Hardware snoop KeplerL2 predicts the PS6 may cost about $960 to assemble right now.
You may recall he previously tipped a $760 Bill of Materials (BoM) earlier in the year and was bullish about a subsidised $699 launch price for the platform.
But in an updated post today, the sneak – who’s accurately leaked a lot of console news over the years, including the specs of the PS5 Pro – said that the cost of the components has jumped by over $200 in the last three months alone.
If accurate, it means the machine would cost Sony close to $1,000 just to assemble – without even accounting for shipping, storage, marketing, and other associated costs.
Remember, Microsoft has tipped memory prices to double in the next year or so. Lenovo doesn’t expect the prices to come down until at least 2030 – if they ever do at all.
As a result, KeplerL2 believes Sony should stick to its plan and release the platform regardless.
He pointed out that if prices keep going up, a delay would only increase costs. He added that it’s unlikely Sony will re-engineer the system even if it does postpone it, so may as well stick to its course and hope costs come down in the future.
It’s worth repeating that PlayStation is not alone in this predicament: all console manufacturers are finding it increasingly difficult right now, as an AI-led run on components has pushed prices sky high.
Even Apple was forced to raise prices on many of its products this week, and if one of the biggest tech companies on the planet is not invulnerable to this, then what hope does anyone else have?
I really can’t even begin to imagine what kind of meetings are taking place at Sony right now.
