I must have missed (or forgotten) this new information. I also seem to have confused 'having internet access' with Plus-membership.
Anyway, thanks for bringing it to my attention, I just had it fixed in my mind that when my Plus membership ran out that I could not play the Campaign anymore.
It seems similar to the first game, but that's not a bad thing in my mind. Being able to continue building on your kingdom is a great addition. There's some new biomes and settings, including a Japanese Shogun-inspired one. I haven't picked it up myself yet, but it's on my wish-list.
They have released a lot of free content in a relatively short time, especially if compared to all other racing games being released in recent years. They probably had all of these in their "bank" already, at launch, and was planning to release them anyway. Still, it is positive how they quickly realized they made a mistake (by making an online multiplayer-focused game) and have tried to compensate older, single-player, fans for it.
However, I don't have Plus membership anymore, so there's little point in playing the game since I can't access the "career mode" or even save my game.
With both the Playstation's January sale and Steam's Winter sale I got some new stuff to play: the Italy expansion for Euro Truck 2, Oregon and New Mexico for American Truck, Horizons for Elite Dangerous, and Jurassic World Evolution for the PS4.
It's mainly the Indie games that have my interest right now; Fear Effect Sedna, Serial Cleaner, Atomine, Van Helsing, Victor Vran, Stick it to the Man, 88 Heroes, 20XX, and a few others.
Tempted to re-buy Assetto Corsa digitally for my PS4, this price is a fantastic deal for the complete version with all the DLCs.
I'm very curios about 'The Grand Tour Game'. It will use the rFactor 2 physics engine, which is the best sim-racing engine there is in my opinion. It's been the base engine for all of my favourite racing games: Race 07, Stock Car Extreme, RaceRoom, Automobilista and others.
The episodic business model is odd for a racing game, but it has worked for other games and genres, so I'm cautiously optimistic about that.
Vane is the one I will most likely buy though, maybe 'Tales of Vesperia' later on.
I'm excited for it, I just hope it will have more content than the first game, at least some DLCs. I'm eyeing that Alpine Renault for sure.
I think the muted response to Dirt Rally 2 is good evidence of just how hyped-up the first game was. Hopefully the "git gud" fanboys have moved unto to Fortnite or something.
Somewhat annoyingly this game is not sold on Sony's online store in my country, as well as countries like Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, Netherlands and others.
It's because of Sony's online store restrictions, which took the developer completely by surprise (being PC game developers). So I'll have to order it on disc if I want to play the game this year, not a significant issue since I prefer a disc, but still ...
Anyway, this and Stranded Deep are two PC games I'm eagerly waiting for on the PS4. I have a decent PC but don't think these games would run well enough on it, so PS4 it is.
Good to hear that the technical quality is decent enough on the standard PS4. They also seem quick with the console patches, from what I've read elsewhere, so that's good.
Far too many PS4 gamers expect smaller studios to deliver the same production quality as a AAA-studio like Codemasters, there's little wonder you people can't find enough racing games to play.
@Nerdfather1 It's easily one of the most fun shooters I've played, the mechanics are so fun to play around with. It's one of those games people either seem to love ... or hate (for some weird reason I can't understand).
@wiiware I hope to use the Epic store eventually, when their selection of games is more to my liking. It's always nice to find alternatives to Steam, and I refuse to use GOG (too right-wing).
@b1ackjack How is Mutant Year Zero? I'm very tempted to buy it, since I do like my isometric tactical games. Plus it looks fun-tastically odd. Are you playing it on the PS4, i.e. how are the controls?
RaceRoomRacingExperience on PC, continuing with a custom GT3 championship.
Some Euro- & American Truck Simulator, it's a nice thing to relax with on a Sunday especially. Re-installed Elite Dangerous on PC, so might give that a spin too. It's been well over a year since I last played it, so it will be interesting to see how they have improved on it.
On the PS4 it will be V-Rally 4 and some new Ni no Kuni 2 stuff.
@Jaz007 I've also complained about this inconsistency before, it's why I more or less stopped reading their reviews, ... apart from Rebecca's (I dig her taste).
I wouldn't mind buying one of those fancy controllers for myself, but I'd rather spend my money on games, ... my backlog won't grow by itself after all.
This weekend I will mainly be playing on PC, which I haven't done in quite a while. I recently connected my PC to my big TV, and the result is awesome. So I'm all set on playing my favourite PC games; Race Room Racing Experience, Automobilista, and rFactor 2. I'll also be spending some time figuring out which of my other PC games I can play with a controller. Most of my PC game collection consists of strategy games and point-and-clicks.
On the PS4 I'll probably play some X-Morph Defense and Ride 3.
Don't agree with any of the winners, as predicted. It's rather boring to see such a narrow selection of games, it shows a simplistic and uniform taste in games.
Doesn't look interesting so far, a rather generic first-person RPG. If it does something more unique, like allowing you to play as an alien, I might be interested. Right now it just looks like Fallout with a new coating.
Playing the Council which I recently picked up. This game is awesome; the gameplay is unique, the voiceacting is great, the music is superb. It's a fascinating and highly well-made game. Starting a second playthrough of Call of Cthulhu, I went straight for the dark ending in my first one, and want explore the other pathways.
I'm much more interested in buying an original PS1, and all the games I actually want to play. This mini-console is a cool novelty gadget to have, but it doesn't have much practical use for me, especially when it comes to the game selection.
Cthulhu and Uncharted are the only ones that interest me, and I already have those. I've played Dying Light already on another platform, and I'm not that keen to re-buy it yet. I enjoyed the gameplay mechanics but think it tries too much to have a dramatic or emotive story.
The PS Plus sale is more impressive, I bought 'the Council' package. There's also some interesting Indie games on sale, in yet another sale.
I'm also playing some Everybody's Golf, as well as Dakar 2018, Valkyria Chronicles and MotoGP 18. I've ordered Valkyria Chronicles 4 on disc and decided to replay the original first.
Technical issues aside, Bethesda probably sees this as a long-term project, something to expand on. So far some the people who really like the Fallout game-world seem to think it's OK (technical issues aside), at least on PC, which seems to have gotten the better end of the deal compared to consoles. It is a mistake though, for Bethesda to release a game in this state, charging full-price for it. It's something I would expect to see in a Steam early access game.
@Ralizah How is Valkyria 4 compared to the original so to speak? Is it just as difficult? I rage-quit that thing so many times I'm not sure I actually finished it, ... I just like to think that I did (selective memory lol). Also, is the mission re-starts faster in this game? That was one of my major annoyances with the 2008 game.
Nascar Heat 3, I started up my own team last time around, and will continue to build on that. The management system is pretty cool. I'm super-happy if I reach Top 10 in any given race though, it's a tough game.
11-11 Memories Retold. I will continue on with the story. The game is so immersive to me (with the music, the voice-acting and so on) it's hard to put it down.
Don't agree with any of the winners apart from Bryan Dechart.
Fortnite winning game of the year though ... shows you that multiplayer is valued much more with the gaming media than single-player gaming.
A multiplayer game winning Game of the Year is - to me - like a slot-machine winning the Nobel Prize in Literature. It's a joke.
I can understand a truly unique multiplayer game being nominated for Game of the Year, like Rocket League which offered something new and original, but Fortnite does the exact same thing 10+ other games do; it just happened to become more trendy by chance.
Yeah... the European sale is not that big or impressive. Some good deals on games I already have, like Detroit and F1 2018. I'll might pick up Vampyr though, I'm in the mood for some more choice-based games after finishing Call of Cthulhu.
E3 is still covering multi-platform games, which represents 70% of the games I buy. So 'yes', it is still worthwhile if you want to see some gameplay, regardless of platform.
I can see Sony having its own events, pushing the exclusives even more than before. With PC gaming dominating the media, professional or otherwise, I think it's better for Sony to do its own thing. Otherwise I feel they just get overshadowed by everything PC, PC, and more PC, ... as far as journalistic coverage goes.
In fact, I feel it would be better if all console systems focused more on having separate events. Console gaming does not get as much coverage in the media as PC gaming, especially with big events like E3.
These days the first wave of reviews are always done by people who rate things 1/10 or 10/10. People who have already made up their minds long before they have actually played a game. It's a common thing today. So I take this news with a fair grain of salt.
I'm playing through the game myself right now. It's one of the most interesting games to come out on in recent years. If you like a really good story and narrative it's worth getting.
It's also more of a game than I expected, in terms of gameplay elements I mean. I thought it would be closer to a "narrative-game", in style of Virginia or Edith Finch. I really like those kind of games, so I don't mean that in a negative way.
The art-style works really well in most of the game; it's pretty, warm and feels rather nostalgic (which fits the game's timeline). However, the trench environments - with their brown and grey muddiness - does not work in the game's visual favour at times.
Games like this, that have a unique visual style, are truly timeless; they don't fade out of fashion like triple-a games and other photorealistic games do. In 7 years' time God of War will look archaic, but this game will still look new and unique.
None of my favourites ever win in these contests, and this year will be no different: Ni no Kuni 2, Lost Sphear, Yakuza 6, Dragon Quest XI, Valkyria Chronicles 4, Forgotton Anne ...
Between the actual contenders in for a shot to win I hope Red Dead 2 wins. I did not enjoy God of War and haven't played Spider-Man yet.
The first game was very unique - and quite creepy - when it came out. It became too much of the same thing with the sequels I think. Still, it's pretty cool to get these unique style of games on consoles as well, I'm sure they will find an audience. It's not for me though, far too stressful.
Many if not most developers use the same [base] engine for many years, like Codemasters, Rockstar and Ubisoft for example. So it's nothing unique for Bethesda to be doing this, although they do seem to hang on to the same engine for much longer.
The issue for me, is that Bethesda always gets a pass by the media, on issues that are seen as game-breaking in other franchises and games, like Assassin's Creed for instance. The Bethesda games have usually been OK to me, never 'great' or 'very good' ... just 'OK', apart for a game-breaking bug in Skyrim on the PS3, which literally prevented me from finishing the game.
@Old-Mrs-Cloggins Thanks! Yeah, AO Tennis is definitely the closest we have to Top Spin. So do check it out.
Tennis games have a been a regular staple for me on consoles for a long time, so it's odd to have gone this long without one. None of the old (and big) publishers are willing to take up the sport again it seems, so it's left to smaller studios and developers to have a go at it.
@Octane Well, they have plenty of catching-up to do, in regards to both Sony and Steam. They need to make it worthwhile for PC gamers to start using the Microsoft store much more, and attract more people to Xbox. To me it shows that Microsoft are serious about their mission. The PS5 is not that far off in their minds, and they need to prepare, to counter that.
@crimsontadpoles I hope so, Sony has been pushing hard in recent years, and this will force them to not slack off. Steam needs a proper competitor as well. I know some people don't want to hear this, but I want to see XBox doing really well again, otherwise it will just be Playstation and Steam (and Nintendo), and that's a rather barren gaming world to me.
Microsoft is expanding both their PC market and their console market. As predicted, many Steam and [most] GOG gamers are not happy about this news, not just [some] of us PS4 gamers. PC gamers prefer to have everything on Steam or GOG, so the real winners here are Xbox gamers.
For me, it makes no difference. I have little interest in PC games like inXelie's stuff. And how likely are we to get a new KOTOR game, especially one that is as good as KOTOR 1 & 2?
I don't feel any resentment towards Microsoft for this move, both Sony and Steam have their own collection of exclusive developers, especially Steam.
Bought Tennis World Tour and AO International Tennis from a current sale. Tennis World Tour has noticeable framerate stutters on the regular PS4. It is a janky game, not as smooth as it needs to be. Apart from this major issue I quite like the game, the content I mean. It's just a shame it doesn't run smoothly. I would rate the game 2.5/5 as it is now, and cannot recommend it to anyone for the regular PS4.
AO International Tennis, in comparison, is a much better game. In fact I would say it is a very good tennis game. It has been patched a great deal and I don't notice any framerate issues at all on the regular PS4, it runs and plays smoothly. It also offers a more immersive tennis "experience". So far the game is a solid 4/5 for me. So if you're thinking of buying one of these, it's definitely AO Tennis you should get.
I also just started with 11-11 memories retold, a pretty Adventure game set in WWI. Can't say that much about it, I'm liking it so far, it's charming and engaging, love the voice-acting, visual style and music.
I liked the single-player content both games had. They should re-vamp the game(s) into a single-player story-driven game. Alternatively, add more single-player story content to the existing version. They have a cool concept for a storyline, with lots of depth to explore, but it's not being utilized enough. For me the multiplayer stuff have a short-lived appeal, as there's not enough variation and is rather boring ( I don't want to spend hours on a single "dungeon"). To me PvP is always terrible, regardless of game, it's never fun.
It's annoying to me because I can see an awesome single-player game in Destiny 1 & 2, but they wanted the 'big bucks', so multiplayer it is.
It's the only type of DLC I'm happy to buy, so an emphatic 'yes' from me. I'm not picky either, as longs as it is story-based I don't really care about price, time of release and so on. I prefer a continuation or side-story stuff, but an off-shoot can be really good as well.
I think your enthusiasm for this game will be short-lived, pardon my cynicism.
I don't think you're going to enjoy any arcade game that gets released, that is not a big-budget AAA game.
Only developers and publishers with mid/low-level budgets are interested in making arcade racing games, more or less, and these never get rated well, because the media folk and "mainstream gamers" keep expecting the same graphical quality as a big-budget AAA game.

@Ps4_all_the_way + @SoulChimera
They've changed that? When the game came out you could not access the Career mode or save your game when offline. (Pushsquare's article on it: https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2017/10/guide_can_you_play_gran_turismo_sport_offline).

Tennis games have a been a regular staple for me on consoles for a long time, so it's odd to have gone this long without one. None of the old (and big) publishers are willing to take up the sport again it seems, so it's left to smaller studios and developers to have a go at it.
Re: Obsidian, InXile Will No Longer Make PlayStation Games
@Octane Well, they have plenty of catching-up to do, in regards to both Sony and Steam. They need to make it worthwhile for PC gamers to start using the Microsoft store much more, and attract more people to Xbox. To me it shows that Microsoft are serious about their mission. The PS5 is not that far off in their minds, and they need to prepare, to counter that.
Re: Obsidian, InXile Will No Longer Make PlayStation Games
@crimsontadpoles I hope so, Sony has been pushing hard in recent years, and this will force them to not slack off. Steam needs a proper competitor as well. I know some people don't want to hear this, but I want to see XBox doing really well again, otherwise it will just be Playstation and Steam (and Nintendo), and that's a rather barren gaming world to me.
Re: Obsidian, InXile Will No Longer Make PlayStation Games
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 245
Re: Activision Pondering Faster Content, New Monetisation for Destiny 2 After Forsaken Sales Fail to Meet Expectations
Re: Fallout 76's Gigantic Day One Patch Is Bigger Than the 45GB Game
My brother was interested in the game until he found out there were no NPCs at all, just other players.
I still think the game will find its core audience, in the same way Destiny and Elder Scrolls Online has.
Re: Poll: Do You Buy and Play Single Player Story DLC?
It's the only type of DLC I'm happy to buy, so an emphatic 'yes' from me. I'm not picky either, as longs as it is story-based I don't really care about price, time of release and so on. I prefer a continuation or side-story stuff, but an off-shoot can be really good as well.
Re: Road Redemption Looks Like Madcap Motorbiking Fun in PS4 Launch Trailer
I think your enthusiasm for this game will be short-lived, pardon my cynicism.
I don't think you're going to enjoy any arcade game that gets released, that is not a big-budget AAA game.
Only developers and publishers with mid/low-level budgets are interested in making arcade racing games, more or less, and these never get rated well, because the media folk and "mainstream gamers" keep expecting the same graphical quality as a big-budget AAA game.
