@The_New_Butler a lot of things seems impossible at the start of the generation, rhat's why end of generations games are usually a big leap from the game of the start and middle of the generation. Just look at Uncharted 1 and The Last of Us, same hardware. I'm sure rhey were a lot of things cut from Uncharted 1 that made it in Uncharted 3.
@The_New_Butler @Richnj and like I've mentioned on another article, Guerilla started developping HZD at the start of the PS4 generation, they did not have access to current compression/decompression method that have made TLOU II and Ghost of Tsushima so quick to load, it might be entirely possible to make flyable mount on PS4 right now. There's always a gap between the start and end of a generation. Let's wait and see what they have in store before accusing the PS4 of holding features because ot its hardware.
The assumption that because of the power of the PS5 and the speed of its SSD it means that from now on every game will be revolutionary in their game design is a dangerous one to have. You are all setting up yourself for a big disappointment. Breath of the Wild won GOTY and inspired a lot of game that came out and will come out on a mobile SoC barely more powerful than a PS3. Power isn't everything.
@rjejr Yeah I noticed that too, I'm guessing the it's gonna be dynamic resolution with 4K upscaling for the performance mode. That seems like the most obvious choice
@ThaBEN I don't think Guerilla Games had access to the Kraken compression technology. You look at the last two games of the PS4 generation, The Last of Us Pt II and Ghost of Tsushima, apart from a long loading time at the starts, the loading time everywhere else are incredibly fast considering they were working on HDDs. Naughty Dog also updated TLOU pt I to load significantly faster, they might have access to new techniques that will allow them to do what they thought impossible when they started developping HZD at the start of the PS4.
@get2sammyb It doesn't bother me that much I do feel like the effect might be a bit too strong. Won't hinder in anyway my enjoyment of the game when it comes out !
I tried Concrete Genie and it was a bit too passive for me, I couldn't get into it but the idea was interesting and I cannot wait to see what they do next, especially with the help of Sony Pictures Animations !
Absolutely thrilled to hear that Team Asobi is being expanded ! Japan Studio will be dearly missed tho. I hope we can see something from Team ICO (well...their new studio) soon enough !
@Intr1n5ic Yeah I agree, I do not remember the firsr year of a new console being this full of great exclusives. We got Miles Morales, Sackboy, Demon's Soul, Returnal, Ratchet & Clank, Horizon FW, Kena Bridges of Spirits, without Covid we might have got God of War and GT7 aswell ? It is insane. What did the Ps4 or Ps3 had for their first year ? I remember the memes about ps3 and ps4 having ''no games''. Plus the backward compatibility between both consoles makes it easier than ever to develop for both, they could have just easily cut the ps4 version of those games and we would all be saying how amazing these are and how they surely could not run on the puny PS4.
Only 3 years ago when God of War 2018 came out, we were all shouting out the top of our lungs how truly amazing the game was, only 3 years later and somehow the sequel will suddenly be mediocre because it's held back by the PS4. Good games don't require incredible top of the line hardware. For my money the Switch has better exclusives than Microsoft and it's a 10W mobile SoC !
And I might add that Playstation was very, VERY clear that they intended to support the PS4 for at least the next three years. That was in 2019.
@Malmall20 look around, there's a lot of people that aren't exactly fond of the idea on this comment section alone. It's as if the people attacking Microsofr about it might not be the one praising it when Sony does it...
On the bright side it almost certainly means that we'll get at least two GOW and Horizon Game on the PS5 (and retroactively in the ps4 !). Yes a ''proper'' Next gen GOW won't come until further down the line but making it a PS5 exclusive would have certainly delayes that release to 2022 or even 2024. So now you're 3 years into the cycle of the new console, you spend 4 years making another one and you either release it at the end of the generation or you hold back, wait for new hardware and release it two years inti the new cycle, etc, etc... Instead of getting rushed tech demos (heavenly sword, lair, knack, killzone 4) we're getting great games that have had the time to mature and in turn run incredibly well on the new hardware setting the bar higher than ever for the rest of the generation, that's great !
@OmegaStriver well yeah that's how most games are gonna be going forward, some will definitely use the new hardware capabilities like Rift Apart for sure, but not every game will suddenly have level hoping gimmicks and devs were already pretty good at hiding loading screens. I do agree that I cannot wait to see some truly new level design not bounded by the limitations of old HDDs or game using raytraced reflections in its game design, I'm with you on that ! But even with those limitations in loading times and cpu/gpu power, Uncharted 4's madagascar level is still absolutely insane and I don't think it's that big of a deal if for the forseeable future some games are still releasing on PS4. They were developped during that generation after all, game development takes a lot of time, the big AAA new experiences are maybe two years in development right now with a lot of RnD and change of workflow, it's gonna take a while. Let's enjoy the fact that these cross generational games have made 60fps more popular than ever !
@OmegaStriver how so ? The game features instant loading times while traversing the differents biome, near instant loading time on deaths, a ton of enemies and enemies' projectile on screen, an absolute marvelous use of the audio engine aswell. It might have ran on a PS4 just like The Witcher 4 or DOOM run on switch.
Honestly, I think this whole cross generation deal has been a good thing for gaming as a whole, it cemented 60fps for the next gen (helped by the midgen upgrade) and the launch window was pretty much free of very mediocre games rushed to make the launch day deadline.
Plus Game development takes time so of course the "proper"PS5 games will come later that's how it has always been. Good hardware doesn't mean better games just like ''bad'' hardware means bad games.
Edit : on that note, I'm sure games like TLOUII could have been delayed and released as PS5 exclusives and we would all be saying ''oh yeah there's no way this could run on a OG PS4''
Oh boy... Honestly, I don't think the model changed THAT much, it's probably just the softer lighting that soften her face a lot compared to the ''harsher'' lighting of the first one. I might be wrong.
@Toypop PS4 had some of the best game I've played in a long while, good games, great games can be made on old hardware. I agree that the wait for ''true next gen experience'' like they've promised us feels long. Ratchet & Clank being the first real taste of what can be done on the new hardware. But at the same time the constraint of the past did not stand in the way of absolute gems.
@Toypop I'd honestly take this approach to the one from the PS4 and PS3 era, I yad absolutely no interest in a ps4 until Bloodborne and then the next interesting exclusive for me was Uncharted, I waited 2018 to get one. I've had a PS5 day one and played 4-5 exclusives on it and loved every minute of it. And we're still getting Ratchet and Clank, Kena and Horizon later this year, that's insane to me. Plus, HZD came out in 2017, the sequel probably started right away, they probably didn't know what the PS5 would look like.
@get2sammyb I haven't watched DF video on the subject but it did distract me a bit during the demo, especially when Aloy was running through brightly lit and shadowy areas of the forest the lighting on her stayed almost the same. I understand why it's done and it doesn't look bad ! My personal preference would be to tone it down just a tad qo that Aloy maybe sits a bit more in the world but I definitely understand the need to make her very clear and I'd be okay if they didn't change anything.
@Richnj Don't ''calm down'' me dude, I haven't insulted you or anything, no need for that kind of tone. I'm not accusing you or attacking you in anyway, we're just talking.
''I like how we've gone from "it's a visual trailer, there's nothing to talk about gameplay wise" to "there's lots of people talking about gameplay" I'm not the same person you were talking to earlier, everyone who doesn't entirely agree with you has the exact same view on the subject, I'm just giving my honest opinion, I've seen quite a lot of people here and online talking about how the game plays, that's all.
And I agree with you that overall we talk too much about graphics over things that really matters in games, Gameplay being the first victim of that but at the same time a gameplay reveal of a sequel is not gonna give you a lot of meat. Because it is just that, a reveal just like a game reveal doesn't actually reveal much usually apart from the title and a quick look. Look at the Elden Ring reveal trailer.
What I want to know from the game is if they'ce fixed the crafting issues I had with the first game, if the side quests are a bit more involved, how is the melee combat really like, how about player customisation but all of these comes later because this is just a first look at how Forbidden West plays. We'll see more later.
@Richnj well it's a gameplay ''reveal'' so it isn't a deep dive in the systems that make up the game. It's a short vertical slice that pretty much plays like the first game but with some added and polished stuff there isn't much to be talked about or speculated. And there's plenty of people commenting on how the game plays !
It looks amazing ! Can't wait to discover the open world because the demo felt very linear and scripted but that's alright. I have some minor gripes with it that won't impact much my enjoyment of the game, first is the character lighting, as some people have pointed out, it's a bit too much, her hair is constantly backlit, it's a bit jarring when she starts moving around or traversing shadows areas, I get that the character needs to look nice and visually clear but I feel like it might be a bit too strong. Minor grip. The other one is the same one I had with the first game, Aloy just talk too much, not just during gameplay, she just has a tendency to say out loud what you the player is supposed to do next, you don't even have the time to think about it that she says ''oh look I should go there and do that'' yeah I know. Anyway, minor gripes ! Other than that, the game world looks stunning ! The underwater environment aswell. The improvement of melee combat and the mention of ''combos'' have me quite a bit excited ! Traversal seems a lot better than the first one aswell ! It had the tendency to look absolutely beautiful but quite static, here less so. The facial animations are way better aswell ! I wonder if Kojima Production helped develop tools for that or if Guerilla came up with their own. Anyway, quite excited about this one, hopefully it turns out great !
@truerbluer I wholeheartedly agree and from a personnal point of view it touches some of my concerns with GamePass. Not having to shell out 70 bucks for a game on opening day is great, of course but what I am afraid is that if there is no incentive to justify the price why should developpers care ? You're still gonna be able to play it day one, that's one of the problems I have with Netflix, it's quantity over quality, they don't care so much about quality since everybody get access to everything as long as you're subscribed. And on the same note, there is a completely subjective link between what you've paid and how much you might be patient with a game. I've picked up a lot of games through PS+ that I just played for an hour or two and abandonned and I feel like if I had paid for these games I might have played them for longer.
That's just the way I see things and I still think GamePass is a great concept.
@K1LLEGAL I'm pretty sure there is some insentive from the shareholders to reassure them in the face of Microsoft being able to snatch a 7.5 billions publisher but also there's always the risk that the next big third party game might get bought by the competition or maybe Microsoft pays upfront the right to put it day one, for free in GamePass making the 60-70$ alternative on Sony, not that sexy. It's probably gonna get worse
@TechaNinja let's drop the whole ''AAA Game devs are lazy'', it's not an easy job and therens enough horror stories from any kind lf studio, big and small to prove it.
Day One buy here, I've been meaning to play it but I'd rather do it on PS5 than on PC (comfier, I can share with my SO, I rarely play anything other than FPS on PC)
@mikeym I want to give Insomniac all the money I can but I just hate pre order bonuses that breaks the game. I had the same problem with Spider-Man 2018. So I'm probably going to get the standard edition and buy the digital after beating the game !
@MrGawain there has already been 8 millions units sold, more than the PS4 in the same timeframe, R&C will do just fine saleswise and God Of War would do the same. (It has probably been delayed to 2022 anyway)
@JapaneseSonic 2009 ! I'm also hoping that this gen has more R&C games aswell, there's 11 games on the Ps3 (counting the HD trilogy) I think and one on PS4 !
Yeah I wouldn't say the shooting in the Uncharted games is the best but reading ''Luckily for them it fits in with the game’s theme and pushes the player towards using stealth head-on''. I mean...isn't that the point of the game ? It's not a TPS ala Gears or even Ratchet and Clank, you wouldn't say that the gunplay in the Resident Evil is bad ? It's part of the whole thing. Oh well...
I feel like some of you have some misconceptions about Digital Foundry, they don't obsess over zooming at 200-400% of the corner of a still image just to show how bad of a job the devs did, they usually just use the zoom to provide visual information on what they are talking about and almost EVERY time they do this they clearly state that it is usually invisible to the naked eye while gaming. They're just doing that for information not to take down the games.
@Nalverus The Last of Us and the Uncharted Games are linear experiences, God Of War is very lite metroidvania at best, Bloodborne is Soulsborne game, The Last Guardian is linear, the only, Ratchet and Clank was linear, Days Gone, Horizon Zero Dawn, Ghost of Tsushima and Spider-Man were open world but it's far from the majority. On Ps5 we've got a 3D platformer (Sackboy), a Rogue like (Returnal), a Souls Game (Demon's Souls), etc etc I do not think it is fair to say that the majority of Sony's output has been open world games
@Ithinkyousuck PS5 has had a better start then Ps3 and Ps4 partly because some of its games are cross generation. How many times we've heard of studios making super ambitious game for the launch of a new console only to be hit real late in the development cycle about the reality of the machine and then barely making it to the finish line with an half assed product. Horizon Forbidden West probably started development way before they got the PS5 devkit and they'll just have to upgrade things here and there to take advantage of the new console, it's too soon to properly create a big AAA open world that takes full advantages of the PS5 capabilities on launch year, these games take 3-5 years to make. Ratchet & Clank games have always had shorter development cycles, Demon's Souls is a remake and Returnal is a much "simpler" game. Yeah I'm also bummed out that it won't take full advantages of the PS5 but I'd rather have a great Cross gen game (Sackboy, Miles Morales) than nothing really interesting for years (Bloodborne came out in 2015).
Don't forget that Bend has started working on a new IP, if Sony were to un-cancel Days Gone 2 it would be at the price of the new game and maybe some of the employee working on it. But who knows maybe it will end up being their game after the new one ? I wouldn't mind.
I would in a heartbeat I just want to be able to play every Ratchet and Clank game on the same console, or at least on something different than a PS3 I just can't stand the dualshock 3.
I tried to try out the demo but I was bored out of my mind by the intro, it felt like a PS3 title but oh well let's get to the real meat. The demo crashed, my progress wasn't saved. Sorry game, I'm not doing that again.
I never had faith in the 2021 release window but to be fair, I'm guessing the industry did not expect the pandemic to stimm be going as strong as it is going right now. Returnal & Kena were demayed, Ratchet and Clank was a ''launch window'' title and is now coming out in June, GT7 is delayed to next year, Horizon is released late 2021. If God Of War had to releasenin 2021 it would have probably been a winter holiday release, if most thing went back to normal...
I wouldn't say I'm "disappointed" in the price, of course I am not but now I'm a bit worried that it will be on the shorter side. As long as it is as good as it looks I'm down with it.
Imagine if FromSoftware patented the Soul gameplay or what if Rogue Legacy patented the "Rogue-like" nature of its gameplay these game mecanics created entire subgenres of games.
@EddieGreenheart I think developpers weren't able to use it because of the pending status on the patent, you don't want to develop something and then find out you gotta pay royalties for a game you've already released or where in the mist of developping.
@SoulsBourne128 Destruction Points will be earn-able at a later date, I am not a big multiplayer guy and I would have probably enjoyed the solo content but I don't think I'll be playing the game anymore at this point (maybe not) and there's no telling how much these challenges costs and how much D pts we xan earn through gameplay. Battlefront 2 was like 40h of play to unlock Darth Vader initially.
I wouldn't be surprised if once the game is sold at 70£ the campaign is either already unlocked or if you get enough Destruction point with your purchase to play the campaign.
@Robinsad What are you on about ? I've looked up the Remaster bricking console and I can't find a single person saying it did, almost every articles is from November 2020 and talking about the Rest Mode/Hard Drive issue that was happening at the launch of the PS5 with the remaster. This has been fix for a while now. I might have missed something so feel free to show me anything but I don't see people constantly complaining about the state of Spider-Man Remastered.
@Dezzy70 I don't think we can simply remove the cross gen titles, the PS5 and Series X were built around Backward compatibility in part to help the transition, Sony has +100 millions PS4 in the wild, it would be stupid to focus on the few millions that managed to get a PS5, it the console didn't have backward compatibily, I'm sure some of the cross gen titles would have simply been PS5 exclusive to help sell the console.

Re: Sony on Upcoming PS5 Games: Wait Until You See What's Coming from Our Third-Party Partners
Re: Returnal's Save System Still Being Investigated, New Content in the Works
@TechaNinja let's drop the whole ''AAA Game devs are lazy'', it's not an easy job and therens enough horror stories from any kind lf studio, big and small to prove it.
Re: Hades Could Finally Be Coming to PlayStation
Day One buy here, I've been meaning to play it but I'd rather do it on PS5 than on PC (comfier, I can share with my SO, I rarely play anything other than FPS on PC)
Re: Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart PS5 Size Isn't So Bad
@mikeym I want to give Insomniac all the money I can but I just hate pre order bonuses that breaks the game. I had the same problem with Spider-Man 2018. So I'm probably going to get the standard edition and buy the digital after beating the game !
Re: PS5 UK Stock Was So Bad in April Even PS4 Outsold It
@MrGawain there has already been 8 millions units sold, more than the PS4 in the same timeframe, R&C will do just fine saleswise and God Of War would do the same. (It has probably been delayed to 2022 anyway)
Re: Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Goes Gold, Ready for June Release on PS5
@JapaneseSonic 2009 ! I'm also hoping that this gen has more R&C games aswell, there's 11 games on the Ps3 (counting the HD trilogy) I think and one on PS4 !
Re: Leaked Document Reveals Xbox's Opinion of The Last of Us 2
Yeah I wouldn't say the shooting in the Uncharted games is the best but reading ''Luckily for them it fits in with the game’s theme and pushes the player towards using stealth head-on''.
I mean...isn't that the point of the game ? It's not a TPS ala Gears or even Ratchet and Clank, you wouldn't say that the gunplay in the Resident Evil is bad ? It's part of the whole thing. Oh well...
Re: Returnal Impresses with Particle Effects and Smooth Performance in Technical Breakdown
Re: PlayStation Studios Boss Wants 'Distinct and Diverse' Range of Games, Sony Committed to Both AAA Quality and Experimentation
Re: Jim Ryan: PS5 Generation Will Have More Exclusive Games 'Than Ever Before'
@Ithinkyousuck @Ithinkyousuck Weirdly enough this big cross-gen phase seemingly cemented that 60fps should be the target for games this generation.
Re: Jim Ryan: PS5 Generation Will Have More Exclusive Games 'Than Ever Before'
@Ithinkyousuck PS5 has had a better start then Ps3 and Ps4 partly because some of its games are cross generation.
Re: Over 15,000 People Have Signed a Petition for Days Gone 2
Don't forget that Bend has started working on a new IP, if Sony were to un-cancel Days Gone 2 it would be at the price of the new game and maybe some of the employee working on it. But who knows maybe it will end up being their game after the new one ? I wouldn't mind.
Re: Talking Point: Would You Buy a PS1, PS2, or PS3 Emulator for PS5?
I would in a heartbeat I just want to be able to play every Ratchet and Clank game on the same console, or at least on something different than a PS3 I just can't stand the dualshock 3.
Re: Crash Bandicoot 4 PS5 Upgrade Still Not Available for Some Three Days After Release
Can't upgrade here in France ! But my account is in the UK. Bought it on sale last december.
Re: Hands On: Incredibly Rough Outriders Demo Kills Our Hope for This Looter Shooter's Launch
I tried to try out the demo but I was bored out of my mind by the intro, it felt like a PS3 title but oh well let's get to the real meat. The demo crashed, my progress wasn't saved. Sorry game, I'm not doing that again.
Re: God of War Ragnarok Will Release 'When It's Done' on PS5
I never had faith in the 2021 release window but to be fair, I'm guessing the industry did not expect the pandemic to stimm be going as strong as it is going right now. Returnal & Kena were demayed, Ratchet and Clank was a ''launch window'' title and is now coming out in June, GT7 is delayed to next year, Horizon is released late 2021. If God Of War had to releasenin 2021 it would have probably been a winter holiday release, if most thing went back to normal...
Re: Worry No Longer, Kena: Bridge of Spirits Is a $40 Game
I wouldn't say I'm "disappointed" in the price, of course I am not but now I'm a bit worried that it will be on the shorter side. As long as it is as good as it looks I'm down with it.
Re: Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Dated for 11th June
FINALLY YES ! June can't come soon enough
Re: Warner Bros Under Fire for Patenting Nemesis System
Imagine if FromSoftware patented the Soul gameplay or what if Rogue Legacy patented the "Rogue-like" nature of its gameplay these game mecanics created entire subgenres of games.
Re: Warner Bros Under Fire for Patenting Nemesis System
@EddieGreenheart I think developpers weren't able to use it because of the pending status on the patent, you don't want to develop something and then find out you gotta pay royalties for a game you've already released or where in the mist of developping.
Re: Destruction AllStars' Challenge Series to Be Locked Behind Premium Currency
@SoulsBourne128 Destruction Points will be earn-able at a later date, I am not a big multiplayer guy and I would have probably enjoyed the solo content but I don't think I'll be playing the game anymore at this point (maybe not) and there's no telling how much these challenges costs and how much D pts we xan earn through gameplay. Battlefront 2 was like 40h of play to unlock Darth Vader initially.
Re: Destruction AllStars' Challenge Series to Be Locked Behind Premium Currency
I wouldn't be surprised if once the game is sold at 70£ the campaign is either already unlocked or if you get enough Destruction point with your purchase to play the campaign.
Re: Guess What? Cyberpunk 2077 Still Has Serious Crashing Issues on PS5, PS4 After Patch 1.10
Re: Sony Removed All the PS5 Target Dates from CES 2021 Trailer
@Dezzy70 I don't think we can simply remove the cross gen titles, the PS5 and Series X were built around Backward compatibility in part to help the transition, Sony has +100 millions PS4 in the wild, it would be stupid to focus on the few millions that managed to get a PS5, it the console didn't have backward compatibily, I'm sure some of the cross gen titles would have simply been PS5 exclusive to help sell the console.
