Obsidian Is Officially Making a New Fallout Game

Rob brought it up before but this ain't the same team who did New Vegas... but I shall remain optimistic that they can do a great job!

It's nice that Asha gave Bethesda a good kick up the backside to get things moving. Excited to see the remasters (which should have been out in conjunction with the TV series, really!) And this game by Obsidian

@Oram77 In that no team is the same as it was 16 years ago you are correct. However, do keep in mind that most of the senior people who worked on New Vegas are still at Obsidian, including the director Josh Sawyer and the lead writer John Gonzales. Obsidian is actually one of the teams that has changed least (at least at the senior designer level) over the last 20 years- most of the people who made KOTOR 2 are still there.

But there have been additions at Obsidian this with such as Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarski (who were the creators of Fallout)

I would have been excited at this news, but as with most of the developers now, they just aren't the same as the ones creating beloved games of the past. Doesn't matter if some of the same people are still there - the changes are apparent.

Despite this, I imagine they'll do a decent job. Hearing this years ago would've been amazing.

And the announcement that it will be console exclusive to Xbox coming before long I'm sure.

On the one hand obsidian made the best fallout game of all time. On the other hand obsidian’s last game was avowed. I’d suggest that the talent that made fallout have long departed the building.

These days I look forward to games made by the new dev teams like Larian, warhorse and sandfall. They will be the future big players because they haven’t been infected by suits yet. Same as fromsoft before them. Look for the teams making bangers now not the ones living of decades old past glory.

@DaveScoffin sure hope not 😕 but all these news are packed, this, fallout 3 and new vegas remaster and fallout 5 on the horizon, great for fallout fans for sure 😊

Colour me vaguely interested in Fallout again at this news.

@DaveScoffin With a big multiplatform IP attached to it I doubt it. They have learnt their lesson and any big games won't be exclusive anymore or at most maybe timed.

Bittersweet news. As much as New Vegas still shines as one of the best (if least stable) games in the modern franchise, I can't imagine that Obsidian are all too thrilled that a project from their own IP was axed to bring them back to Fallout.

I saw no mention of platforms will this come out on ps5?

@Oram77 one more thing, neither Josh Sawyer nor John Gonzalez were involved with the outer worlds games or Avowed. John Gonzalez returned like last year while Josh Sawyer was kinda like an advisor and never heavily involved, his last game as the lead was Pentiment and before that it was the Pillars of Eternity games.

I was also quite pessimistic but the more I looked into it, perhaps there are more reasons to be optimistic than I thought.

They said it's a new Fallout project. No word on what kind of project it is. If it wasn't strictly a game studio they were partnering with, I'd be warning to be prepared for a new Fallout comic or something.

But...mobile game? Live service? SP? MP? No hints yet.

@RobN it's gonna be a single player rpg. MS and Bethesda have made plenty of stupid decisions but even they are not dumb enough to not realise what kind of game this should be.

Nice but I imagine it's a few years away so I'll save my hype. I do hope it'll be a SP game though along the lines of the classics.

Fallout Monopoly Edition is probably what the current Obsidian staff is best capable of.

The lesser oversight from Bethesda, the better.

It's wild Obsidian was hit by layoffs considering they've delivered game after game to boost Game Pass per the mandate. The only studio to pump out those volumes, with Id being second I guess.

Bethesda really should have been working on both Fallout and Elder Scrolls and they should've been moving at a clip - I understand games take a long time to make but it's a bit of a joke. Obsidian should've been given the Fallout reinstalled by Microsoft a long time ago whether Bethesda wanted it or not.

I genuinely think Asha Sharma is doing a pretty good job in turning around XB. Absolutely she’s needed to make some rough decisions (layoffs etc) - but ultimately the job she’s been tasked to do is reinvigorate the XB brand, make it ‘matter’ again, focus in on the key franchises and IPs + double-down on exclusives to keep the hardware sales alive

I always found it incredible that Fallout wasn’t given some kind of life injection after the success of the 1st TV season…. And I’m delighted to see that the IP is having some energy breathed into it

@LikelySatan this is so true. Every dialogue option virtually leads to the exact same outcome. You don’t have the option of an evil playtrough. I enjoyed the game for the atmosphere but missions were all boring and the three factions didn’t make a huge difference to 90% of the game. Huge devs just don’t really make true RPG’s anymore

I'm really excited for this new fallout like I am for elderscrolls but I foresee these games being made exclusive to xbox, I really hope I'm wrong though.

@RobN fallout always had some elements of live service with dlc , expansions and updates, but i mean they already have that in fallout 76, and it sounds like they want to make more of these games kind of like how capcom has serveral teams for resident evil , ubisoft has several teams for assassins creed , they want the same for fallout, instead of waiting 5-8 years for a new game.

Since BGS is keeping Fallout 5 for themselves. Obsidian should go crazy and make a game in the style of the og Fallouts, the game director did both Pillars of Eternity games so they know what it takes to make an isometric RPG. Cash in on the Baldur's Gate 3 mania (years late) and the Fallout show crazy (years late).

Given the speed at which MS likely wants this game, I expect it be more like a reskin of Outer Worlds 2.

My expectation as well. Asha seems very determined to shift away from the multi-platform experiment just as Sony is backing away from PC. There will be a lot of screaming about how the titles will sell less because of it, but truth is PC/Steam growth is greatly outpacing consoles and removing a single console is not likely going to have a significant impact because any new single player game will still sell through Xbox PC store with play anywhere and via Steam.

It’s been so long now, that the thought of playing a Fallout or Elder Scrolls game kinda makes me go bleh.

Definitely more excited for newer and less seen ips.

Naughty Dog who made Uncharted and first TLOU isn't the same as Naughty Dog today. I remember reading in Schreier's book that after Uncharted 4 14 out of 20 level designers left ND.

Blizzard today certainly isn't same as Blizzard in past.

In terms of Obsidian and Fallout, Josh Sawyer, who was director of FNV is still there and is leading project. John Gonzalez who was lead writer of FNV is also still there. So I would say that this is pretty solid core to build around.
