I skimmed through the comments and it seems like this announcement is being met with some negativity, which is quite the opposite of the hype that I’m sure Sony was hoping to see.
Between the increase in Game Pass, and the lack of buzz for next generation, I might just sit this out until ~ 2030, and focus on my various backlogs. Slightly better lighting is not a selling point. My favorite games right now are Hades 2 and FF Tactics Remake, and neither are graphical powerhouses.
I am still likely to wait for the Switch 2 version. If the PS5 physical version ran directly from the DVD-ROM, then I guess I would argue that I don't have to waste my internal SSD on the file installation size... Oh wait.
Mostly I will be playing Hades II. I did get the Alan Wake 2 Deluxe Edition physical disc, but I'm waiting until a little closer to spooky season to try it out.
@nomither6
I still view Nintendo as being in the console bucket, as opposed to PC or mobile. The pure handheld market dried up after Vita and 3DS. The other handhelds such as Asus and Lenovo are still PCs, basically small laptops with controllers instead of keyboards. If MS goes 3rd party and Switch 2 does a Wii U, I don’t think Sony can be a lone champion in a shrinking pool. So I think it’s good for Switch 2 to be commercially viable, for the type of games that I enjoy.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner C’mom now, Saudi Arabia has a women’s national team. If anything they will mandate that this squad is included in the EA FC 27 lineup.
Hmmm. I started the demo and had it pause for other reasons. It seemed promising enough. It stands at 81 on Open Critic though... this will go into the pile of maybe one day add it to the backlog during a flash sale, as opposed to day 1. I already got Hades 2 and FF Tactics on Switch to keep me occupied with new releases.
@WhoderMan
I got a feeling as well that some of visceral reaction against this has subtle racist undertones. Like there may be an anti-Arab prejudice that they should not be allowed to own a Western company. I saw something like this last year when the Nippon Steel wanted to purchase US Steel. The Japanese were cited as being evil.*
Don’t get me wrong. I have no love lost for the Saudi royalty or the Kushners, but when I see such intense responses, I suspect there an element of bias, and it is less about being rational.
@Ainu20 Well this is a fair reason to boycott if you want to make a point. At least this kind of boycott has meaningful consequences, as opposed to all tbe posturing about boycotting game key-cards.
@AhmadSumadi
I just don’t keep up with this side of the games industry. I honestly had not heard of these investors before. I wanted to solicit advice from some of the more knowledgeable commentators. Thanks for the constructive criticism.
@Ainu20 Pardon my ignorance, but could you elaborate on what makes the new owners grotesque and repulsive? Like are there news articles where they did harm that I can find? I’m not looking to start a debate. I’m just wondering why so many people seem to have immediate negative reactions to this corporate transaction.
I could do my own research, but that would take time. Can people comment on what are the moral or ethical known problems with the new ownership? From my standpoint, all corporations are more or less the same, which is to say, profit driven, and not necessarily looking to be altruistic.
@ThatOldGit
I actually used my PS Stars points to redeem the Stellar Blade Deluxe Pack DLC back when this game came out. I found the old point system helpful to get these $5-10 add ons that I normally would pass up.
I thought it was very good in terms of the pace and flow. As far as the games themselves, I’ll only get the Wolverine. Saros creeped me out the same way as Returnal. No thank you. FF Tactics is better suited to Switch. I never bothered getting the remake of TLOU2, so I’m glad that is coming to the subscription service. One that flew under the radar is the one with a forgettable name that looks like a Disco Elysium sequel?
I got into Dead Cells on Switch lately. I got the demos for the new Digimon game, and I might try the SW: Outlaws demo again, which was a bit dull the first time I picked it up.
I'm not sure if they can put the genie back in the bottle, since Xbox and PS gamers have been conditioned to want more power, to rival PC -> a handheld version of these same games would feel gimped. Nintendo get away with it because their first party games don't strive for photorealism, and they seem to get a pass with visual cutbacks from the 3rd party ports.
I got a PS5 in 2021, and although I enjoy it at times, I don't know if it lived up to the promise of this generation. I actually got it to play the SW: KOTOR remake PS5 exclusive that ended up being vaporware.
@Rich33
This is quite fascinating. I wonder if this headache phenomenon is similar to the seizure warning they place at the beginning of some visual media.
This is the only Metal Gear I ever played and it was on 3DS couple years ago. So as much as I liked it, I don’t think I want to revisit it anytime soon. The boss fights were really fun. I went in blind without using any kind of instructions and didn’t know you can change your weapon until halfway into my playthrough.. I was trying to beat the mini boss with a pee shooter
OK I will check out this Tom's guy. I'm skeptical that newer tech will be cheaper than older tech though. Usually it is the other way around. I guess we see something like that with Macbook Air those have lowered their base price, or at least not gone up much with inflation.
This pretty much ends my slight interest in getting a PS5 Pro. If I didn't pull the trigger last year when the had some sales going on, it's not worth it now.
I had this on my Switch wish list forever. I finally got it used, beat it once, and sold it. I give about 7.5 score. I had my time with it, but did not feel like I would do another playthrough. Maybe years down the line, I could revisit this on PC if it was like $10-15. It certainly has some neat unique map designs, but I found aspects of the combat frustrating, and the characters didn't do much for me.
I'll load Unicorn Overlord just to see how it compares, but after spending 150 hours on it last year with Switch 1, I don't have time for another playthrough. It might be my first chance to try the Atelier series though.
I assumed by all these comments, although no one stated as such, that eventually, Sony will make televisions which include the PlayStation platform built-in without a separate box? Without that I cannot see console being entirely replaced by PC or mobile because those do not connect as well to an 85 inch TV with seven speakers and a comfy couch. I guess it’s possible that you could cast from my PC or phone to the TV but the technology would have to be seamless..
@11001100110zero I see this playing out with my three teenagers. Most of their time is Roblox Minecraft Valorant Fortnite on PC, which they also use for schoolwork. You really can’t be a student nowadays and not have a PC. You don’t need to have a console though. A generation ago these needs would’ve been satisfied by consoles. I think that’s why we see globally PC gaming is ramping up, console is flat, but both are overshadowed by casual mobile, which I don’t think is the same audience as the people on this website..
@DTfearTheBEARD Sometimes I think about selling my physical library and converting the ones I like to digital just to be ready, but I guess there’s no rush to doing so. The PS Portal experience is hampered by having to walk down two flights of stairs to change the disc.
@Faultandfracture Yes, and if it is without a disc drive, then it’s not really backwards compatible for my physical library. As such, I’d probably just stick with PS5 until I get tired of it and then cross over to PC gaming
@QwarktasticLombax GTA 6 base price announcement could be a watershed moment. I’m still not sure why Nintendo chose Mario Kart World as their first $80 base game when they were perfectly willing to “discount“ it to $50 in the launch day console bundle. Tears of the Kingdom is also $80 but again the Switch 1 edition was already $70 and for the Nintendo online members the upgrade is free.
I will try to finish Fire Emblem (GBA), and try out Romancing SaGa 2 on Switch. On PS5, I may try to make progress on Tales of Arise, or go back to Ghost of Tsushima, which I started but dropped fairly early on. Xbox Series S... just turn on and admire the UI, but unlikely to play anything of substance.
@ZeroSum I think it is fair to criticize the submission that broke the rules by using AI, without judging or even knowing the person's intentions or level of innate talent. We all see what is happening around us with computers replacing humans, and we have a right to voice our concerns when we see it manifest in such a brazen manner. The more I read about it, the more I see "scraping" as theft of intellectual property on an industrial scale. Unfortunately, since "the Chinese will do it anyway," then we all have to follow. So goes humanity.
@RoomWithaMoose As a Gen X-er, I assumed it was over after ROTS in 2005. I did watch some Clone Wars, but a cartoon cannot sustain an IP. I was happy when I heard they were making a sequel triology. Since then, it has been decent, with some great output including Mandarlorian season 1/2 and Andor, along with a lot of filler. The SW Jedi games were pretty good, compared to other titles that came out those years. In the end, nothing is perfect, so judge for yourself. Personally, I didn't jive with the SW Outlaws demo on PS5, but I may give it another look it it runs well on Switch 2.
