also due to Nintendo's stock shortages).
Would be fascinating to know how well this game could have done in 'normal' circumstances
there is one thing i was wondering, do you think how the Remake plays might have been the kind of vision Nomura originally had for VsXIII/XV because i was watching the FFXV announcement trailer recently again and i see a few similarities
do you think peoples reception to XV would have been different if it did play like VII Remake?
@FullbringIchigo I think Remake's got one of the best combat systems in any Final Fantasy game. I think if XV had the same, it would have been the highlight of the release.
I don't think XV's combat is bad — aside from potion spamming against the hardest bosses — but it doesn't come close to Remake's, at least for me.
Good on them, also I'm glad it's well received because it guarantees this games completion in regards to the episodic outlay.
The one concern I had was that this wouldn't be seen through, or that we'd be waiting years between episodes. Here's hoping the financial success of this title spurs the company forward, and with gusto to complete the future installments.
@ShogunRok yeah potion spamming got me through the Adamantoise fight if i'm honest, still at least i did it before people cried it was too difficult and so Square put in the ability for the Ring to take it out
but it's not just in terms of battle mechanics the way the game flows and stuff feels similar too
take a look

@FullbringIchigo The main problem with 15 (in my opinion) was the over reliance on fetch quests for side missions; and -damingly for a final fantasy game - a really disjointed and poorly told story (even if the concept was good).
Too much happens off screen, or is told through other media. Like i got more out of watching the anime YouTube series (brotherhood?) about the relationships between the main cast than they conveyed in the game itself.
The battle system could be the best in the world, but if the story is poorly told you have an uphill battle.
I think 15 was a reaction to the criticism 13 got for being too linear - but a beautiful open world, without the content to fill it or to push you along is pointless
(As it is, i love FF 15, despite how critical i sound)
7 remake is genius though. As @shogunrok says, i defo think it has one of the best battle systems in any FF once you get used to it
@Rob_230 i love 7 Remakes battle system, it's so much fun and we know that the rest of the Remakes chapters will continue to use it (and probably refine it too) but i wonder if they will use it in any other future FF games
i said before but a FFVIII game (remake or sequel) would be amazing with 7r's battle system,
Great game. Well deserved. First FF game I trully enjoyed after FFX.
@FullbringIchigo Couple of things. Thanks for sharing that trailer for 15. I havent seen that in years and my goodness it looks so good. I kind of see where you are coming from.
I agree with you on 8. I really hope we see it one day. It deserves a ground up remake. But the game i REALLY want to see is final fantasy 9. My favourite game ever, with a new lick of paint would be magic.
I wonder if it might be too 'fantastical' for modern audiences though. 8 definitely seems more likely given the character models and story it would be working with. Get it in the FF7 remake engine and hopefully it could be built fairly quickly. Just imagine the mechanical spider sequence with FF7R battle systems and modern tech. Goosebumps
@Rob_230 oh i would love a 9 version too, i bloody love that game and i don't think it would be too fantastical, just look at Zidane in Dissidia for example, it would work
Is FF7 Remake an exclusive ? I thought it was confirmed for PC next year ?
@FullbringIchigo @Rob_230 Don't even need to remake VII, just remove the draw system and it'll be a whole new and better game.
(I'm exaggerating, but you get what I mean.)
Well if anything, that guarantees a sequel.
@ArcadeHeroes it's been confirmed for something else but no idea what at the moment, could be P.C, could be XBOX, could be both
hell it could even be Nintendo Switch for all we know
@ShogunRok you know i love the Junction system, it takes a bit of getting used too but once you understand how it works it makes the characters SO customizable, when i play VIII now a days i can have my party so OP by the end of disc 1 i can take out the bosses a piece of cake
i can understand why others don't though
@FullbringIchigo Nothing wrong with the junction system, but the draw system is... Pretty bad. Having to stock up on magic is way too tedious, even when it gets easier later on.
@ShogunRok yeah but i think that's where the GF refinement system comes in, you can then turn your surplus items into magic so you don't have to rely on Drawing
at least that's why i think it's there it makes no sense otherwise
Just finished up the Platinum, and it really was a great game. Definitely an 8/10 for me, would have scored higher if the last 3 chapters didn't suck and turn in to a battle gauntlet. I really liked the new stuff they added to the story, I've played and finished FF7 so many times that it's nice to play it again and not know what to expect, while still seeing very similar story beats that made up the original.
"Psych"
Congrats!Hope next game doesn`t take to long.
@FullbringIchigo im sure during one on the final battles i staggered the enemy to over 500 twice but didnt get the trophey to my recollection. Maybe because it wasnt a traditional battle as such and thats what its requiring.
Well deserved regardless. Game is epic
The actual sales figure has got to be close to the shipped numbers in this case given as it sold out almost everywhere not long after launch and continues to be now. Even at massive places like Amazon US and Amazon UK. It sold out in Japan before its release date, IIRC. Just imagine how well it would've sold if people could actually get their hands on it.
@ShogunRok @FullbringIchigoI think he was thinking about the level design and flow of the game and XV's later part kinda plays like VIIR and supposedly like VersusXIII would have. And no, I think XV works best when it is openworld.
I prefer VIIR in terms of storytelling but overall, as a game, I prefer XV: so much more ambitious and daring. They are both in the same league of "almost nailed it" for similar and different reasons altogether but VII is too structured and you can't really pick it up and play it...my opinion might change of course as we receive more "episodes" of VIIR.
@Kidfunkadelic83 That's the bike boss and the gimmick is that you do practically no damage normally, but automatically raise the stagger percent regardless of how you attack. You have to do very specific things to get 300% against any other enemy, and it caps at 300% too.
@Kidfunkadelic83 yeah same for me, i think it has to be a normal kind of fight
i found fighting Fat Chocobo was the best opportunity to get it, build up Tifa's Triangle attack with Unbridled Strength and then wail on it with them once i have staggered it
also you gonna want your team to have crappy weapons equipped otherwise they might beat FC before you can get it over 300%
@FullbringIchigo @Feena I kind of what to see how Remake's systems would work in an open world game. There's every chance that Part 2 will be open world — at least to some extent — since we've now left Midgar. Quite excited to see what Square Enix does with the direction.
And I kind of know where you're coming from @Feena in terms of design. For me if you could combine the best design elements from Remake and XV, you could end up with an incredible Final Fantasy.
I did my part. 4 chapters in and it's already becoming a favorite of mine. I really liked the bike sequence and I usually don't for most games including the original games' version but it was fun
@ShogunRok totally agree and the second part of the game could lend itself very well to this kind of idea.
@1_W1NG3D_4NG3L hey at least we know they got the tip right
@ShogunRok well i guess we will have to wait and see and while the original isn't as open as people think, (you are stilled funneled down a pretty linear path for most of the game, it just LOOKS big and open) the originals world map does lead to many possibilities for the remake
i guess it all depends on what Square can do in the time they have, i imagine they wont want to make people wait too long although rumour is that they have already started some voice work on it
of course COVID-19 could delay it a bit
I'm thrilled to see this! This game is absolutely brilliant, the only thing I was worried about when they first announced it was the combat.I felt slightly disappointed they weren't sticking to turn based but the combat in this is superb!I'm on Chapter 9 so still quite far but i actually really like it being Linear compared to open world (although I still hope the next part will be open)as it keeps the story moving and only having sidequests for certain chapters is also a lot better than FFXVs rush about all around the world doing same old quests and hunts.
At least this news will be encouraging to SquareEnix to really put all they have at the next one.
Congrats for squareenix, so far the game is 10/10 for me. I just got to chapter 8, aerith is adorb 😀
That's ***** sad so many are okay with supporting anti-consumer practices. Good job all you entitled hobbyists, because you aren't gamers, you've just made it possible for more companies to get away with doing this in the future. We waited this long for FF7, you could have waited until the full release was out. You honestly should be ashamed of yourselves, and if you aren't, then there's simply no hope in the world left for you.
Divisive? Really Push Square. 😒😒.
@GoblinKing86 so it's not a full game because the story takes place over multiple releases?
I guess the original Mass Effect isn't a full game either then, or God of War or Batman Arkham Asylum or heck even FFXIII
No of course they are an so is this, the game has a beginning and an end so leave off with this we aint gamers and anti consumer nonsense you spout on every FFVII Remake article because quite frankly we are all sick of your bull
If a 30 to 40 hour gaming experience isn't a "full game" then nothing is
See ppl who needs xbox version lol
The big games that are actually being released are making a fortune
Divisive? 😂 Okay buddy. I mean the pull-up challenge pissed me (and a lot of people) off, but otherwise I've heard nothing but love for this game. I think people are too quick to call something divisive just because a few people whined loudly about it on the Internets. As if people whining on the Internets have a different volume setting.
I've just finished it. I'll admit that I was a tad lost at the end but it never really spoilt what was largely a very enjoyable game. The combat and characters (especially Barret and Aerith) were the stars of the show for me.
@VroomVroomSpork That's how vocal minorities always worked, now with the internet they seem even bigger in numbers, but in reality it's just easier for them to collectively complain.
@ApostateMage personally i thought Tifa was the best, she was quick, strong had powerful techniques and can stagger foes quite easily
@FullbringIchigo From a combat perspective, Tifa was definitely my favourite but I'm talking just pure character. I know many see Barret as cliche but I loved the way he'd always try to solve problems first by kicking arse, loved his love/hate relationship with Cloud, loved his preaching about saving the planet and loved his cheesy lines.
All of the gang were done really well but he was my favourite.
@FullbringIchigo Than you for saying this sir! They bottlenecked you with traversal in the OG game. It wasn't until the game was practically finished that you could truly go anywhere. I think it's really difficult (not impossible) to tell a really great story without some sort of structure.Open world games do not lend themselves to this. I don't understand why 'linear' has become a bad thing in games. I like having a beginning, a middle and an end?? Yeah, you can run about all over the place but that's when things become disjointed. I really loved the game and after watching some vids and jumping into the lore and playing the game a second time, MY MIND IS BLOWN. I cannot wait for the next part of this game, it's gonna be epic. (srsly watch the Easy Allies spoilercast for FF7R it's amazing.)
@kiki3400 they did in pretty much all the old games, there was always something blocking your way be it a mountain range, the sea or even a broken bridge you could never fully explore the world until you got the airship (unless it was like in FFIV for example where you had multiple airships, some that could go over mountains and some that can't)
lets look at the OG FFVII once you left Midgar there was only one place you could go, Kalm then it was to the Chocobo Farm, etc etc
i would say that (not counting XI and XIV as they are MMO's) the first proper open world mainline FF game was XV
linear games seem to get a bad rep these days but some of the best games of this and previous gens have been linear take the last God of War for example where as open world games have become cookie cutter, copy and paste jobs, you only have to look at a lot of Ubisofts output to see that
big open worlds don't mean it's going to be a brilliant game, sometimes a more structured style is the perfect way to do it
