@Nexozi Yeah I know i just find it strange they would stop physical PS5 games after going 7 years with them and just stopping them before releasing the PS6. That's why I think the PS6 will launch before this takes effect, and then they can say they stopped physical games because the PS6 is Digital only.
I think this will be Nintendo's GKC moment where it's brought up in every game article going forward.
It's been a s**ty day for news but let's be real the alternatives are no better, Xbox will be going down the all digital route as well and Steam is all digital anyway. The prices of hardware are going up everywhere, to a point you're now seeing £1500 PC handhelds. Next gen you have three options (PS6, Helix, PC) which to me are all the same, all are digital only and all will cost you £1000+.
This is the future of gaming, if you don't like it then you may as well just leave the hobby behind or just stick with older hardware. That's what I will be doing, I'm sticking with the PS5 and Switch 2 for atleast another 5-6 years until I see prices go down, even when the PS6 comes out there's no way the majority of developers will skip the PS5/Switch 2 especially when the PS6 flops due to its price.
But this includes old games in sales right? We need to see the data for branded new games during the release window where I'd wager physical sales are much closer to digital.
I can see a disk drive being sold separately just for PS4 and PS5 games.
What this means for me is any games that are also coming to the Switch 2 I will just get the Switch 2 version. I trust Nintendo won't be abandoning physical games any time soon.
@HonestHick Yes they were sued but the term allow still applies, because they lost the case (have they?) then they now have to allow other retailers to sell their games.
Maybe it's because of losing that case that they have made this decision, to claw back some of the potential lost revenue but curring out the second hand market.
But I think it will backfire and less people will be buying games day one, those who rely on second hand games and rentals (me sometimes) will probably not invest in consoles going forward. This is a huge turning point for gaming, with closures lay offs, no more physical, AI boom, RAM shortage etc. The gaming market is going to crash hard over the next year or two.
It's things like this why I'm thinking of getting my Vita modded, I did the same with my 3DS when the store closed. Mainly because the cost of physical games sky rocketed, you were looking at £300 for Yo Kai watch 3.
This also pretty much confirms the PS6 will be releasing before then and this is basically put in place for that console as it doesn't make sense to do this for the PS5.
@BusyOlf new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only.
The PlayStation store won't be the only option and I'm sure these retailers will be selling the games cheaper than on the PlayStation store. It will be just like PC where you can buy games cheaper from CD keys than actually buying them from the Steam store.
Also sounds like they are going to start allowing retailers to start selling digital playstation games again, which is going to be a saving grace for me as I can't afford to pay £70 for every game I play and have no resale value.
Ultimately this will just mean I buy fewer games day one and will wait for sales. I assume a lot of people will also do the same so I wouldn't be surprised to see sales figures dip for new releases.
I think it's less about the PC sales and more about their main competitor being able to play PC games next gen. Sony are sacrificing those PC sales to protect their brand image by not having their tentpole games appearing on an Xbox Console.
@ShadowRJ Well depending on who they close down any showcases going forward will have less first party games. They are going the same way as Playstation and will only have 2-3 games per year.
@BattleLord I don't see the point, if there's a game you really want to play then just buy it otherwise you could be waiting years for it to come to playstation plus, and some games will never come to playstation plus.
@ATaco Yeah it's gets old fast people complaining about gacha games, if they don't like it then why bother take their time to moan about it. Most of these gacha games put most single player games to shame, every month there's hours of content added to the game such as events and big new areas to explore. If this was from a western dev they would be charging you for these updates and calling it DLC.
This and Wutha have blown me away with the upcoming updates, watched both recent broadcasts and there's some really cool stuff on the way. Also helps how generous both these games are for free currency.
If they partner up with third parties like with HellDivers 2, Marvel Tokon and Horizon Steel Frontiers then that's fine, but the problem is taking up their own single player focussed studios time and effort creating live service games for them to get cancelled or flop. Also they need to stop buying unproven devs that have never made a hit, and then having them create a live service game.
If they are to buy any studios going forward with the sole purpose of developing live service games then they need to make sure they have a proven track record, and not in decline like Bunjie was at the time of acquisition.
Actually after reading it again it sounds like he's talking about mobile phones and having console experiences on them, maybe they are going to bring cloud gaming to mobile next.
@HonestHick $4 Billion would mean 50 million pre orders of the base game. I know GTA is popular but I highly doubt it has that many pre orders on console.
@darylb24 Sony already said they plan on selling less consoles going forward so I doubt this will effect them as bad as you think, especially with whatever stock they will soon fly off the shelves because of GTA 6. The amount of revenue coming their way because of GTA is going to be insane. I wouldn't be surprised to see 15+ million copies sold just on PS5 alone, and Sony get a 30% cut of that. They can afford to sell at a loss for now.
Microsoft on the other hand have just pushed those wanting a new console for GTA towards getting a PS5.
Might just stick with the PS5 for 3-4 years after the PS6 comes out as the majority of games will be cross gen anyway. With that in mind I'm tempted to sell my steam deck oled for £600 and put towards a PS5 Pro.
If anyone stuck on last gen consoles wants to play GTA 6 its now pretty much certain they will get a PS5. These absurd increases and the looming lay offs and closures are not doing Xbox any favors, any goodwill they have garnered over the last couple months has just gone out the window.
@Sammy_G Well unlike with Xbox Sony aren't closing any studios this time round. Xbox elitists will try and paint this as the same as them closing down 3-4 studios 😂.
This was inevitable and still would have happened if Sony didn't acquire them. Its a shame Sony spent that amount on them, that money could have bought them a few decent well known single player focussed developers instead.
The higher the price the less people that buy, meaning most game devs will just carry on supporting the PS5 for many years to come anyway. Apart from having slightly better visuals and better performance I can't see the PS6 having many exclusives at all for atleast 3-4 years in. Hopefully the cost of RAM has calmed down by then.
It all depends on the games for me, as soon as JRPG's and other big Japanese games like Monster Hunter and Resi start skipping the PS5 then I will 100% be getting one. For first party stuff I'm only really interested in Horizon 3 and maybe TLOU 3 so once they release and are PS6 exclusive then I will get one.
Also puts into perspective how much the next Xbox is going to cost, easily £1200 onwards.
But for the price of this console you're better off getting a PS5 and a Switch 2 to enjoy the best exclusives around, have you're games better optimised and have the ability to okay handheld if you want including some of the latest releases.
@Northern_munkey I think what he's trying to say is that Sony want to sell as less units as possible by not having any sales or promotions. For example they would rather sell 3 million over Christmas and monetise those 3 million than sell 6 million without monetising them.
I think if they want to release 2-3 single player games anually then they need more studios. So I definitely see more acquisitions coming over the next 2-3 years.
For live service titles it's going to be hit and miss and I think they should focus more on second party live service titles rather than using their own studios, just like HellDivers 2 and Marvel Tokon.

What's the point of stopping physical games for the last year of the PS5? It would make more sense if the PS6 is launching end of 2027.

Re: PlayStation Consoles to Stop Getting Disc-Based Physical Releases in 2028
Would be interesting if Xbox decided to stick with physical games to get one over on Sony. Kinda wish they do as it may force Sony to reconsider.

Re: PS5 Dominates Xbox for Single Player Games, New Data Suggests
Not surprising since the PS5 has outsold the Series consoles by 3:1, also doesn't help gamepass has trained most not to buy games.

Re: Rumour: PS6 Costs Sony Almost $1,000 to Make Right Now
So if Sony delay the PS6 by a few years then it would cost more for us to buy than it would if it released in 2027?
If that's the case then I say let them release it next year. It would actually make more business sense to get the PS6 out as soon as possible.

Re: PS5 Costs Too Much, But These New Xbox Price Increases Are Just Absurd
We expect another doubling by the fall of 2027.
There's no way the helix doesn't cost less than £1200, and at this rate I highly doubt it's coming next year.
Also expect Gears on PS5 by end of 2027.
