However, we're interested to know — which are your favourites to win in each category? While some of them aren't super relevant to most, we've included polls above, allowing you to have your say on what games deserve to take home which awards.

Wow no nominations whatsoever for Trails in the Sky Remake, what a joke.
Sorry, every other game. E33 is hopefully going to sweep every category it is in.
Bad year for Death Stranding 2 to come out.
Ghost of Yotei not even being nominated is such a joke.
Wow, Ghost of Yōtei didn’t get a GOTY nom. It got so many other nominations, especially compared to Donkey Kong which only got one, and didn’t get to GOTY.
Based on most likely to win to least likely, I have it:
Expedition 33
Hades 2
Hollow Knight Silksong
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2
Donkey Kong Bananza
Death Stranding 2
@BamBamBaklava89 what would you replace? All the games nominated for GOTY are so good.
Well done Sandfall, they absolutely smashed it.
E33 sweeps for me other then best RPG what goes for KC2 for me. Hard to pick between Ben Starr and Jennifer English for best performance, both were incredible with Starr even converting me to a fan his now but i picked Jennifer English as her voice is spellbinding and enchanting.
I have a feeling we're going to see Expedition 33 sweep a lot of categories this year. I only played a little bit of it last spring/summer, but I need to keep playing.
For my GotY, it has to be Silksong. The game was so good and I loved the entire 70 hours I put into it.
I haven't played Death Stranding 2 yet since I'm waiting for a PC release, I want to play Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, I liked Bananza but I kinda fell away from it without finishing it, haven't played Hades 2.
@BamBamBaklava89 I put it above DS2 myself but it was never getting a GOTY nom. Year is too stacked and Geoff will never have a Kojima game not in the running.
Expedition 33 is going to win more awards than any game has ever won at one of these shows.
Why is sports and racing the same category? Bit weird.
I put Expedition 33 as winning virtually every category + Jennifer English & Lorien Testard.
Hades 2, Silksong, Despelote, The Alters, DK Bananza, Split Fiction, GTA6 among the few to scrape an award.
Expedition 33 made me feel like I felt in the 90s when a new Final Fantasy arrived. From the first moment of booting it up and just sitting on the title screen listing to the music through to the end credits it was a special experience. Nothing quite came close, though Silksong was closest.
Largely predictable lists. Also I think it's been pretty obvious since it came out that Expedition 33 is going to clean up. It hit in a way few games do. Even ones with higer metacritics or more sales. It's a game people talk about. You can imagine fanfictions and cosplay. It's got the sauce.
People not voting for Konatsu Kato for Voice acting award is wild.
I think it’s a whitewash for Clair obscur. It’s my game of the year by a long way and I don’t see it being beaten.
Love to see Shinobi get a much deserved nomination. Clair Obscur for top prize, narrative and music (a real shame KCDII didn’t get a nomination for music). KCDII for best RPG. Silent Hill f for best audio design. Ghost of Yotei for best action/adventure. Don’t have a strong enough opinion on the rest.
Shame that Ghost of Yotei was snubbed for GOTY, still DS2 keeps PlayStation Studio's run going.
Also Twisted Metal not been in the best adaptation category is wild.
I'm a bit sorry for Kingdoms Come 2, such a great game, but Expedition 33 should win every award its being nominated for.
Damn I sure hope there is some more variety compared to how everyone voted. E33 is an amazing game but damn. A lot of games will get the shaft in categories they did very well in. Id for sure give it soundtrack and potentially best performance. But GoTY is a lot of phenomenal games, minus Silksong imo. And Indie just seems disingenuous to me. I know the definition is blurred but I feel like budget has to be considered. Im gonna get torched for that but I stand by it lol
@UltimateOtaku91 at this point, there should be a category for best remake/remaster since they have become a staple in the gaming space. trails in the sky would find its way in that category at the very least.
I don't care about anything else but I am here for Sonic Crossworlds to actually dethrone Mario Kart World for a lot of good reasons in front of millions of people.
Otherwise known as the Clair Obscur awards. My votes go to Sonic Crossworlds 👍
Monster Hunter 👏 Isn't 👏 An RPG 👏
Never has been, either.
And.. After feeling like the year has been kind of stacked, seeing the nominees makes me realize how...lame 2025 was, imho.
Just give Expedition 33 everything and call it a day.
@ShadowRJ easily Hades. But I think it’s worthy over Silksong as well
I didnt personally gell with Expedition 33, but that aside, it clearly deserves a win in several catagories.
Why can't we vote on the VR category? (boo!)
Porco wrote:
Agreed. Who would you give it to? Nominations?
I'm probably missing something obvious (EDIT: Mario Galaxy 2!) but honourable mentions: Xenoblade Chronicles X, DQ1+2 HD, Talos Principle. I haven't included Switch 2 Editions.
E33 all the way.
A pretty safe and predictable list of nominees tbh... E33 was always going to be nominated (and likely win) in a variety of the categories.
I'm kinda surprised to see Ghost of Yōtei pop up considering it's been such a strong year and GoY didn't really bring anything new to the table. I'm not knocking it, but in a year that brought us E33, KCD2, Death Stranding 2, Donkey Kong Bananza and so on, it'd be easy to see Yōtei not making the finalists.
@get2sammyb Any clue what the previous record is? Without checking, I'd assume TLOUP2 or Zelda BOTW.
edit: for the proper The Game Awards, not any other shows
edit #2: I can Google. The Last of Us Part II currently holds the record with 7 wins. God of War: Ragnarok and Baldur's Gate 3 are next up with 6 wins each.
E33 will realistically sweep most of these nominations. If Hades 2 was on PS, maybe I’d vote for it. But I have to wait for it.
There needs to be a category for best supporting performance & best remake/remaster. Performance award should be broken up into: Lead Performance & Supporting. There isn’t enough emphasis on the great voices behind these games. Seems like very simple and easy additions
@Dom_31 Exactly, I actually really like Ben Starr (he's a real humble guy), but he's role just didn't stick with me like Konatsu Kato's performance.
@AdamNovice the amount of Snubbs this year is horrendous. DS2 didn't even get any performance nominations, Troy Baker got a nomination for Indiana Jones but not Higgs 🤦🏾♂️ Not to mention Yotei
@orvisbean101 @get2sammyb TLOU2 I think with 7. Just checking.
Yes that's correct. God of War: Ragnarok 6, BG3 both had 6 wins
I can see E33 winning at least 7 of 10 noms EASILY. But I loved it.
Yooo my goat sonic crossworlds got 2 noms! Too bad it's unlikely to win cause those are usually the nintendo pity prizes lol
I can't really say much of the goty noms cause I've only played e33 and I don't really consider it my goty lol. I guess it's weird that kcd2 game is in, it kinda felt like it came and went tbh. As for e33, I hope it wins best score, but it definitely does not deserve best narrative
PushSquare Article tomorrow:
„For PlayStation Fans, There’s Only One Game to Win All Categories of The Game Awards“
DK Bananza is the best new game I've played this year
I'd go with Death Stranding 2 for the other categories it's in
Virtua Fighter 5 for best fighting game
Sonic Crossworlds over MKW for best racing/sport
Resident Evil Requiem for most anticipayed
And as usual, I've no idea who the content creators are
Whatever the record is for Most TGA Wins, E33 is going to break it.
@Bob_Tempura
I would be surprised to see GoY winning any award at all.
The least interesting Game Awards ever. If they're going to snub Sword of the Sea then I'm going to snub them.
Hopefully Silksong gets nothing
I guess that I have a good game in store with Clair Obscure: Expedition 33.
My game of the year has to KCD: 2 which has been such a perfect game being everything I wanted it to be and more.
There's just so many great games, just this year alone!
As a huge fan of Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 I now hate Expedition 33 and hope it loses everything. Then I'll change my mind when I finally get around to playing it myself. Such is the life we've chosen.
Am I the only one who hasn't played Expedition 33 yet? I'm not a fan of turn based combat at all, but I am really curious why does the game is so hyped? I wanted to try but the combat held me back
@dskatter I was thinking the same thing. DS2 would be my GotY if it hadn't been for CO33.
While i dont agree in any shape or form that Yotei is goty, it definetly shoudve been nominated.
As much as I liked Troy Baker in Indy his performance in DS2 was much better. If they chose that one he would have won but i feel its Ben Starrs for the taking now. Nothing against Starr he is great (should have been Mario)
@Oram77 When you're up against Ben Starr's and Jennifer English's performances in E33 its hard to get many votes.
@Tatarimokke Brother i absolutely hate turn based combat and id rather amputate some essencial organs than play any of the traditional JRPGs.
But holy excrement, E33 is absolutely amazing, its one of those games that is so good it transcends genre or preferences. Definetly give it a try, you just might be missing on the best game you ever played.
This list of GOTY contenders is a mirrow for gaming in 2025 (mobile excluded):
4 of 6 games are sequels, with 3 of them having relatively small evolutions and only KCD2 making a big step compared to KCD1.
Not only from that perspective, I find it sad the Indy wasn’t nominated for GOTY. An original and unique first-person action-adventure, with great visuals and acting, masterfully crafted.
It hits home now that the sort of games I play aren’t really the stuff the game awards wants to promote, and the stuff they promote rarely interests me at all.
@DennisReynolds that just means more people need to play Silent Hill f before voting.
@Tatarimokke I'm not a fan of turned based either but the dodging and parrying was the element that made it work for me. If that sounds appealing, there is a good chance you will enjoy.
Looks like I got to eat a little crow on this one, I admit. I was pretty darn sure Yotei would make the nomination list. Didn't think KCD2 would make the cut over it, so I was wrong there.
Really can’t fathom the largely unearned praise heaped on Expedition 33. It’s turn based, which gets major points in my book, and was competently written/scored, but the visual aesthetic and design language is hideously repugnant and I literally don’t give a crap about any of the characters. It’s a good game, and just a good game. Nothing more.
The other nominees in nearly every single category it’s up for a possible award in all outclass it in those respective ways. KCD2 is a better rpg. Yotei’s graphical style and presentation is infinitely superior. Death Stranding 2 had better game direction. More heart went into other indies like Silksong or Split Fiction. Better voiceover work in Indiana Jones.
E33 is as overhyped as Skyrim was (and is), and most of you people are out of your minds 😅
@AdamNovice Yotei wasn’t snubbed. There was just some better games released
Low key love that KCD2 got in over Yotei lol
@Veritas7Ax good to owning up to it
@get2sammyb More than Baldur's Gate 3 you reckon?
@Oram77 Look at this way it doesn't matter how good your performance is when you're in the same best acting category as Daniel Day Lewis for his performance in There Will Be Blood. She might be incredible in Silent Hills F but sadly she's up against Ben Starr and Jennifer English who gave the performance of their careers in E33.
Looks like the Expedition 33 guys may as well just host the show at this point
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been nominated for the most awards at any The Game Awards show. Ever. It's that good.
Deserves to be GOTY.
@UltimateOtaku91 Beat everyone to it. Expedition 33 will probably win anyway, but two Obsidian trainwrecks got in over Sky FC in Best RPG? What a joke!
@IntrepidWombat Exactly, also has a better metacritic rating and user scores than both of those games. But it's the same every time, this show also looks over the nicher games especially jrpgs. I wouldn't be surprised if E33 was made by an Japanese dev that it wouldn't get as much attention or nominations.
I have to admit I'm a little bit disappointed that Clair Obscur is also nominated for both indie categories. Of course, technically, it's correct, but it feels unnecessary considering the game is also up for the RPG category, which it is virtually guaranteed to win. It just makes those indie categories less interesting, it's simply going to win all of them.
Nothing against the game of course, it deserves all the awards it's going to get.
E33 is going to go down in history as the most overrated game of all time, I’m sorry to say. I liked the game, but the amount of praise the game received has just been way too much. There’s been plenty of other games that deserve credit this year and I just anticipate E33 will brush all that under the rug.
Finnaly finished E33 and still don't get any of the hype or why it's up for so many rewards. It was fine and that's about it
surprised people think Last Of Us season 2 was the best adaptation...
@Bob_Tempura
“Why can’t you vote on VR?”
Possibly because one of the games only released today and you can’t possibly have judged it GotY yet!
But probably because of other reasons.
Oh and my VR GotY is Hitman which is not on the list...boo!
No best audio design Nom for Cronos??? robbery
I know that Clair Obscur is going to clean up but that Split Fiction is not on the shortlist for GoTY staggers me. For me it covers so many bases in what makes gaming great from storytelling to graphics to sounds BUT most importantly a game that absolutely anyone can pick up and play regardless of age, gender, gaming ability and a game that rewards playing together. It is a game that will stick with me and my daughter for years to come; not just the game but the experience that we had as a team.
More co-op games like this please. Astrobot co-op would be amazing!!
Seems very harsh that neither of the two main fellas from KCD2 got a nomination for best performance. They are brilliant and there's a certain genuinely funny and idiosyncratic humour to the KCD games that you don't see too often.
Would rather play noughts and crosses than any turn based game but I can appreciate why people like E33 so much (though I don't think it should sweep the board). But Silksong? I just don't get it.
@UltimateOtaku91 Yeah, I concur, as it's excellent.
I think there is a very clear winner and I also think obscure will bag more than half of the awards this year
@old_gamer74 Realisitcally it would not have won had it been nominated, the competition is too stiff. What matters are the memories and I wholeheartedly agree with you on that point. I had a blast playing through it twice with my buddy and we even platinum'd it. Hazelight already received the honors for "It Takes Two" and Sandfall deserve this year's award.
@Fishmasterflex96 more like because Nintendo had to have one game in the run for ...reasons. I don't care about the game but Yotei has a lot of nominees in other categories so it really should have been there instead of Bananza.
@Nei bonanza just didn’t fit in a lot of the other categories. It didn’t have voice acting and platformers just kinda fell into action adventure games and there were other better action adventure games this year. But overall Bonanza more then earned its spot
Is Expedition 33 an indie game?
A game that has:
I don't know...
Best RPG didn't really give any others there a fighting chance against 33🤣🤣🤣
I'm surprised to see Shinobi got nominated for best action game. But the opponent looks tough with NG 4, Hades 2, Doom, and BF 6.
@Reyzore I didn't know Expedition 33 got funding from French govs. Definitely not an indie game.
I feeel like GTA6 shouldn't get a place for most anticipated when they miss deadlines and keep pushing the game back. Its just taking the spotlight away from other games that deserve it.
Wolverine, Witcher 4 and Requim are all big and even 007 could be good but I need to see more there.
I'm the minority here because i didn't like E33. I've played and finished the game and yet i thought the game wasn't that good. Presentation, voice acting, music are pretty good, but gameplay wasn't that good imo
I thought that the level design was confusing, and without a map i was wondering left and right to figure out where to go. The devs should've used the golden path philosophy here, imo. Not having a journal to track sidequests and additional information about the story was also a negative aspect for me, but by far my biggest complaint about this game is the combat. Camera positioning is awful sometimes. How the hell am i supposed to see when an enemy is about to attack me when the camera's behind Monoco's ass? And i just hated how sometimes the camera kept moving around when i was about to be attacked. I need to keep my focus on what's going on and the drunken effect from the camera isn't helping me
Another big complaint i have, which is very specific: the endgame. The endgame bosses are just a parry fest. You get bombarded by their attacks for almost a minute and then you attack and rinse and repeat. It gets boring and annoying really fast. Make a mistake in your timing and your whole team is wiped out. I dropped the game after doing almost all boss fights, with only 3 or 4 remaining. I was enjoying the game even with its flaws, but the whole parry bombardment pissed me off too much
All these issues turned this game from a solid 9 to a weak 6 for me. Definitely not my personal GOTY but i do understand why a lot of people enjoyed this game. And let me make this very clear, people: this is my opinion. I bought the game, i played it for more than 80h. I persevered. I can have a negative opinion without being treated like a troll, right? Right
@PuppetMaster E33 is definitely not an indie game by any means. It's the whole Dave The Diver situation again
@Fishmasterflex96 it could have been nominated for art direction, game direction, action/adventure game, audio design or best score but it didn't, so it really feels like a dutiful Nintendo checkmark more than anything.
Although Clair Obscure deserves most of the nominations, I am not a fan of the voice work performances nominations for the English version, in detriment to the original voice actors in French. I am not sure how the voices were recorded, but I imagine the French cast was more involved with the game director and the animations surely followed the French voice work, which, by the way, is excellent.
The GOTY nominees are all winners. People wondering about Yotei not being there, TGA takes Metacritic seriously if you haven't noticed, no game on that list is below 88. If anything they'd have to include MHWilds or Split Fiction, it's tough this year. Reason why Erdtree was controversially nominated GOTY last year with that 94 score.
@PuppetMaster
The problem is that Exp 33 is taking the place of an indie game that needs to be promoted... it seems like everyone clearly wants to give it as many awards as possible.
That, to me, is absurd.
@windxtravelerx It's nonsense... but could anyone with a brain think that Exp 33 is an indie game?!
A slot that could be filled by games that urgently need promotion...
One thing I I’m sure of after looking through the nominees and just the general vibe is I’m definitely going to skip this event and just read about it later. I just got my physical copy of the GameStop limited edition for Clair Obscur Expedition 33, and as soon as I get to a reasonable stopping point on Hades 2 (NSW), I’ll give it a go
@themightyant to be honest, i haven't played any of these releases so i'm not an expert on this... but I have followed the reviews and press around them. DQ1+2 HD, Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, final fantasy tactics - Ivalice Chronicles and to a lesser extent (due to poor performance and lack of optimization) Metal Gear Delta stood out to me the most. based on everything i have seen, i would award trails in the sky as the clear winner all things considered.
@Reyzore i totally agree with you. Ball X Pit could easily take E33 spot, for example, and there are a lot of other indie games that could get this slot. I feel bad for the indie devs...
Clair obscur expedition 33 for the win.word up son
E33 absolutely sweeping.
@somnambulance I'm sure there's people that feel The Dark Knight is overrated, The Godfather is overrated, Empire Strikes Back is overrated, Red Dead 2 is overrated, Baldur's Gate 3 is overrated, Moby Dick is overrated, The Lord Of The Rings is overrated and so on and so on. Doesn't change the fact their all masterpieces and will outlive us all.
@DennisReynolds I just don’t get it, and I think that’s what bugs me about the game, coupled with the overzealous praise the game has gotten. I played the game, thought it was maybe a 7/10, and felt that there were clear areas where the game just wasn’t a classic to me.
Another poster above mentioned the level design being borderline irritating, which I certainly agree with. Happy Console Gamer put up a final thoughts video this weekend and mentioned how exploration didn’t feel rewarding in the game as well. It felt like there should’ve been incentive to search in the nooks and crannies of the levels, but there wasn’t. I also agreed with HCG’s wife saying she had a love/hate relationship with the combat.
And as for the story, I thought it was fine, but certainly predictable and I didn’t grow attached to any of the characters. In fact, after that one thing happened, I was sort of hoping for a one-by-one thing, but obviously that didn’t happen.
I will say the music and art were incredible. I just feel like, man, did other people play the same game, you know? It doesn’t help that most of my friends have agreed with me that the game’s a 7/10. I’ve never, in flesh and blood, met someone that really liked this one, which feels weird. To compare with other games that dominated the landscape recently, BG3 and Elden Ring felt like games that literally everyone I knew played and loved.
I’ll say this as someone who played BG3 and couldn’t enjoy it because it was just a buggy mess for me. I know I had the fluke experience. That said, I totally understand why the game is a GotY tier game because I experienced the game tangentially through others. I didn’t enjoy KCD2, but I’d say that’s a GotY tier game for its depth, scope, and commitment to immersion. For E33, it was just good and that’s it. In fact, if not for the zeitgeist around it, I’d probably feel less critical than I do. But because of that zeitgeist, I feel more compelled to “get it,” when perhaps I should accept that I just don’t and maybe revisit it in ten years or something.
@Nei for art and game direction yes but not really action adventure. It was more so that previous years there weren’t enough higher rated action adventure games to fill out the category and this year it is.
@TheArt metacritic isn’t the end all be all but yes it’s generally the best indicator. Yotei is a great game but there have been a lot of great games.
I personally hope death stranding 2 wins an award, think expedition 33 is over rated, for an indie title , while good isnt goty material , though tbh there hasn't been a great deal of of decent games, just like last year when astrobot won it , the games industry is seriously lacking innovation imo. Too many remasters. Remakes. Im hoping once last gen finally gets killed off. It stops current gen being held back
@somnambulance We can't like everything. I remember when Skyfall released it was being called one of the best Bond films ever and that the villain in it is an all time great. Me? i thought Skyfall was awful, i thought Craig phoned it in and i thought the villain was a hammy Ledger Joker rip off. I'm clearly in the minority there but it is what it is.
@old_gamer74
I'd say Split Fiction's greatest strength is also it's greatest weakness. You need 2 players, so I will never get to play it as no one I know that games has an interest in playing it. Limits the audience that will vote for it.
In no way am I saying that it's a bad thing you need 2 people to play the game, just that it's a hurdle they have to overcome.
What's with the Ben Starr fascination? I thought he was bang average in both FFXVI and E33.
@Nei I love both games, but prefer Mario Kart by a hair….
@DennisReynolds I don’t quite know what it is that drives me nuts about E33. There’s something though. I’m not the biggest God of War fan either, and I’d say that GoW Ragnarok is about as good as E33, but Ragnarok doesn’t elicit the same type of “did I play the same game?” type of feeling E33 does. It’s strange to me. I sort of feel like I want to understand what others see in the game and it distances me further too.
Maybe it’s because I’m a Final Fantasy fan and a lot of the discourse early on with the game was contrasting it to that series when I prefer the direction FF has gone over the last couple years? Maybe that hit a nerve or something? I’m pulling out straws, I suppose.
For what it’s worth though, I can say that I can really understand what you’re talking about with Skyfall. I wouldn’t say it’s awful, but, to be frank, I’ve sort of lost interest in the Bond IP during the Craig era, despite being a big fan of the franchise in my youth. Outside the fantastic Casino Royale, honestly, the Craig era films one after the other all felt sort of bland to me and “phoned in” definitely feels like the accurate term. They don’t exactly feel like Bond to me, despite feeling like high budget espionage action films.
Nothing big enough for me. Indies were hit and miss and just 'happened to release in 2025'.
2024/2025 were forgettable to me, so I have nothing to say.
Echoes of the End was fun of the water rising or moving objects, 'safe skill trees', but good puzzles/pacing of combat, puzzles and talking scenes, but even then as much as it worked out with it's Enhanced Edition.
@windxtravelerx True and at least Dave the Diver devs fully admitted that their game is not indie. But i didn't see Expedition 33 devs do the same. I wonder why...
@Reyzore Fully agreed with you 🤝
@Jade37 this is a very fair point
@ro-kurorai i do hear you
Expedition 33, followed closely by Arc raiders.... By far.
Ds2, and ghost of tsushima is laughable.
The fact that Arc raiders didn't even get a nod in the sound department is frankly pathetic and already tanks the credibility of the game awards beyond the marketing arm it truly is.
@UltimateOtaku91
Strange indeed as a rpg.
Likewise, I thought I would see CitizenSleeper 2
@dskatter
If this community is a good représentation, then, yes, it appeaes it will win every category it's in lol.
@somnambulance
It's very much ok and reassuring that someone has a différent opinion than the "masses" (no offensé intended, I loved E33)
For exemple, I don't get FF7's massive love or Hans Zimmer.
But that's ok, I don't mind people loving and enjoying them.
We can't all be wired the same way and that's for the better
I the only one who did not like the story of exp33 much? It had so much promise, but the twist did nothing for me.
E33 is ugly as sin technically, and not even that impressive on a purely art direction basis either. The fact that it's being upvoted to high heavens in that category, above DS2 and Yotei, shows that gamers in general have poor taste.
@rockodoodle MK will always be more popular but I have to say it’s much easier to get online and play the game with Crossworlds and they are having a lot of updates and events
It's very Clair that Clair Expedition 33 is washing everything up this year
Arc, E33 was good but Arc, not that it matters I hate these awards.
I´ll be very surprised if Clair Obscure doesnt scoop most awards its nominated in, despite some good competition its just in a class of its own in so many categories!
@Fishmasterflex96 Lol I haven't even played Yotei, pointing it out to people who don't get why it's not up for goty.
@get2sammyb
One might say it could become "the greatest expedition in history"
@NeonTiger I have to disagree with both of those points. I wasn’t sure what you meant by technically ugly? I bought it at launch and performance was silky smooth, it wasn’t 60 fps with ray tracing, but it’s an Indy game.
There are issues with its pace, characters that will take a while to grow on you, music that’s good but can be unobtrusive.
But objectively speaking, the art direction is striking - it’s a unique world, memorable and diverse locations, with things I’ve not seen before in any other game.
Subjectively speaking, it’s one of the most strikingly beautiful games I’ve played.
@species you just sold me on E33. 🍻
Give Clair Obscur every award it got nominated for. This is a generational game.
@Kairuuu Indeed. Yes, 12 nominations is a new record. Though it can only win a maximum of 10 awards, as 3 are in the same category for best performance. This is the same number of categories / potential wins as TLOU2 (11 noms, 2 for best performance, 7 wins) and God of War: Ragnarok (11 noms, 2 for best performance, 6 wins). It will be interesting to see how it does against those games.
Personally as a huge E33 fan I can see it winning at least 7 of those categories easily.
It'll be Clair Obscur easily although think it gets the underdog vote as the gameplay really wasn't all that. The soundtrack was quality and the story too but that damn map was ropey to put it mildly. Still looking forward to the 8 CD soundtrack in Feb though and maybe a new game plus as they've patched a lot since debut.
Cronos should have been up there not sure why it isn't?
I haven´t played E33 yet, but it certainly looks like it´s gonna be their night - both from the polls and the general vibe I get from the internet at large over it. Plenty of people here say they found it to be only ok, or didn´t like it at all, but the general consensus seems to be that it was quite special to a lot of people. I´ll have a look for myself when it gets a decent sale.
My hope is that Silksong gets a proper nod. Despite the years of waiting, the personal hype and a slightly unhinged fanbase, the game fired on all cylinders when it finally arrived; price, music, art, design, content. It was all on point in my book, and that makes it my personal GOTY (in a year where I didn´t really play a lot of the new games, tbf, but still).
"Content Creator of the Year" is a category that gives me the ick. I don´t think "The Oscars of Videogames" should spend time celebrating and honouring what fan with a YouTube-account and a camera had the loudest opinion on the games that came out this year. Should we also give an award to the best TikTok, or the sickest lootbox-pull from 2025?
My peronal GOTY is "Shinobi: Art of Vengeance".
With "Ninja Gaiden Ragebound" in second place and "Doom Dark Ages", in third place.
Though i still think that "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33" deserves to win.
Prime example, that you don't need $300 million budgets, to make epic games.
Clair Obscur is going to mop up in most categories and the dev honestly deserves it. So much attention to detail in that game it’s essentially a reference game for me rather than the cut and paste approach we’ve seen in the last few years.
Expedition will win GOTY and other categories... that's for sure.
----But there are serious errors in these nominations----
@Reyzore Troy Baker is already nominated for his performance as Indiana Jones. I don't know if there's precedence for nominating the same performer for two different roles in the same year, but I'd consider that a bit overkill to be honest.
@Ainu20 So... at least let Troy win... so this doesn't look so bad.
My top games of the year are:
KCD 2
DK Bananza
Rune Factory Guardians of Azuma
I enjoyed Yotei, and that is probably in my top 5, depending on how well Metroid Prime 4 plays out.
Also, EE33 is a good game, but it's overrated. The story, writing, and music were great, but the game design was fairly poor despite a catchy dodge/parry system loop for souls-like fans (Story mode was unbalanced).
I've just finished E33 and I thought it was...ok?
In fairness, I went straight on to it from finishing GoW Ragnarok so I'd gotten used to an unreasonably high level of quality for comparison. Visually, E33 was just ok - yes the environments were dreamy and beautiful, but they lacked any real foreground detail, and after a while, running through them all felt a bit samey. The graphics technically were just ok, even on performance mode it felt like the game was struggling to render, and lip-synching was noticeably poor. Gameplay never really evolved or added anything new throughout the entire game.
While the over-arching story felt fresh, I didn't feel hugely for the characters, other than Maelle, and their storytelling wasn't particularly developed throughout, other than the few 'big reveal' moments. Comparing it to GoW 2, for example, where the story and character development emerged from and during the gameplay, I didn't have the inclination to think "ok, I'd like to press X to learn more about this character" round the campfire in E33. I also found the picto/lumina system to be detractory - are 193 pictos really necessary?! I spent a silly amount of time flicking though menus and equipping/switching the damn things, and resetting skill points than felt necessary.
On the plus side, soundtrack was perfection, and I like that each character had their own unique attack mechanism although I found some of them a bit confusing. And yes, I could have done with an map marker system on the main continent map, and a quest log of some kind - not Ubisoft level of handholding, but a Morrowind style journal or something would have been useful as I often found some areas that were locked off, with no idea how or when or why they would open up.
I can certainly feel the love the developer had for the title, but feel the hype train went a bit overboard with this one.
Best art direction is Hell is Us, which is not nominated. Sad.
Here comes the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 backlash. It was a good game, but c'mon with all these nominations.
@dskatter hope so just for how good the music will be
ark raiders should have been nominated for sound design
ultimately these awards are pointless the people that vote on these dont even need to play the game at least with the bafta's awards they do
Well if E33 doesn't win GOTY then there will be alot of unhappy people. Me personally I though DS2 was my GOTY but I expect E33 to win.
Megabonk devs has withdrawn from TGA. It wasn't their debut game.
https://www.engadget.com/gaming/megabonk-has-withdrawn-from-the-game-awards-212822746.html
The amount of games I would want to play that came out this year is insane.
MGS3
DS2
E33
GoY
Indiana Jones
Trails in the sky remake
PS4: Oblivion
Hades II
Dispatch
The Seance of Black Manor
The Outer Worlds 2
Hitman VR
Avowed
@Nei I like them both for different reasons. Sonic has more depth and for now more content to look forward to…. MKW is cleaner, more polished and I like the characters better. I like MKW just a little better but I can’t say anything bad about Sonic.
