I have never understood buying a movie digitally that you can only stream. You're just asking for trouble. A physical disc is always my preferred method.

Studio Canal should have to refund all those who purchased their films through this service. Seems like a them problem, not a consumer problem.

@Blaze215 I believe there is a good chance you would legally be able to pirate something you'd purchased and had access to removed. Its certainly something that could be challenged in a court with a chance of success.

All the people in the comments on the GTA 6 articles tell me again how digital is the best and the ideal future for buying things.

So they were renting instead of owning the movies.

@4fold if I buy something, it should be mine. If im renting it for a certain amount of time that should be made crystal clear at point of purchase, not in T&Cs. The language should change to rent.

So many people are so many with indefinite rentals that it’s frightening.

For those fear mongering that it could happen to games well it won't due to different agreements and rules. Its also been shown games being dislisted due to licencing aren't removed from those who already bought them. Yes this sucks but its a different ruleset with Film/TV and is way more shady then games.

@EfYI I don't think we've had a notable instance of a games library disappearing yet. Store closures, but I think even the first consoles in the digital era, like psp, Wii, 360, PS3 still let you download stuff you bought.
That said, it's going to happen one day, either a company thinking they can get away with shutting off a legacy library, or worst case, the curator of a large library going out of business. Hard to imagine steam, sony, Nintendo or Xbox closing,but you never really know what's around the corner in this world.

Say what you will about the PlayStation Store, Steam, or the eShop, and likely the Microsoft Store too. At least when a title is removed from any of those platforms, if you paid for it, you usually get to keep and redownload it. I have not heard many cases of a digital game not being able to be downloaded by the people who got it, excluding P.T., but that was a free demo.

Articles like this is why I still believe that films and TV are best bought on Blu-ray and DVD.

Gaming companies can be very scummy sometimes, yes, but there are enough protections and agreements in place for that medium where I can trust that if I buy a digital game, I can keep it indefinitely.

@HotGoomba it's kinda crazy that they are allowed to do this. I wonder what the original wording advertising these movies at the time was. If the words 'own' or 'forever' were used, which was quite common at the time, they could be in trouble if someone tries fighting back.

I’ve never bought anything from that storefront so I cannot confirm, but I’ve heard statements to that effect from several sources.

I'm surprised this is allowed to happen within the EU - which generally does a far superior job of protecting consumer rights (and a great many other things) than the US or elsewhere.

I might be paranoid about the future of digital gaming but I'm not taking any chances. I have maybe fifty or more of my favourite 'owned' games also downloaded from Steam Rip and on an SSD.

People seem to be predicting there's going to be a crash in the games industry, so there's clearly a possibility some big player disappears. Dispite what it might seem to be there's no guarantee Sony or Nintendo or Xbox continue forever and all your digital games are safe to re-download forever.

Games can be delisted but you can still download and play them, just people can't buy them after they're delisted. But thanks to people's efforts, there's always ways to download abandonware and play it, even after delisting. Hell there's even mods out there that help games that used stuff like Games for Windows or even shaky modern OS compatibility to work.

I know movies and shows are a lot scummier in the digital realm cause they can just remove everything you bought and shrug their shoulders as a response.

This is why I'm happy having physical copies of films that matter to me. Music too. I may not buy as much as I once did, but if a CD drops from an artist I appreciate I ensure I acquire it from a reputable retailer. Film on the other hand, well. I'm happy with used, and if something special comes out I'll consider the UHD version. I'm less concerned about games, but consumer law is more stringent in that area. I don't think I've ever bought a digital film, and i sure as heck ain't buying a digital copy of music if there's a CD available.
One thing I really wish governments would clamp down on is EULA's, but legislation trumps agreements, so it's more of a bug-bear than a worry.

@Balaam_ Have no idea but i know its never happened on console. Take Marvel's Ultimate Alliance 1/2, they were dislisted because Activision lost the licence but anyone who bought them can still download and play them.

@DennisReynolds @Northern_munkey Server shutdown in an online-only game is to be expected, eventually, I guess. My concern is something like GT7 barely functions unless connected, although PD have shown (with GT Sport) they will remove the connection requirement, nothing is guaranteed. It's slowly creeping up on us and with ever more complicated EULA's who knows what we're agreeing to nowadays?

@naruball Thanks. I get the concern but games just have a different agreement to films. Also it kinda kills hype for an all digital future if they start taking games away and Sony and other studios know that hence why dislisted games aren't taking away from those who bought them.

This just seems like Studio Cannal have pulled the distribution rights from Sony. Whos fault it is is anyones guess. As you say, it sucks but even games can have their licences revoked, it's just very, very rare and normally online games that have just run their course. Or were rubbish like Concord.

And this is why I'm so adamant about physical, BluRay, Dvd, Vhs, I'll never stop focusing on physical over digital. It really is the difference between owning something tangible and being at the mercy of a service, a system or a server. From my cold dead hands.

It's also very satisfying to look at a wall of movies, games, books and so on, I don't get that by browsing Netflix, just a lot nothing that I'll never watch and then with everything else? it's all on some kind of unseen timer, here one day gone the next. I even collect cinema reels.

The saddest part is that the only way to actually own something is to pirate it.

I've never paid for a digital film, series, album or anything other than subscription services, and it seems I was right not to.

And people moan at us who are trying to preserve and prioritize physical over digital media. Buy your games / movies / music physically if and when you can.

The law needs to change to protect any digital purchases. But it won't.

if you are upset with sony , it sounds more like the movie studios pulling the license to the movies , so legally sony has to remove them from the service.

@Balaam_ Thank you, I like to try to track-down factory sealed horror too which is easy for USA tapes but harder for UK/EU. America has a huge VHS collectors market but their cases are cardboard so I don't want them. I can't really collect Russian that much because everything has always been bootleg, I prefer the genuine thing. I started with Disney like most collectors then moved onto sci-fi and once I landed on horror I never stopped. The original box-art is beautiful and it's quickly vanishing with 4K releases using newly developed art that pops but feels artificial (sorry Ravix)

Not a great picture, it's from when we were talking about movie collections on the forums. One of my favorite movies of all time is Suspiria, I have it on every format but always go for VHS. The same for The Devil Rides Out, an old and great Hammer Horror movie. I wasn't allowed horror growing up, I've made up for it now.

The weirdest movie related was for your consideration tapes from the Academy Awards, those were my thing for a while. Tapes they'd show the judging panels, many of those tapes made their way into collector circles. I still have the original Spiderman reel Sony ordered to be destroyed after 9/11. I can't find another in the world and I've looked. It's the original promo that featured the towers and the helicopter being webbed between each. It couldn't be screened.

I didn't really understand preservation until I saw books and movies being banned and destroyed in my own country, that's a part of preservation most people won't even experience. It made me more determined. All it takes is a service or App to leave or be blocked and it's all gone. There are ways around everything of course but this way just feels right, digital never does. There's nothing to hand down, one day I'll be gone and I'd rather see my books go to a library, not vanish into some online abyss.

I think also children learn from tactile things, if I did have a child I'd prefer to hand them a game box, let them read it, take in the art, then fire the game up. Tactile things and physical media create a discussion. With digital services I just scroll and end up watching nothing, it happened with Netflix again yesterday. I switched VPNs five times and still found nothing. Then I wonder what happens if you want to watch something specific for the sake of nostalgia and you can't find it on any subscription, take for example @Northern_munkey do you still have a physical copy of C.H.U.D lurking around? or have you not seen it in years?

@twitchtvpat Sony needs to negotiate a new contract with StudioCanal. They aren’t pulling their movies from Apple, Google or other retailers. That’s because they still have agreements with them and Sony apparently doesn’t want to spend enough to keep them. But Sony has a responsibility to it’s customers to renegotiate those contracts so they don’t lose movies like this. It looks bad when ONLY their customers are affected. It’s on both the studio and the retailer.

My DVD & bluray movies collection are sitting nicely on my shelf along with my games. They're ready whenever i want to watch or play them ☺️

More people needs to go back buying physical movies, games, books, and musics. But eh, this is what they got by going digital only. So eh, i can only say good luck to them 👋

@GirlVersusGame suspiria is also one of my favorite Argento movies along with deep red and tenebrae. I enjoyed opera too. If you are a fan of those giallo movies check out stage fright as that is superb.

This is exactly why I started collecting all my favourite directors' films on blu ray last year. Now is the time to buy the entertainment you love, before access to it is taken away or made unaffordable.

@Bizzy it’s why I pay extra for blu-rays for movies that interest me. I’ll pay for premium for physical movies. As I’ll always have them to share with friends and family. Plus be able to pass them along. No internet needed.

Also i'm not talking down to you its just you're talking about something else. The Crew was an online only game so if the servers are taking offline then well the game is now useless. This is pretty standard like it or not for online only games. Its not the same as removing a game that can played offline from your account.

This is exactly why I have never purchased a movie from them. They released that new Core app and I was like not a chance.

Physical media was, is and shall remain supreme. At least in my book.

That’s terrible. I abandoned physical decades ago (my kids and their friends accidentally ruined several disks when they were little and more importantly physical takes up space, which forced me to pick and choose what to dump for space considerations every few years)) and this doesn’t really change the calculus but it’s always worth keeping in mind the dangers.

Another excellent move from the pro-consumer Sony. Waiting to see how long until they decide to delete the games we paid for.

If Sony knew this was only licensed for a limited time, then they should have added that to the info in the store.

@Yor-sama Studio Cannal are one of the biggest film distribution/film makers around. They are mainly distribution now a days.

@Exerion76 That's nkt how distribution licences work though and normally are easy to negotiate from what I can tell. For whatever reason it seems SC and Sony have fallen short of value or whatever reason and SC have pulled Sony's rights.

This happens sometimes in the digital world. In some cases, as long as you purchased it, you can still gain access somewhere else. In this case, however, it has directly affected the consumer in the worst way.

@Northern_munkey I know Stage Fright well and the same director (Michele Soavi) did a movie in 1989 that though cheesy did genuinely terrify me. Argento wrote the screenplay. It was called The Church and one from the Demons series. The whole movie is crazy and really dreamlike, it sort of slowly pulls you in and makes you question up from down. It provided me with my first ever jump scare too. There's a scene where a demon smashes through a window and I didn't sleep for days. I think England banned it. I know The Vatican tried to ban it and only ended up condemning it.

The box on the left is the original UK cut that went through the BBFC and had a very limited release. The right is the revised Dvd cut, also for the UK. Even the tagline changed from 'it will make you squirm' to 'you haven't got a prayer', I prefer the original.

I like a lot of Soavi's work, especially Cemetery Man. I never really got into Lucio Fulci's work, I prefer the supernatural not so much gorey zombis. The exception being the remake of Night of The Living Dead, which a lot of people haven't seen, or know of. It was directed by Tom Savini (Sex Machine from From Dusk Till Dawn) and stars Tony Todd (Candyman) he's created so many practical effects for so many horror movies, it feels like a real passion project and most likely was. I think Argento stuck because his themes and expert crafting can sometimes be applied to reality. Tenebrae is a perfect example, it highlights the darker side of human nature. I could say the same thing about Deep Red and like Suspiria it features Globlins on the score. I think Suspiria made such an impact because it reflected what I thought my time in finishing school was, I didn't have the words for it, then I saw that movie and 'well obviously they were witches'. It was more than just a movie with beautiful visuals and a perfect score, it was really cathartic.

Isn't this the second time Sony has done such a thing, by making purchased video content unavailable. I'd hope people would be wiser by now and avoid purchasing movies on Sony's store.

It's also surprising that one of the largest film producer worldwide cannot figure out a robust and reliable digital film distribution service.

Like the article said, legally this is all probably aboveboard. And I do absolutely support paying for digital goods like games, movies, music, books etc.

But morally, I have no qualms about people downloading (aka pirating) the media they have purchased elsewhere for personal backups.

People have made the argument that this isn't going to happen to our digital games, because they are tied to a different rules and licensing than movies, and for the most part that holds true. But using precedent to argue it can't/won't happen in the future is granting a lot of trust to these companies. I'm not sure they've earned that from me.

Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo probably know they'll burn through a lot of customer-goodwill to suddenly delist our libraries from a few generations ago, but seeing as digital libraries have only really existed since the PS3 era (two whole generations ago), at some point one of them are going to test the waters unless it's very cheap to maintain the infrastructure.

I don't see what the big deal is. If you've watched a film once you don't really need to see it again. If, for whatever reason, you want to watch it again you can pay somewhere else for it, and it will still be cheaper than a ticket at the cinema. This is such a nothing burger honestly...

The only digital movies I brought was when the DVDs/Blu-Ray discs used to have a digital code included then when the site (I forget the site name) closed down and I have to move my digital movie collection to Google I noticed that any 20th Century Fox film (who had just been brought out by Disney) could not be carried over.
But this isn't the first time I heard about film companies shafting their customers who paid for movies in digital form. There was some fuss a few years ago when Apple removed films from customers collection due to losing the the licence for some films so there really needs to be some laws brought in to stop this because the film studios are quick to complain about lost revenue when it hits them but they're happy to basically steal from their customers.

@ThatOldGit It's difficult, because you can't make another streamer or service supply you it for free, just because you lost it somewhere else.

1. Stealing implies illegitimate ownership of a good.

2. Digital licenses don't grant you ownership.

As Nerdy Paul said above, though, the problem is DRM. I think these actions should straight up be made illegal. Otherwise, I think piracy is a legitimate form of social insurrection.

You can certainly own a digital license. You can also steal a digital license (for example, stealing someone’s PSN account would mean you steal all their digital licenses). I’m not sure what your point is on that one.

But, yes, it is a concern that people are generally duped into thinking they have bought goods rather than buying a license that may be limited in duration, T&C’s or no. At the least, I think these companies should be obligated to disclose how long they hold the rights for, so the customer can decide whether to risk them renewing or not.

They should not be able to do this. In the old days you paid once to own something, now you pay in perpetuity to own nothing. The law needs to change.

This is why I still by physical games where possible, Blu-ray movies, and audio CDs.

I'm fortunate in that I rented a few movies on PSN back in the day, but never "purchased" any.

Of course, what Sony should do is what the movie industry did when it shut down its Ultraviolet service.

For all the movies you'd bought which were available on Google Play Movies, they gave you a code to get a free copy on there.

This whole "it's a licence, not a purchase" thing needs knocking on the head from a legal standpoint. That said, whatever Sony's issue is with the licence providers (I'm guessing they upped the licence fees and Sony don't want to pay), it's not the customer's fault and they shouldn't be left out of pocket as a result. Either renew the licences, arrange to provide codes for the movies on Google, or refund the customer with the price they paid.

@GirlVersusGame I remember the church. I think he made the sect too but I'm not 100% certain. I enjoyed fulcis films especially the beyond and house by the cemetery. The great late Tony Todd was superb in the night of the living dead (as he was in everything) and savinis fx were outstanding. I think savinis best fx was in maniac as those scalpings were just disgusting. I've enjoyed this rather horribly gruesome trip down memory lane..thankyou 👍

The problem with the Blu Ray is that you need to own a working Blu Ray drive for ever, even when they are obsolete museum pieces that can't be purchased new anymore, and modern panels don't support the cable connection.

Plus of course you haven't got to lose the disc or it suffer some form of damage or degradation over time...

As I've said before, my Steam games from 2003 all work. The only potential issues are when they won't run properly on modern hardware e.g. because CPU's are too fast or OS's aren't compatible.

Am I going to play Half Life 2 again? No, so I don't give a monkeys anyway.

Bit like all my old ZX Speccy and C64 games I owned in the day. I could easily emulate them now but I can't be bothered to play them. I'd rather watch a few minutes of a Youtube video for the nostalgia kick.

What would I do with my cassettes anyway? I couldn't plug the computers into my TV or monitors; not without expensive mods.

I'm not sure how well the cassettes would have survived all that ageing, especially in the heat of the loft. Getting replacement cassette players could be tricky too, noting there is something like only one chinese firm manufacturing heads and they are crap compared to those in the day. Not sure they'd handle some of the fast loader games. Cassette decks could be pretty sensitive and struggle with some games even back then.

I've never bought any movie or music ever and I never will. I will always pirate them.

If Sony knew this was only licensed for a limited time, then they should have added that to the info in the store.

There's "Purchase or used of this items is subject to Playstation Terms of Service" at the bottom of every products in PS store.

This is why you as the consumers needs to read Terms of Service carefully before you signed up for PSN and access to PS store. The moment you click "Agree" then that means you agreed with all their terms. They can do whatever they want with your digital purchased either you break their terms or not.

@Dogbreath You've just shown your age mentioning fast-loading cassettes (I remember them too) but you seem to have forgotten the RF aerial connection!
I plugged my old Amiga 1200 into our TV a few months ago and the display worked fine for the best version of Sensible Soccer.

I remember the revelation with my PS1 when I discovered RGB scart and spent years (until 360 launched with HD via those phono cables) trying to convince my friends to use that instead of RF!

I'm actually shocked, that older computers will work with RF still. I guess the TV can handle the old PAL signal!

@Exerion76 Well a video game is incredible value for money when you take into consideration a holiday or tickets to a theme park. If you pay £69.99 for example to play The Last of Us 2, even if you only play it once in your life, the value proposition is off the charts. I just can't bring myself to care all that much if I ever lose access to any of my games, it just gives me an opportunity to pay the creatives I love an extra bit of pocket change if I want to play it again.

Makes me glad I've preserved all of my movies and games from before everything went digital. I have countless hours of entertainment that I've already paid for and its mine to use as I please... meaning I never need to support Sony or their creatives again

@ThePlaystationStan that's actually how transactions work. A product is supplied by the distributor for the consumer to own. The consumer can then watch that movie or game until their eyes bleed, or sell it to someone else who will enjoy it once I'm done with it.

I have no words anymore. Sony is killing itself and damaging the very industry it exploits for profit. This should be illegal licences or not, what has been bought has been bought they already have the money. I hope they get sied out the behind for this.
