@HaveTheSauce This is despite the fact that Battlefield 6 has just released to great acclaim and amazing sales figures, AC Shadows also sold well and was well recived, and CDPR's last full release was one of the greatest bait-and-switches in gaming, and Capcom's last two big games run like smoking hot garbage.

JP, Lily, and Jamie have all found their way into the background as well.

@carlos82 Just like how I'm not going to pretend how FPS's on consoles weren't nearly as popular after Goldeneye vs. how popular they were after Halo. And how Halo sold an entire subscription service just to play it online.

@carlos82 Goldeneye was popular on the N64, sure, but Halo brought it to the console masses proper, and codified a lot of the controls that are still used today.

@AdamNovice Ramming an out-of-universe character into a Tekken-shaped hole doesn't negate the fact that this game is a mess.

Street Fighter 6 is my most engaged with game of this gen. As in, when I'm not playing it, I'm watching guides or high level replays.

@Propaperpusher Sadly it's the economics. Sinking years of work into a game that flops is basically a deathblow for the studio involved. They have to shift those units.

I look to the indie scene for games that take chances.

Plenty of soul! But I do agree with you there's plenty of rubbish (both games and policies) too.

@Exerion76 I mean, you do. Base roster for Tekken 8 was 32, which is way above the complete rosters for the older games (base plus unlocks).

Back in the day you simply wouldn't have got these characters. Or maybe you did, then you had to buy a brand new game entirely to access them.

Pressing "X to doubt" they can top the witchcraft that is Street Fighter 6's netcode.

I've been playing this franchise since 1997, and this game killed it for me.

All the characters feel the same - fish for launcher > do your best damage juggle > repeat. Hyper aggressive gameplay makes the rounds feel "first hit wins".

It's also visual soup at times too.

As someone who's been an early adopter of PlayStation hardware since the PS1, I just don't see the point.

PS5 has been a nice upgrade from PS4 (day one here), but it's been massively underutilised. I'll probably get a PS6 only when my PS5 packs in and it just makes sense to grab one.

See I'm on the other side there - Elden Ring (and Demon's Souls, Dark Souls 1, Bloodborne, Sekiro) are some of my favourite videogames ever made. But I can 100% understand why people don't like them - they're obtuse (often deliberately and overtly so), poor performing (anyone who's navigated Blight Town on the PS3... yeah), and difficult to the point of being no fun, even for the dedicated faithful (see Melania and the last 20% of Elden Ring in general).

I think it falls into the online hyperbolic discourse - say you're disagreeing with someone, plenty of people will take that as "attacking" them, or being "angry", when in fact you're stating something as benign as "pineapple does/does not belong on pizza". It's like they grew up and never learned that conversation can be a give-and-take that's not necessarily 100% in agreement without being disrespectful, so they end up being incapable of using nuance and apply precisely zero of same to anything they engage with.

So a game they don't like is "1/10, worst game evar", etc.

@AhmadSumadi I assume they're trolls. Like those scores are for legitimately broken, irredeemable garbage.

For example I don't like RDR at all (2 even less than 1!). I find the story and gameplay boring, but it's clearly a well-made game(s), stellar production values, knows what it is and what it's trying to accomplish, etc. Which means it's clearly a mile above those scores.

So even if Yotei wasn't your cup of tea, it clearly has all of those redeeming features in place. Pegging it at 1 is the height of internet bollocksology.

@nomither6 Funny that you're pining for the PS3 while lambasting the PS5 for its price... the PS3 was more expensive than the PS5 ever was, and that's even before you factor inflation.

Also on Ghost of Yotei. Have all the main weapons upgraded to the second highest level, loads of the contracts, most of the available map de-fogged... yet the only member of the Yotei Six I've defeated is the guy you have to beat in the first half hour of the story. So I might push on and take one or two of them down.

This is the first game in a very long time that I'm really enjoying. Plus I'm really enjoying my build - easier perfect parry charm, armour that disables regular parries but makes perfect parries more powerful. Nice risk-reward there.

Plus the visual and audio design are top notch.

Not what a lot of people want from their interactive entertainment. At that point just go and watch a Ghibli classic. Or, you know, a Disney.

They miss a trick with these colours as they're all relatively close. Like gimme a hot pink with white tiger print, or one like those old Ibanez guitars with multicoloured hydrodipped look.

It's pretty good. First few hours feel kinda leaden with flashbacks, barely interactive bits, and sod-all abilities.

Improves greatly once you get into the meat and bones, start getting one or two new weapons, armours, charms, etc.

Have to say it's got some of the best sound design I've heard in a game.

@carlos82 I really don't see people being put off by the cost of a console stumping up even more cash for a PC that will age out faster. And their libraries will have to be rebuilt from the ground up.

Ghost of Yotei. It's okay, I guess. Far too much exposition, flashbacks, unskippable cutscenes.

If I wanted to watch a samurai film, I'd put on Yojimbo. Might just go play Sekiro (again) for some sword fighting kicks.

Saluting the halcyon PS2 years. More games than you could count coming at a steady pace, some wild and original ideas, they mostly just worked, no MTX. Meanwhile today, games have shinier graphics, while they still mostly play the same.

The industry is cooked.

@Artois2 That's 100% true. It's a very "time and place" game, but oh boy was that time and place special.

Yup. Already turned Ghost of Yotei off out of boredom.

@Artois2 It's a relic of its time, and also influenced basically everything that came after it.

I used to play CE and Halo 2 multiplayer at a friend's back in the day, and it's some of my best gaming memories.

I also picked up a Series X in 2022, and tried to play those campaigns but I couldn't because the gameplay is so horribly dated now.

I found the original Alan Wake to be a janky, overrated snoozefest, so don't have much hope for the sequel (I also find Remedy to be possibly the most overrated developer to ever exist).
