I’m just glad most of the comments use the phrase “Day One” or simultaneous release rather than “day and date,” which always irked me. “Day and date” always struck me as a corporate marketing phrase that would result in over promising and under delivering
@Drago201 Yeah, when Sony was eating Nintendo‘s lunch in the late 90s and early 2000s they got creative by launching the Wii and DS. Xbox is running a distant but respectable third place, and they hit the panic button.
@BAMozzy This is actually a nice explanation, although we still don't know how much is the RoG Xbox Ally going to cost, and how it will review. What I'm less clear on is that why that strategy will work (consult + PC + a few million handhelds for sale) when this generation is not working as well for them. Yes, I know gaming revenue is up despite hardware sales are down, but they spent $70 billion on Activision to get there. It was not free revenue.
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare I think this would be bad to kill the brand name loyalty that is Xbox. I have a gaming PC, and I could care less that it boots to Microsoft Windows 11. PC gamers are more into brands like Valve, Razer, ROG, NVIDIA, SteelSeries, etc. "Microsoft" does have have the same cachet.
@liathach So basically "Xbox" will be X without the "box," or "X" -> except that name is used. How about we call them "SegaX," since they will be the like post-Dreamcast Sega? Don't get me wrong, I like Sega, but they are not in the hardware business anymore. I'm sure if they wanted to, they could ask Asus to make a Sega ROGAlly Dreamcast edition with a button that launches a Sega app loader, but would anyone care?
@HonestHick I do agree with the concept being neat, but once again I ask isn't a "A PC that is a console with plug and play and a controller Ui" simply restating what consitutes an Xbox Series X? What makes the next gen different?
@GeeEssEff Yes I don't see what Xbox is trying to do by trying to glob onto the existing PC gaming hardward landscape. Yes they all run Microsoft Windows 10/11, but the gaming division doesn't really have much to do with that, and they hardly need their input for the likes of Steam and GOG to run just fine, thank you.
@PuppetMaster I guess so. I own both PS5 and Switch. If it was easy to cultivate brand loyalty, all companies would do it. Sometimes you have to give credit where credit is due.
@PuppetMaster I think people are factoring in the "launch window" meaning what was announced such as Donkey Kong, Pokemon, Metroid, Hyrule Warriors, etc versus what is available on day 1. Some people also did not like the PS5 design. It was polarizing. Nobody is calling Switch 2 "ugly." I don't like the trend in physical to digital either, but that was well underway on PC then PS/ Xbox, and Nintendo is catching up to the inevitable, I guess.
@RoomWithaMoose It is always fun to look at total console sales, and come up with reasons why. The consensus on PS2 is indeed the cheapish DVD functionality helped boost sales. Switch had the pandemic plus a seamless merging of their decades long home and portable lines. DS came in before smart phones and tablets really got popular. There are your top 3 of all time. Some of these factors cannot be replicated.
@Sarxion I also factored in the idea that I'd rather get in now than wait six months and have a USA price increase due to tariffs. The idea of waiting for an aging technology to go on sale won't apply to Switch 2 for quite some time, if ever. Switch 1 is still at 2017 MSRP, and it sold more in Japan this week than PS5 Digital Edition and all versions of Xbox.
@Sarxion @Medic_alert This was predicted last year, but essentially as long as Xbox is on current gen, then the Series S has to be included in all of that console's releases. With some effort, you can get a comparable (not identical) version ported to Switch 2. We will see in a couple of years though the PS6/ NextXbox surpass Switch 2 by quite a margin.... perhaps putting on the pressure for Switch 2 OLED to bump up the internals?
I couldn’t do it after the first 45 minutes or so. I just came back and read an article for the rest. Nowadays between my wallet and my backlog I’m actually not as upset when there are smaller number of games of interest.
I thought it was "okay." The only ones I seem interested in, most likely would be getting for Nintendo Switch: FF Tactics, Everybody's Golf, and perhaps James Bond. The only PS5 game I want is Ghost of Yotei, but we already knew about that. I beat the 3DS version of Metal Gear last year, so I'm not ready to jump back in to that... though it looks awesome.
I mostly play on Switch OLED handheld and some docked. From my viewing distance, the base PS5 looks great already, so I don't see the need for the Pro. I am also one of those people that doesn't really mind 30 vs 60 FPS, for whatever reason (maybe it's genetic) : I usually go for graphics mode if given a choice.
I posted on the other website as well and just wanted to relay that I wish this was Morrowind, which is more in need of modernization and was overall my favorite Elder Scroll
I completed one playthrough in September, and gave it an 8/10 (Great). I had issues with the control scheme on PS5, some of the pathfinding was annoying, and the 3rd act started to drag. I wasn't really into the main plot for some reason. It is the kind of game that may get better over time, and I see myself playing it again, and probably double dipping on PC when it gets sub $30. My GOTY for 2024 was Unicord Overlord (9/10), and the best older game I completed last year was Persona 5 Royal (10/10), so I am into these types of games.
I mostly agree with this. I have a nice 4K TV, but when I'm playing Blu-rays at 1080p vs my handful of 4K discs, from my viewing distance it is not much different.
RDR2 on PS4 looks still looks great. I hope RDR2 comes out on Switch 2. They already have RDR.
I would say the jump from Switch 1 to Switch 2 looks to be greater than the jump from PS4 to base PS5 in roughly the same span of years. PS5 Pro is a greater leap, technically in terms of all the numbers, but I feel it is at the point of diminishing returns in terms of gameplay to additional price ratio.
I wanted to preorder the 500 USD bundle which is on hold. It’s not cheap by any means, but that’s the price for early adopters. My son and I looked at the alternative PS 5 Pro, but even with adding the Switch 2 bundle and then Donkey Kong when it releases July, it is still quite a bit less than the Pro, and we agreed we would get more enjoyment out of the Nintendo. In terms of the 80 USD precedent for physical Mario Kart, it remains to be seen if future DLC will be paid, because the prior version with all the bonus tracks was even more than 80 USD. Nintendo products tend to hold their value longer than comparable products for various reasons, including company policy.
All of these people are saying how they have little or no interest in this game, but I think if you’re commenting on a gaming website, then you will have at least a modicum of interest
Everyone seems to forget their miles-long backlogs when they want a ton of new things at launch. This is a lot for 2025, and then they have multiple years for mainline Mario, Zelda, Smash, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, Pokemon, Kirby and the like.
I got Tales of Arise - Beyond the Dawn Edition physical from playasia, just in time for the digital edition to go on sale, so we'll see if I double dip.
Our PlayStation and large TV is in the basement two floors down from the bedrooms, so I find it is more convenient to keep the portal in the bedroom to play at night. I don’t think I could’ve completed Baldur‘s Gate 3 without it.
I finally got around to Tales of Arise which is the first game I haven’t dropped after a couple hours. It’s got just enough of story and gameplay to keep me invested. I’ll probably finish the main story but unlikely to purchase the DLC unless by the time I get to the end I feel like there’s more story to tell.
I hope to finish Baldurs Gate 3 this weekend. I am about 150 hours in. Act III has been stop and start, but it's hard to get into a new game until I complete this one. On Switch I'm going through a series of eshop demos to see what interests me.
I decided to sell some of the more valuable but abandoned physical games from my backlog in order to make room for future games. Still on Act Iii of Baldur’s Gate 3 with fatigue setting in, and for casual /portable play it’s Dave the Diver on Switch. I also tried Balatro on Apple Arcade, although I already played it to death earlier this summer.
I played 13 Sentinels last year, so when this game was announced, I ordered the collectors edition. I rarely play new releases mostly I go for classics but this one was 100+ hours on release.
I currently have a PS5 in the 2nd floor bedroom, but am thinking of relocating it to the basement theater room after I upgrade from an old 720p projector to an 85" 4K TV. I am considering getting the Portal to store in the bedroom for late night or quick sessions without having to trek down two floors. I would like to see how it reviews on a mesh WiFi set up with a bit of distance, if it is laggy.
It fits a niche and offers a simpler and cheaper set up for a 2nd gaming location, rather than getting a 2nd PS5.
