Voted that it was OK. For Good it would need trophies added to games that never had them; for very good it would need downloadable PS3 games as well.
I don’t care about day 1; like most adults, I don’t have time to stay up to date with releases anyway.
Looks like Extra will be my top tier then. Glad I didn’t get the chance to spend to stack premium now, without additional trophy challenges the old games just aren’t worth going back to for me. Not for the same old.
I only care about trophies if they are fun, or if it’s a platinum (as many leading you that platinum will be fun, interesting, or challenging). As such I don’t really see any value it trophies that can be achieved in just a couple of hours.
I do know many trophy hunters who would hate to leave an unfinished trophy game on their account though, so this could put them off.
Some additional games seem to have been added: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla For Honor The Crew 2 Child of Light Eagle Flight Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Far Cry 3 Remaster Far Cry 4 Legendary Fishing Risk: Urban Assault South Park: The Fractured but Whole South Park: The Stick of Truth Space Junkies Star Trek: Bridge Crew Starlink: Battle for Atlas STEEP The Crew The Division Trackmania Turbo Transference Trials Fusion Trials of the Blood Dragon Game Trials Rising Valiant Hearts: The Great War Watch Dogs Werewolves Within ZOMBI
I know I’ve said it on every article now, but without additional trophy challenges I have zero interest in replaying old games. Huge missed opportunity to breath new life into old games. Also, rewind? I find that just cheapens games. Yes I could ignore it, but I wouldn’t. So little time. Save states are a good feature of course; really no time to be trudging to a save point whenever I need to do something else on the PS these days.
Then it’s a no go for me. Playing old games again with Zero additional challenges? No thanks. Huge missed opportunity to bring old games to life again (and get me as a premium member).
@themightyant
Well, yes, it has most certainly continued to be a problem because it is still the policy. True, it was worse for devs during the transition period that was forced on them mid development, with lots of obvious censorship or cancellation of PS versions; now many devs have learnt (sadly) to just make their games to the new standards for PlayStation, or just flat out stopped releasing games for the system and focus instead on Switch. PS games are still releasing with less content and fewer modes than the switch and PC equivalence though.
You are totally correct that it is cost cutting to an extent, but it is also socially aware / PR, openly stated by Sony.
This is not the main point in the context of this article though, rather it is the fact that Sony now have forced this centralisation that has negatively impacted many devs, especially Japanese devs where they would not necessarily have anyone on staff who speak English. It just speaks to this new mindset.
Sony used to have regional arms, but they regressed.
@Apfelschteiner I know, it’s crazy, but in order to be certified for sale everything needs to go through California now, and they only allow discussion and submission in English, even for games that were only planned for release in Japan.
And the centralisation of PlayStation strikes another negative. Shouldn’t be too hard to offer regional pricing. But then Sony don’t even let Japanese devs submit games in Japanese anymore. Total regression.
Always found some Japanese naming conventions strange, but wonder if it sounds less cumbersome in Japanese.
Also, strange as it may sound, isn’t just adding “definitive edition” to the end of a games name (in this case Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate) kind of standard naming convention?
Yakuza Ishin, Kenzan, and Dead Souls please!!! Skies of Arcadia too, but I’ve personally already played it through 3 times, the others I haven’t had the chance.
@Matej
At least they play. My 3D blu rays won’t so I have no other option but to keep my PSVR hooked into my PS4 when I too would prefer to mothball the latter at this point.
Unfortunately the only way to halt this is for government to step in and ban the manipulation of addiction, gambling mechanics, and FOMO. At that point these social spaces masquerading as games will stop being anywhere near as profitable.
Sony’s communication and marketing is abysmal, so I do think they could do with one, but don’t think we’ll get one.
All they need to do is give me details on PSVR2 and I’m happy though. That and announce retro games will have trophies.
Lol, got tales of arise for £28 physical, can get £20 back in trade in value. Why would I spend £37 extra for the sake of the DLC, which isn’t even that attractive? Digital games still a massive rip off until they let us have ownership.
That’s fair and fine, but I’d like Sony to branch out into AA rated smaller games where they can take a few more risks (and perhaps put them day one one the service, although that bit doesn’t really bother me)
The next time mum buys “FIFA” for Johnny at Christmas, lol.
Honestly though, FIFA as a game is, at this point, almost more recognisable than the FIFA organisation. Releasing another game with the name surely would have to be handled very carefully. Would EA have some type of developed intellectual property rights exclusive to the videogames space? I seriously doubt it given they don’t own the FIFA brand, but the law can be strange when applied to the extremely wealthy; could gamers claim some type of misrepresentation even, should a new publisher have FIFA as the main name of their football game?
Also, the idea that any new company would pay close to what EA would shows FIFA are eying the value of their license in different digital product spaces unrelated to gaming. Gambling apps maybe??
It’s also extremely unlikely another dev could suddenly create a better football game of course, but I’m sure FIFA don’t actually care much about this.
The only company I can think of with the money and sports games interest is Take 2
@Ryany
I think you mean the games aren’t that different, the hardware is certainly a huge leap. We’ve just been held back by devs not committing to current gen because the hardware couldn’t be produced in large enough quantities to make it commercially viable. Also, U5 hasn’t even been fully developed yet.
The real next gen is VR for me anyway. Slightly more real scenes in pancake mode won’t be a big deal when realised.
@slayernz
Not that I’m disagreeing with the concept of not playing it, but if you’re going by the overall number or names of players then you are doing it wrong. Look at the speed stat. That is all that has ever really been relevant. Differences elsewhere can be made up for with a tiny amount of skill.
Having finished the plat for FotNS Lost Paradise this week I’d been planning to jump straight into Tales of Arise. Unfortunately I’m stuck into a “just one more go” loop on Slay the Spire. Ridiculously addictive.
PSVR is the reason I’m still with PlayStation (and the compelling trophy metagame, but that is somewhat replicated elsewhere). Last gen was dominated by the likes of Astro Bot RM and Beat Saber, which I enjoy far more than flat games most of the time.
As such, that obviously got my vote, but I am looking forward to what PS5 can do when the last gen shackles are removed and U5 is in play.
Also looking forward to seeing whether trophy support breathes new life into old games, or if they’ll be the same old offerings (and so mostly DoA for me.
@naruball I know the relative strengths and weaknesses of all the platform holders given I’ve had all of their systems at one time or another. I’ve decided on Sony for my limited gaming time due to VR, doesn’t mean I have to be blind to their faults like some kind of fanboy.
@Quadalog
I think you misjudged tone a bit there mate. Easily done online, been there myself (I presume you are talking about my first message - “ Impressive that you’ve played all games I guess (or maybe just all games you want to, if you have particularly narrow tastes), but most people haven’t had time to play it all, so a cheaper service without day one (usually broken) releases is fine by me.”)

Well, they will not “run more smoothly”. They will however appear more smooth to the eye. Potentially. If there was stuttering or tearing already most especially.
Good to see these things being relatively easily implemented as an option I guess, but I hope this never becomes a default and only choice.
The only games I’m interested in which relate to Square Enix in any way are Forespoken and FF16. Are these impacted at all? I’m guessing not as they likely come out of Japan and haven’t been mentioned.
I guess, having played all previous releases, that the next Life is Strange should be on my list but, honestly, for a narrative game it’s always been a bit hamfisted and lacking in nuance. Would have been ok with that one going elsewhere if it had.
Sony used to have standards but seem to have stopped caring. If they don’t put trophies into the PS+ retro games then the writing is really on the wall for the phenomenal metagame.
Fantastic games. Really don’t get the negativity here from both readers and writers sometimes. There’s plenty to criticise Sony for, but not the things they have been.
Might boot up fifa as I haven’t played one since 15, and that only briefly (was a big downgrade on 14 in terms of manual through ball passing/shooting and just never tried to get back into it). The other two will probably sit in my backlog…I just don’t have time for games that don’t exceptionally appeal to me these days.

Yeah, I get that it would be weird for people, but I really get aggravated with platform holders (gaming or otherwise) trying to manipulate society to their own vision by gatekeeping ideas or experiences. It’s not right when they hold such sway over cultural output. The only acceptable censorship by a platform holder is that which is necessary to meet legal obligations. Platform holders in any form of media should not have the right (nor carry the responsibility) to censor for any other reason.
You are right, what is being censored here, in and of itself, isn’t important (well, not to me anyway, some would take offence at the idea that a woman’s body must be either altered or censored to be acceptable)
