@get2sammyb I’m curious as well. I know some DLC pack in codes in the US have expiration dates on them, and I’ve been burned by them before. Never heard of a code-inna-box game expiring before, though.

@Atreus97 The wording is relatively unambiguous on the website. It doesn’t differentiate between preorder or non-preorder that I can see, unless someone can point out what I’m missing.

Keys are generated and printed on a certain date which Sony know, but obviously Sony don't know when each key was sold, so on what planet would anyone assume it would be from point of sale?!?!

Who is going to buy the game and sit on the box for that amount of time? Why did you even buy it? Do people buy a loaf of bread, shove it in the cupboard for a month and then whine when they pull it out and its mouldy?

I'm sure the quantity manufactured will ensure that all are sold well before the expiry date, and consumers have statutory rights if unknowingly sold an expired game at a later date.

Apparently something related to the Payment Services Act in Japan though I have been unable to find the specific article in the act so far. Download codes are treated as a prepaid payment instrument in this context. Not a legal person myself so will defer to whoever can make sense of it.

Maybe, just maybe they know something about the end of times that we don’t, maybe we won’t need to worry about gaming after that point, we shall all have collectively witnessed the end of times!

Anyway, enough of any potential positives … this is odd and sort of sucks, but I’m sure there’s a legal obligation as stated they have to follow. Never heard of it myself, but I’ve never seen a pigeon carry a Nintendo Switch cartridge, doesn’t mean it can’t.

Imagine trying to redeem that code and being told it expired already.

It should be you paid for it ... 30 days or 30 years doesn't matter ... give me a guaranteed time frame that is set out before hand so the consumer know exactly what they are buying and force companies to stick to it or offer full refunds

@Deadhunter Unlikely doesn’t mean impossible. This is GTA, not Dragon Quest after all. Different countries do things differently. I’d imagine the retailers would HAVE to be reimbursed for then-worthless stock, but I can easily imagine someone buying a copy for someone’s birthday or another holiday and not knowing it would expire.

From my understanding, this appears to be a Japanese law, as such, why aren’t people stating their dismay for the Japanese government relating to this stupid law?

Because to recap, we have a lot of people in the comments who don’t reside in Japan, stating they are angry at Sony for abiding by the laws of Japan, but no one seems to be angry at the actual government that has formed and/or not amended the law.

Be angry at Sony for many things, being angry at Sony for doing what they legally need to do, and not being angry at the lawmakers is a whole different element.

There were codes on Nintendo Switch that had expiry dates too. Megaman comes to mind, thanks Capcom. A bit longer than this but still expiry.

It's a bit like how in Japan, for a Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade, they legally have to charge a minimum amount for it. It's weird.

@get2sammyb Here’s hoping, because it would be really silly to have someone in that country buy this as a gift, only to find that the code expired before the recipient’s birthday or something. DLC is…well, not fantastic for this to happen to, but sure better than the GAME ITSELF.

Sometime to me it feels like a series that began as satire has become worthy of satire, with all the micro transactions, absurd levels of hype and such. I kinda miss what it once was, particularly the 80s and then 90s pastiche of Vice City and San Andreas. Imagine GTA 6 having a C64 loader I'd reckon most people buying it, would have no clue of the reference. Equally, if this is just law over there, it's a complete non story.

At the same time, why on EARTH would you hold on to a code for over half a year!? You don't even need a console! Claim it on a PC browser or the app! It's the greatest loophole to keeping an eye on your account that avoids everything people are afraid of, such as the 3 YEAR inactivity account deletion.

And gifting someone a boxed code... like I should be asking people to make up their mind on if they're okay with the box at this point. I can agree that a code in a box is a bit silly, but if you're going accept it in this scenario, can I call you silly for getting box with a code early? Not a gift card or the voucher for the game the day before you were going to play/gift it?

Finally, I'd imagine this is for Xbox too. Might be a no brainer, and I see "any copies", but it's still VERY important to mention that here specifically as well. While the platform doesn't sell well over there, this is very likely to help a little bit given that it's only on 2 platforms. GTA5 is also extremely big over there with RP servers on the PC version, so they're definitely well versed to owning digital versions of this series. And while there's no online or PC version yet, the series is also too big for a lot of people to wait for it, even over there. Expect another 2 wave of sales when it does though... and probably another 2 next gen.

Lol they'll need to explain better, I just don't think the copies on store shelves are going to expire, makes no sense, if so then they really are going all out to kill physical whichever way possible. It's a losing battle man, physical fans, brace yourselves and accept the inevitable. It's sad but it is what it is.

Just redeem the code when you get the game, and you're all good? lol ? Most Japanese people are aware of this regulation and will ensure they let a giftee know about the expiry date, like with any other gift card you buy.

All codes have some form of expiry date; I guess Japanese regulation is different for pre-orders. A retailer won't sell you an out-of-date code.

R* and Japanese retailers will determine whether this rule needs to be extended in batches or is just a pre-order thing.

I will just be getting the digital code on the store and not worry about the empty plastic box on my shelf.

How do you tell the difference between a box bought at launch and a box bought a couple days before the expiry date?

Is each batch of code in box going to have a rolling Best Before Date that lasts 170 days before it self destructs? How do you know which one your going to get when you buy it if its sealed? Are they even going to create more copies or is it really just a single initial batch and thats why they can date them all in the first place?

Remember guys, no physical with only a code in the box was Rockstar's decision for GTA6. I believe this crap Rockstar move is what helped Sony fast-track into a all digital future. The best thing gamers can do is completely boycott GTA6 and hold off from pre-ordering and buying the game at launch. Hitting their bank account hard will swiftly reverse course.

Bigger picture....they can cancel your game at any time, disc or no disc. If they want Crash Bandicoot 4 unplayable, or any other game, they EASILY could. As soon as they have access to the inside of your console, your done. We need a hero to step in and release a no internet, moderately high tech modern console. In Japan, Nintendo or square enix just need a strong release somewhere around GTA 6's release date and it'll barely make the top 3 I believe. Would be very pleasing to see. Japan still has a descent gaming culture as the Switch will be the only viable console from here on out.

@datamonkey I understand what you're saying but I presume your games are sealed because the games you're going to play next have filled up your hard drive.

If you're buying a digital download code you dont need to install the game there and then. Rip it open, type in the code and it's redeemed for you to download whenever.

You could make a cardboard case with a disc cut 1/3 of the plastic making it PS1 size cases we don't even have booklets anymore anyway.
