Re: PS5 Firmware Update 20.02-02.30.00 Available to Download Now

I’ve recently had an issue where the HDR is very dim, with distorted colors (even when the console is connected directly to an HDMI 2.0 port with the included cable). Adjusting the HDR does nothing fix it. The only thing that has worked has been to unplug every other HDMI device from the tv, and reset the TV & PS5, upon which the PS5 has to be force restarted at least a couple of times, with the database rebuild & disk repair, various interminably flashing lights etc. Nothing unexpected for launch, but it’s a shame to have to disable HDR or go through this process just to play. So really hoping that’s fixed!

I was a senior in high school and working at Software Etc in the mall. A friend at another store had had a Japanese unit running since spring and I was so excited to get my own! I drove to our store first thing in the morning to get mine and weirdly spent a lot of time playing ESPN Xtreme games before going back to the store for my evening shift. What a great day!

Re: PS5 Games Could Cost $10 More Than PS4

@themcnoisy I hope so. Gamers seem pretty engaged around labor conditions and game studios and the problem of crunch. When adjusted for inflation, today’s $60 releases sell for half of what large-capacity cartridges went for in the 90s. I’m hopeful that there’s an opportunity there to create better conditions at games studios.

Our insistence on low prices for all kinds of products keeps wages down around the globe, and it’s been depressing to see game development staff be exploited. If this can be alleviated by paying what Chrono Trigger cost in the 90s, I’m all for it.

Despite the rough launches of the last couple of Just Cause games, I have a lot of affection for Avalanche as a developer. They’re so ambitious in their pursuit of chaos and destruction, and their games achieve a decent amount of visual polish, though it’s taken a few patches to get there lately. Mad Max, Renegade Ops and the Just Cause series are all pretty solid action games! And JC4 is finally performing ok on PS4, btw.

Anyway, I hope this is good!

Re: Destiny 2 Players Continue Large Scale Campaign Against Microtransactions

@solocapers My point is that games are much more affordable to the consumer than they have been in the past. And a game like Destiny continues to generate expenses after the disc has been sold, due to things like maintaining servers and a “live” team to continually update the game. If a few pieces of armor are paywalled to pay for that, it doesn’t really bother me. I do wish there were better incentives for playing the game though (aside from it just being fun). It hasn’t captured my attention nearly as much as D1, but maybe that’s a blessing in disguise. There are so many games to play!

@solocapers Ok, then: they’re not “just” cosmetic. However the only effects that they have are cosmetic. And Bungie probably wouldn’t have developed so many cosmetic options if they hadn’t planned to monetize them. AND there are still ways to dress up your character without spending money.

On top of that, games are more expensive to develop and yet cheaper than they’ve ever been. When Chrono Trigger came out in 1995 it cost $80. With inflation it would be almost $130 today.

Re: PlayStation VR Gun-'Em-Up StarBlood Arena Scores PS4 Demo

I was waiting for this! Multiplayer VR games like Star Trek & Werewolves Within are so cool, but dicey propositions when the install base is relatively small. And with no cross-platform play, I've been too nervous to spend money on StarBlood Arena. Hopefully this gets a lot of us into it!

I'll never cease to be amazed by people who had such specific and steadfast expectations for this game. I was very excited about it and read every preview I could find, and what I remember most are articles saying "what do you actually do in No Man's Sky?" And the answer was... what we got on day one. And it's gotten so much better since! Can't wait to check out this update.

Re: You Won't Be Able to Edit Your Imported Guardians in Destiny 2

Hoodie718

This doesn't seem like a big deal. If you can't carry over any of your XP or gear, your appearance is the only thing left. And if you want to change that, why not just make a new character?

I have a theory as to why they did this. It involves SPOILERS for those who didn't play through the story missions in the beta, so be warned: maybe your imported guardian is the one who dies at the beginning. END SPOILERS

The improved graphics and terrain and creature generation they introduced to this game were great additions. I liked base building too, but the crafting was a bit too grindy. Maybe if I'd started it before I'd already sunk 30 hours into the game, I could've gotten into it more. I'm still rooting for these guys.
