Lara Croft's Newest PS5 Game Tomb Raider Catalyst Delayed to 2028

Yes I suspect, as you indicate Liam, that means we're not getting a disc version. What a frustratingly silly unintended consequence. I can't help but feel like there was a better way for Playstation to do this cut-off date, like replacing it with an application/submission deadline instead.

They were only announced recently weren’t they? Why can these useless devs never learn to keep their mouths shut until the games near completion. I have zero interest in hearing about games that a years away

Ah, it's fine. Legacy of Atlantis isn't even out yet. Focus on making it great. The presumable lack of disc is revolting though.

I expected this to happen because Legacy of Atlantis was delayed to 2027 (Both games releasing in 2027 sounded very unlikely). Sadly this means Tomb Raider is the first victim of Sony's decision to kill off physical media in January 2028.

@Boxmonkey When to announce things (and release dates) are almost always the publishers decision. It is not uncommon for games that get delayed for the developer to hear the initial release date (the one that gets delayed) announced and think "why did the publisher say that, there's no way in hell this game is going to be ready by then!"

Kind of crazy that Catalyst is supposed to be a sequel to Tomb Raider Underworld, but that game is not even playable on PS4, let alone PS5.

I'm fine with this. I have a massive backlog of purchased and wishlisted games over the PS3-PS5 gens already. We'll see where we are in 2028.

We gonna see this headline all the way up to 2028.

No disc. No buy. I'll get it on discount in a sale from GoG DRM free a little while later.

It’s b/c of games like this, and maybe even Intergalactic, that I think Sony should, and will, fall back off of their hard and completely unnecessary hard cutoff date of 1/1/28 for no more PS5 discs. Not saying there won’t be a real hard throttling but I feel like there will be “exceptions”.

A shame but always better to delay and make a better game.

Announcements like this remind me that I need to play the survivor trilogy. I have the first one on PS3, and I remember it being really, really good. I can't remember why I stopped playing it. Is the PS4 version a significant enough jump to justify getting it, or is the PS3 good to go?

It's been delayed because they can't be arsed to make a disk for it.

I’ll pick this up on a different system than Sony’s as they’ve decided they don’t want my money.

That's a shame but at least there's a Tomb Raider game next February while I wait for this one.

@IntrepidWombat PS4 version definitely looks better, and can probably find it pretty cheap somewhere. But if you just have the PS3 version already with ya, I’d say you are just fine with that.

I reckon most of us expected this. Still stoked to play both of them, just a bit more of a wait and there are plenty of other games on the pile to be getting to.

I figured it would be delayed since the TR1 remake got delayed to next year. Best to take the time to make it great. I can wait.

@Boxmonkey allow me to educate you my dear fellow. When games are first shown off, it is not for the benefit of us, the gamers. It is for the benefit for the stock market. The idea being that the unveiling of a game that’s expected to be popular will cause the company’s stock to rise.

Same thing goes for release dates. They’re not given out for the benefit of us, the players. They are given out for the benefit for the stick market. “This is when you can expect to get rich” is the actual announcement.

@Fake-news Legacy of Atlantis is coming out for Switch 2. Fingers crossed this one also does, and it has a proper physical release.

This doesn’t bother me because any game announced I go in figuring it’ll be delayed at least a year. So this is still on schedule for me.

Normally I wouldn’t care and say this is not an issue because despite all the awful and sh¡++I things happening on the game industry, at least lack of good games is never and issue, just the rest of this year is stacked with interesting upcoming games, and next year is probably going to be similar, just look at February.

But the issue here is that a certain moronic company is ending production of new physical games starting 2028 instead of waiting a couple of years to at least let their current console continue releasing physical games until it becomes irrelevant.

@ShadowRJ not only that but it's a good way to show shareholders popular metrics. 'we hit x number of views on the trailer' or we have ' x number of wishlists'

It also makes multimedia negotiations more favorable for the publisher.

At the same time, if they're looking to staff up, it's a great way to get talent 'hey we're working on x popular IP why not join us'

As others have said, these moronic announcements of vapourware are made to please investors and pump up share prices.

I'd hope investors hadn't gotten wise such that the practise would stop, but that's too optimistic.

I'd hope the media could develop a code of practise where they refuse to publish stories on vapourware, and only cover game announcements six months from launch.

Alas clicks = cash, and so this hyping of fumes will continue.
