Sony has published its latest financial results, meaning we have new sales data for PlayStation based on the last quarter.

As of 30th June 2026, PS5 has now reached lifetime sales of 95.3 million; the console sold 1.6 million units last quarter (Q1 of financial year 2026), which is a drop of about 36% versus the same period in 2025.

Revenue from hardware sales is also down year-on-year, but only by around 9.8%, which is perhaps a reflection of the higher price tag on PS5.

Obviously, sales of any console are expected to slow down over time, but unit prices historically go down to try and keep a machine's momentum going as long as possible. PS5 is the first of Sony's consoles to become more expensive over time.

Despite the price hike, PS5 unit sales are actually slightly higher than they were in the previous quarter; 1.6 million versus 1.5 million.

It's difficult to really weigh up the impact, then, but we can at least broadly say the PS5 has definitely lost some steam as it navigates its sixth year on the market.

As for software, unit sales are slightly up year-on-year (66.1 million versus 65.9 million). Digital sales accounted for 82% of software units sold in the quarter.

In terms of monthly active users, Sony records 125 million for the quarter, up by two million year-on-year.

Revenue for Sony's game and network services sector as a whole is "essentially flat", as the company puts it, while profits are up 37% year-on-year, mostly due to US tariff refunds.
