Massively underwhelming for me, unfortunately. There were a few neat little reveals, but a lot of it was just recycled announcements with sprinkles of new information. PlayStation needs more first party studios in Japan and other Asian territories if they wanna make waves there again, or at least collaborate with other studios for second party games based on their legacy Japanese IP.
I'd love to see Loulan: The Cursed Sand and Phantom Blade 0 get release dates. It'd be cool to see a new Square Enix remaster, like for FF13 trilogy, Star Ocean 3 or Drakenguard, and a look at smaller, quirkier Japanese/Asian games. No matter what gets announced, it's nice to see PS doing a surprise SoP focused on Asian projects when their market focus these last few gens has definitely shifted.
I was almost certain the Portal would flop, but to my surprise it's been a breakout hit in sales. Whether it's because family members are hogging the TV or if someone simply wants to do some gaming in bed, I can see the use case for it. It'd be cool to see them do an OLED model with hall effect joy sticks, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi 6 capabilities.
There's so many anime/manga IP that'd make for an epic first or second party PlayStation game. Chainsaw Man, Jujutsu Kaisen, Frieren, Dragon Ball, Berserk, Devilman, Slam Dunk, Evangelion or Vagabond are all ripe for the picking imo.
For God's sake, Nixxes is right there! Have them remaster games from the PS2/3 era. So many dormant franchises need some love like Sly Cooper, Infamous, Jak and Daxter, Ape Escape, etc. It'd be a great way to tee up certain studios to deliver new entries in at least some of those IP.
Crazy good numbers for a Sony game in Japan these days and that's just physical copies too. Very curious about the global sales units sold. Hopefully, we get an update soon.
Exactly the type of acquisitions and/or partnerships PlayStation should be investing in. I'd love to see them continue to partner with, or purchase if need be, Ember Labs, Sloclap, or BlueTwelve Studio. As long as management has measured expectations and lets them do what they want relatively speaking, I think they'd make great PS studios.
I'd love if it was a Showcase, but any presentation is still exciting. Hoping to see the GOW Metroidvania and/or collection, Saros, Wolverine and an update on Marvel Tokon (new character reveals, story mode, etc.). Anything beyond that is a bonus for me. Third party wise there's a lot of potential reveals, like the rumored Drakengard announcement, FF9 Remake, KH4, Knights of the Old Republic Remake or the reported new Castlevania game as part of Konami's resurgence.
This has me hopeful we'll get some substantial announcements in the next presentation, whether it's a State of Play or Showcase. If nothing else, give me news on reported or confirmed titles, like Marvel Tokon, GOW Metroidvania, Saros and Wolverine. Anything else, whether first, second or third party, is a bonus.
Yeah I get it. The reputation and news cycle has definitely lifted Silksong into another stratosphere of hype. It looks soooooo good and, unless it drops the ball, will almost undoubtedly be a GOTY contender for me.
If it's a Showcase, I'll be pumped to see more Marvel Tokon, Saros, and new announcements like perhaps the GOW metroidvania or maybe Venom (if it still exists that is). If it's a State of Play and they can keep up the cadence of showing strong third party games and one new first party announcement, I'll be happy enough.
I'm pumped for Pragmata. I love that Capcom is doing weird experimental games, even if they're not always for me, like Kunitsu-Gami. I like the twist to combat in the puzzles that activate critical damage in combat and even status effects.
Yeah PlayStation has had it's shortcomings this gen, but adding free content post launch certainly isn't one of them. They've killed it in that department with Astro Bot, Helldivers 2, GOW Ragnarok, Stellar Blade and Spider-Man 2 getting superb FREE content after their initial release. It's something to be appreciated in a day and age where almost anything and everything is monetized from large corporations.
I understand sequels can feel too iterative at times, but expecting a complete overhaul is also silly. At that point, you want a different game. Personally, I don't know how you can be disappointed with Yotei in how many gameplay elements they're adding/building upon. It's got a new map, characters, enemy types along with increased weapon variety, customization options, special modes and quality of life improvements. I wasn't expecting a farming sim with roguelike elements.
PC handhelds have been doing this for years. Certain fanboys trying to console war with this are especially hilarious and ironic. The real question is: How will PlayStation respond, if at all, should the next Xbox console launch with Steam, EGS, etc?
Lots of great games that intrigued me. Lumines Arise, Silent Hill f, 007 First Light, Sword of the Sea, Pragmata, Romeo is a Dead Man, and Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls were definitely highlights. Sony making a fight stick and publishing/co-developing an exclusive Marvel fighting game from Arc System Works is crazy. Shows how committed they are to the FGC and how much they're branching out genre wise. Would've been stronger had there been one or two more big first party reveals, but it was still a solid SoP overall. 7.5/10
Nate is as reliable as they come, but I believe a showcase or state of play is coming. If not in the usual May timeframe, then maybe in June to be apart of SGF? Grubb heard some type of show is being planned, so I'm hopeful.
With the gorgeous character models, lighting, reflections, etc. not to mention how dense the map looks, I doubt it'll be 60 FPS on base PS5. However, I would love if the Pro could at least get a 40 FPS mode as that'd be a great alternative and would look significantly better than the standard 30 FPS mode.
If you can't even make the image quality superior to a last gen half step console, what's the point? The lighting and new modes are nice, but there shouldn't be any downgrades if it's a remaster of all things.
Happy to see Astro Bot seemingly having a long tail. Hoping it at least reaches 4 - 5 million lifetime sales. Also, great to see AC Shadows performing well, both in the U.S. and UK, despite all the disgusting toxicity thrown at it.
What a boringly obvious outcome and, unsurprisingly, they're doing nothing with Factions 1. The art prints are pretty, but with the games/comic having been remastered and/or re-released various times, with this one being $100 or more, I couldn't care less.
Without the multiplayer modes included, my interest goes out the door. Hopefully, those are added, but with how the Modern Warfare 2 remaster was handled, I doubt it.
Honestly, the art direction and sci-fi, electronic OSTs for Marathon has slowly built up my anticipation for the game. Very curious to see a gameplay reveal that seems to be right around the corner.
How awesome would it be if Naughty Dog, Nixxes or some other team remastered Factions 1 multiplayer and it was included in this package? It'd be a great gift to fans after the debacle that was Factions 2, but I ain't holding my breath that Sony would put resources into a multiplayer project that isn't live service.
Honestly, I'm of the belief TLOU3 is happening. There's too much popularity around the franchise and smoke surrounding a third game from Neil and insiders in general. However, making a story with a definitive ending is always the way to go to deliver finality, but it doesn't mean you can't leave potential threads to pull on in the future.
Crimson Desert looks more breathtaking with every trailer. Really curious to see how the game scales to console and what the PS5 Pro can do with it specifically. Can't wait to see more leading up to launch.
In all fairness, there are other important key factors like development cycle, marketing and release timing that can effect the end result. But I do agree that media, industry analysts and enthusiasts have been way too cynical about single player games when there have been many successful ones that say otherwise like SH2 Remake, Metaphor, Astro Bot, Persona 3 Reload, Balatro, Dragon's Dogma 2, and Black Myth: Wukong. It's just becoming a tougher contest for people's time with how many great games come out these days.
Although I have critiques of PlayStation's messaging regarding their shows, there are plenty of games I'm looking forward to. A Midnight Walk looks dark, twisted and gorgeous. Darwin's Paradox looks to be an unexpectedly vibrant and neat platformer from Konami of all devs. Lost Soul Aside looks badass. Tides of Annihilation seems epic with insane visuals. Shinobi: Art of Vengeance has a slick hand drawn art style with cool combat. Saros was a nice surprise that I didn't expect in this particular show. Good stuff all around, just hope they have a showcase or a stronger first party SoP later this year with the games that are currently slated for 2025.
Man, PlayStation needs to do a better job about setting expectations for their SoPs. They need to clearly communicate whether it's a first party or third party focused show. There were good third party games here, but when there's no clarity for the type of games they're promoting it's frustrating.
@twitchtvpat With DS2, they could easily announce a release date or time frame at the State of Play and go more in-depth for the upcoming panel. As for Venom, yeah it could've been cancelled, but I'm hoping it hasn't been. But, at the end of day, we'll just have to wait and see.
Hoping for release date updates/new trailers for Ghost of Yotei, Lost Soul Aside and Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. As far as new reveals, the rumored GOW and/or Twisted Metal collections would be incredible returns to older IP for PlayStation's 30th anniversary. Of course, anything Wolverine or Venom would also be hype as hell.
First, the multiple DMCA takedowns regarding Bloodborne and now this😠They're just taunting us at this point. In all seriousness though, this is really cool for PlayStation fans.
All understandable ports, especially KI considering most of the fighting game community is on PlayStation. With Gears and Halo seemingly going to come over eventually, it'd be neat if Rare Replay and the Ori games got ported as well.
Would love to see the entire franchise make its way over to PlayStation, but at the very least, a port of Bayonetta 2 with better fidelity and performance would be awesome.
Final Fantasy VII proves that music and booze will always be the universe's ultimate saving grace. Let us hope PS is always blasting Nobuo Uematsu scores and shot gunning Asahi.
If acquisitions must happen, and to Sony and many big corporations the answer is yes unfortunately, then I'll take this over risky live service endeavors. If the deal goes through, it'll be interesting to see how PS utilizes From Software, Spike Chunsoft and Acquire. I do think this could be very problematic for the anime and manga industry though. With how tight of a grip Sony already has on it, this will allow them a monopoly and for prices to only go up on their products, especially in the west. Here's hoping they prove me wrong 🤞
I surely hope they eventually recoup all their costs and make a profit. Remedy is too talented of a studio to not deserve it, not to mention Alan Wake 2 is amazing and deserves all the flowers in the world. I'm rooting for them.
Super happy for Astro Bot. Absolutely loving the speed run levels that are giving me an itch for faster times that I've never had before. Hope it goes on to have all the success in the world for how superb of a game it is. Shocking that Space Marine 2 didn't place higher considering all the praise and steam numbers it had initially, not to mention the fact that it's a multiplatform release.
Only ever tried the OG Hyrule Warriors on Wii U, but I dropped it pretty fast, because of how repetitive it got. Hopefully, Origins can shake up the formula and keep things fresh. Visually speaking, it looks nice and I'm curious about the story so we'll see.
Unless Sony lowers the price of the base console or releases a native handheld, I don't see PlayStation's presence increasing in Japan. They have to do something dramatic over there if they have any hope of winning back their home turf from Nintendo.
Overall, it was decent, a solid 7/10 show for me. Exceeded my expectations, which is always nice. Definitely a step up from the last State of Play. Astro Bot & Stellar Blade DLC, A Midnight Walk, Lunar, Legacy of Kain, Horizon Remastered and Ghosts of Yotei made it a good 30+ minute show. Strong variety of games and good pacing all around.
@DennisReynolds I think a setup for Venom sounds very plausible. I personally wouldn't mind seeing the Beetle and Spider verse DLC, especially if its fleshed out enough with Tombstone and the other Spider people. Although, I certainly wouldn't complain about a greater focus on Carnage, considering how cool of a villain he is and how good his introduction was. I truly hope they go dark with him and if he is the main villain of Venom, maybe lean towards an M rating even.
@DennisReynolds Yeah I could very much see them trying to replicate what they did with Ragnarok. They generally have some sort of presence at the TGAs so it's very possible. It's also possible the timetable has been pushed for the DLCs release next year. While it's possible it could've been scrapped, I doubt it, because it'll make for a nice Complete Edition for both PC and PS5. I just want them to announce something for Christ's sake😂
Not expecting much on the first party front, unfortunately. It'd be nice if there was any Astro Bot or Spider-Man 2 DLC. Any Days Gone or Horizon remaster that doesn't come with a $10 upgrade path, I personally won't care about. Hopefully some good third party stuff appears from franchises like Resident Evil, Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid.
The only way I get this is if they offer a $10 upgrade path for PS4 owners and add significant additions/improvements to the game. The smaller upgrade fee for pre-existing owners really should be the norm for their remasters if they want the most return on their investment.
I understand the business reasons for why Horizon Zero Dawn and Days Gone get remasters, but, for Christ's sake Sony, apply that same love to older IP if you must go back into the well. I'd love remakes/remasters for Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, Ico, MediEvil, Ape Escape, PaRappa the Rapper, Killzone, SOCOM, etc. Believe me, we could go on.
The precedent of layoffs never seems to end. The fact that it can happen anywhere and everywhere across studios of different sizes and scales makes it all the more unpredictable and hard to watch. Sincerely hope those affected at Ballistic Moon are able to land on their feet.
