@CutchuSlow let’s be real we don’t need consoles anymore. They were once the place to play great first party games and the cheapest form of gaming. I think the ps6 and next Xbox will be the last generation.
Have any of these online petitions ever made companies or governments change their minds? Complete waste of time! Only way they listen is if they are hit in the wallet.
Sony will inevitably let retailers sell game codes but most won’t bother because Sony won’t give them decent wholesale prices. This move 100% makes games more expensive for the consumer. Anyone who doesn’t understand that is part of the problem.
Revenue figures are always going to be lopsided to the digital versions because Sony don’t have to sell at wholesale prices to retailers. The revenue figures are true, the actual split of people that buy that games (digital vs physical) is way way closer to 50/50
@AdamNovice the 85% stat that Sony are pushing is actually a massively inflated number because it takes all the indie games purchased via the online store into account. They completely ignore that those indie games people pay £5 for have no option of a disc version.
The true number for big aaa games is much likely to be about a 50/50 split between digital and physical.
People have the same idea as me. I have started to stockpile ps4 and 5 games from cex. Just purchased 7 ps4 games for £54. I’ll buy a huge library of old games and be done with Sony. I imagine second hand game stores are going to start putting prices up as stock runs low.
My YouTube timeline is absolutely full of videos either mocking Sony or just right outrage at them. The bbc news had an article about the situation.
@For-Kier People absolutely love to say this. But let’s be real internet hate does matter. It mattered for concord, marathon, Xbox one and many other examples I can’t be bothered to list. I’d actually argue that the Xbox one always online thing destroyed Xbox as a platform and they’ve never recovered. Only time will tell how this affects Sony. I would add though that the price of the ps6 will be the real thing that kills the console rather than the all digital thing.
Consoles were great for many years. The golden age is long gone. For me personally I’m at an age where I can afford to spend the money but I’d rather support a more user friendly platform so I’ll be off to pc and steam. I can honestly say Sony make zero system selling games for me anymore.
If we’re all going full digital will the game prices be reduced accordingly? We all know the answer. Time to bin Sony off and use a more user friendly store like steam.
Not sure many people will actually give a toss!
@Carnage We are many many years away from hardware prices coming down. When the industrial capacity does finally catch up these current prices will be the new norm.
I’m only one old man but after 20 plus years I’m giving up on Sony. I have zero compelling reason to stick with them. Their first party offerings don’t really do it for me anymore and I’d rather use steam to buy games. At least that storefront is user friendly and the games are cheaper.
@DennisReynolds the suits (large finance) took over the gaming industry about 15 years ago and have since ruined it. Same as the did with moves and music before. I’m 50 btw and I can assure you I’ve seen the best of movies, music, television and gaming. All now a shadow of their former selves.
Let the blood flow. Most studios and publishers deserve this. The actual people coding obviously don’t but the suits that ruined gaming are finally giving up and fcking off! Good riddance
I read somewhere that pre order numbers at something like 35 million copies already. Not sure how accurate that is tbh (seems very high for just console)
It makes complete business sense for Xbox to go back to exclusive gaming. That way they can downsize even more of their studios. Maybe they can replace those studios with more hostile takeovers.
I really don’t know why anyone would care about a ps6 yet. Diminishing returns of new consoles should mean much bigger gaps between generations. Especially considering how many devs still haven’t released a game this gen. I also expect people to think twice about buying new hardware all things considered.
If I remember correctly the next Xbox was expected to be high end console in the $1000 range and that was before ram prices even started to increase. It would likely be closer to $1500-2000 now
Buying bungie (live service royalty) and then gutting the studio is probably not going to help Sony reach their goals. Me in suits are not capable of building a game the masses want to play. It really is that simple.
What about the contractors? This figure is obviously the press release number rather than the actual true headcount. Hence the qualifying “full time” part of the statement
@Northern_munkey dislike it but it’s 100% true! They ignored destiny 2 for years all while building a niche game that has massively underperformed. They don’t have the runway or development teams left to build D3 and there is about 1% chance they can adapt marathon into a successful game.
Again people are correct to point out that the biggest games today are full of micro transactions for skins and such. The industry changed in this direction because the suits in charge spent a huge amount of money researching ways to monetise the industry in the most addictive, corrosive way possible. Just because these games are played by the younger masses doesn’t mean that aren’t horribly predatory systems that should be removed. It’s done massive long term damage to the industry.

Buy console if you want to overpay for games and then have to pay £30 a month to be able to play them online.
