Slay the Spire is very fun. It’s maybe more suited to Switch, where it can be played handheld, but it’s a really engaging and approachable roguelike deckbuilder.
I upgraded just fine with my disc, for what it’s worth. I just had to “buy” the upgraded version with $0, and the disc has to be in the console for me to play.
Finally! I enjoyed this game, but didn’t like that once I’d committed to a run, I couldn’t play anything else on my PS5 until it was over. Reinstalling now.
@Athrum I actually have Strikers but got kind of overwhelmed by the weird combat mechanics and didn’t make it past like the second mission. But I definitely want to give it another try!
This is my first non-licensed musou game (I played the Zelda ones) and I’m loving it so far! Would love to hear any recs for other ones, licensed or not.
While we’re talking about firmware updates - the HDMI handshake still seems to be busted and I can’t believe they haven’t fixed it yet. It makes colors look really muted in HDR and seems to be affected by whatever else is plugged into the tv. Never had this issue with PS4 HDR.
Great timing - I was ready for some high fantasy action with Dark Alliance coming out today, but after reading reviews I’m going to hold off. Kingdoms of Amalur in 4K and Vermintide 2 will have to do for now.
This might be my favorite EDF, actually. The abilities & specials are cool, plus you don’t have to chase down every weapon crate in the level to try to get new guns. I like switching teammates, too! Glad I picked it up.
I really appreciate this upgrade. I enjoyed the game on PS4, but it was hard to return to 30fps for this type of game after getting PS5. I love the physicality and weight of the cars, and it really sings at the higher frame rate.
I was loving the game and was able to look past the bugs until the latest update broke the cutscenes. Now I don’t want to progress the story until they’re fixed.
Love to see Sony give their multiplayer offerings a running start by including them with Plus. And I’m very happy to get the Control PS5 upgrade! Concrete Genie is supposed to be good too, but I could never justify buying it to check it out.
I’ve recently had an issue where the HDR is very dim, with distorted colors (even when the console is connected directly to an HDMI 2.0 port with the included cable). Adjusting the HDR does nothing fix it. The only thing that has worked has been to unplug every other HDMI device from the tv, and reset the TV & PS5, upon which the PS5 has to be force restarted at least a couple of times, with the database rebuild & disk repair, various interminably flashing lights etc. Nothing unexpected for launch, but it’s a shame to have to disable HDR or go through this process just to play. So really hoping that’s fixed!
I have to say, stepping up from a base PS4 to PS5 has really revived PSVR for me. That little extra polish goes a long way in providing comfort and immersion!
Do they all really use Game Boost? Rather than add more games, I’d really like to see as many of them as possible receive a Days Gone-caliber upgrade. That game is gorgeous now. Looks almost as good as Valhalla to my eyes.
I was a senior in high school and working at Software Etc in the mall. A friend at another store had had a Japanese unit running since spring and I was so excited to get my own! I drove to our store first thing in the morning to get mine and weirdly spent a lot of time playing ESPN Xtreme games before going back to the store for my evening shift. What a great day!
I almost forgot the US release of the PS1 was 25 years ago tomorrow. 9/9/95 was etched into my 17 year old brain. I was working working at Software Etc and picked up my console first thing in the morning to play it before I came back in for my evening shift. Good times.
@themcnoisy I hope so. Gamers seem pretty engaged around labor conditions and game studios and the problem of crunch. When adjusted for inflation, today’s $60 releases sell for half of what large-capacity cartridges went for in the 90s. I’m hopeful that there’s an opportunity there to create better conditions at games studios.
Our insistence on low prices for all kinds of products keeps wages down around the globe, and it’s been depressing to see game development staff be exploited. If this can be alleviated by paying what Chrono Trigger cost in the 90s, I’m all for it.
Vanquish & Metal Gear Rising Revengeance are the only reasons I keep my 360 hooked up. Hopefully a Revengeance remaster isn’t too far behind. But that would require Konami to release a fun game, so never mind.
I’m confused by this last part- isn’t that a feature of Apple’s new OS updates? Unless it somehow allows the controller to stay paired with the PS4 while also being paired with an Apple device. That would be awesome.
I loved Borderlands 2 but when’s the last time Gearbox made a great game? Colonial Marines and Duke Nukem Forever really tarnished their reputation in my eyes, and Battleborn got crushed by Overwatch. It would be quite a comeback!
Despite the rough launches of the last couple of Just Cause games, I have a lot of affection for Avalanche as a developer. They’re so ambitious in their pursuit of chaos and destruction, and their games achieve a decent amount of visual polish, though it’s taken a few patches to get there lately. Mad Max, Renegade Ops and the Just Cause series are all pretty solid action games! And JC4 is finally performing ok on PS4, btw.
Is it just me or is Destiny 2 the only game here that requires Pro for HDR? I haven’t played in a few weeks, but the last time I did my tv didn’t switch to HDR mode.
@solocapers My point is that games are much more affordable to the consumer than they have been in the past. And a game like Destiny continues to generate expenses after the disc has been sold, due to things like maintaining servers and a “live” team to continually update the game. If a few pieces of armor are paywalled to pay for that, it doesn’t really bother me. I do wish there were better incentives for playing the game though (aside from it just being fun). It hasn’t captured my attention nearly as much as D1, but maybe that’s a blessing in disguise. There are so many games to play!
@solocapers Ok, then: they’re not “just” cosmetic. However the only effects that they have are cosmetic. And Bungie probably wouldn’t have developed so many cosmetic options if they hadn’t planned to monetize them. AND there are still ways to dress up your character without spending money.
On top of that, games are more expensive to develop and yet cheaper than they’ve ever been. When Chrono Trigger came out in 1995 it cost $80. With inflation it would be almost $130 today.
I don’t see the big deal- the items are all cosmetic and the revenue allows Bungie to continue to support the game in between the paid expansions. I rarely play the game these days, but it’s not because of Eververse.
I was waiting for this! Multiplayer VR games like Star Trek & Werewolves Within are so cool, but dicey propositions when the install base is relatively small. And with no cross-platform play, I've been too nervous to spend money on StarBlood Arena. Hopefully this gets a lot of us into it!
I'll never cease to be amazed by people who had such specific and steadfast expectations for this game. I was very excited about it and read every preview I could find, and what I remember most are articles saying "what do you actually do in No Man's Sky?" And the answer was... what we got on day one. And it's gotten so much better since! Can't wait to check out this update.
It's disheartening that this is doing so well even after Vicarious Visions have said they're not going to fix the jumping. I would buy it if they fixed it, but why would they bother at this point?
This doesn't seem like a big deal. If you can't carry over any of your XP or gear, your appearance is the only thing left. And if you want to change that, why not just make a new character?
I have a theory as to why they did this. It involves SPOILERS for those who didn't play through the story missions in the beta, so be warned: maybe your imported guardian is the one who dies at the beginning. END SPOILERS
The 4K consoles are basically specialty hardware. They're not going to change the game. Better to show consumers the games that the vast majority if them will actually be playing. Which usually look great, btw.
Graphics are noticeably improved on base PS4. Textures look much better. I envy those who haven't played the game since launch. The leap in presentation alone must be pretty dramatic.
The improved graphics and terrain and creature generation they introduced to this game were great additions. I liked base building too, but the crafting was a bit too grindy. Maybe if I'd started it before I'd already sunk 30 hours into the game, I could've gotten into it more. I'm still rooting for these guys.
@Gamer83 Thanks. The headline says it's the best DLC of 2016, so I thought he might've misread the headline. Rather than complaining about something outside of the story.
Anyway, I just grabbed this on sale. Looking forward to playing.
@Totaldude911 I didn't intend to call Sammy fascist. The campaign slogan he referenced is fascist, and not funny at all. I just can't take our present situation lightly.

Re: Sony Unsure if PS Plus Collection Will Expand with More Games
@evan23 I’ve heard the same about unlocked frame rates & it does seem that Xbox has better backward compatibility, but I think they’ve taken it a step further with Days Gone and optimized it to work with PS5. Same with Ghost of Tsushima, though I think it’s more striking in Days Gone. https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2020/11/days_gone_runs_at_60_frames-per-second_dynamic_4k_on_ps5
