What ' alternative experience' can you think of though, on the PS4 system that is even closesly similar to this kind of gameplay? Reviewers are often quick to tell readers to 'play something else that's similar', but more often than not there's nothing around that's similar enough to the "mediocre" game in question.
Disagree 100%. I've played the game for 12 hours so far and think it's most complex motocross game around in terms of physics and gameplay, it's also very generous in terms of single-player content. If you want a sim-like experience this is the best motocross game so far, especially in how the different surfaces feel, which is significantly improved from their previous game. So 'yes', switching engine was a good idea for them.
I've also not had any significant technical issues with the game, there's some minor framedrops at the start of a race with all the drivers, but as they spread out the game runs smoothly for me. It doesn't have the weird camera-angle thing their Supercross game had.
Reviewing a genre or sub-genre you don't like or a real-life sporting franchise you have zero interest in, like MotoGP or MXGP, feels pointless to me. It would be like me reviewing Fortnite or Witcher 3, I would rate those 3/10 as well, because I have no interest in them and their gameplay.
I would give the single-player mode a chance, if available this weekend. I have no interest in multiplayer gaming.
Why did they not focus on single-player instead though?! At least then they would've had a more reliable group of gamers (=buyers).
The success of a multiplayer game is random at the onset and fickle once established. That's why most of them start out in Early Access, which gives them a gague of how popular the game will be once it's finished.
Lots of fun games in my opinion, with some crazy deals if you are a member, … especially if you like Japanese games. I'll be picking up some Yomawari, Tokyo Twilight, and Birthdays the Beginning. Picked up Octahedron from the Indie sale, and Waking Violet from the Plus-offer.
Couldn't agree more. Variety in gaming is a fantastic thing. In discovering new genres it's a nice feeling to peel away your ignorance.
The best thing that's happened to gaming in the last 10 years has been the explosion of Indie games, not just on PC but also on console. The result is that we have gotten increasingly more games in different genres and sub-genres, many of them unqiue and innovative.
I think we all have a few genres we really don't enjoy despite giving them a fair chance though. For me it's predominantly multiplayer games and rogue-likes.
Too many game "critics" and their followers expect developers to follow their ideology, be it left or right. It's highly narcissistic, and even fascist in some cases, the way these people act. They also read politics into everything, and let politics dominate their conversation and thinking about a game.
MotoGP 18 for me, followed by Horizon Chase Turbo, Nobunaga's Ambition: Taishi, Unravel Two, and Rainbow Skies. Special mention to Ikaruga arriving on the PS4.
I haven't played Jurassic World Evolution though, if I had I suspect it would be included in the mix as well.
Lots of racing this weekend on TV: MotoGP, Formula 1, and more. So my gaming time is more limited.
It's all about Indie games for me: Ikaruga, Earth Atlantis, Horizon Chase Turbo, Swords of Ditto, Yoku's Island Express, and a few others I can fit in.
Still waiting for Shikhondo - Soul Eater to arrive on the European Playstation store, which might not happen until July by the looks of it, so that will be my #1 purchase for next month.
Red Faction Guerrilla is a fantastic game, I played it on the Xbox when it came out. For people new to it think 'Just Cause on Mars', rather than 'GTA on Mars'. It's old-school action at its very best.
Shining Resonance Refrain has my interest after playing the demo, the combat was fun and I like the premise, but you know … money.
The Spectrum Retreat looks fascinating. I like first-person puzzle games, however the 'mind-bending physics challenges' it claims to have is a worry; I'm frustratingly bad at physics-based puzzles. It depends on how they define 'physics challenges' though. I'm hoping it's more like AntiChamber or Path to Thalamus on PC, or the QUBE games, rather than the Talos Principle, the Turing Test or Portal.
There's plenty of Indie games and niche titles that interest me just as much as these bigger ones:
Shikhondo, an awesome-looking Korean bullet-hell game 8-Bit Armies, a fun RTS that I played lots of on PC, but I will definitely re-buy it for the PS4 as well Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk, a Japanese-style dungeon-crawler, I really like this style of game Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, a platform adventure game that looks really fun to play
F1 2018, I'm really interested to see what Codemasters can do to possibly improve on an already fantastic F1 game; F1 2017 Ride 3, I've been into bike racing games for a long time, and it's nice to see how the Ride games get dramatically better with each new addition
Primal is still my favourite, but all the games in the series have been fun to play through. Far Cry 2 was the deepest and most engaging one for me, but Far Cry 4 and Primal had the most cool stuff in their games. Primal and Blood Dragon are the only ones I would replay, so I don't think this remaster is for me.
@KALofKRYPTON That's true of the West as well, just look at Britney Spears when she started out, to use one of many examples. The schoolgirl (=teenage girl) fetish is as much a Western "habit" as it is a Japanese one.
The ever-present schoolgirls in Japanese games can, to a large extent, be explained by who their target audience is; teenage boys. Girls wear uniform in Japan, so if you make a game with teenagers, for teenagers, the developers probably think there's not much option. Of-course, teenage boys in Japanese games also tend to wear uniform.
I'm not saying there's no schoolgirl fetish in Japan, there is, but that's just one aspect of it; I don't think it's just about pleasing perverted 40 year-old men.
In Japan, video games are predominantly bought and played by teens, not adults. So having sexy teens in a game is not a "paedo thing" over there, as their purpose is to appeal to Japanese teenage boys.
In the West, games are predominantly bought and played by adults, so it becomes a "paedo thing" in a way… if you have that persuasion.
@nessisonett Same here. Although I stopped buying on GOG some time ago, my backlog from there is huge. I'm slowly making my way through Space Colony HD, when I find time for it. 'Bloodlines' was great.
Nobunaga's Ambition: Taishi, a few differences here and there from the previous ones, but on the whole it gives me what I want and expect. The music is awesome.
God of War (2018). Initially I didn't enjoy the combat: I felt that it depended far too much on accurate parrying for survival, againts the stronger enemies that is. I dislike the Bloodborne/Dark Souls-style combat. However as I started levelling up I could personalize the combat somewhat, so I'm enjoying it more. The rest of the game though is fantastic, so I hope I can do the combat in my way and not the Bloodborne/Dark Souls-style way.
MotoGP 18 and Skyforce Reloaded. I've re-discovered the joy of sidescroll shooters and bullethell-games, I haven't played one of these in years and the current sale has a whole bunch of them at a great price.
@KALofKRYPTON I picked up Resogun early on, but haven't played one of these games since, … not sure why. Having a great time getting into these kind of games again though.
That's one petty director, if nothing else this game is good marketing for any future movie ... which he doesn't even seem to be working on. So what's the point of this lawsuit, en ego trip?
I'm currently re-discovering bullet-hell games and shoot'em-ups so the timing of this is great. I recently bought Sine Mora EX, Sky Force Reloaded, Nano Assault, and Jamestown+ from the current sale.
@Rob_230 Maybe I'm just imagining this, but I think American gaming media is rather biased towards Xbox. It's PC first, Nintendo second, XBox third, and PS4 last. With American gaming media dominating Western gaming media, it's not odd to see things like this inflating. Like I said, this could just be my imagination.
Zero. I'm a single-player gamer. Don't care about multiplayer.
There are three groups driving this matter:
1) people "desperately searching for something to fight over"
2) gaming media outlets who depend on clickbaiting for views
3) gamers with rational concerns or arguments
These people should have looked this matter up beforehand, it's the first thing I would have done.
@Bioth I had a similar problem with Skyrim on the PS3, I was unable to complete the final battle because of a bug. So I have never actually finished the game after playing it for 60 hours or so. I don't know if they ever fixed this problem but I moved on to other games and never looked back.
However, the game worked really well until they started updating things. That's when things went bad in my opinion. For example, one of the updates caused you to die if you entered water. Their attempts at fixing smaller issues instead made the whole game worse.
A game-ending bug is still a one-off occurrence for Bethesda, it never happened with their Fallout games and the other Scrolls games. At least not for me.
There are Youtube gamers who actively pursue bugs and glitches, and who attempt to force a game to do something weird or funny in order to attract views to their Youtube channel. These get a 100k views, the media jumps on it, and suddenly a bug or glitch the average player is unlikely to ever come across is suddenly a big dramatic problem.
It's not that I claim Bethesda games are 100% perfect at launch, but most big open-world games have glitches and bugs at launch; Kingdom Come Deliverance, the Witcher 3, GTA 5, and so on. What I object to is how people single-out Bethesda for having these kind of problems at launch. In my personal experience I don't think their games are worse than any other such big open-world games. It's different with linear games, because there are fewer variables involved.
I wish it was an offline game. I'm still hoping for a good Test Drive Unlimited alternative to play one day, of which there is none yet. The Forza Horizon concept looked promising but the storyline and constant narrative got in the way of the fun. Just give me a big open world with lots of vehicles and proper racing, but no storyline, and let me be.
Timed-exclusives are an archaic tool that only looks silly and pointless in this day of age, no matter what the direction is: Xbox -> PS4, PS4 -> PC, PC -> console, and so on. As if Xbox gamers and PC gamers will spend hundreds of euros buying a PS4 simply because a game is a timed-exclusive on that system, … and vice versa of-course. Nobody does that. It's pointless. It doesn't sell more hardware and software. People buying it for the PS4/Xbox/PC are people who already own that particular system.
The first game had multiplayer? I've played the game but have no recollection of seeing anything multiplayer in it lol, must be my selective memory operating.
I finished Detroit today and got an acceptable ending. I tried to stay on the "middle road" with my first playthrough. I'll definitely be having another playthrough later this year, but will aim for one of the more extreme paths. A fantastic game; loved the acting, characters and story. All three protagonists deserve to have their own game to be honest.
Some MotoGP 18 and Assassin's Creed Origins DLCs. Try to complete Ni no Kuni 2 as well.
Haven't played their games so I'm indifferent. All developers have to follow the money if they want to survive, that's my take on it. With smaller developer like this, their loyalty is with their company and its employees first and foremost.
The facts are: Microsoft needs to sell more Xbox-es and promote their PC platform. Especially as Valve's vision is to move away from Windows and the Xbox is struggling to compete with Playstation.
I highly doubt Ninja's next game will appear on Steam. Having it exclusive to Microsoft's own PC platform is the smartest move, considering how well respected the developer is with the PC community. Microsoft needs big titles and games.
My own list would look something like this, in no specific order:
1) Spyro Reignited Trilogy
2) Concrete Genie
3) Days Gone
4) Death Stranding
5) Dreams
6) Ghost of Tsushima
7) The Last of Us Part II
8) Spider-Man
9) Dragon Quest XI
10) Assassin's Creed Odyssey
11) Sea of Solitude
12) Trover Saves the Universe
13) The Surge 2
14) Unravel Two
15) Pro Evolution Soccer 2019
16) Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk
17) Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin
18) Fate/Extella Link
19) GreedFall
20) Planet Alpha
It was a lackluster E3 for racing games. I only got Forza Horizon 4 and Assetto Corsa Competizione, neither of which interest me. I expected to see some F1 2018, MXGP Pro, Ride 2, Grip, V Rally 4, Dakar 18, some new Gran Turismo stuff and so on.
A fantastic set of PS4 exclusives though and a really good selection of Japanese games overall.
… that's my gaming-life in a nutshell; racing games, PS4 exclusives and lots of Japanese games.
To me all Japanese games are better in Japanese. I wish I could pick language and subtitle separately in all games, like you can do in most Japanese games.
Yakuza Kiwami 2
Ghost of Tsushima
Spyro Reignited Trilogy
Followed marginally by: Dragon Quest XI - Echoes of an Elusive Age
Then: The Last of Us Part II, Spider-Man, Unravel Two (loved the first game), Dreams
It has sold plenty of copies on PC though, despite a number of negative reviews: 200-500k according to Steamspy. I don't think the console figures will be as high, but at least 100k I would think.
I can understand certain PC gamers being disappointed, given how many complex managerial strategy games they can choose from, but I never got the impression this game would ever be a "hardcore" strategy game. I expected something on the same level as Tropico, and that is what this game seems to be.
I think the game will mostly be enjoyable for fans of the movies, rather than fans of strategy games specifially. I'm a big fan of all the movies, 'yes' even the last one. They're spectacular simplistic sci-fi fun. I view the game in the same way, as an extension or complement of the movie-experiences.
@Rudy_Manchego I agree. For me the Mythos-based books were all about psychological horror or terror, not gore and action. The resounding note was that of hopelessness, not matter what you did they would get to you.
Most game developers however, took the idea of otherworldly gods and turned them into tangible Alien beings you could fight or even kill with a gun or bomb. They don't capture the surrealism and mystery, and always become "too gamey" at some point. A lot of developers who claim to be fans of the Mythos haven't actually read any of the books it seems, and are limited to an wikipedia-induced understanding that translates into "squid-like creatures from another dimension".
I think the game 'Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth' did a good job of capturing the mood of the books ... apart from the latter action parts of the game, which were disappointing to me.
Personally, I think the 'exploration game' genre would be the best to capture the mood and atmosphere of the Cthulhu Mythos, something in style of 'Dear Esther', 'Everybody's Gone to the Rapture' and 'What Remains of Edith Finch'.
Finally a game that seems to capture a good Mythos atmosphere. A slow-poke adventure game like this is an ideal medium for it, not action games or platformers. It has potential.
@Gamer83 I get your point, I really do. Not an issue.
I don't agree with pairing Yakuza alongside GTA. The average GTA fan would never touch a game as "foreign" and alien as Yakuza. Even Sleeping Dogs was a hard sell despite it having English voicecasting and an American protagonist. Yakuza has far more cultural depth and scope than a GTA game. In my experience the non-Japanese gamers who enjoy playing Yakuza games are actually interested in other cultures, especially the Japanese one, it's a personal characteristic I don't associate with the average GTA fan.
It's always the same people doing the complaining, they post anywhere they can using different names; Youtube, Twitter, Twitch, Steam and so on. It gives others the impression they are many, when they are not. They are a tiny but very vocal minority.
People making a big issue about realism in this matter are using it as way to hide their bigotry, they don't actually care about realism, they are lonely 14-year old boys who don't like having women in traditionally male roles.
Now I don't want to start a PC-console thing, but I think most of these people are PC gamers. They have the same extremist attitude as the Masterrace folk. It can't be a coincident. Some of them even seem to pose as Playstation gamers, which is insulting.
@PS_Nation Yeah, the bigots sure have learned to use a keyboard lol. The bizarre thing is, I usually can't tell whether these people are white supremacists or Islamic fundamentalists. Neither of them respect women and they both hate LBGT-people, so they have lots of things in common.
It's mainly younger people and the Big Gaming Media who are complaing, seasoned gamers know better in general.
Younger people don't have much patience, and today they have an easily accessible medium to throw a tantrum in. They are also not aware of how much is involved in making a game that's not a one-person Early Access game, done using existing content.
Big Media and popular game critics are eager to wave and shout whenever a game gets delayed. That mentality is part of the problem. Typically, if a game is delayed these people will immediately start doubting the quality of the game. It's passive aggressive behaviour that's very attractive to younger gamers.
Meh, I want story-based DLC, not survival and multiplayer stuff. At least it's a new setting, so that's good. I will still try it out though, given my reverence for core game, and who knows … it could be 'the one' game that makes this kind of thing actually fun.
I'm always happy when consumers contradict our rather one-sided gaming media concerning "bad" or "mediocre" games.
Onrush was not a surprise though; had they focused on single-player in MotoStorm-style it would have been at the top. Blindly following the everything-must-be-multiplayer trend does not always pay off.
Forza Horizon was an awesome series, but now they have completely focused on multiplayer, which is terrible in my eyes. I'm fully against turning great single-player experiences in soulless multiplayer ones. It's all very unfortunate, because the Forza games are ahead of Gran Turismo when it comes weather effects, and now even seasons.
The only pull for me with buying an Xbox was the Forza Motorsport and Forza Horizon games, but they have all been aiming for multiplayer nonsense, so I don't feel inclided to buy an Xbox at all.

Re: Guide: Upcoming PS4 Exclusive Games
Concrete Genie is at the top for me, I will buy it at launch. It looks like an interesting and unique game to play.
The only one that doesn't really interest me is Erica, the only FMV games I've enjoyed were the Tex Murphy ones.
The rest I will definitely buy at some point, but not at launch.

It doesn't sell more hardware and software. People buying it for the PS4/Xbox/PC are people who already own that particular system.
Re: Review: The Lost Child (PS4)
Still gonna buy it though, looks like my kind of thing.
Re: E3 2018: The Last of Us' Fantastic Factions Multiplayer Will Return
The first game had multiplayer? I've played the game but have no recollection of seeing anything multiplayer in it lol, must be my selective memory operating.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 224
Re: Why Ninja Theory's Leaving PlayStation

Re: Reaction: Great Games Rule Supreme at E3 2018
It was a lackluster E3 for racing games. I only got Forza Horizon 4 and Assetto Corsa Competizione, neither of which interest me. I expected to see some F1 2018, MXGP Pro, Ride 2, Grip, V Rally 4, Dakar 18, some new Gran Turismo stuff and so on.
A fantastic set of PS4 exclusives though and a really good selection of Japanese games overall.
… that's my gaming-life in a nutshell; racing games, PS4 exclusives and lots of Japanese games.
Re: E3 2018: Ghost of Tsushima Really Is Better in Japanese
To me all Japanese games are better in Japanese. I wish I could pick language and subtitle separately in all games, like you can do in most Japanese games.
Re: Poll: What Was the Best PS4 Game at E3 2018?
Yakuza Kiwami 2
Ghost of Tsushima
Spyro Reignited Trilogy
Followed marginally by: Dragon Quest XI - Echoes of an Elusive Age
Then: The Last of Us Part II, Spider-Man, Unravel Two (loved the first game), Dreams
Re: Review: Jurassic World Evolution (PS4)
Re: E3 2018: Call of Cthulhu Tiptoes to the Mountains of Madness
Re: E3 2018: Call of Cthulhu Tiptoes to the Mountains of Madness
Finally a game that seems to capture a good Mythos atmosphere. A slow-poke adventure game like this is an ideal medium for it, not action games or platformers. It has potential.
Re: E3 2018: Spyro Reignited Trilogy Looks Like a Nostalgic Dream Come True
I never played the originals, so this is a big thing for me, looks like timeless fun.
Re: EA Gives the Middle Finger to Those Against Women in Battlefield V
Re: EA Gives the Middle Finger to Those Against Women in Battlefield V
Re: Soapbox: E3 2018 Demonstrates the Disconnect Between Gamer Demands and Development Realities
@PS_Nation Yeah, the bigots sure have learned to use a keyboard lol. The bizarre thing is, I usually can't tell whether these people are white supremacists or Islamic fundamentalists. Neither of them respect women and they both hate LBGT-people, so they have lots of things in common.
Re: Soapbox: E3 2018 Demonstrates the Disconnect Between Gamer Demands and Development Realities
Re: E3 2018: New Content, Game Modes Coming to PREY on PS4
Meh, I want story-based DLC, not survival and multiplayer stuff. At least it's a new setting, so that's good. I will still try it out though, given my reverence for core game, and who knows … it could be 'the one' game that makes this kind of thing actually fun.
Re: UK Sales Charts: Vampyr Sinks Its Teeth into the No.1 Spot
I'm always happy when consumers contradict our rather one-sided gaming media concerning "bad" or "mediocre" games.
Onrush was not a surprise though; had they focused on single-player in MotoStorm-style it would have been at the top. Blindly following the everything-must-be-multiplayer trend does not always pay off.
Re: Reaction: Microsoft's E3 2018 Press Conference Was Killer for PS4 Owners
@tabris95 Not to mention what they did to PlatinumGames, Microsoft cancelling the Scalebound game would have bankrupted the developer had not Nier: Automata been such a hit (source: https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2018-06-01-why-platinum-games-may-never-work-with-a-publisher-again).
Re: Reaction: Microsoft's E3 2018 Press Conference Was Killer for PS4 Owners
Forza Horizon was an awesome series, but now they have completely focused on multiplayer, which is terrible in my eyes. I'm fully against turning great single-player experiences in soulless multiplayer ones. It's all very unfortunate, because the Forza games are ahead of Gran Turismo when it comes weather effects, and now even seasons.
The only pull for me with buying an Xbox was the Forza Motorsport and Forza Horizon games, but they have all been aiming for multiplayer nonsense, so I don't feel inclided to buy an Xbox at all.
