I’m a massive RE fan, played all the main instalments all the way back from 1995 till today. The latest entry fell flat to me and I scored it a 7 for reasons below:
A) the plot was nonsensical even for a RE game. Introduces a villain (zemo) who has no connection to the original game or previous plots who’s already superhuman- so why go searching for mind control. Scientist who can ride a bike and shoot a RPG one handed!
B) graces campaign should have been a mainline entry like 7 or village set in the asylum for a good 10 hours. Not combined with Leon’s.
C) Leon’s gameplay felt like RE6 and not in a good way, he practically starts off fully armed rather than scrambling for obsolete 90s weapons in nuked Racoon city. Credits and a crate instead of a merchant - who would have fit in the Racoon City wasteland.
D) the nostalgia callbacks should have been the whole game. Leon forced to return unarmed to a sealed off Racoon city and fend for himself using scraps and salvaged weapons. Instead we visit the RPD for 30 mins.
E) bosses were relatively easy and typical RE - shoot the glowing blobs… and one of the bosses was a RE2 callback who stalked you the whole game, you kill him in one boss fight. Same goes for another RE2 character.
F) the choice of endings was odd either one happy ending or one miserable one…
G) the game implies that the world is ruled by corporations selling bio weapons, yet the last 10 years worth of entries haven’t fleshed that world out. Maybe RE5 and RE6 focused on it?
If I’d bought this physically I’d have it for sale on eBay having completed it, which is a first for me and a RE game as I replay the others at least once a year.
Tried the demo, didn’t enjoy the hacking element. Maybe my brain / reflexes are not what they once were….
Which is a shame as I’d been following this game with interest over the last few years.
@Scottyy It would have been logical, however MS pivoted last year and by then gears E-Day had been in development for several years so no time to release 1,2, and 3 on PS5 prior to that.
@Slayer25c RE6 gameplay (and the plot) just felt like they turned the dial upto 11 for the sake of turning up the dial. With Leon acting more like Dante.
hmmm not sure how i feel about Leon's gameplay being more of RE6. One of the many issues i had with RE6 was Leon becoming John Wick - before John Wick.
Absolutely amazed by how bad Ubisoft has fumbled this remake. First it evolved into Skull and Bones that took nearly a decade and was an absolute farce of a finished product. Then the remake itself is delayed.
Interesting decision by Amazon, I can see their thinking to try and unite all the games into 1 cannon and to celebrate 30 years by remaking the original first game. Just makes me wonder why they didn’t remake TR2 rather than jump to the sequel of the last ever game. At the end of the day if the games are good no one will care anyone about the timelines.
@StitchJones That would be an awesome gameplay detail. Would love to see it in action and spend the game collecting CD's to make the sword more powerful etc. Now im going to be disappointed if Naughty Dog dont do this.
god the lack of synchronisation between IP owners and their media arms is appalling. For instance Sony own Twisted Metal, releases a TV show, cancels the live service game. Crash Bandicoot the TV series but no crash game to sync it with. Activision now want to do a Call of Duty game 10 years after the IP has peaked. Just a severe lack of joined up thinking.
hmmm odd, as xbox in the last few years spent billions to acquire several iconic gaming studios, took their IP's and where they could turned them into exclusives solely for Xbox.
Only when they spent 70 billion on purchasing activision (for COD) and forced to ensure multi-platform have Xbox buckled and done an about face to become a publisher and this is due to financial pressure from Microsoft to recoup their losses.
Not because they believe exclusives belong on every platform
@Shinnok789 Kind of late the PS has been missing a kiddie mascot for decades. They had sackboy for the PS3 in my opinion but did little captalise on that. The PS5 is now ending its lifecycle and Sony only just think they now need a mascot?
I was initially intrigued by the original trailer they showed 4 years ago but the more I see of the gameplay the less appealing I find it. Shame as futuristic sci fi shooter should be right up my alley.
@Dragoon1994 I reckon they could remake the PSP games as it’s still Kojima all the way through them gameplay and storyline wise, just need a graphic overall which this team have now proven they’re capable of
@somnambulance The two PSP games would make sense linear storylines wise as they continue the big boss / MGS3 storyline and the gameplay is similar if not identical to MGS3.
Think I’ve debated with you before regarding if MGS5 is supposed to Kojimas meta for actual phantom pain.
@LifeGirl Think you’ll find they remade MGS3 because it was easiest and the sanest choice. MGS5 is technically unfinished, MGS4 is stuck on PS3 hardware. MGS1 would require the full remake treatment not a simple remaster which is what has been done to MGS3 and acts as the first standalone game in the series from a lore perspective to a newcomer of the series.
IO should have and did know better or could you know played the game before releasing it. They have their own successful franchise and a second one due out soon (007) so how they let this slop out the door when they knew what video game standards are expected is beyond me, other than they wanted the money.
I'll definitely be picking this up due to being a Bond fan, i love the Hitman games and this is released just after my Birthday.
The driving sections didn't look great was my main gripe and the Aston Martin didn't sound like a car, let alone an Aston being revved to high heaven. However we only saw snippets so hopefully in the actual game that section is more 'wow'.
If it was MW2019 and rated 18 with a great director then I’d be all in. However, I suspect that won’t happen at all.
Seems like Hollywood are a bit late to the party as surely COD peaked over a decade ago and audiences might of been more receptive to a gun ho pro American film.
Just playing through the chronological storyline alongside the ps5 upgrade. Last time I played the game was on release over 5 years ago! Quite liked it and a strong defender of the game / plot during the internet flame wars.
However playing this chronologically the first 2 hours+ are literally a walking simulator and very tedious if it wasn’t for Naughty Dogs writing. The game mechanics as mentioned in the article are out of sync e.g. not being told how to use the flashlight.
This looks amazing like cyberpunk and bioshock had an illegitimate love child. Definitely need to go and play the first one, even though push square gave it a 6…
Odd one, i was looking forward to this game after playing the first one (during a sale) resulting in a game which i thought was quite unique and interesting in its own way. I was quite miffed when the studio was bought by XBOX and became an exclusive and therefore i would be unable to play it. However, having read the comments here and on previous articles regarding the game it appears that i haven't and won't be missing much if i skip this, shame as i mentioned in my opening sentence this game was quite interesting, shame that doesn't seem to have been expanded upon by the developers, in fact the reverse seems to have occurred.
Well i'm loving the game, price didnt bother me as i went all in on the Collectors Edition and thought it was pretty good value for the price. I can see Gamepass might have cannabilised the sales but thats on XBOX / MS and their subscription strategy and whether long term that strategy remains cost effective. I think id Software got the balance right a bit of 2016 and a bit of Eternal.
Long term i suspect MS will remove themselves from the console market and solely rely on becoming a publisher and subscription company, mainly due to their massive expenditure in buying Bethesda and Activitision and over reaching themselves financially, hence why XBOX eclusives are now on the PS5 to offset that potential loss. Gamepass will be on the PS5 at some point, mark my words.
I’m ten levels in, loving it so far. Started on a harder mode than I normally do. Played around with a few settings as well to tailor it to my style, which I found unique to this game. Liked 2016 Doom, loved Eternal. This game is the best of both worlds.
Bought the Collectors edition - which got held up in customs alongside a £71 non disclosed import tax, which was duly refunded resulting in the package arriving a day later than promised so no early access for me!
On level 5, so far so good i'm enjoying it, you can alter the various settings so you can get a mix of Doom 2016 and Eternal style game play. Enemies can be cranked up to be more aggressive or not and i'm loving the story so far. Graphic wise i think it looks amazing.
Just completed the game as of last night. Overall a pretty good game. Visually it is stunning and the nostalgia hits you right in the feels. The plot is pretty good to be honest and certainly feels good enough to act as a Indiana Jones film, certainly better than the 4th and 5th films.
However, the gameplay is a tad basic and is very much a stealth game, due to indiana facing more than 2 people hes dead.
Some of the design choices of the levels are poor i.e. finding the underwater entrance guarded by the snake, escaping the chamber that fills with sand. The camera unlocks hints to puzzles but puts the answer in the journal without informing you. I often found myself selecting the camera when i wanted the first aid kit and vise versa. Not sure why indiana has a satchel as i put very few things in it. All needed a bit of tweaking to make the gameplay better.
The combat, as mentioned, is basic and is effectively a boxing simulator and i was tiring of the repetition just before the game ended. I get that Indiana jones isnt Rambo but the game had several weapons and they were more useful as baseball bats! Yes there are manuals to improve Indiana but he doesn't really learn any new skills (see far cry as a better example). The guns cant be carried permanently and if Indiana moves up or down stairs or across an area the game makes Indiana drop the shotgun / rifle so its left behind and your back to using your revolver or fists.
The final fight was a bit lacklustre especially when we consider the campaign has been building up to this moment it ends in a boxing match, followed by a one armed boxing match.
However, it is still a game i'd strongly recommend purchasing or playing. If there is a sequel i hope the developers (Machine games) build on what is effectively a very strong foundation.
Well theres a blast from the past, remember playing this on a neighbours PC back in the early 90s. Wouldn't mind a modernised 3D version if thats the intention, not sure i can revisit 2D games.
As a 40 year old gamer Sackboy’s PS4 / PS5 platformer is up there as one of the best released. due to reading pushsquare article regarding the serves switching off for his PS3 little big planet I bought and played solely for the amazing campaign, this still holds exceptionally well today against any competitors.
Sony dropped the ball to turn him into a mascot, similar as Crash Bandicoot could have been for the various generations of playstation. Guess Astrobot is expected to fulfil this role going forward.
Oh and who the ***** camps with the lights on in their tent and discusses kissing techniques when there’s a zombie apocalypse going on around them and the zombies react to noise!
Hmm not a great episode.i wasn’t feeling the psychological rage that Ellie displayed in the game at the death of Joel and her regret at not setting things right before he died.
