I'm glad to see all the representation for Celeste. It's an excellent little game that I don't feel got enough attention when it launched

Happy to see Detroit BH nominated even though I think it could also be for best actors, graphics etc

Sony dominated hard this year.

I'm surprised and disappointed that Xenoblade 2 was totally snubbed this year. It's a wonderful game with a brilliant OST.

@AstralOrange64 Smash will be up for awards next year, given the late release.

Spiderman shouldn't be here but the rest are good nominations.

Detroit and Red Dead Redemption 2 would get my votes.

Xenoblade gets nothing huh? What a sham. Ass Creed Odyssey is getting far too much credit.

anyway regardless of the excellent red dead,if most Sony games win their respective catergories then Sony will Be the big winner. Even if red dead wins the the big price.

I'd be down for Spiderman (would be a good way to honour Stan Lee's memory) or God Of War making an upset. But no doubt RDR2 already has one hand on the GOTY trophy

I genuinely don't think RDR2 should win GoTY. Don't think it deserves it.

The world is amazing but the gameplay is archaic and has painful pacing. In fact doing anything in the game takes an age and feel like it's R* forcing people to appreciate the beautiful world they crafted to the detriment of gameplay with poor game design. It's the most disappointing game for me for ages as I was so looking forward to it. I'm forcing myself to play rather than wanting to.

RDR2 doesn't come close to RDR1 imo and would much rather GoW won which I think deserves it more.

Sony has had a fantastic publishing year. So many great games.
GOW would be my GOTY, followed by Astro Bot.
I'm glad Detroit is getting some recognition. David Cage hate aside, it's absolutely fantastic. I don't think they'll ever make a better game.

I want it to be God of War, but it's gonna be RDR2, as much as I enjoy that game.

Gross, give it to God of War. RDR2 is good but it's definitely not on the same level as GoW, IMO.

anyway voted for dragon quest for best RPG,red dead for best action game and sound design,GOW for best art design and game of the year.

Should be a cleanup for Red Dead. Only GoW could compete against that.

Everything else is less than perfect.

Sea of Thieves, Tomb Raider, State of Decay 2, Metal Gear Survive and Fallout 76 should be among the GOTY nominees.

@AdamNovice it's always kinda unfair when a rockstar game is in the list. not because of the quailty but just because everyone eats that brand up no matter if it is actually a good game or not.

altough same could be said for naughty dog but then again even TLOU 2 would lose against any open world action game made by rockstar. just because it is rockstar.

@PS_Nation also add a new catergory called best developer of the year and nominate bethesda for it's honesty,fairness and capabilities,EA as best publisher for it's great consumer support and quality SP focused games,and konami for best evolution in gaming regarding the mobile platform.

God of War deserves it more than RDR2. Can't even force myself to finish that context driven snooze-fest.

tbh it's a tie between GOW and red dead for me. altough i would have a huge grin if GOW wins the big one. just to shut up those people that call red dead the best game of all time,because it just is not.

New Army recruits are in perma crunch in Afghanistan on as little as 18k a year. I understand we want great working conditions and quality of life and I certainly don't agree with unpaid labour. But the goty is based on the final product not how it got there.

God of War has to be GOTY for me, that game is brilliant on all levels, fantastic art direction, great story and combat and it feels like the culmination of all of my years of gaming. It takes the best of finding loot and levelling up and combines it with excellent combat and elements of Zelda and Metroidvania games.

Spider-Man would be second as any game that has the unholy trinity of towers, QTE's and forced stealth but doesn't make me it it and actually enjoy them has done something right. Swinging through the city is the best traversal system in any game and the combat is great fun with plenty of options and I loved the main story, only some occasionally iffy side content lets it down.

Finally RDR2 rounds out the top 3, without a doubt this has the best world in any open world game and the story is superb once it gets going and if you have the time and are invested there is a deep rabbit hole of content to disappear into. Unfortunately actually playing the game is where it falls down, the controls are sluggish and at times just plain bad with many conflicting button commands (I accidentally choked someone just trying to get on my horse this morning) Arthur moves so slowly but weirdly is awkward to control when you actually do want to walk slowly, the game loves to remove your guns at any given chance. When it works it's still fun to play but so many times I'm taken out of the experience for so many silly reasons

Oh and why is Jim Sterling not nominated for best content creator?

it's never about what games are actually the best but which one make them the most money

Nice to see Detroit getting more love than I expected.

Astro Bot on the other hand is one of the most highly reviewed games of the year, yet only got one nod. I guess it got instantly disregarded due to it being a VR game.

@funkyflounder83 people would still vote for RDR2 blindly because its Rockstar Games. RDR2 is amazing but it isn't God of War amazing.

Red dead will win GOTY but I think GOW deserves it more. It's just a better game especially in gameplay mechanics.

@jdv95 It is not overrated. Zelda BotW was deservedly GotY and would be this year if it released also.

Yeah, this is coming from the guy with the Link avatar, but in my opinion last year’s Mario Odyssey, Zelda Breath of the Wild and Horizon Zero Dawn are all better games than this year’s offerings.

I do really like God of War, Spider-Man and RDR2, especially GoW, but for me I just really loved last year’s games that bit more.

None of my favourites ever win in these contests, and this year will be no different: Ni no Kuni 2, Lost Sphear, Yakuza 6, Dragon Quest XI, Valkyria Chronicles 4, Forgotton Anne ...

Between the actual contenders in for a shot to win I hope Red Dead 2 wins. I did not enjoy God of War and haven't played Spider-Man yet.

@JJ2 you have to stand next to your horse to equip 2 slots for large weapons on the weapon wheel but quite often when you're on your horse Arthur puts these away so when you get off again they are no longer there and you have to equip them again, assuming you noticed that it happened. Many times I've been exploring and get into a gun fight to find I only have my pistols with me

Did nt notice. I just usually make sure I have the weapons I need when I leave my horse. He does put them back on the horse when riding but I assumed that made sense since that seems natural

RDR2 is a mess in so many ways.

i pretty much only voted for RDR2 and Celeste. God of War was really good too though. Spiderman was kind of meh, and haven't played the other two.

God of war is easily game of the year for me

Didn't vote, didn't feel like signing up, in, whatever, but I only would have voted for DQXI for JRPG, and Yoku's Island Express for best new indie game.

So how many people will vote for NMS for best ongoing game? I almost choked on my own bewilderment when I saw that.

I'll vote for GoW when it runs it's course, similar to the first 2 LotR movies not getting much at the Academy Awards but the 3rd and final movie running away with nearly everything, 11 freaking Oscars. Whenever that final game comes, 2 or 3, nothing will stand in its way.

God of War was a better game than RDR2 imo.
Currently playing through Dragon Quest XI and it'll probably end up being my personal GOTY.

I get the rave about RDR2, but God of War has much better directing (I mean, one-shot from start to end! That's crazy awesome) & art direction..

I’m so tired of this site acting like rdr 2 is the be all end all of games and that it’s a forgone conclusion it’s going to win every award. Gow has already won two goty awards from UK sites so it’s not like it’s some massive underdog. With that said I expect rdr 2 to win goty at the game awards because the show has always been nothing but a popularity contest and no one really takes it seriously they just tune in to mock and see what gets revealed

RDR2 will win GOTY but it absolutely doesn't deserve it, at all. Another vote for GOW here, superior in every single way

Red Dead Redemption 2 will win Game of the Year but I'd have it third on that list behind God of War and Spider-Man.

Looking at things subjectively (just based on how much fun I had playing a certain game), right now my top five are...
1. Yakuza Kiwami 2
2. Spider-Man
3. God of War
4. Shadow of the Tomb Raider
5. Soul Calibur 6

Objectively if voting for GOTY and factoring everything in:
1. God of War
2. Spider-Man
3. Forza Horizon 4
4. Red Dead Redemption 2
5. Monster Hunter World

When all is said and done and I do a top 10 at the end of the year I expect Smash will make my list somewhere, probably in the top 5.

Everything about God of War is better, imo. Better story and characters, better world (even if it isn't a vast open world), better, more fun and varied gameplay. There's really nothing I think about RDR 2 that is that special. It's a great game, no doubt, but people are acting like it's the end all be all and much like RDR 1, I'm just not seeing it. I still much prefer GTA as far as Rockstar series go. Hell if they bring Bully back and a sequel is as good as the first I'd also have that above the RDR games.

@AdamNovice That’s a good point about the PlayStation votes potentially cannibalizing each other. In a popular vote, the sheer number of copies of RDR2 out there will likely overpower the other games, whilst a lesser quantity of people who played Spider-Man and GoW will split their votes a little bit. Come to think of it, that may have been a factor last year with Persona 5 and HZD losing to Zelda.
Due to console bias, there probably should be some sort of algorithm to tabulating the votes for these things to make it “fair” — such as popular votes from the internet only count so much and then journalist “expert” votes carry more weight or something. Not that gaming journalist can’t be biased but at least most of them play all the games.
Just a thought.

tbh I can see many PS4 gamers voting for GOW instead of red dead and that could make a difference.

but then again many Xbox gamers will vote for red dead just because it is also on their platform and to prevent a Sony exclusive from winning.

although TLOU won the award instead of GTA v so GOW could still win if that is something to go by.

As much as I loved Spider-Man, God of War has it for me. Surpassed my expectations in every way and one of those games I wish I could completely forget so I could start it fresh all over again!
