Fans Are Already Debating Whether God of War's PS5 Trilogy Will Cut the Series' Sex Scenes 1

Sony is remaking the original God of War trilogy and it’s already raising some interesting debates online.

While the series mellowed out with the more recent Norse titles, the original PS2 and PS3 games – set within the Greek mythology – had a more cartoonish tone.

For starters, they were incredibly violent, culminating in several wince-inducing scenes in God of War 3, like where Kratos physically tears the head off Helios.

They also all had sex minigames, which were optional but rewarded you with a big deposit of red orbs with which to level your weapons up with. (Yep, those original God of War games were really silly, looking back.)

While nothing explicit is ever shown, the first game depicts a pot wobbling on a table while the protagonist gets to work. Meanwhile, the third game shows two semi-dressed ladies responding to the rumpy-pumpy while the anti-hero has his way with Aphrodite.

But fans are already wondering whether these scenes will be retained for the upcoming remakes.

Obviously, we don’t really know how Santa Monica Studio is approaching this project: will they be faithful remakes like Demon’s Souls or Dead Space, or adaptations like Resident Evil 2?

We reckon they’ll probably be closer to the former, retaining the original fixed camera angles and gameplay, with only minor tweaks and gameplay alterations.

As for the sex scenes, well, they are juvenile and may not play from a modern perspective. But they do, in a way, help characterise Kratos: he’s a monstrous individual in the original trilogy, and that’s what helps make the Norse games so powerful overall.

It’ll be fascinating to see what decision Santa Monica Studio makes here. Cutting the minigames will predictably lead to a backlash – but maintaining them may preserve a mid-2000s idea of “mature” which may feel more cringe than cutting-edge today.

Where do you stand on this debate?

Should the God of War remakes keep the original sex minigames?
