I think you're being a bit harsh on Tomb Raider multiplayer. There's been plenty of cases when I've played one match of multiplayer in games and gone "nope" and never played it again, but Tomb Raider actually entertained me for a couple of sessions and I have that uncommon trophy .
I don't think MP detracts from the main game as they are often done by other studios, so it's not like SP only players are missing out on anything or having their experience compromised in any way. If you've got all those assets to play around with, you might as well try something else with them. I don't really see an issue here.
@get2sammyb Also I'm not sure whether I'll want the PS3 or PS4 versions. That might sound dumb, but if my friends are playing COD, Assassins and Watchdogs on PS3 I'd probably rather be doing that.
I preordered the PS4 but no games. I don't see the point as I can't ever recall game shortages at launch, only console shortages. I'm looking forward to Drive Club Plus, then pick up whatever's hot.
Good article. It was Lumines on Vita that got my goat. I think those kind of games, where it's not about a story or multiplayer, really benefit from having trophies and I was specifically looking forward to earning lots of them on it. To find that a full price game came with a small trophy list and no platinum was quite annoying. But apparently it's down to devs to sort it out and I guess some don't want to do it. But's what's more annoying is a game like Sound Shapes, a game I don't particularly like, which has a minimal list but they're all gold with a platinum. Those kind of inconsistencies shouldn't be happening.
@Confused_Dude I found a weird anomaly with the game. If I played David Bellion in the centre mid of a 4-5-1 formation I nearly always won or got a high score draw, despite the fact that he's not a midfielder or any good. Strange game, but very addictive.
@Visiblemode Yeah I was looking through my Plus backlog and thought I'd give it a shot. It's just really fun and feels good to play. I doubt I'll get platinum as it takes a really special game to make me care about that stuff, plus reasonably doable of course. So far I only have Uncharted 2 and Far Cry 3 plats.
@get2sammyb I've got high hopes for KillZone Vita. But I would love to see more AAA games and PS3 / Xbox 360 ports come to the Vita. The worrying thing is that it didn't see much of a bump from E3, I thought the PS4 integration might help encourage people to buy one now knowing it will come in handy later. That doesn't seem to have happened.
I like my DS3 just fine for FPS games, it's racing games that have been let down by it IMO. Sweaty fingers (not that mine are) slide off R2 too easily and keeping it pressed down for long periods can lead to claw finger cramp. I'm more concerned with these issues than anything else, if anything I prefer playing COD and the like with the DS3, I like the way the analogue sticks roll, but maybe that's just me.
I get the feeling that I get a better deal out of physical media; shop promotions / discounts, having the box on my shelf to look at and being able to trade it in, lend it to people or give it away. But I do like managing my downloads, browsing my digital library and switching between games without having to get up as well. But overall, discs and boxes are better long term value for me I think.
The Last of Us. This game is very good indeed. I'm almost worried about going back to playing more average games with lots of little flaws, after I've finished with it. I'm getting that spoilt by The Last Of Us.
@MadchesterManc A quick look at Amazon bestsellers list tells you that the market has reacted: It's now ahead of PS4 after always being behind, but still in second place to The Last Of Us, which perhaps shows that it hasn't been a massive jump.
@SuperKMx Just a gamer, who seems to be quite prepared to make the case for Mircosoft and then claim neutrality. Just a gamer that thinks that Microsoft is doing something good for motion-based gaming. Come on bro! You need to check out Oculus Rift and Razer Hyrda. Motion-based gaming needs Microsoft like Nintendo needs more colourful characters. Kinect has done nothing for motion-based gaming, in fact it's done more to stimagtise it then anyone else.
@SuperKMx Which nicely comes back to my original point. Why force it onto people if they don't want it? People wanted Wii Sports because they wanted Wii Sports, it wasn't because they wanted Zelda and Mario and ended up with Wii Sports and thought oh! This is actually quite good!
How you have so much faith in Microsoft I don't know.
@SuperKMx So what console is Occulus Rift getting bundled with? Because they sure do seem to be doing rather well don't they. Funny that, if people really want something they'll get behind it. No amount of bundling makes any difference.
@get2sammyb So where exactly were all these great Kinect games at E3? Because if making great games for it was so easy they must have been showing them all of right? Yeah, they weren't showing jack because it basically had/has 2 purposes - jump on the Wii's bandwagon and offer a Minority Report type experience where people can navigate menus with there hands, which they still haven't got right!
@SuperKMx Wow somebody here likes Kinect! "Xbox on!, Xbox TV, Xbox game!" Are you really gonna walk around in your living room talking at your TV? And 100 euros is a big difference irrelevant of camera attachments. It should be the consumers choice if they want to pay for it or not so saying that you'll have to pay an extra 30-50 euro for the PS eye is a good thing, so you can decide yourself, if you want it or not. For most gamers those accessories are hindrances more then anything, unless you really enjoy FIFA knowing when you say a naughty word. And sorry but where are the free games with Xbox live? Go and google all the Plus games that have been made available to it's subscribers, Xbox live has offered nothing that can be considered comparable in value.
@get2sammyb Yes. We'll never know of course, but what if Sony had have gone down a similar route at E3? Surely together they could have killed the used game market. Maybe MS expected Sony to join them...
But you bring up a good point that even though it would seem like we're back to level pegging, in fact Microsoft are still in a bit of a mess because obviously much of their planning has just been thrown out of the window. Sony should still (rightfully) seem like the safer bet for a lot of people. Plus it's cheaper.
BTW don't you get a PS Eye boxed in with the PS4? In the article you say it comes without a camera.
There must have been a knock on effect. The sheer volume of negativity on the internet does trickle down to consumers and influence there purchases. Bad news spreads like wildfire, and nearly everyone likes the used game market so they were quite easily convinced. And that's why they got the poor projections and preorders, so the haters can feel partly responsible IMO.
What a climbdown! i was always going to stick with Sony but I wonder how this will affect the majority. For years Xbots were all over the web strutting their stuff, I expect them to come back out in full force now, and we'll probably go back to some kind of parity again.
Overall though, this is a huge win for the consumers that kicked up a fuss and they deserve a pat on the back. They'll probably all by Xbones now lol.
@Sanquine In the UK? It's the cheapest way to play COD and FIFA. And their online community took off much faster than Playstation's making Xbox 360 the go to place for playing COD and FIFA online with your friends.
I haven't decided if I want Drive Club, The Crew or Rivals. Maybe Drive Club because it's from a Sony studio and because there doesn't appear to be any cop cars in this, which usually just get on my nerves.
@Sanquine Yeah. Sometimes the dominance of the 360 gets exaggerated on the internet because the internet is 80% English and 360 is boss in English speaking countries. But, the 360 is the PS3's little harlot in Europe, Asia and South America. Fair enough, those markets aren't so big but it all adds up.
Great review. I want this game, but with all it's faults I'll be patient and wait for the inevitable price drop. You're right about Grid, that was one hell of a game.
The only game from Microsoft's presentation that made me jealous. I've been eagerly anticipating Respawn's first game and it sucks that I won't be able to play it until after a year. Why you have to piss me off Microsoft!? It's not like I'm going to buy that ridiculous console of yours to play one game.
This is good news. PushSquare has really become the place to be for up to date Sony news.
PlayStation Plus is a great service, even though I'm not currently subsribed as the instant game collection doesn't really have my kind of games. They had a fantastic start with LBP2, Motorstorm and Infamous 2, but now it's kind of meh IMHO.
That's for sure. I still think the majority of hardcore Xbox 360 gamers will plump for the Xbox One because of their commitment to Microsoft. There are so many more reasons to become attached to a single brand then there were before, like friends lists, gamer scores and online membership. I have a lot of British friends and I can tell that Microsoft will continue to own their mindshare on gaming. When they can't play the latest Fifa or COD on 360, they'll get Xbox Ones. Sony are still suffering from the botched launch of the PS3. There's a whole generation of gamers in the UK that think Playstation is an inferior product.
@Paulg_78 Yeah. I've got no idea why Most Wanted has a metacritic of 84% while The Run is on 68%. It should be the other way round. Sometimes I think reviewers just can't be bothered.
Impressive graphics, but the multiplayer demo is much more interesting IMO. I'm pretty much done with playing COD and COD copy single player campaigns, unless they improve the AI of the enemies.
@TheRealBatman I was very excited by the music, setting, title, quote, graphics, London, Whitechapel. But slightly put off by the fact that there are 4 main characters, all with various big weapons and hordes of zombiefied creatures. Overall though, i'm more positive than negative.
@Sanguine I hope not! Looking around the web, lot's of people are referring to it as a steampunk shooter. I suppose there's nothing wrong with that, but it has dampened my initial excitement.
@Sanquine me too and the location is very interesting. However, after repeat viewings, it might not be that great after all. 4 player coop, over-powered weapons and generic enemies seems to really be what's in Order.
I can't say I agree. Those Microsoft presenters seem too far removed from gamers, whereas some of the Sony guys are really likeable and come across as being sincere. I find the whole branding and public relations of Microsoft to be heavy-handed and patronising. I certainly wouldn't hold them up as a standard.
I let my Plus membership lapse and haven't found a good reason to resubscribe yet. I'm interested to see what is behind the paywall and what isn't. Like Autolog in NFS is that behind a paywall? What about messaging friends? I don't play that much online competitive multiplayer, but I do like the asynchronous stuff, comparing online trophies and occasionally some coop. I guess I'll have to pay for all that now with PS4 unfortunately.
I did preorder a PS4 and was going to preorder Drive Club. But not sure if I should now as there will be a free to play version with Playstation Plus. I guess I'll wait for more clarity.
