Best thing that can happen to Ubisoft is a tencent takeover. Get rid of the French brothers and start again. I think that’s why so many people wanted assassin’s creed to flop.

The biggest gripe I have is the insanely high review scores western games get in some publications. Same publications give games like black myth a 6. Then we wonder why no one trusts gaming media anymore.

Dev says “if you don’t like it, don’t buy it!”
Player says okay!
Studio closes 12 months later.
Having a combative relationship with your target audience is suicidal.
Unfortunately Naughty dog will get the exact same treatment with their next game

A certain Eric Cartman phrase comes to mind when thinking about western gaming devs. When you somehow manage to alienate a large chunk of your audience before a game even releases you are doing things wrong. No one wants culture wars in video games! That’s what we do to escape the culture wars. Eventually things will get better though.

@SMJ PlayStation is selling well because Xbox is effectively dead. Overall console sales are diminishing and pc sales are increasing.

Long term pc gaming will take larger market share. Especially as more dedicated plug and play gaming pc’s come on the market.

Steam has changed the game and is so consumer friendly. It makes Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft look terrible

Funny enough I bought shadow of Mordor from cex recently £4. This is the exact reason I don’t want a fully download only system. You get absolutely ripped off by online stores as they don’t have true supply and demand economics.

Why would anyone buy and Xbox pc instead of just buying a pc? I know it will likely be cheaper but it also won’t be top end. I’m on the verge of giving up console gaming for pc. I really don’t see the value in a £700+ console tbh. Especially if everything will eventually go multi platform.

The staggering success of this game for some reason hasn’t translated to twitch viewership (currently 15th) or steam players (currently 39th) I feel the subscription services have skewed the numbers massively.

We’ve also had data releases like “2m players” instead of sales.
Steams biggest ac release so far but steam has grown 4x since last game released.

Truth is we won’t know how well or badly the game has sold until they release quarterly financial results.

@Vaako007 you’d have to assume a break even number would be about 5m copies sold at full price. As you say player numbers could easily be people taking advantage to a one month sign up with ubi+

The game doing well compared to previous games on released on steam is a little misleading due to the fact that steam has quadrupled in player count since the last ac release.

At some point in the future games companies are going to realise that these subscription services actually hurt their sales figures rather then help. Giving away a $300-400 game for $10 monthly sign up is a recipe for disaster.

Number one on the storefront, best seller with physical sales. Sounds like it will be a huge success. Pleased for the devs tbh. Surprised the stock price hasn’t picked up a little though.

One of the best single player games ever made! The chalice dungeons are almost endless with some amazing bosses. Getting the platinum for this one was fun and the dlc is probably the best dlc ever released on any game.

I think I’ll pick this up but only when it’s on sale in a year or so.

No one wants Ubisoft to go bankrupt! Most of us want the ownership and management to restructure. Single player battlepass and 3 different in game currencies is disgusting. Paying to unlock the map, not being able to get the best armour and gear without a huge grind or swipe the credit card for instant access. Pay to win bundles that completely break the game.

None of this was covered in any of the professional reviews!

I don’t believe for one second that this game is out selling wilds. We’ll see soon enough though.

I wonder if they’ll sell the pssr update in one of the in game stores.

It’s makes sense to wait to buy this game. It will be 30% off in a couple of months and patches will improve it.

@wiiware that’s exactly why Microsoft want to buy it! Steam is far too user friendly for this industry and the big players hate it. They want to tell you what’s good and successful! They hate they they can’t control the narrative.

Notice how there isn’t a link in this article to any official Ubisoft announcement or news regarding the 1m players? That’s strange I’d like to see this announcement. I can’t see to find it anywhere other than gaming websites.

@Floki people use steam numbers because they are the only real data we get from this industry. They use language like games shipped and active users to disguise low numbers they don’t want published. It’s the exact reason the industry tried to have steam numbers removed from the platform the media releasing this good news puff piece is likely an attempt at countering the negativity that’s currently online in places like Twitter and YouTube. The picture will be a lot clearer in a months time.

A more news worthy article would probably be the Japanese Parliament discussing the game and absolutely slamming the decisions made by Ubisoft. But that article would be negative so we won’t see that on most msm platforms

Lots of people have a real issue with Yasuke romancing a historical figure who is know for her loyalty to her husband and children.

@MrPeanutbutterz I think that was my main dislike of the game. It was really really heavy and draining to play. So much so I found it depressing and not enjoyable.

He’s 100 percent right! Publishers forcing devs to make games to follow a trend that will be over by the time the game releases is moronic. The suits in charge would have us play the same 20 games for 15 years if they had the option. They don’t care about innovation and they probably don’t really care about the industry. As long as they have 20k concurrent players filling the coffers every season they’ll be happy.

Funny because I hear way more horror stories about live service than I do about single player games. The real reason the industry wants live service is because it’s easier and cheaper to make one game for 15-20 years. Gaming will die for many many people when and if ot goes full live service.

@BiosNova I haven’t said a single word about assassins creed! I couldn’t care less about this game tbh. My comments are of my concern regarding the total control publishers want over gaming media and discourse. I obviously think people making threats need to be punished! My concern is that this is more about shutting down any negative sentiment towards a game.

You only need to look at my two comments being removed for absolutely zero reason whatsoever to prove my point. I’ve been here for 13 years and only recently have I started to see people’s comments removed. That points to games media trying to completely control the narrative. Without these controls being enforced I almost guarantee places like push square wouldn’t get review keys.

Must silence dissenters! Shutting down fan criticism is a terrible idea. It’s also the main reason publishers want active player counts removed from steam. They want to control the narrative about how good their game is not the the players. Hence the reason they will only give review codes to people that give favourable reviews scores.

Executives are always shocked when fans scores are lower than gaming media review scores. These same executives only give review keys to media that give them favourable reviews.

@SintasSays yes the sales are good but why aren’t old games on permanent sale? How many people are realistically going to be buying them at £40?! The competition authorities need to take digital store fronts to court. I should be able to buy games from other competitors not just PlayStation.

They have been talking about disc rot regarding 90’s cd’s for decades. I’m still to find a single person who’s music cd’s have rotted.

When we go full download only we’ll get ripped off. Supply and demand on old physical games mean the price becomes very very low. This supply and demand pricing completely vanishes when you have a monopoly. PlayStation still try and charge you £40-£50 for games a decade old.

Games companies in the future won’t use an actors real voice to create games. They’ll create computer generated voices so they don’t need to pay anyone anything.

Established franchises will pay to use a current actors voice until they move on to another character model (like a series reboot) but long term voice actors are finished in this industry

System seller is a stretch! This game was a disaster and didn’t sell well never mind systems.

£399 isn’t a big enough price drop. Not for an accessory that gets very little support.

I’ll definitely be buying it but so far I’m not excited for it.

I would suggest that the quicker these movie companies get removed from gaming the better. Truth is gamers will always follow the good games and abandon the hollowed out soulless studios.

This isn’t the movie business where western audiences mostly only watch western movies. Gaming is much more adaptable! The East is currently taking over and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

I know that if I bought one I would use it 2-3 times and then it would go into storage. Seems like a very anti social way of gaming if you live with family.

Funny enough I was just looking at buying shadow of Mordor but it’s currently priced at £39.99 for an 11 year old game. Just placed an order with Argos from £12.

If AI means we get production cycles back down into the 3-5 years timeframe instead of the 7-10 year I’m good with it.

@Rich33 I imagine these type of systems will be implemented in the future. I just hope that after the release date these checks are removed so you won’t get locked out when your internet is down.

@Rich33 i would imagine anyone with an early copy would have switch off their internet connection.

Ubisoft know footage will be available online and they also know it will damage sales. A day one patch will definitely help with some issues. Unfortunately for them the damage will already be done though.
