After winning a slew of awards in a row, it had felt like Red Dead Redemption 2 was going to clean up at The Game Awards 2018 – but God of War swept in to take the top gong from under Rockstar’s nose. Sony Santa Monica’s epic reimagining of one of PlayStation’s most iconic franchises also took home awards for Best Game Direction and Best Action Adventure.
Shannon Studstill, who runs the first-party developer, accepted the award along with various members from the team – including director Cory Barlog and Kratos actor Christopher Judge. We awarded the title a prestigious 10/10 in our review, heralding it as a “special game”. A worthy winner, for sure.

Ok, that was a surprise. Not talking about the quality of the game, but I was certain that RDR 2 would win, being a multiplatform and all.

This year really was all about rdr2 and gow. All the award they received if given the other way around would have been perfectly justifiable. A pretty good year for gaming when everything's said and done.

I loved RDR2, but GOW was more worthy of the big one. It was basically reborn from the ashes with its new direction, gameplay and all around narrative. Despite it all, RDR2 won its fair share of awards, so it got plenty of love.
I was genuinely surprised, but it's a worthy winner I think. Could have easily gone to Red Dead Redemption 2, but God of War is incredible in its own ways.

@Giygas_95 I'm glad it did. Nothing against RDR2, but it just felt like GoW was the better fit to win the big one. What Santa Monica did with the franchise was amazing.

@get2sammyb I think the way Santa Monica revitalized the franchise probably made it too difficult to forget, which gave it an edge. RDR2 would have been a worthy winner, but I feel that GoW was a bit more special overall.
2018 is a great year for games! Wouldnt have been upset if either game won. The story in GoW was pretty epic so I'm happy it got the gold
Whooooo! That’s right Kratos is back with the crown baby just like he rightfully should be. GOW was easily the better game between it and rdr 2 and it just goes to show that gamers weren’t blinded by its admittedly brilliant open world and didn’t forget the most important thing about a game which is its gameplay which most critics even the ones here did.
YES! While rdr2 is impressive, the gameplay is just okay, a couple of years from now the graphics will be just ok, and the sometimes annoying gameplay mechanics (tap x to run, too easy to fall on horse, police thats too hostile) will rear its ugly head even more.
God of war on the other hand is pure joy to play and explore, a couple of years from now on it will still fun to play I think.

@get2sammyb I don’t believe that because rdr 2 gameplay is pretty mediocre and truthfully outdated just like rockstars missions structure which has been the exact same for over a decade now. It doesn’t matter though you guys were too blinded by its prettiness and amazing open world so you’ll make everything all right in the world by giving it your goty

RDR2 is an incredible accomplishment, but it constantly loses me. I'll play for 4-5 hours, then put it down for 3-4 days.
God of War had me from start to finish.
@Fight_Teza_Fight I know what you mean, rdr2 is an excellent game but the gameplay itself is not up to par with GoW, I'd even go as far to say that Uncharted 4's shooting and combat is far superior than rdr2's combat system

It's GOW all the way for me, I'm on chapter 3 of RDR2 at the mo and I have to say, I'm a wee bit bored! I hope the pace picks up somewhat, it's a snooze fest so far, it also has wonky controls, would be impossible for me to play without auto aim. GOW was absolutely insane, loved every second of it!

@ApostateMage Yep same. I'll definitely have to play it and see because I played the first one and III but didn't really care for the franchise, felt like the same old DMC hack and slash to the finish line. But this new gameplay looks like something I'll love.

was suprised too, .. after GTAIV won GOTY against Mario Galaxy, Fallout 3 and L4D (all of which were imo better / freshet than GTAIV).. ; and after GTAV won GOTY against TLOU (TLOU was imo way better)...; and after RDR2 got higher metascore than GoW...; EVERYONE WAS EXPECTING RDR2 to win XDD..., all the critics are happy GoW was able to win!!
(imo RDR2, GoW and DQ11 were all equally good, .. but GoW was the freshest / a great reboot, happy it won)
I was worried also RD2 would win after taking so many subcategories. Thinking about it Game of the Year should be excluded from subcategories. One game sweeping the categories takes away from other great games. In fact all nominees should receive a award that alone is a great achievement.

@Rai_TheNoblesse And the first Red Dead Redemption won in 2010. The same GameAwards also gave it GTAV in 2013. Got me wondering if they gave it GOW just for a change so the "Games Awards" don't look like Rockstar fanboys.
