Atlus celebrated the first anniversary of Metaphor: ReFantazio overnight, and quite frankly, we're glad that we didn't stay up until 5am to watch its 15-minute video.
As is always the case with stuff like this, some eager fans were expecting a big announcement. DLC, an expanded re-release, a Nintendo Switch 2 port... But no, the only thing they got was a new digital edition of the game.
The 'Guidebook Edition' is due out early next year, and it'll include the RPG's official strategy guide, artbook, and soundtrack — all in digital form.

Said strategy guide isn't the full thing, either — it's a 'condensed' version of the physical product.
To be fair, if you've already bought Metaphor's Atlus 35th Anniversary Digital Deluxe Edition (phew), then you'll get the aforementioned strategy guide for free. A nice little bonus, we suppose.
For what it's worth, the video also covers messages of gratitude from both the development team and the game's English voice cast. It's at least nice to see such a quality game get some additional time in the spotlight.

Probably disappointing news for Nintendo fans, it would be an ideal game for the handheld format.
I'm selfishly happy because I finally got round to starting this game last week, then saw the news that there was going to be an event, was convinced the 'Royal' edition was going to be announced and thinking I'd wasted money on a now incomplete version.
The official guidebook is almost perfect! Lots of information and strategies - they don’t do it like these anymore.
Would love some kind of free form dlc post ending - I something like the Answer in P3FES. It really would match the game.
I'm really glad there isn't ReRefantazio.
I am still waiting for rerefantazio, I don't care. I won't play it until then.
No point having a Switch 2 release, it will be another key card abomination
Well persona 6 won’t be coming out anytime soon. So they definitely got plenty of time to do much more with the game if they really want to🤔
@Foxhound A GCK doesn’t take away a game being on Switch. Many, many people buy digital with no complaints, so saying it shouldn’t even be on the platform because of a GCK is asinine.
Classic Atlus.
@Can-You-Believe-Sith p4 remake comes out next year maybe so they busy
Slimy but still better than coming out with a "Refantazio: Royal Edition"
Honestly I'd rather have nothing new than Atlus' usual "Here's an improved version of the game you bought with a large chunk of brand new content, sold at full price with no upgrade path".
@Dalamar Me too, that's my cousin's name.
@tselliot son of your uncle who works at Atlus?
To be perfectly frank, I gave up on Atlus games the day Shin Megami 5 Vengeance came out as a full price release without the courtesy of an upgrade path for early adopters who had been waiting for the original release for the better part of a decade.
Then Metaphor comes out and it's a full price game also - at the new higher price point of it's day, at that - and remained out of my reach enough to not tempt me back.
So far I'm not seeing any reason to forgive them and play the games they make, at least, not on launch.
Buying a 55 page digital guide book is pointless when you can just browse gamefaqs for free and found tons of walkthrough and infos.
But i'm surprise Atlus didn't try to sell Metaphor Royale / Golden.
@PuppetMaster Just wait. The merchant is a powerful archetype I bet they will indeed sell a new version if the game down the line, along a switch 2 release. The game is all over the place technically so I wouldn’t be surprised if a an enhanced port for switch 2 took some time to develop.
Is this another case of people setting themselves up for disappointment? Still remember people being pissed at CDPR for their livestream.
@Coversnail rest assured, the "royal" edition will happen. the space between psersona 5 and persona 5: royal was about 3 years so there is still plenty of time for atlus to screw over its fans
No one’s got time for 125 hour games. Would be nice though
@Porco It was also 3 years between SMT V and SMT Vengeance.
@HRdepartment Yet people have time to sink thousands of hours into online games.
@UltimateOtaku91 that’s so wild to me. I have add so anymore than a few hours at a time is when I loose interest.
So keep waiting for the finished game, got it.
@Foxhound Yeah Nintendo really ****ed up with Game Key Cards. Limiting publishers to 64GB cards is an absolutely ridiculous practice that they should stop as soon as possible.
Atlus is really the champions of rereleasing games with minimal added value. The way they keep milking their fans is really off-putting and makes me reluctant to buy any of their games until I feel confident it’s the last release with everything in.
Serious question: does anyone actually buy strategy guides or soundtracks digitally on consoles to use them? I couldn't think of a scenario where I'd do that over just using my phone and googling.
missed opportunity to release a anti-aliasing patch as 20$ dlc
@ItsAlwaysSunnyyy I buy old physical guides or use scans on Internet Archive for titles with a lot of depth and/or secrets. Paying for a digital guide doesn't make sense to me. Maybe if I used a nice tablet? I don't know, I tried that out with comics and it was definitely not for me.
@Jeaz Yep. I didn't think they'd do it with SMT V (or, more accurately, hype got the better of me...), so I got got.
I am still likely to wait for the Switch 2 version. If the PS5 physical version ran directly from the DVD-ROM, then I guess I would argue that I don't have to waste my internal SSD on the file installation size... Oh wait.
@Nei I loved the hardcover books. I play through the game once and use the books for the second run.
@ItsAlwaysSunnyyy In this case the books work so much better i loved those guides also awesome collectibles.
@Kraven Its still a terrible thing those things its a waste of plastic.
@Flaming_Kaiser I do precisely the same thing! Miss them a lot, so glad we got the metaphor one!
@Coversnail it is an ideal handheld game. I have been playing it on my Steam Deck.
I was fine with Metaphor before the big non-event and I am fine with it afterwards.
Weird, I've had this book since February or March. It got released on Amazon.
@lateral_centro This will be the one time they don't do it. We are screwed no matter what.
I think they need to hire new marketing team cause they fumbled hard. Switch 2 port would have bolstered sales and or copying persona 5 success if they marketed with a physical goods edition.
@kmtrain83
I got the japanese ps4 edition lol
@Nei Physical is cooler for a lot of things how a digital downloadcode for the soundtrack.🤣
