Re: Jun 2025 USA Sales: PS4's Record Launch Month Stomped by Switch 2

kmtrain83

@mrbone
I ordered DKB for $63 from Costco. It reviewed well, and it’s fairly lengthy, so I don’t have a problem with it.
What I find baffling is the whole $80 ripping off the bandage occurred with Mario Kart World, and yet Nintendo was perfectly willing to sell it for a $50 digital add on price bundled with the console. I bet the majority of people got into it that way. So why did they need to stir things up with the unbundled $80 price point? They could have just left it at $70, and avoided a great deal of negativity. Or maybe announced the $80 would include future free DLC.

@BAMozzy
So I guess Microsoft really will buy Nintendo in about 15-20 years, since that is the only way the latter can survive. And Sony will probably downgrade their gaming division they way they did with so many product lines from the 1990s, such as Walkmans, Handicams, CRT TV, Vaio laptop. The way the movie industry is going, they'll probably drop their Pictures and Blu ray players eventually. Everything will be cloud and AI, whether we like it or not.

@RBMango
Maybe someone with more business background can answer but how is the $70 billion acquisition structured in terms of yearly profit and loss. Like I know it’s a big amount, but it also gets added to Microsoft net worth so it’s not like completely in the negative column.

They do seem to have run into an issue where the user base cannot turn a profit on AAA exclusives anymore, which is sad.

Re: The Next Xbox Is a PC, So What Does That Mean for PS6?

@BAMozzy
This is actually a nice explanation, although we still don't know how much is the RoG Xbox Ally going to cost, and how it will review. What I'm less clear on is that why that strategy will work (consult + PC + a few million handhelds for sale) when this generation is not working as well for them. Yes, I know gaming revenue is up despite hardware sales are down, but they spent $70 billion on Activision to get there. It was not free revenue.

Re: The Next Xbox Is a PC, So What Does That Mean for PS6?

@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare
I think this would be bad to kill the brand name loyalty that is Xbox. I have a gaming PC, and I could care less that it boots to Microsoft Windows 11. PC gamers are more into brands like Valve, Razer, ROG, NVIDIA, SteelSeries, etc. "Microsoft" does have have the same cachet.

Re: The Next Xbox Is a PC, So What Does That Mean for PS6?

kmtrain83

@liathach
So basically "Xbox" will be X without the "box," or "X" -> except that name is used. How about we call them "SegaX," since they will be the like post-Dreamcast Sega? Don't get me wrong, I like Sega, but they are not in the hardware business anymore. I'm sure if they wanted to, they could ask Asus to make a Sega ROGAlly Dreamcast edition with a button that launches a Sega app loader, but would anyone care?

Re: The Next Xbox Is a PC, So What Does That Mean for PS6?

kmtrain83

@GeeEssEff
Yes I don't see what Xbox is trying to do by trying to glob onto the existing PC gaming hardward landscape. Yes they all run Microsoft Windows 10/11, but the gaming division doesn't really have much to do with that, and they hardly need their input for the likes of Steam and GOG to run just fine, thank you.

Re: Switch 2 Absolutely Destroys PS2's Launch Record in Japan

kmtrain83

@PuppetMaster
I think people are factoring in the "launch window" meaning what was announced such as Donkey Kong, Pokemon, Metroid, Hyrule Warriors, etc versus what is available on day 1. Some people also did not like the PS5 design. It was polarizing. Nobody is calling Switch 2 "ugly." I don't like the trend in physical to digital either, but that was well underway on PC then PS/ Xbox, and Nintendo is catching up to the inevitable, I guess.

Re: Switch 2 Absolutely Destroys PS2's Launch Record in Japan

@RoomWithaMoose
It is always fun to look at total console sales, and come up with reasons why. The consensus on PS2 is indeed the cheapish DVD functionality helped boost sales. Switch had the pandemic plus a seamless merging of their decades long home and portable lines. DS came in before smart phones and tablets really got popular. There are your top 3 of all time. Some of these factors cannot be replicated.

Re: Switch 2 Absolutely Destroys PS2's Launch Record in Japan

kmtrain83

@Sarxion
I also factored in the idea that I'd rather get in now than wait six months and have a USA price increase due to tariffs. The idea of waiting for an aging technology to go on sale won't apply to Switch 2 for quite some time, if ever. Switch 1 is still at 2017 MSRP, and it sold more in Japan this week than PS5 Digital Edition and all versions of Xbox.

Re: Switch 2 Absolutely Destroys PS2's Launch Record in Japan

kmtrain83

@Sarxion @Medic_alert
This was predicted last year, but essentially as long as Xbox is on current gen, then the Series S has to be included in all of that console's releases. With some effort, you can get a comparable (not identical) version ported to Switch 2. We will see in a couple of years though the PS6/ NextXbox surpass Switch 2 by quite a margin.... perhaps putting on the pressure for Switch 2 OLED to bump up the internals?

Re: Poll: How Would You Rate State of Play for June 2025?

kmtrain83

I thought it was "okay." The only ones I seem interested in, most likely would be getting for Nintendo Switch: FF Tactics, Everybody's Golf, and perhaps James Bond. The only PS5 game I want is Ghost of Yotei, but we already knew about that. I beat the 3DS version of Metal Gear last year, so I'm not ready to jump back in to that... though it looks awesome.

Re: Talking Point: What Do You Think of the PS5 Pro, Six Months Later?

kmtrain83

I mostly play on Switch OLED handheld and some docked. From my viewing distance, the base PS5 looks great already, so I don't see the need for the Pro. I am also one of those people that doesn't really mind 30 vs 60 FPS, for whatever reason (maybe it's genetic) : I usually go for graphics mode if given a choice.

Re: Opinion: Baldur's Gate 3 Was Already a 10/10, But Updates Have Made It an All-Time Masterpiece

kmtrain83

I completed one playthrough in September, and gave it an 8/10 (Great). I had issues with the control scheme on PS5, some of the pathfinding was annoying, and the 3rd act started to drag. I wasn't really into the main plot for some reason. It is the kind of game that may get better over time, and I see myself playing it again, and probably double dipping on PC when it gets sub $30. My GOTY for 2024 was Unicord Overlord (9/10), and the best older game I completed last year was Persona 5 Royal (10/10), so I am into these types of games.

Re: Nintendo Is Displaying Hubris Which Would Make Even PS3 Era Sony Blush

kmtrain83

I wanted to preorder the 500 USD bundle which is on hold. It’s not cheap by any means, but that’s the price for early adopters. My son and I looked at the alternative PS 5 Pro, but even with adding the Switch 2 bundle and then Donkey Kong when it releases July, it is still quite a bit less than the Pro, and we agreed we would get more enjoyment out of the Nintendo. In terms of the 80 USD precedent for physical Mario Kart, it remains to be seen if future DLC will be paid, because the prior version with all the bonus tracks was even more than 80 USD. Nintendo products tend to hold their value longer than comparable products for various reasons, including company policy.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 567

kmtrain83

I finally got around to Tales of Arise which is the first game I haven’t dropped after a couple hours. It’s got just enough of story and gameplay to keep me invested. I’ll probably finish the main story but unlikely to purchase the DLC unless by the time I get to the end I feel like there’s more story to tell.
