@Rich33
This is quite fascinating. I wonder if this headache phenomenon is similar to the seizure warning they place at the beginning of some visual media.
This is the only Metal Gear I ever played and it was on 3DS couple years ago. So as much as I liked it, I don’t think I want to revisit it anytime soon. The boss fights were really fun. I went in blind without using any kind of instructions and didn’t know you can change your weapon until halfway into my playthrough.. I was trying to beat the mini boss with a pee shooter
OK I will check out this Tom's guy. I'm skeptical that newer tech will be cheaper than older tech though. Usually it is the other way around. I guess we see something like that with Macbook Air those have lowered their base price, or at least not gone up much with inflation.
This pretty much ends my slight interest in getting a PS5 Pro. If I didn't pull the trigger last year when the had some sales going on, it's not worth it now.
I had this on my Switch wish list forever. I finally got it used, beat it once, and sold it. I give about 7.5 score. I had my time with it, but did not feel like I would do another playthrough. Maybe years down the line, I could revisit this on PC if it was like $10-15. It certainly has some neat unique map designs, but I found aspects of the combat frustrating, and the characters didn't do much for me.
I'll load Unicorn Overlord just to see how it compares, but after spending 150 hours on it last year with Switch 1, I don't have time for another playthrough. It might be my first chance to try the Atelier series though.
I assumed by all these comments, although no one stated as such, that eventually, Sony will make televisions which include the PlayStation platform built-in without a separate box? Without that I cannot see console being entirely replaced by PC or mobile because those do not connect as well to an 85 inch TV with seven speakers and a comfy couch. I guess it’s possible that you could cast from my PC or phone to the TV but the technology would have to be seamless..
@11001100110zero I see this playing out with my three teenagers. Most of their time is Roblox Minecraft Valorant Fortnite on PC, which they also use for schoolwork. You really can’t be a student nowadays and not have a PC. You don’t need to have a console though. A generation ago these needs would’ve been satisfied by consoles. I think that’s why we see globally PC gaming is ramping up, console is flat, but both are overshadowed by casual mobile, which I don’t think is the same audience as the people on this website..
@DTfearTheBEARD Sometimes I think about selling my physical library and converting the ones I like to digital just to be ready, but I guess there’s no rush to doing so. The PS Portal experience is hampered by having to walk down two flights of stairs to change the disc.
@Faultandfracture Yes, and if it is without a disc drive, then it’s not really backwards compatible for my physical library. As such, I’d probably just stick with PS5 until I get tired of it and then cross over to PC gaming
@QwarktasticLombax GTA 6 base price announcement could be a watershed moment. I’m still not sure why Nintendo chose Mario Kart World as their first $80 base game when they were perfectly willing to “discount“ it to $50 in the launch day console bundle. Tears of the Kingdom is also $80 but again the Switch 1 edition was already $70 and for the Nintendo online members the upgrade is free.
I will try to finish Fire Emblem (GBA), and try out Romancing SaGa 2 on Switch. On PS5, I may try to make progress on Tales of Arise, or go back to Ghost of Tsushima, which I started but dropped fairly early on. Xbox Series S... just turn on and admire the UI, but unlikely to play anything of substance.
@ZeroSum I think it is fair to criticize the submission that broke the rules by using AI, without judging or even knowing the person's intentions or level of innate talent. We all see what is happening around us with computers replacing humans, and we have a right to voice our concerns when we see it manifest in such a brazen manner. The more I read about it, the more I see "scraping" as theft of intellectual property on an industrial scale. Unfortunately, since "the Chinese will do it anyway," then we all have to follow. So goes humanity.
@RoomWithaMoose As a Gen X-er, I assumed it was over after ROTS in 2005. I did watch some Clone Wars, but a cartoon cannot sustain an IP. I was happy when I heard they were making a sequel triology. Since then, it has been decent, with some great output including Mandarlorian season 1/2 and Andor, along with a lot of filler. The SW Jedi games were pretty good, compared to other titles that came out those years. In the end, nothing is perfect, so judge for yourself. Personally, I didn't jive with the SW Outlaws demo on PS5, but I may give it another look it it runs well on Switch 2.
@wildcat_kickz They have been chasing the OT high since the 1980s. Even George Lucas couldn't replicate the originals' success when he made the prequels. That being said, if it is done right, there is a lot of room in this IP for 8/10 experiences, and occasionally you get a masterpiece like Andor. You just have to suffer with the 6-7/10 filler.
@mrbone I ordered DKB for $63 from Costco. It reviewed well, and it’s fairly lengthy, so I don’t have a problem with it. What I find baffling is the whole $80 ripping off the bandage occurred with Mario Kart World, and yet Nintendo was perfectly willing to sell it for a $50 digital add on price bundled with the console. I bet the majority of people got into it that way. So why did they need to stir things up with the unbundled $80 price point? They could have just left it at $70, and avoided a great deal of negativity. Or maybe announced the $80 would include future free DLC.
@BAMozzy
So I guess Microsoft really will buy Nintendo in about 15-20 years, since that is the only way the latter can survive. And Sony will probably downgrade their gaming division they way they did with so many product lines from the 1990s, such as Walkmans, Handicams, CRT TV, Vaio laptop. The way the movie industry is going, they'll probably drop their Pictures and Blu ray players eventually. Everything will be cloud and AI, whether we like it or not.
I may actually check out Bluey with my daughter. I was holding out for the Switch 2 Cyberpunk to go on sale since it is full edition on cart, and I don't think I can finish that if there is not a portable option. That being said, I don't finish most games that I start
@SeaDaVie I nearly did the impulse buy last Black Friday when they had an Amazon Fire Stick bundled with an Xbox controller for a discount. I figured I would experiment on the Fire Stick and if it was terrible, at least I have the extra controller, which I eventually got later by itself.
@RBMango Maybe someone with more business background can answer but how is the $70 billion acquisition structured in terms of yearly profit and loss. Like I know it’s a big amount, but it also gets added to Microsoft net worth so it’s not like completely in the negative column.
They do seem to have run into an issue where the user base cannot turn a profit on AAA exclusives anymore, which is sad.
@somnambulance Yeah, I’m not sure what to believe anymore either they’re making record-breaking revenue or they’re going out of business. It can’t be both.
@SeaDaVie That is a very interesting slide. I’ve never seen that, but I wasn’t keeping up back then. This may be the wrong forum to ask, but who are these cloud-first gamers? Does anyone actually favor cloud, or is it something that the industry wants to force the issue?
I’m just glad most of the comments use the phrase “Day One” or simultaneous release rather than “day and date,” which always irked me. “Day and date” always struck me as a corporate marketing phrase that would result in over promising and under delivering
@Drago201 Yeah, when Sony was eating Nintendo‘s lunch in the late 90s and early 2000s they got creative by launching the Wii and DS. Xbox is running a distant but respectable third place, and they hit the panic button.
@BAMozzy This is actually a nice explanation, although we still don't know how much is the RoG Xbox Ally going to cost, and how it will review. What I'm less clear on is that why that strategy will work (consult + PC + a few million handhelds for sale) when this generation is not working as well for them. Yes, I know gaming revenue is up despite hardware sales are down, but they spent $70 billion on Activision to get there. It was not free revenue.
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare I think this would be bad to kill the brand name loyalty that is Xbox. I have a gaming PC, and I could care less that it boots to Microsoft Windows 11. PC gamers are more into brands like Valve, Razer, ROG, NVIDIA, SteelSeries, etc. "Microsoft" does have have the same cachet.
@liathach So basically "Xbox" will be X without the "box," or "X" -> except that name is used. How about we call them "SegaX," since they will be the like post-Dreamcast Sega? Don't get me wrong, I like Sega, but they are not in the hardware business anymore. I'm sure if they wanted to, they could ask Asus to make a Sega ROGAlly Dreamcast edition with a button that launches a Sega app loader, but would anyone care?
@HonestHick I do agree with the concept being neat, but once again I ask isn't a "A PC that is a console with plug and play and a controller Ui" simply restating what consitutes an Xbox Series X? What makes the next gen different?
@GeeEssEff Yes I don't see what Xbox is trying to do by trying to glob onto the existing PC gaming hardward landscape. Yes they all run Microsoft Windows 10/11, but the gaming division doesn't really have much to do with that, and they hardly need their input for the likes of Steam and GOG to run just fine, thank you.
@PuppetMaster I guess so. I own both PS5 and Switch. If it was easy to cultivate brand loyalty, all companies would do it. Sometimes you have to give credit where credit is due.
@PuppetMaster I think people are factoring in the "launch window" meaning what was announced such as Donkey Kong, Pokemon, Metroid, Hyrule Warriors, etc versus what is available on day 1. Re: Switch 2 Absolutely Destroys PS2's Launch Record in Japan
@RoomWithaMoose
It is always fun to look at total console sales, and come up with reasons why. The consensus on PS2 is indeed the cheapish DVD functionality helped boost sales. Switch had the pandemic plus a seamless merging of their decades long home and portable lines. DS came in before smart phones and tablets really got popular. There are your top 3 of all time. Some of these factors cannot be replicated.
Re: Switch 2 Absolutely Destroys PS2's Launch Record in Japan
@Sarxion
I also factored in the idea that I'd rather get in now than wait six months and have a USA price increase due to tariffs. The idea of waiting for an aging technology to go on sale won't apply to Switch 2 for quite some time, if ever. Switch 1 is still at 2017 MSRP, and it sold more in Japan this week than PS5 Digital Edition and all versions of Xbox.
Re: Switch 2 Absolutely Destroys PS2's Launch Record in Japan

This was predicted last year, but essentially as long as Xbox is on current gen, then the Series S has to be included in all of that console's releases. With some effort, you can get a comparable (not identical) version ported to Switch 2. We will see in a couple of years though the PS6/ NextXbox surpass Switch 2 by quite a margin.... perhaps putting on the pressure for Switch 2 OLED to bump up the internals?
