Update []:
It now turns out that neither PSN account playing Halo: Campaign Evolved in local two-player co-op will need a PS Plus membership.
In a new post to social media, developer Halo Studios shared the update: "We incorrectly stated that PlayStation Plus is required for local co-op splitscreen play. Local splitscreen co-op requires a PlayStation account for each player but does not require a PlayStation Plus account."
As such, both players wanting to play Halo: Campaign Evolved in split-screen will need a PSN account and a Microsoft account linked, but they won't each need to be paying for PS Plus.

Original Story: If you are planning to play Halo: Campaign Evolved like the days of old in local split-screen co-op next month, make sure your mate brings their PS Plus membership with them.
Despite being an offline mode, it's been revealed both players wanting to go through the campaign in local co-op need a PS Plus subscription. A new community Q&A post from the developer says "if you’re playing split-screen on PlayStation 5, both accounts will need to have PlayStation Plus".
Oh, and the two of you will also need a Microsoft account each and have it linked to your PSN profile.
This is a standard requirement for most PS5 games ported by Microsoft, but for a friend who just wants to casually play along with you, it's another barrier to entry.
Once again, the Halo: Campaign Evolved package on PS5 is exactly that: just the campaign. There are no competitive multiplayer modes — the only online connectivity should come from the online co-op functionality.
The demands are receiving heavy criticism because this is unusual: the vast majority of PS5 titles with local co-op don't come with these requirements. There's a note in the post that states "having these active PlayStation Plus subscriptions will also provide access to online co-op play", but these are two different modes within the game and shouldn't be so heavily linked together.

Or, at least not to the point where an offline player would need two PS Plus subscriptions just to play offline co-op. It's not clear whether this was Microsoft's decision or down to Sony's own infrastructure.
Nevertheless, fans have taken to social media to voice their displeasure with the demands, some cancelling their PS5 pre-orders.
In a Reddit post on the same subject, fans are also discussing who's at fault. "Local splitscreen shouldn't require any of the players to have an online f*cking subscription," said TheAzureAzazel. Another response from Life-Relation-1653 theorises that Sony is the problem here: "Wow. That's pretty gross honestly. I'm guessing this is a PlayStation decision, though and not Halo Studios."
"A subscription needed to play co-op hits my brain in a similar way that quote from that Ubisoft or EA executive does. The one where they toss around the idea of making people pay for bullets in their magazine or something like that," added thatoneguy2252. "A gross paywall is the point I’m clumsily driving at here."
Halo: Campaign Evolved launches for PS5 on 28th July 2026, but what do you make of these PS Plus requirements? Do you think they're unfair or not? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Wow, wtf?! This is one of the dumbest decisions they could have done.
Well they’ll have to change that. That’s just stupid.
Im not sure what Microsoft get out of this as they dont make any money out of PS+ subs
Local Coop?! In the house?! Sitting next to each other?! You BOTH need a PS+ subscription? That's insane!
You guys need to stop getting bent over and royally shafted by a Microsoft. It's so easy to not buy any of their game key discs and just support other publishers that deserve your cash more.
More Microsoft being Microsoft. I knew they were going low when the new ceo came in to play. Dirty tactics by a dirty company with a nasty ceo. This is fine with me I thought this might be the Trojan that gets people to buy a trash box but now that plan will not work. We have to purchase the game have loads of fun and then the New Halo is exclusive, I guess that formula isn't working so try to make the other version worse, contracts were signed so they have to release on Playstation. How Microsoft treated the halo franchise is why I can never return. Trash box and there dirty tactics is why no one has one. It's not even in conversations all anybody wants is a PS5 or a Switch 2, RIP Xbox, have fun going the way of Sega.
@trev666 probably not Microsoft’s decision for that reason
Ok this is nonsense. Hopefully, it will not start a new trend. Anyway, it doesn't affect me personally since I don't play multiplayer games, even couch op ones but I have friends that won't be happy with this.
Still, I don't know who to blame. Microsoft? But if it is indeed a PC they will remove the pay to play online thing they have, I guess?
Personally, I am interested in the game although I may just get Game Pass for one month or look for a discounted Steam key. I have played a bit of the original game but it was ages ago.
@Mio_Nakashima I agree, but this stuff still needs to be highlighted and criticized. And it's possible to do both.
Add me to the WTaF? crowd. I'm usually pretty good at guessing some reasons for things but at I'm a complete loss to explain an ONLINE subscription for an OFFLINE mode. 🤪
Update Edit: I suppose my guess should have been: They done did made a mistake and messed up.
It's really the ONLY explanation that makes any sense. 😁
@Friendly how would you know? Going on evidence this is all xbox because all PS5 games with local co op do not do this. Only a Microsoft port is requiring this. Ok use your brain and put 2 and 2 together. It's not hard to see what Microsoft is doing.
@ElectricWizard are you serious they get to make it seem like Sony wants everyone to have accounts, this was easily an xbox choice and they can use pirating as an excuse. It only takes half a brain to figure this out.
More rakes over at Microsoft than Home Depot in Autumn
@trev666 is this a rhetorical question? What does any company gain by sabotage?
Hilarious stuff. What the hell. 😂
Oh wow, I was going to play this co-op with my son offline. Guess I’m cancelling that plan. He doesn’t even have a separate PlayStation or Microsoft account. We just use my account. I cancelled PS+ a few months ago because it’s a waste of money for someone that no longer plays games online (and if I do, I’ll play on Steamdeck where it’s free). You don’t have to pay to have a Microsoft account at least, but this doesn’t make any sense for families that share accounts for games. What’s next? I’m going to have to buy the game digitally for each digital account? Thought Halo was a deal at $50, but to add two subs to it, it’s more expensive than a $70 game. Hope they change this or they’ll start losing sales.
And I’m not going to play on Xbox instead because it’s still convoluted. Sorry Halo, you lost me.
This sounds like Microsoft’s scummy practice of needing an account mixed with Sony trying to start a scummy practice of needing a sub to track offline multiplayer. I swear, both of these companies are making active decisions to ensure I’m done with both of them by the end of the generation.
Honestly, I hate to say it, but this will likely lead to people hacking the game and pirating it long term. You lose sales from asking too much.
Let’s get this right if I want to buy and play say FH5 or Halo single player I have to have a Microsoft account to play them on PS5 Pro?
So, I guess MS wants to use Halo to stimulate growth in PS+ memberships by forcing it to be necessary for local co-op.
Genius!
This is simple, just don’t buy XBOX games and let them keep them all as exclusives.
Everyone’s a winner then.
Having said that 5 million plus FH5 on PS5 isn’t going to help.
This is ridiculous and a really stupid way to hurt sales of the game. Hopefully they fix this before launch.
Well, it’s not a system issue as I’ve never come across this with any others PS game. Doubt Sony changed their rules just for Microsoft, and doubt it’s a one game only thing.
My guess, MS did it because they want millions of PS players to download a Microsoft account for their own numbers, and Sony perhaps only link to the Microsoft account through PSN?
What ever happened to the good ole gaming days.
Just plug it in and play.
This is the "competition" we need, huh?
@AI-Generation This. What happened to fun in gaming? These companies are so greedy it’s ridiculous. They deserve their financial ruin and reckoning if they’re going to pull stunts like this.
@trev666 this is very much Sony trying to make some money off of this release.
This has turned out to be the worst way we could have possibly got Halo on PS5. In fact, the entire Xbox on PS5 initiative has been pretty dreadful when you think about it. They've cut off the thinnest slivers of their franchises, released them at premium cost and where they have received physical releases, they've been 'game key cards'.
Couple that with all the wind-up acts they like to pull, like cancelling then un-cancelling PS5 versions with wishy washy corpo-speak, the Gears E-Day debacle and now this, you've got to feel like they're really reluctant about the whole thing.
It's like they want us to buy their games, but they want us to be as miserable about doing so as possible.
Ah that is absolutely ridiculous, local co op needs PS plus? Absolutely disgusting from MS, and Sony is its a mandate from them
@CKFilms Makes no sense. To my knowledge, there's no other game that works like this, so if everyone else can figure it out then I'm not sure why Microsoft can't.
My guess is that this is because Microsoft wants you to sign in to an Xbox account, which makes the "local offline play" technically "online".
Purely my speculation, but it's stupid and should be fixed.
Well I'm sure this outcry is gonna make whoever decided that change course. Especially since it's already affecting preorder numbers.
It's quite simple for MS to fix. Just provide an option for local play where the second player is just an avatar playing alongside the game owner where no progression for that player is earned.
MS can keep the requirement for two players who want to use their created characters in the same game instance to require PS accounts, all they need do is provide the aforementioned alternative.
Gamers? Upset? Again? No.
Nasty side effect of it unnecessarily being an always online game even for just the singleplayer campaign. Hopefully it's sorted before it's out because it's stupid but the fact it's always online for the story is just another reason for me to wait until it hits the bargain bin.
Microsoft seems averse to making money.
Even when they have an easy win, they still make a decision that puts them in a bad light.
@For-Kier Someone complaining about complaining therefore making their point moot? No.
@For-Kier right? I mean, this seems legit. But if it weren’t this, it would be something else. Probably even more minuscule.
common console L in 2026.
@For-Kier only a minority. Don't forget, this is an issue that most people won't care about or even use if they own the game. But when you run a 24hr website, 'outrage' like this is insta-news.
@Gunbeld more like a nasty effect of consoomers letting greedy console manufactures get away with scamming them out of their own internet, by making them pay for it twice, to access online multiplayer. ps plus used to didn’t force people to need it for online play
@TheDarts most people that don’t care about halo, sure. but cooperative play is a staple of halo.
If you are doing co-op from same console on same screen, you should not have to pay. But I could see it differently if you are somehow using 2 different consoles or screens.
Ahhh the en-s***ification of gaming continues... Everyday the gaming world gets a little bit worse.. and usually Microsoft is behind it. Go Green Go! But whoever required this, either Sony or XBOX is absolutely insane. It's like every company is determined to make things absolutely terrible for everyone at all times.
Imagine buying this game on a whim and trying to play it with someone only to find out you BOTH have to sign up for some crap service just to play the game you bought…I would be furious. And I doubt it’s going to be made that clear before you get in and it’s too late. Abysmal business practice they should reverse course on this immediately
@nomither6 I always get a chuckle at your takes. Using a $ sign in Sony and Microsoft, and calling people "consoomers".
Pretty sure you're a consoomer yourself.
Easy pass for me anyway, I have never been a fan of the series at all, but this is a crazy situation for the fans of the game! Its something that hasn’t been done by Sony before, or at least not that personally know about, so it has got to be something about how Microsoft wants to have couch co-op with people each logging into the 2 accounts and has had to have made Sony make the same decision since allowing 2 accounts on the same game without a PlayStation account perhaps causes a headache on a software level.. However, I guess the biggest thing will be if 2 players on Xbox both need to have an account each. If that’s the case, then this boils down to a Microsoft issue.
This is so *** backwards I almost have to believe someone just made a typo or had a brain fart or... something!
I didn't plan on playing this split-screen anyway so this really doesn't affect me but still. Literally no other game works like this. Whomever is responsible for this should be ashamed of themselves!
That‘s weird. Does Microsoft have an incentive to force people into a Sony service Microsoft doesn’t get a single penny from? This game even has no online component at all.
Or is the Xbox account „online enough“ for Sony to make PS Plus a requirement?
If that‘s the case: For its own accounts, there is no requirement from Sony for PS Plus. A classic platform holder BS move.
Cool. I'll just take the game off my wish list, and buy something else.
@CKFilms I'm honestly still wrapping my head about the notion of splitscreen couch multiplayer requiring multiple user profiles to begin with. How does that even work? And to what end, just getting scoreboards/trophies apiece?🤔
Nice little sabotage by Microsoft there to make sure people who own both consoles or PS5/PC get the Xbox/PC version instead.
Also requiring a Microsoft account is also lame, people on PC kicked up a fuss about creating a playstation account to play HellDivers 2 so I say Playstation gamers should be doing the same over this.
@LiamCroft You missed to mention an important information:
Microsoft mentions the feature of cross-progression. This could be the main reason.
Don't worry xBox will just do another 180 on this as they do with EVERYTHING else lately. Just give a week of fan backlash and they'll change their minds again.
Local co-op needs PS+ and linked to MS account is just crazy. Luckily i'm not a fan of Halo or any MS games.
But hey, you guys have fun with MS shenanigans 😁🍻
@FuzzieGinge88 hopefully. Otherwise, never full price for an MS game.
Every chance to nickel and dime people and these companies can't help themselves. I am so over it. Modern consoles can get in the bin.
This must be the stupidest business decision I've read about in a long while. I don't think the new CEO does a good job of turning Xbox around
I’m not sure MS takes the blame for this? Surely Sony decide when someone needs a plus?
One of the dumbest and anti-consumer decisions I’ve ever seen. Considering Halo was a local multiplayer staple back in the day, this is disrespectful to players purchasing the game. Basically asking a user to spend $200ish just to play local multiplayer with their buddy.
I’m going to be a glass half full guy here and say they made a mistake and just meant you need 2 PlayStation accounts.
Simple, pre-order cancelled!
I'll still get it but only at 50% sale price now.
Another bad move by MS.
Not quite as bad as needing up to 4 GBAs to play Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles in 2-4 player mode on the GC but this is ridiculous.
And suddenly i have lost interest.
I was looking forward to playing it, Oh well.
Lmao. This is absurd. Why even make this a thing?
Remember when pc players were unhappy about the psn requirement for Helldivers 2? Cause this should upset people as well.
@Swandivetotheasphalt It a Q&A on the official Halo website. There no way this could be a mistake unless the person answering the questions don’t know anything about PlayStation… etc
@JoeNobody Yeah but at the same time, Gears of War has local co-op and doesn't do this. Neither company has done this before. It also makes no sense for MS to insist that anyone wanting to play this has to give Sony more money. MS get nothing from this apart from probably less sales.
@4fold
I think that sounds about right.
It certainly seems like an issue caused by Xbox.
Xbox want all players to have an Xbox account for local play, which is ridiculous, and the only way Sony can/will facilitate this is via linking to PS Plus accounts.
Microsoft really has just 💩 the bed in too many aspects since 2013. What a tone deaf demand with inflation as high as it is and the barrier to entry being the most difficult it has been in 20 years. It sucks because I was rooting for Xbox this generation back in 2020 and they proved me wrong about everything. Between my PS5 and Switch 2, I’m set. But Xbox still gets to bring their pants-on-head-ridiculous moves and policies to these platforms because they bought up ABK, Bethesda, etc.
@Deadlyblack @UltimateOtaku91 have you ever played Helldivers 2 on PC? The mandatory PSN login brought nothing to the game. No trophies, No cross progression. No friendliest. Just a skin. So the fan base kicked off. Then they reversed it.
This feels like it is all because of the way Xbox have built the co-op / cross platform functionality.
It also sounds like you always need to be online to play this game in split screen co-op, and maybe even single player mode - all to facilitate this "cross-platform progression".
@get2sammyb
I just wrote a comment above, but then read yours.
It sounds to me like you need to be online to play split screen co-op, and maybe even (ridiculously) single player, from what I read here. All because of this "cross-platform progression" system they mention.
Thus forcing the Xbox and PS Plus accounts situation.
@Max_the_German There's online co-op. I heard the game was also always online but that seems like a mistake from what I can see after looking it up myself.
@nomither6 Worth every penny to avoid having to associate with the lowest forms of life on Steam, the bottom feeders natural habitat.
Not a big deal, if course you need ps+ to play online
@Balaam_ this isn’t on Microsoft. Any decisions about ps+ requirements are fully on Sony.
@belmont do you not play games with other people because you are bad at games or just unpleasant to be around?
Removed - inappropriate
Takes out Xbox and four controllers, connect it to the tv and have fun with the family.
Good luck with double ps+ for a couch Coöp game! They can keep their port of a remake of a remaster.
@Swandivetotheasphalt The post was done by the Sr. Community Manager who been with the company for over 10yrs, so not exactly a random intern C&P information.
@PizzaX3 What kind of nonsensical question is that? Is is that strange that I play moslty jrpgs and other games from Japan while I have friends that enjoy playing Counter Strike and Call of Duty?
@cragis0001 My entire playtime in Helldivers 2 was on PC lol.
Insert da ***** they doing ova der meme
This doesn’t even make sense. We each need a premium subscription service to play a local, offline mode? Am I missing something? If that’s the case I won’t be buying the game.
Another Microsoft game I will have to sadly skip
I'm not going to buy Plus for myself and Plus for my gf just to play Halo, definitely not buying that game unless they fix this.
We live in the stupidest timeline. How idiotic. For an OFFLINE, LOCAL, mode to ask for an subscription service meant for ONLINE and then BOTH players need it? Well done. When nobody buys it they'll cry about how the port hasn't sold the needed gazillion copies day one. This is just plain ridiculous.
@get2sammyb "My guess is that this is because Microsoft wants you to sign in to an Xbox account, which makes the "local offline play" technically "online"."
That's the only "logical" reason I can think of too. (not really logical, but you know what I mean).
Ironically if you're game sharing with another console you should still be able to play with one PS Plus account! The main account holder has PS Plus and buys the game, it's available to play on the second console set as their "primary" console, which also allows the other users access to PS Plus, just without automated cloud saves, and the primary account plays it on their own console... So this makes absolutely no sense. In theory, a second account on a "primary" console with PS Plus access should just work anyway...but again, you shouldn't need Plus for offline co op play anyway! (a game "requiring an Internet connection" for additional downloads isn't the same as playing online after all).
Someone somewhere needs a slap, and then to go back to the drawing board and fix this.
I am jack's complete lack of surprise.
@Gunbeld and this is the reason I'm skipping it. I don't get any of these always-online single player games. Made the decision to skip this very easy.
That's pretty poor. I was planning on getting this so myself and my wife could play at split screen co-op. We both loved playing the original halo on Xbox obviously years and years before we got together - so the chance to do this again with the graphical overhaul was one we didn't fancy passing up on. For an offline game to require a PS plus subscription from one of the players to local coop would be reason enough for us not to bother but two? Nah. No thanks! Twice over!
The PS store page says "online play required" which suggests you can't even play the game offline solo.
@GraniteFraggle Same! Played the original Halo (and Halo 2) co-op with my wife and have been looking forward to returning, now as a Playstation gamer. One of the games we've been looking forward to most this year. I have PS+ (for the monthly games) but she doesn't because she mostly only plays local co-op games with me. No way in the world we're paying an additional monthly subscription fee just to play this one game.
@KundaliniRising333
This isn't true though, did you come to that conclusion by reading one tweet in this article?
Local co-op for Baldurs Gate 3, as in two people playing on one console together, doesn't require PS Plus at all, you just join up at character creation. A subscription is required to group up online when playing on seperate systems.
@trev666 Must be a Sony choice/they have dated infrastructure.
@Mio_Nakashima
Do you know factually that MS is making Sony do this? MS doesn't get anything out of it. If anything, it harms sales on PS5, so maybe this is Sony's doing due to infrastructure issues.
@viktorcode Who said this was an Xbox choice and not Sony?
@darylb24 How is this Sony's infrastructure if the cause of the problem is having to log in to an online Microsoft account?
@Intr1n5ic
I am not talking about that part (most MS games have that part).
I am talking about requiring 2 PS+ subs for offline splitscreen or online, which MS itself doesn't on the Xbox version and not all on the PC version. Looks like Sony's choice to me.
My interest for Halo just went from mild to zero.
What are the people over at MS thinking? It's like they want their games to fail.
Just look at the new gears of war: +400M budget with PS5 version cancelled, day one on gamepass and releasing during the october halloween bloodbath. It's being sent out to die.
@JoeNobody
How do you know it's Xbox?
A) They don't ever do this on their Xbox games on Xbox and aren't doing this time either.
B) They haven't done this for any other PS5 Port
C) They don't ask Steam to do this, and they can't make Sony do this either
To me, this looks like a Sony choice
@darylb24 They have created the problem by making two people require individual Microsoft accounts when playing on the same system, that's ridiculous. The only one who should need an account is the person whose console you're playing on, this is just another way for them to talk about engagement numbers.
@Intr1n5ic
Sony decides whether it wants to require one or both players to have PS+ for this particular game. If there were issues, they could have just not made it a requirement for this particular game. Xbox seems to be fine with just one player having a subscription. Steam has no issue letting both players play without a subscription. Seems like a Sony choice from all angles.
Instead of drawing in a crowd of first-time Halo players, you severely undercut your own sales and public perception. You just can't make this stuff up...
@darylb24 Again, the entire issue here is two people sitting side by side both needing to have individual Microsoft accounts to play together. As you need to be online to log in to those accounts on PlayStation, they're treated as online requirements which require a subscription.
We could get in to the whole conversation of why this game needs a connection at all for local co-op or solo, but I'll ask you this instead, why is Microsoft making it's own player base sign in to two seperate accounts to play splitscreen with each other?
Is MS doing this to lower PS5 sales to justify making it exclusive going forward? I wouldn't put it past them. Nothing they do makes sense anymore!
Ha, ha, ha...🤣🤣🤣.....anyway!
Adds Halo to the "I'll buy it second hand as the publisher is a complete utter tool" wish list.
This wasn’t the case for Gears of War, and I’m still counting on this to be fake news to hurt PlayStation again.
@Stocksy Well seeing as this is the first game to ever require a PS Plus subscription for two players sitting on a couch beside each other... if this was down to Sony I'm sure they would have enforced it at some point before in the 13 years that have required PS Plus for online play.
I’m thinking this will get fixed, planning to play co-op with my son without all that extra ***** needed. If they dont sort it out, I’m not buying the game. Not supporting things like this.
See you all next month when this flops and Halo Studios is hit with layoffs
Microsoft requires an Xbox account and does online check-ins for progression tracking. Since this is an online service, Sony requires a PS Plus account. Sony needs to fix this.
Weird , perhaps a mistake from Microsoft. Is this the first split screen game they've released on playstation?
Can't be Sony as there's plenty of split green games that don't require this Inc their flagship gt7
The most likely reason for Microsoft to do this is for data and marketing. Microsoft (along with most large corporations) are constantly collecting data on consumers and finding sly ways to market and exploit the data. By implementing a measure like this they not only get PS users to create a Microsoft account, which requires users to provide an email (that provides something to market to), but also associates that Microsoft account with a PS account (that provides another point of connection). Sony did something similar when they were requiring a PS account for Helldivers 2 on PC. We consumers are the product in the world of advertising.
I don't know what it is, but every time I have to log in to a Microsoft product it pushes me into highly aggravated state. I absolutely abhor their intrusiveness. I wonder if their is an alternate reality where personal computing is driven by Linux rather than Microsoft. How different would it be?
Petty revenge by Sony over Gears being dropped? Or Microsoft being jerks? I only know two things:
Microsoft Account = $0.00
Sony PSN "Essentials" Account = $10.99 / month
So to play coach co-op on a PS5 it will be $21.98 / month
I hate to say, here's another one of those glaring example this entire gaming generation has been *****!
Definitely not buying this. I hate the whole I need a MS account. My 5 year son needs an MS account to play Forza so he plays on my account.
I cancelled my PSN plus subscription. Sony can go kick rocks.
I see zero value in PS plus account.
@mac_da_man I'm not buying this game becuase of the need for my 5 year old to have an Microsoft account.
That is wild lmao
I’m not sure why people are automatically blaming Sony for this. Sony lets people play certain F2P games without a PS+ account. They surely can do so in this case too instead of requiring a Plus subscription.
As far as a Xbox account, PlayStation required PC gamers to create PS accounts for their games too. Many software publishers require accounts for their games as well. I don’t think it should be required for any game but is a history there.
It’s the PS+ requirement that’s BS and Sony and MS need to figure it out, whoever is to blame. Who knows, maybe they both are to blame…
@Propaperpusher "My 5 year son needs an MS account to play Forza so he plays on my account." And then in the next breath "I'm not buying this game becuase of the need for my 5 year old to have an Microsoft account." Couldn't he just use your MS account like he does with FH5?
I've had a MS account since way back in my 360 days and a PS+ account since the PS3 and seeing as my wife hates halo with a passion this ain't a problem for me. It's gotta be a mistake surely..
Modern AAA gaming is a hellscape.
All the more reason to avoid now so thanks for that Microsoft 🫡
Wait, if I want to play couch coop with my daughter on the same console, i need to get her a ps+ sub and not just a profile?
Said this on pure xbox...
I have a feeling its unintentionally a bit of both sides. MS likes users to have a MS account (both players need one on xbox consoles as well as PS in local co-op). PS requires plus to be able to connect online.
Its likely the needing a MS account to be verified and the plus requirement to do so clashing and making it ridiculous.
It would be silly of MS to require it as im pretty sure they wouldn't intentionally try and give sony more subs, yet PS wouldn't intentionally cut themselves out of a 30% cut of a game that cost them nothing to make.
Whatever it is its stupid.
Here’s a lengthy explanation of why this is required but it all still sounds like comes down to Sony’s choice on whether to charge for it via PS+ since they can easily waive the paid requirement (like they do for F2P games).
https://x.com/manabyte/status/2068368577166516665?s=46
Regardless of whose fault it is, hopefully we’ll find out more in the coming days. And I’m betting some solution will be worked out between MS and Sony. Can’t see it launching like this.
@Matroska Microsoft doesn't want this to sell on PS5, case and point thank you for lining up my point even more with your post. They are using anti piracy to force this on Sony.
@darylb24
A) Why would the force an anti piracy restraint on them selves. They want it to sell on trashbox Sony takes a 30% cut of all game sales on Playstation.
B) They just got their new CEO, Phil was nice a bit loopy but wouldn't stoop this low. We already know this new CEO has no professionalism and is okay with corporate sabotage, by the Showcase and Gears.
C) They dont care about Steam they are trying to integrate a steam launcher on the new Xbox/PC that they are working on.
To me, this looks like corporate sabotage thanks for solidifying my point with your questions.
One (unpopular?) alternative is to not play it or care. JOMO.
I make sure tha Microsoft never sees a dime of my money. I am quite sure they will ruin the Fable rollout even more than they are ruining this. The fall of Xbox is astonishing in its hubris and incompetence.
So after reading through this again, I suspect this may well be the sticking point:
"you will need a Microsoft account and XBOX Gamertag, regardless of the platform(s) you play on. This enables both cross-platform play and cross-platform progression."
What that says to me is that someone at Microsoft has tied in the requirement of having an XBox account to mandatory "cross-platform play and cross-platform progression"... Which clearly should be an optional feature (you want to play online cross platform / progression, then sure, you need PS Plus!), but if you're playing locally surely there's no need to even touch that feature...Just have a toggle in the game if you want cross progression (like many other games do), and cross play obviously could only apply if you're playing online anyway.
It sounds like someone with a bit more competency over at Microsoft needs to take a look at this as if this is indeed the issue, it should, in theory, be a relatively easy fix.
I think people need to vote with their wallets on this, just buy the game second hand or even rent it, Microsoft deserve to get poor sales over this.
PS+ for local split-screen is absolute madness. Just proper baffling.
The reason for this is you can’t set up local accounts on Xbox like you can on the PS5. Every account on an Xbox is automatically a Microsoft account, an annoying holdover from the Xbox One I can assure you. Rather than create a different protocol just for PS owners they’ve kept the same requirements.
It sucks on both levels
@awp69 nope it's an obvious Microsoft F up. No other game on playstation requires it for 2 player offline co-op. The snake oil salesman at Microsoft are just desperately trying to boost their MAU.
Sony came out and said it months ago about “monetising the installed base”. They are scummy and this is the reason I spend more time playing older games then recent releases
@Bob_Tempura
It seems to me that Xbox have taken the choice to make at least some elements of progression completely tied to their servers - this "cross-platform progression".
I suspect the next news on this game will be that you can't play local split screen unless online, and the more I think about it, the more sure I am that single player won't be possible without being online too.
(This has then led to the PS Plus requirement)
It all just seems very ridiculous on Xbox's part, and as you say, the option to turn this off and have progress saved to the PS5 only should be included.
For all those people here screaming "Microsoft!"
They have no control over Sony making this part of PS+.
Is this due to Microsoft accounts? Had the Master Chief collection for a little while (On steam) and started playing CE today. it was annoying to then connect to Microsoft. Took me ages to sort out. Wish it was just an ‘Xbox account’ instead. Microsoft over complicate the logins and authentication apps that ‘s for sure.
It's to boost numbers for both GamePass and PS+ to show its shareholders oh look how many are playing Halo On PS5
They can go fork themselves!
Halo will sell more on Playstation than Xbox so the backlash should make them change course because its all about the money
And this is why moving to PC was the best choice I've made in 40 years of gaming. All these companies take the piss. You just have to find where it happens less often...
The fact you need a single PS Plus subscription, let alone 2 for an OFFLINE experience, is absolute corporate greed. They are literally changing the terms of service but enforcing PS Plus for offline play. Even more scummy considering the game isn't free to play.
I really hope people do not buy this, because scummy behaviour like this should not be financed.
Play on ps get a ps account.
Why is that so stupid?
Play on xbots get a account.
Is this so hard to do?
You get an xbox exclusive and you whine like pieces of something disgusting!!!
JoeNobody
They could have just pulled Halo from PS5 if they wanted to, but whatever you say lol.
Intr1n5ic
Signing into 2 accounts isn't the issue; charging for 2 accounts is.
However, you try to spin it, Sony charging twice is the issue here.
Your Sony Bias may get in the way of facts, but come on now.
Wait a minute Microsoft trying to boost their active player numbers 😂 I hope y'all knows that
It's unbelievable... no, seriously, the most unbelievable thing on earth.
It's like to have telephone to next room.
Seriously... who make LOCAL co-op via internet? It runs on same machine !?! SAME MACHINE !!! NO??? OK, so my playstation calls server and asks what it should display on bottom half while player from upper half shoots, or what???
Unbelievable...
They already said it was a mistake.
Needing two accounts for couch co-op is weird but ok, this is how consoles work with one controller being tied to one account instead of being a standalone input device.
Needing two accounts with PS+ for couch co-op? Ok, now there's some shenanigans going on and I doubt it is on Sony side given the ammount of games with couch co-op that don't charge anything.
All this drama and it was just Xbox being dumb as usual.
"We incorrectly stated that PlayStation Plus is required for local co-op splitscreen play. Local splitscreen co-op requires a PlayStation account for each player but does not require a PlayStation Plus account."
https://x.com/i/status/2068499211868643333
@LiamCroft The FAQ has now been updated and states that PS Plus isn't required at all for offline play, including split screen co-op. Obviously it's still required for playing online, as standard, and to play the game at all you'll still need an XBox gamertag to link to.
Either someone didn't understand how the PS Plus subscription service works and made a mistake putting that FAQ together, or Microsoft have seen the chaos this information has caused and made the necessary changes to separate out offline play from having an online requirement.
From the FAQ:
"PlayStation 5®: If you’re playing splitscreen local co-op on PlayStation 5®, both players will need to be signed into PlayStation accounts and be linked to Microsoft accounts. A PlayStation Plus account is NOT required for local splitscreen co-op. Online network co-op play requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription."
Over 150 heated comments for something that was just a mistake in the FAQs, lol.
Is funny that none of the articles I read about this suggested that it could just be a mistake, even though that actually is about the only thing that would make sense.
This is now a big joke. So many people let the mask drop and now Halo Studios is back tracking. 🤣
@Friendly how is this Sony's fault? Next, are you going to say Sony also forced MS to put the same requirement on Xbox series consoles too? And Sony forces MS to require you to link your Steam account to MS account if you're playing on Steam?
@awp69 yeh plenty of ppl that know Thier stuff when it comes to console stuff 😂
Now let's see how many hold Thier hands up and say we were wrong ....or turn this Into they changed it cause of the backlash conspiracy starts
It’s because of the M$ account requirement for the second player. Both PSN accounts need to be talking to an external service, so that’ll be why PS Plus is needed. A combination of the way PSN’s set up, and M$ wanting an identifiable unique player for its metrics and data collection.
Absolutely not, screw you and your game!
@StrickenBiged Except the Halo social account have already confirmed this is a mistake and doesn’t need Plus for local play. Just a basic PSN account which is a system limitation like with any other game.
I don't take side in this mess as I don't buy M$ games at all, but doesn't most people that play games regulary have all the required accounts already? Doesn't matter if it's PS Plus or M$ or whatever?? Everyone here acts like they need to go out and get 2 brand new accounts that I would asume they already got to begin with, or am I that wrong??!!
That said, the corporate greed is endless in 2026, feels like the end of gaming as we know it if we let this go on for much longer...
Are we just glossing over the fact that Microsoft is REQUIRING an Xbox account to play this game on PS5??? Do we recall them all screaming bloody murder over how you needed to connect a PSN account to play Helldivers 2 when it went multi platform???? Where is the same energy for Xbox here???
@darylb24 If anyone is displaying bias here it certainly isn't me, you along with several other regulars rush to a PlayStation site to defend Xbox and Microsoft at every opportunity.
It's baffling to me that anyone is defending this crap. Instead of a friend or partner being able to just press start on a second controller, they have to f*** around setting up a Microsoft account if they don't have one, creating a profile, setting up passwords, verifying emails, just to play a couch co-op game. If Sony ever implemented this I'd be saying the exact same thing.
Fortunately, it's now been clarified that those on PS don't have to pay, but anyone wanting to play with you still needlessly has to set-up two accounts because of Microsofts stupidity.
It's bad enough they need you to have an Microsoft/Xbox account
It's a bit of a pain to set up an Xbox account to play but at least you don't have to give your real details to do it.
I'm surprised so many people thought it was Microsoft's decision. They have absolutely no incentive to help grow PS Plus. It was either a typo or a decision made by Sony, and it turns out it was the first one.
More fumbling from Xbox then.
A typo is writing an incorrect word in place of another. Not a whole paragraph with a very definite and deliberate meaning.
This wasn't a typo, it was walked back due to the backlash.
I remember this side of the internet blew up in a fit of rage when Playstation required PC gamers to set up a PSN account, but now some people are not having the same energy when it comes to MS doing it.
I will keep the same energy as i had back then though, and say that setting up a MS acccount will probably take mins and isnt worth complaining over if you really wanna play the game. In fact, it’s as easy as setting up a PSN account 😉
@Swandivetotheasphalt Which is a one word typo. The original posting is absolutely not a one word error. Ergo my point.
I still think the biggest question here is will you be able to Single Player and Local split screen Co-op whilst not being online, or does this "cross-platform progression" require you to be always online?
(Beyond this, the requirement for BOTH users to have Xbox accounts for local just seems like Xbox trying to push up likely flagging active user numbers).
@SMJ and yet the whole thing turned out to be a MS issue and nothing to do with Sony. Ironic really all things considered.
So I was right it was Xboxs fault hahahaha all you trolls thinking Playstation did this kick rocks
When did gamers become so fussy about everything some guys here are worse than a hormonal teenage girl!
Put your big boy pants on and grow up guys quit the belly aching please 🙏
@16BitHero lol. PC is full of pirates and cheaters and scammers and half the AAA games don't work for a year because of some graphics card bug or god knows what
@LowDefAl they hadn’t when I got to commenting! 😂
@badz149 can be a requirement from sony’s end somehow? Two systems working together in a wrong way?
@Skinny-Pete if nobody complained about anything Sonic the Hedgehog the movie would have had the original Sonic design everyone hated.
Lol that was a fast backtrack from MS. They must've seen the huge backlash from PS5 owners who's cancelling pre-order 😁
Also, it's funny watching Xbox fanboys and Sony haters who claim this was Sony mistake 😂
@Ludacritz That new non gamer xbox president will be fired in 2 years. She already showing she has no idea what's she's doing. Xbox is already dead sales wise and she removed the gears of war e day from ps5 when it was planned to be there when Phil was ceo. It's going to sell horribly with a lower Xbox player base. Now she does this with halo. I'm not getting a Microsoft game account to play halo. It's not worth the hassle for an extremely old game. When gta 6 comes out and Xbox realizes how me people from Xbox are buying a ps5 pro the best console out. It will be bad for Xbox. Then they are creating a next gen pc hybrid allegedly going to cost around $1200 to be bought by a small select group of people who can afford it is dumb. They still haven't made up the billions from Activision blizzard acquisition. Cod is not selling at all. At this point they are 3rd party but the president wants to simply bury Xbox brand completely.
@Sonofken while that may be somewhat true, I rarely play online and my personal experience with AAA games has been fantastic.
@CKFilms just as well it wasnt true then
@Swandivetotheasphalt
If you're an eight year old struggling with basic written expression, maybe.
Besides, your point makes no sense - no one "miswrites because of juggling words" and writes the very specific meaning that was communicated in the description.
@16BitHero Then that means you are in a very small percentage of PC players. Only 10% can play at a PS5 level and only 5% at a PS5 pro level according to steams own research. And that's not even taking into account no matter how powerful some glitch or bug is going to make it unplayable for months
Still sucks that both players need a Microsoft account though. Unnecessary friction.
Same as I posted on PX.
If I am understanding this correctly they are saying you require an account to be set up for a guest player for offline couch co-op for a single player campaign?
Not really played any couch co-op in years but if that's the case then it's incredibly sucky. Harvesting data for no reason should get called out without debate regardless of platform.
@Sonofken you have to remember consoles are easy to optimize for. Consoles are also not available/or horrendously overpriced in most countries. PC is the only option for many gamers around the world therefore you are going to have a huge range of specifications. Some are still playing with graphics cards from 15 years ago or more even.
It's true that even the latest configurations can have issues at launch but that's usually on devs and publishers for rushing games out the door as they are usually patched within a few days or weeks. I still play on PS5 pro and Series X but with free online and infinitely better sales/discounts, for my passion in this hobby, PC is preferable.
@16BitHero Completely outdated argument. The global south is moving to console China is moving to console and PC is becoming unaffordable and parts are becoming scarce. Mobile, tablets, pc, PC handhelds, mini PCs, all these things have been the end of consoles and non of them have done it no matter how many in the industry even still to this day say consoles are dead or dying. I'm not arguing with you I'm just putting this information on the web because it needs to be said. Ive been watching giant bomb and ign since they were frat houses for Xbox 360 bros and before that reading tips and tricks and PlayStation magazine. PC has never been the answer and neither has Xbox. PlayStation and Nintendo are why this industry exist and PC would only have indie games if not for the big 2
@Swandivetotheasphalt lmao it was written by the social media community manager open ai bot that was then supposed to be checked by the human social media community manager. Why are you trying to defend a genocide company
@Sonofken these movements you speak of are not happening as quickly as you think they are. I also made it clear that PC is my personal preference - not 'the answer' as you alluded too in your recent response. I also never said console is dying - I've been gaming since the 80's and consoles are more popular than ever. This industry is not sustainable on AAA alone. PC has a wealth of AA as well as indie titles that have historically not come to console but increasingly are so I think there is more balance than you think.
People here will really try to blame Sony for everything, won’t they? I didn’t know they were now co-developing Halo 🤣
@BecauseBecause I'm talking about this specific belly aching my dude but that's nice to know thanks 👍
@Swandivetotheasphalt No he's salary and is the guy who wore the PlayStation shirt at the unveil event that the Xbox community didn't like. I'm a workers first person but this is not a random worker this a major guy at halo studios that already had co pilot which is open ai so make the statement because he is mandated to.
@16BitHero I said I wasn't arguing with you in my last statement I was using our conversation to put facts on the web for people to read. Read the comment again
@ElectricWizard Be careful, making sense is a hard bargain 'round these parts.
@Sonofken 'facts'. I don't think you are the arbiter of all things video games. Have a good weekend fellow gamer.
If they start laying off everyone, their messaging will get even worse.
Helix will either not come out or be a disaster.
Microsoft and Xbox aren’t known for great messaging, so no surprise here.
@Netret0120
Backlash works! They saw it and realized they pushed it too far.
@ElectricWizard Have you only heard of Microsoft for the first time this morning? Poor optics that nerf their sales has been their MO for a very long time. They repeatedly push the boundaries to see what they can get away with.
Maybe they tried to buy favour with Sony by "increasing" PS Plus subs? Maybe they're so out of touch they don't know how local co-op works on platforms that aren't theirs?
Up or down, you don't publish the info they published with the slip of a finger. It was a deliberate communication they made, and now they've walked it back because the internet has blown up over it.
@Swandivetotheasphalt Yeah sure thing, I've never worked a day in my life and I'm in 40s because I'm reading what is a very deliberate statement as more than a mistake.
Using your own leap of logic, I'm feeling you've never passed a reading comprehension class in your life, and wouldn't recognise inference if it did a lap dance on you.
@darylb24 Common sense said it was MS choice. No other offline game I ever heard of requires PlayStation+
@lacerz Can't fix stupid, I'm afraid other games do not require PlayStation+
That's what happens when you let AI write your press releases.
So you still won’t be able to play co-op with your kids without first invading their privacy by making not one but two online presences for them to play something as simple as split-screen?
Modern gaming really is a big mess isn’t it?
@Othatguy ai don't mean to be that guy, buuut...
For nearly 6 years your PS+ sub, has been paying MSFT.
https://variety.com/2019/gaming/news/sony-microsoft-partnership-cloud-gaming-1203217532/
I cancelled my pre-order, the requirement for an xbox account was a bit rich (though I do have an old Live account from the 360 days).
But giving Microsoft access to my Sony account, not happening. You don't invite the devil into your house.
Knowing MS this will be some twisted attempt at using your info to weaponise their sales.
@11001100110zero that is not how it works.
@ElectricWizard The plausible reason is this wasn't a mistake, it was very deliberate choice that they've walked back. I've said that repeatedly.
And my reasons for the "mistake" are rubbish because how do you make a mistake like this? Simple answer - you don't.
Reading comprehension - try it out sometime. Desperate stuff indeed.
Wow Microsoft walked that back pretty quick. My original thought when this remake got announced was "what's the point, it won't include split screen". Turns out I was wrong but the truth is like all Microsoft's PS releases it won't install without needing internet download. So it'll just be added to pile, I will not be buying along with Dark Ages, Avowed, Indiana Jones, Flight Simulator, Oblivion Remastered, Gears of War, Starfield, all of your Cod games, Outer Worlds 2 etc etc.
Intr1n5ic I don't need to defend MS or Sony, I am just trying to offer an alternative view that it's always MS to blame.
I stand by my previous comment about your illogical bias for Sony, but it is a Sony fansite, so I should not be surprised.
@11001100110zero I go out of my way to not give Microsoft my money. What Sony chooses to do is out of my hands. I had an original Xbox and a 360, both of which I loved. Now I ignore them, and the Fable remake is their sole chance to reverse that trend. I am not confident in even that.
its cool like this https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2026/06/rumour-gta-6-price-potentially-leaked-by-european-retailer
