It's honestly been hard to keep up with Ubisoft's behind-the-scenes plans for Far Cry, which have been reported on for years at this point. But it sounds as though the franchise is finally starting to move forward again.
According to a fresh article from Insider Gaming, which basically provides a full overview of the property's multiple projects, a new, "really ambitious" Far Cry game has just entered development, having completed its conceptualisation phase.
The interesting part is that this new open world title, currently codenamed Kodiak, is being produced alongside 'Blackbird' — the next mainline instalment in the series, which has been whispered about for ages.
And then there's 'Maverick'. If you've been keeping up, you may already know that Maverick caused a bit of stir amongst Far Cry fans, as it was widely reported to be some kind of multiplayer extraction shooter.
Well, Maverick has apparently been cancelled, with the aforementioned Kodiak being "built on its foundations".
This obviously raises questions about Kodiak itself, but right now, we don't have much information. It's said that the project is all about "player interactions" and "player-driven stories" — but that doesn't exactly tell us a whole lot.
In any case, it sounds like Blackbird — essentially Far Cry 7 — is the game that we'll be seeing next. Meanwhile, Kodiak is supposed to be "several years" away from release.
Following on from Ubisoft's massive restructuring efforts, it seems as though Far Cry is finally getting back on track — at least to some extent. Here's hoping that the franchise makes a strong return in the relatively near future.
