@WallyWest
Lol, MS are just trying to buy a monopoly before cranking prices up and stopping people taking the piss. Sony, thankfully, haven’t got the money to do that.
Well, yes, this is logical right? It’s called being a business not a charity or, like their competitor, moneybagging the industry under the guise of “for the consumer” in order to gain a monopoly.
Now, if I was Sony I’d have upgraded everyone to premium for the rest of their subscription but stop people being able to buy any more of it at the same time. Bit of give and take.
@get2sammyb
Indeed. Next best thing. Although it might impact how companies pace games I guess.
Disappointed it doesn’t count for VR though. If anything games that can potentially cause motion sickness are the ones most in need of this option.
@get2sammyb
Genuinely hard for me to care about this when there is no general refund or trade in policy though (I.e. they charge us but don’t let us own games). In this situation, demos should be mandatory.
While I in no way feel I should be entitled, I can only think it’s bad PR for Sony to offer free upgrades to Now owners, and this for plus and now owners, but no free upgrade for plus owners only. It’s perfectly understandable because now owners paid for streaming of older ps games and the catalogue so need to be given the service that includes that, but a bit of investment in goodwill from Sony wouldn’t have gone amiss.
Sony lost out big time on their last gen momentum due to the chip shortage, but I can’t bring myself to think it’s a bad thing at the moment. Strong competition is good for the consumer. Of course Sony still need to earn big money in order to provide sweet deals to the consumer, as they don’t have the huge cash reserves and market value of Microsoft, so the best balance is probably Sony staying just ahead of that juggernaut, which is likely going to be the case.
Well yes, I presumed this, did anyone think differently. Surely it’s just plus and now combined, so you get the plus games to keep and other games in a catalogue can rotate in and out. Depending on the number of games this might even be better than having both previously because now Sony can’t double up on games going to both services (one would hope anyway).
Most important question for me is whether there is a new trophy challenge campaign for these old games, or if it’s just the same old. Will be a missed opportunity if trophy challenges aren’t included, the journey to platinum for me is a whole new campaign for each game, often as much or more fun than the linear narrative campaign.
No interest in rewind but save states would be good. I don’t have as much time as I used to and being able to drop in and out of games by saving at will is more important than it was.
I guess it’s a good thing. Some clever marketing needed, however, to get people to see this as a legitimate perk of the higher tier subscription, rather than something everybody should be entitled to.
@themightyant True, there is a chance patches will be released that effectively allow for unstable frame rates because it’s not as noticeable with VRR activated. I hope not though. Just because it can’t be seen as easily doesn’t mean it can’t be felt.
@UltimateOtaku91 Unless you noticed frame stuttering or screen tearing you wouldn’t see any difference. It’s not like VRR improves performance or anything.
@MB81
I doubt they are worried about PES at all. It’s just coming to the end of the season. Guess they want to drag more people into their Microtransaction traps before domestic football tapers off. They’ll also get a lot of kids trying to get their non football supporting mates into FIFA if it’s free. Dosing up the next generation.
Well, this might be the first fifa I’ve played since FIFA 14 then. Don’t mind getting it for free. Ultimate team was fun last time I played (and didn’t have to pay anything extra to just get cheap fast players).
@AndyKazama
Why Elden ring specifically? I know VRR doesn’t help performance, so does ER have particularly bad tearing or judder? Have an LG CX which I think can do VRR, and was thinking of getting ER this weekend.
As a JRPG guy I can’t think of many games I’d need this on, but I’m sure some of the few of us with PS5s and VRR capable TVs could get some use from it
@IonMagi
Again (and you were already provided with a screenshot showing this by another user) the terms and promises for the newly named sub are exactly the same as the current PS+ No need for you to go inventing so called changes or reductions. It even uses the word “same”.
Sony have only ever dropped old platforms from the service such as VITA and PS3. They added PS4 games from day of release and throughout it’s life, and added PS5 games from release also.
I’m going to stop engaging with you now because I’ve already had it confirmed by others that you are a troll. Ignorance I can work with, but stupidity or trolling is another matter.
@IonMagi I’m thinking you must be a troll now. How many people have to tell you that the number of games haven’t been reduced before you stop spouting nonsense?
@gomersoul Really don’t see how anyone can lose out. I don’t play online or use cloud saves, but I Was given around 40 games with plus last year, paid £35. Sure, if you’re all up to date and only play new releases it’s not for you, but that has always been the case.
Are you mad that plus owners are only getting exactly what they paid for? I understand the desire to have free upgrades like Now owners (who got upgraded to a service that also included the Plus benefits as well as retaining their Now service plus more…), but I’d never feel entitled to it. Is that really how you feel?
@IonMagi
Of course we’ll keep getting a PS5 game. Why do you think they’d stop giving us the bonus game on top of the two standard ones? That would be somewhat counter productive when they are looking to promote this service.
@nomither6
Even if they wanted to make it realistic looking, this is cross gen, that creates balancing issues potentially. Clean (cartoon) lines and non demanding graphics to keep frame rates stable on older systems is probably their thinking
@strawhatcrew
I think it’s better than judgment (the story and stealth elements of which I thought were tedious) but I think I preferred Lost Judgment. You can’t really go wrong with these games though in all honesty.
@strawhatcrew Well, not as wacky (apart from it being a bit more fantasy genre focused I guess). It’s more over the top cartoon. Lots of blood. Not so much of the seedier stuff as in the earlier Yakuza games though, so a different tone. Overall the world and characters are fun for a one off game, but I don’t think the characterisation was strong enough to support a 6 game franchise for example.
The platinum trophy is not a completionist trophy in the western version, which is a bit disappointing.
Combat is probably more varied and fun, yet at the same time repetitive due to all the animations slowing things down.
I actually liked the racing, coliseum, cabaret, and other side tasks, but there is s bit of grinding to do.
If you like Yakuza you’ll like this ultimately. There is no weak point in my opinion.
Always found these turn based games more suited to the VITA. And just have better games to play on the PS5 indoors 🤷♂️ I do sometimes wish Sony committed more to their mobile division (I’ve given up on a VITA2)
@Apfelschteiner
They do take between 100hr - 200hrs to plat, but when it’s almost constant fun that’s a good thing for me. Just means other games are finished and cheaper when I get to them! Lol
I really liked the Yakuza storyline, Judgment not so much, but Lost Judgment was great. Maybe I’m just not that sophisticated, but I really don’t need a hard hitting story full of complex themes, just a fast paced plot and wacky side content. When things get too po-faced in games it really starts to turn me off them in fact.
The only thing I lament is that they are far less seedy than they used to be. Sega (or more likely Sony) sanitised them too much IMO.They lost a lot of their character in that respect.
Moves are so good…but k ok fly in VR. Played a couple of “lightgun” games with them in PSVR and they are great, but i a 3D space, not pointing at a screen. Gyro would be better for pancake gaming.
@Apfelschteiner
Lol, I gave up on zero due to Mahjong, but went back and learned the game 3 years later, and got the plat. Love it now.
Sped through 7 of the Yakuza plats in one year, and I now have all the mainline, as well as both Judgement games, and I’m currently working on Lost Paradise. This is now my favourite series of all time, and much of the fun and accomplishment came from the journey to platinum them.
Definitely go back and try. Mahjong is easy enough if you remember a few simple rules (when to steal, how to block a win against you, what tiles to discard at the start)
@Apfelschteiner Definitely worth it ( I personally am unlikely to play many old games unless they have a new trophy campaign added). And I know they patented a method, but that was before the article I found. Of course it could have been improved since then.
@Isle_Delfino_Man
I agree it would be best on PSVR, but the PlayStation controllers have the same motion tech as the switch ones. Criminally under-utilised by devs, but can make a big difference for precision aiming even on a flat screen.
@get2sammyb I personally really hope there is no rewind functionality! I know, I know, I “don’t have to use it”, but I would. I know I would. It just makes every game I play with it cheap and easy. Sorry people with will-power, but my fingers are cross that it isn’t included. I don’t think it will be.
@Apfelschteiner
Yes, I also said it’s nice to have a marker to remember accomplishments and reminisce about the games. For me it’s largely treated as a new campaign to enjoy though. Would I have enjoyed the Yakuza series if I didn’t go for all the trophy challenges? Sure. But not as much and for half as long.
@WexMajor
Yes, I just realised that and edited my reply, lol.
You are right, I don’t really see a digital trophy as existing separate from what is done to achieve it. They are one and the same to me, named for and in existence due to the tasks they represent. I hope these old games are given these new challenges/trophies for something new to do for those I have played, and / or in case I find the narrative campaign weak.
@WexMajor
They are the same though right? Task / challenge, same thing. For me, completing a linear story campaign is often less interesting than getting to the end of the trophy campaign. Sure, a platinum trophy has zero value just as getting to the null point at the end of a game has zero value, the fun is in accomplishing what you need to in order to get there.
Edit: reading through, I see that you might be agreeing with me, but just saying that giving a trophy for accomplishing the task is meaningless. I would largely agree (accept it’s nice to have a marker to remind and reminisce).
