PS4's Record-Setting US Sales Pace Is Being Comfortably Beaten by Switch 2 1

PS4 is no longer the fastest-selling console in the US, according to Circana sales data.

As we touched upon earlier in the week, over its first three months on the market, the Switch 2 has beaten Sony’s sales record by 5%.

According to analyst Mat Piscatella, writing on BlueSky, Nintendo’s new machine has sold 2.4 million units through the three-month period ending August 2025. This is an improvement on the 2.2 million units the PS4 managed through January 2014.

Obviously, there is some context required here: the PS4 was generally more supply constrained than the Switch 2. But Sony’s console also had the benefit of launching during the holidays, whereas Nintendo’s machine has opted for a quieter part of the year.

The PS5 may have had a shot at beating the PS4’s record, but we’ll never know because it launched during the thick of the pandemic, and was heavily supply constrained for years after its launch.

All of this is good for the industry and the overall health of consoles, of course. Nintendo will be feeling bullish about continuing its trajectory with the release of Pokémon Z-A imminent.

Still, records are made to be broken, and now Sony will be looking to the PS6 to try and snatch this accolade back from Nintendo.

To be honest, we think the transition from PS5 to PS6 is going to be difficult, largely due to economic factors and the fact that it’s getting more and more difficult to demonstrate meaningful upgrades in the console hardware space.

But if Sony can make its next system affordable and have a decent software selection available at launch, then only availability will hold it back from giving these new Switch 2 numbers a decent run for their money.
