GTA 6's Physical PS5 Download Codes Expire After Just 170 Days in Japan 1

Those planning to buy GTA 6’s physical edition in Japan – which consists of a code in the box if you recall – will have just 170 days to redeem their voucher, otherwise it’ll expire.

What’s particularly remarkable here is that the text on Rockstar’s website appears to imply the countdown begins with the title’s 19th November, 2026 release date – not the point of sale.

Here’s specifically what it says:

"Product codes in Japan will expire 170 days after the issuance date, which is the launch date (November 19, 2026) due to regional regulations."

That means any copies purchased after 8th May, 2027 will be ineligible. Rockstar’s blaming “regional regulations” on this, but it’s unclear specifically what they are.

It should be noted that this issue is, as far as I can see, restricted to Japan for now – there is no 170 day timeline in any other country.

Of course, Sony’s said that it’ll continue to support retailers once it ceases manufacturing discs in January 2028, likely with codes in a box. If this issue doesn’t get cleaned up, then it looks like that’s going to be a particularly poor experience for Japanese customers.
