Re: Game of the Year 2018: Sammy's Personal Picks

@get2sammyb for me to feel compelled to keep playing, I'd say yes. I appreciate how people register or interpret fun is massively subjective. Some people find it in Mario, some in Getting Over It. I think the issue here (and I acknowledge the fault is probably mine), is I went into it expecting something similar to RDR. Which, to be fair, wasn't a completely unrealistic expectation.

To me though, in terms of gameplay, the two are like chalk and cheese. RDR felt like GTA with cowboys. This feels like a whole other degree of realism. I'm not sure if it's bad, but I wasn't expecting it. Which is more than likely why I came away disappointed.

@Amplified I felt pretty alone in sharing your view. It just feels like there's not much actual game here. Start a mission, follow someone for an eternity whilst they talk nonsense, then do something fun for all of 3 minutes before rinsing and repeating. I thought I'd take solice in hunting, but it just feels clunky as hell. Constantly having to click sticks to track is annoying as hell. And having to pitch a camp to craft is so slow and tedious. It just feels like hyper realism dialled up to 11. Is it gorgeous and detailed? 100% yes. Fun? Not really.

Re: Sony Issues Statement Regarding Fortnite Cross-Platform Play on PS4

@Bad-MuthaAdebisi that means nothing, and doesn't wholly justify their decision. Working for an enormous company, I get that the bottom line counts. But public perception weighs heavily on our business decisions. And being as big as we are, I have to make decisions all the time that I don't personally agree with, and which cost us money. The alternative is that we risk reputational damage in the public eye, which is exactly what Sony is doing right now, and something big businesses typically avoid like the plague.

Re: Here's Why Recalling Kratos' Leviathan Axe in God of War Feels Amazing

All of it, the combination of the sounds, the animation, the damage and even the rumble... It all adds up to visceral oomph that never gets old. I love it.

One brilliant thing I noticed yesterday when chucking my axe at water barrels in The Lake of Nine; depending on when you press the recall will actually affect who long the axe takes to come back... because once it hits the water it starts to sinks, thus increasing the distance from Kratos. The fact that the game registers that there's depth there in the water (even if hidden from view) is bloody brilliant.

I'm currently reading Blood Sweat and Pixels (which is great btw), and seeing the ridiculous conditions and pressures that these guys have to sometimes work in, the tears don't surprise me in the slightest. If anyone is a fan of gaming, I'd recommend you read it just to see how much of a feat it is just to get a game made... and to also give you perspective.

On topic though job well done, fella. We salute you.

Re: A New Alien Shooter is in Development for PS4

AhabSpampurse

@JoeBlogs There is a chunk of game before you get anything that provides any decent defence, so stick with it. I love love love the Alien universe, but I doubt I'll ever play Isolation again. A great game, but I felt like I'd visibly aged by the end of it...

Re: Hands On: Monster Hunter: World Is Shaping Up to Be Something Very, Very Special on PS4

AhabSpampurse

@KirbyTheVampire yeah, I think the fault was mine for having expectations too high. I think calling it a beta was a bit misleading though. I was expecting something meaty, but it just struck me as pretty much identical to any one of the demos that the 3DS has had in the past.

And yeah, I'm in agreement that MH demos cover a miniscule portion of the final product, so here's hoping the final product will be more satisfying. As mentioned above, I'm a fan of the franchise so they'll get my money regardless

Re: Review: Forma.8 (PS4)

I picked it up on Switch, and whilst it's enjoyable enough the slow movement of the character irritates me after a while. I get that its got a very deliberate pace and aesthetic, but for a game that rewards exploration, taking ages to move from point A to B seems a bit odd to me.
