MS got itself into this situation all on its own. And even if you leave the PS5 out of the equation, it changes absolutely nothing, because Day 1 PC releases and Game Pass are still there. Both are part of the problem...
Theoretically, MS would have to acquire SIE! And even then, I think it’s more likely they’d manage to ruin the brand than become the market leader.
One can only speculate about what happened between Sony and SE. But I think it simply came down to SE wanting more money and Sony refusing because they realized FF was on the decline.
You can be sure that if Sony had kept paying SEs Debt (and perhaps even acquired them down the line), SE would still be raving about how incredibly awesome the PS5 is and the advantages of developing exclusively for it.
