Re: 'It Makes Sense Why the PS5 Pro Price Is So High,' Say Tech Experts

@Zeke68

The PS5 is my first system. I am 10 years old. My mommy and daddy got it for me for Christmas. I was so happy.

Let me ask you, if consoles aren't computers then what are they? PC is shorthand for computer. It doesn't have to take the form of a bland gray box about 20 inches tall and 8 inches wide.

Did the Genesis have a motherboard? Did it have a sound chip? Did it have a CPU? Did it have video RAM? Did it have a display processor?

Now what does that sound like to you? A coffee machine?

@Zeke68

Consoles have always been PCs, they just happen to be dedicated to gaming. How do you expect to get top of the line graphics in a machine that costs 400 or 500 bucks? The PS5 cost is basically a miracle.

The whole point of the pro is to be the best. Consoles have all the same components inside as PCs do. It's going to be expensive.

@Jacko11

If you think about it, if you want top of the line graphics, tons of storage and easy tv accessibility in a fairly compact design with one of the best controllers on the market included, 700 is not that bad.

In my case, since I already have a PS5 it's hard for me to justify another 700.

Plus if they somehow got it down to 600 it would have cannibalized PS5 sales. I think that's one of the reasons they also opted for 2TB of storage.

The PS5 is already considered a luxury item, the PS5 Pro is even more so. The Pro is most definitely not a product for the masses. It's a niche luxury item for the most dedicated of gamers.

UK imposes a 20% VAT tax and that 699 includes that. That's the UK's doing, not Sony's. The US's 699 includes no tax.

How do so many people not know about VAT, I don't understand it.

Re: Talking Point: Is PS5 Pro Way Too Expensive?

GreatAuk

@Fartingale

Correct.

Buying a PC equivalent will never be cheaper than just buying the console. It never has been and it never will.

Just the Windows 11 Home license is $140 dollars. Good luck building the entire computer for 260 additional dollars and get an output of the $400 dollar Digital PS5 lolol

You literally can't build ANYTHING for that little, forget about gaming. You'll be missing 75% of the components 😂

Re: Talking Point: Is PS5 Pro Way Too Expensive?

@johncalmc

I generally agree. Many of us couldn't even get our hands on a PS5 in the first year because of a lack of availability.

For many people it's only been a couple years since they shelled out 500 for it. If you're one of those people it's very difficult to justify 700 for a digital version only a couple years later.

Re: Talking Point: Is PS5 Pro Way Too Expensive?

GreatAuk

Is there a reason that so many people that live in the UK don't even know about their own VAT system?

Are these people like 12 years old that are posting?

Time and time again I see the same false argument about the 1:1 price between the US and the UK being unfair.

Your government imposes a 20% tax that is already baked into the cost. In the US they don't include taxes.

Re: Talking Point: Is PS5 Pro Way Too Expensive?

GreatAuk

It sounds like a lot. I think they should have at least done something like $649. It makes a difference psychologically.

If it was $599 I would have bought it. Now even though I can afford it I think I'll sit it out.

But the $599 PS3 which debuted in 2006 is still the most expensive console released. Adjusted for 2024 that's a whopping $940 dollars. Even the cheaper $499 model is $780 dollars today.

So it's been worse lol

Re: Failing Manufacturers Are Pushing the Narrative That Consoles Are Dying, Says Ex-Xbox Exec

GreatAuk

Consoles will never die as long as people want an all in one gaming system with good graphics, built in ecosystem and guaranteed game compatibility that can be played easily on a TV.

PCs can't even come close to that.

And the bang for buck of a console obliterates a comparable PC.

So no, consoles won't die unless a technology that can replicate that experience and cost is developed to replace them.

Re: How Much Would You Pay for Your PS5 Games? Dev Says Industry Is Waiting for GTA 6 to Hike Prices

GreatAuk

This is such a clickbait article.

A typical cost for a Genesis or SNES game in the early 1990s was $44.99. A game that you can finish in like 4 hours at most with zero extra content and no free updates.

That 44.99 is about 105 dollars today.

So do you think we get our money's worth today? The answer is a resounding yes.

You only think games are expensive at $70 if you are 15 years old and have no sense of perspective.

Re: Rumour: PS5 Pro Design Seemingly Leaked

GreatAuk

There's no way there won't be a disc version. Too many people have already bought tons of games on discs, if they aren't able to play them on the PS5 Pro that means those people probably won't upgrade their system.

That would kill too many sales. It would be a very poor business decision.

The only way there isn't a disc version available is if Sony comes up with some way to register a game to an account where you don't need the disc to play the game anymore. I think that's a long shot though.

Re: Rumour: PS5 Pro Was Allegedly Being Talked About Openly at Gamescom

GreatAuk

@Rhaoulos

Huh? Why would I want to game on the PC if I want something better than the PS5? Then you could have said the same for every PS4 owner that wanted more power.

I don't want to play games on a 27 inch screen with a keyboard and mouse. I know I can get a controller hooked up but most PC gamers I know don't do that. Anecdotal but still.

I want to play games on the 77 inch OLED with HDR and all that good stuff. Plus I love the ease of the PlayStation ecosystem, interface and store.

I've been building PCs since I was like 14 and I have never felt the urge to game on a PC. I've always been a console guy.

The cost to performance ratio for a PS5 compared to a comparable PC is much higher. Biggest bang for buck to get a PS5. Same will apply for a PS5 Pro and I will most certainly be getting it.

Re: Sony's Going to Make Damn Sure You Pay Attention to Astro Bot on PS5

@Vaako007

The models are pretty but FOR ME, they are a bit too thin. I prefer a woman that's more like Camille Kostek.

Just because someone isn't as thin as these models doesn't mean you want someone obese btw, which I think you're implying. You're also kind of dissing the entire West by implying we're all obese.

I hope this full version of Astrobot is more challenging than the included console game, that felt more like a showpiece for the controller.

I did have a lot of fun playing it though, but I just need more difficulty.

Re: Stellar Blade Dev Shift Up Goes Public, Makes a Huge Pile of Money

@Dunkin

My friend, I would say that between creating art that costs millions (or even hundreds of millions) of dollars or keeping people alive via feeding them, I would have to say that gaming is still 100% a waste of resources. We make like playing video games, they might make cultural impacts, but they're not necessary, and they never have been.

Gaming is a luxury, sustenance is a necessity.

The only reason people create games is that their time and devotion to the project will be rewarded, whether it be through praise, accolades or monetary compensation.

Since you can't eat praise, people create video games for monetary compensation first and foremost. And since praise and monetary compensation usually go hand in hand, it's a general all around win for the creator.

Without an incentivizing economic system in place (capitalism) a lot of great things simply would not exist.

Re: Stellar Blade Dev Shift Up Goes Public, Makes a Huge Pile of Money

GreatAuk

@Dunkin

Without capitalism there is no game industry. Literally zero.

Games are 100% a waste of resources. Do you feel any guilt at all that your consumption of games is keeping food out of a starving kid's mouth halfway around the world?

We could have diverted these resources to feeding people. You see why that's a silly take?

Btw greed is not inherent in capitalism. That's reductionist nonsense.

As long as the board is controlled by the founders then they can make any game they want. So everyday shareholders are not automatically who calls the shots just because you go public.

Re: Genre Pivot, 'Toxic Positivity' Blamed for Suicide Squad's $200 Million Flop

GreatAuk

@TrickyDicky99 I like the term but I don't think they are using it correctly though like @nomither6 mentioned.

To me toxic positivity is when someone thinks they are doing fine but in fact is doing poorly but no one tells them the truth because they're worried about hurting their feelings.

In WB' case the developers knew it was going to be a ***** show from what WB was doing. I think calling WB dismissive of the developers' concerns would be a better way to put it.

Re: PS5 Is Sony's Most Profitable Console Generation to Date

GreatAuk

@UnlimitedSevens

It's not from jacking up the prices clearly. Or at least the increased prices are justified. Inflation is a real thing.

The talking point of "it's corporate greed" is false in almost all sectors of the economy (used cars being a notable exception, although that has come down substantially now.)

Sony is maintaining the same ~9% profit level over revenue as they did during the PS4.

At $500 (and especially now at $450) the PS5 is BY FAR the best bang for buck you can get in gaming.
