@Titntin I'm a white male and I actually prefer to play as women characters. Maybe it's because I like to look at them lol. I don't need to be represented to enjoy something.
I don't know why everyone needs to see a carbon copy of themselves in the games they play. I thought people enjoyed to pretend to be something they're not.
And even if a character happens to align with your race and sex, it doesn't mean much at all. For example, I don't consider myself to have almost anything in common with Nathan Drake except for the love of exploration. But it was his love of exploration and not his appearance or his sexual preference that made me want to play those games!
Basically, it boiled down to am I going to have a good time playing this game? Never have I thought to myself for example, well Aloy is a woman, there's no way I can enjoy this.
I think it's a generational thing with the ascension of avatars and the need for ultra customization.
@Ravix Its not shocking that straight white males have been the leaders in countries in which have been almost exclusively white until very recently.
Just like it's not shocking that straight ethnic Chinese males are the leaders in China and straight black males are the leaders in Nigeria.
Most of the globe outside the Western World is still very patriarchal and very anti-LGBT so it's not surprising. So the leaders or "normal" was going to be whatever heterosexual males are found in those countries.
Most countries outside the Western World are still very homogenized.
I long for the day where you can be a male and introduce your boyfriend to someone and no one gives a damn either way. That's when you know it's been totally normalized.
@Jacko11 You should try to get back into it. It runs very well now. The new option btw that's in between resolution and performance mode is a sweet spot and it looks and plays great.
I will admit though that I wasn't as awed as I was with the first one, though I still had a great time playing it and completed literally everything in the game.
@LimitedPower Indeed it is, but it's a symbol from the 21st century. I don't think it's political at all btw, my personal opinion.
If you absolutely have to have a symbol for sexuality in the game, it would have been cooler if it was invented in-game as part of a side quest or something like that to give it some meaning that makes sense in the world instead of carrying over symbols from a time that has no meaning to the game characters.
@naruball if we don't say anything we may wind up with an "Era of The Remake Remakes" and instead of getting 6 original AAA IPs a year you'll get two and 4 remakes.
I wish it was as simple as if we don't like it, we don't have to play it. Unfortunately resources are finite and for every game they remake twice that's time and resources wasted from creating a new IP or even a sequel to something.
@TooManyBrownies that's strange because the data linked above shows the EU and United States have a similar number of games played and hours per title played but Japan players average half as many games and more than double the number of hours played per title compared to everyone else.
@Brockybrock if I get a trophy for doing something I enjoy that's fine. But the trophy itself won't motivate me.
In Horizon Zero Dawn I WANTED to find all the metal flowers. I wasn't hunting them down because I was going to get a trophy.
An opposite example would be meowing in Stray. I read there was a trophy for meowing a certain number of times. I played that game with my daughter and after meowing a bunch of times we're both like ok that's enough of that lol
@MillenialDoomer instead of sociological it could just be explained by data.
The EU has double the unemployment rate of the United States and has for a long time. Since the EU average is playing almost as many games as Americans, if there are more people not working in the EU it can explain why more people can achieve platinum there.
Japan's unemployment rate is low like the United States', but they also play half as many games as the average American which again means they have more time to platinum the few games in which they do play.
That is also supported by the fact that the data (from the links in the article) showed the average Japanese gamer spends double the time playing each game compared to Americans or Europeans.
Additionally we can possibly add that we in the United States just don't care as much about trophies compared to other places.
If the USA is playing on average double the number of games a person from Japan is playing, it can explain why we have less platinums. There's no time to platinum everything, we just move on to the next game.
I know personally I don't care about trophies. I like to see my completion stats instead, regardless if that means I earn a trophy or not.
@AdamNovice It's ironic that the most constructive feedback was deleted and marked as "unconstructive feedback"
@LtSarge Sorry friend but tweets aren't news. It's not even tabloid level news. It's random musings from random people on the internet. This is just a reflection of lazy "journalism" of the last 5+ years.
Pushsquare's worst nightmare is for an article like this to be written and no one comments underneath. I say we all try our best and completely ignore the next attempt at getting us to argue. Because this is what these "articles" are meant to do, get people angry and engaged in the comments.
@torne to be fair, journalism in general the last 5 or so years has been the equivalent of finding something that you think will generate clicks, write one or two paragraphs about it, and then embed a few tweets from literal nobodies supporting the article's position.
Nobody is ever happy with price increases but only the equivalent of $366 the last two years? That's a hell of a discount! They must have been taking a huge loss on each console.
@Kienda isn't VAT in the UK 20% for electronics? Or something like that?
Maybe that's why your 359 price was as high as it was. Sony can't offset all of the VAT just to keep numbers in parity with other countries.
Tax rates vary from place to place. If we had a 20% tax here and American would have paid $600 for the PS5, so higher than your costs again.
So I'm thinking that's why it was priced at 359 for you guys which translated to a higher overall cost when changed to dollars. They can only offset so much of your VAT.
@Kienda Actually it's the opposite of what you are saying.
All this time since the release of the PS5 the US consumer has been paying between $540 and $550 for a PS5 when taxes are included.
Every other region's taxes were already included in the announced prices in 2020 so Europe's PS5 has actually cost almost 10% lower than the USA's for the last two years.
I've never played a Souls like game. My favorite recent games that I've finished are Ratchet and Clank, Horizon Forbidden West and Resident Evil 8. I also loved the Tomb Raider and Uncharted Series.
Do you think I would enjoy a game like Elden Ring? I've been thinking about buying either Elden Ring or Ghost of Tsushima next.
@Ward_ting It may be that @Jammsbro is disatisfied with the content curation of the site and he feels that if he doesn't voice his displeasure then there may come a time where Pushsquare deviates so far from its core mission that he would have to stop reading the site and he doesn't want that to happen?
@get2sammyb if PC gamers waited this long for the games to port over to PC there's no way they're going to buy a whole console NOW for games they KNOW will be ported over to PC with an ever decreasing time delay.
The startup costs for PC gaming at the level of PS5 are huge.
I've been building desktops for a long time. You can't even compare components, as consoles are custom jobs and parts that are uber optimized for gaming.
You also have zero overhead regarding the system software itself in the PS5, it's all built to play games.
A windows system is doing 1000 different things while you game that have nothing to do with gaming which also affects performance in all types of components.
So how long do you think before developers stop optimizing for the PlayStation?
I promise you that day is coming. One day, when the PC version is being released on the same day as the PS version, developers will have the same deadline for both platforms and will stop wasting time tweaking things for the PS.
@WadeIsInsane You kind of proved my point. If the game character's appearance is open to interpretation then nessisonett can't unilaterally declare her race and then use his personal interpretation as a counterargument against another person's post.
My problem was that someone decided something to be true with no hard evidence and used that as an argument against someone.
What do you mean "Let others for once be able to see themselves in a character and let live?" Is that what nessisonett was doing?
Looking at the game character and ONLY the game character you don't think black. I'm sorry. That's just a fact. Which was the whole point of my post. I wanted to know how in the world can nessisonett could have known for a fact that game character is black just by looking at the trailers and the gameplay that's been released.
If you have to dig up who the mocap actor is and then make sure she identifies as only black since she's mixed race and then somehow come to the conclusion that the game character perfectly matches the mocap character's identity in real life then it's not that obvious now is it?
There's no trap. Stop that silliness. I just think nessisonett made a big assumption about the game character in order to come up with a retort against someone else's argument.
@nessisonett Online it says she's "British, Polish, and Caribbean."
And why do you assume her mocaped character identifies exactly as the person in real life? Are you limiting the roles she can play to what she identifies as?
She doesn't look black in the game. She looks mixed. You assumed the game character will be black based on what the mixed race actor identifies in real life, not because of the character's appearance in the game.
So to say Forespoken's main character is black is not accurate unless the game itself says so. You can't assume that based on the actor, unless this game is a biography of Balinska haha
Actors play people they're not all the time. It's the job of an actor.
@nessisonett "Is it literally just because there’s a black woman in it?"
She's black? How can you tell? Are you just making assumptions based on skin color? Or is it somewhere specifically mentioned in the released dialogue?
In fact it looks like the producers tried their very damned best to make sure you COULDN'T tell her background. Which actually makes her look unrealistic or "designed by committee."
Hopefully one day we get a full blown Astro's Playroom game with challenging gameplay.
Even though I loved the pack in game (and I understood why it was short) I thought it was way too easy. I don't see why even if it was basically a showcase of the Dualsense why it had to be so easy.
My first system was a Genesis (though my dad had a 086 IBM PC since the early 80s where he taught me how to load games from those 5.25 inch floppies, all at age 6 in the late 80s.)
Fast forward to the mid 90s and one of my friends got a PS1. I saw Tekken and played it with him and that was all I needed to see. I had to have the PlayStation. I even loved seeing and hearing that entry logo.
I've been playing Stray but I started getting this annoying screen flickering. I had the same problem with Forbidden West but it stopped after a console restart.
I haven't restarted yet as it's currently in rest mode. Hopefully a full restart will solve the issue.
@Loftimus It should be cheaper because so much of the production had already been completed for them.
That goes for any remake. Using your example, they remade assets from scratch, but how did they know what those assets should be and what they should look like?
Artists had already developed those assets for them from the original version. That's a big leg up in producing a game when you already know what everything should look like.
That's just one example. I listed some others such as the voice acting, script, etc.
@Loftimus to be fair to the PS4 remaster, it was released for a new console only a year after the PS3 release.
There are games in the PlayStation store that are still selling at full retail price one year later, so I don't think it's egregious for the PS4 remaster to have sold at full retail when it was only a year old and for a new system and the fact that it was a remaster (which is not much but still something.)
I think Sony lost a lot of good will by pricing this at $70. And I am one of their biggest defenders regarding the general price jump from $60 to $70.

In the USA, going all the way back to November 2020, the cost for a PS5 out the door is between $540 and $550 depending on state.

@eshy76 I agree regarding why they kept the price the same in the USA, it's literally in Jim Ryan's quotation.
The US dollar has gained 16% on the Euro, and I read that Sony buys its components in dollars so that would have helped keep costs down.
Btw doesn't the price reflected in Europe already include VAT? In the US the cost for the PS5 after taxes is between $540 and $550 depending on state.
