Re: Sony's Not Done Finding New Ways to Sell You The Last of Us

Come now people. Making money off of things like this is the lowest hanging fruit for a company. It's merch and related things like this that help keep video games from costing over $100. It's like complaining that Disney makes toys based on their most beloved movies. It's the business. And it really doesn't actually harm anyone that this exists. Don't want it? Don't buy it. Think it's overpriced? Wait for a sale. Think it's the coolest thing ever? Buy it at full price. It really is that simple folks.

@UltimateOtaku91 Not only that but subscriptions make big budget games not worth the investment. Nintendo can spend 6 years making a Zelda game because they know that the investment will be worth it when the game comes out and sells millions of copies. If it can't be sold individually and goes straight to a subscription service, it makes it extremely risky to spend so much time and money on just one project that might not bump subscription numbers that significantly.

It is now completely proven that subscription models disincentivize making big budget projects. We even had Netflix executives admit that releasing Glass Onion on Netflix without a theatrical release left money on the table. If people like games that take years to make like Breath of the Wild or God of War then they should be 100% against subscription models becoming the norm.

@BAMozzy Most games do not require downloads. Most games do have day one patches but you are not required to download them to start the game for most disc games. Also Ultra HD blu rays can hold 100GB of data. So storage isn't the reason only 85MB are on the disc. It's just sad to me how much the industry seemingly now holds physical media in contempt.

Re: Reaction: Game Key PS5 Discs Are a Disgrace, and Sony Should Put a Stop to Them

This is how I'm handling these physical releases that don't have the game data on them going forward:

I could just suck it up and buy them. This is bad because it incentivizes companies to continue to release physical versions with no game data. I could just buy the game digitally instead. This is even worse. Game companies want physical media to die. They want there to be no second hand market to compete with for prices. They want you to pay exorbitant fees for games you don't get to own. Buying the game digitally is exactly what game companies want. So I won't do that either. Now the only benefit these faux physical versions have over full digital is that they can be resold. So. I'll buy them from the second hand market. I'll wait a few days after release and buy them for a few bucks below full price from a second hand gaming store. This is the best available option. I still get to support a brick and mortar store. I get to play the new Doom close to release. And I don't directly support scummy companies and their scummy ways. It certainly would be better if they actually just released a full physical version. But this is the best option that is available to me in these circumstances.

I will say though that if companies ever go full subscription model where you don't even get to own the digital copies of games. I will drop the hobby full stop and just play my old games I already have.

I might make it my personal policy to only pay full price for new games that have a real physical release. I want to play Doom. But if they're going to release a fake physical version like this without transparency. I'll happily wait until the digital version goes on sale. Now something like Donkey Kong Bananza? I'll gladly pay $70 to play a game like that day one on a real physical release.

Re: Just Like the Game, The Last of Us 2's TV Adaptation Is Getting Review Bombed

People pretending that this isn't review bombing from angry gamers are wrong. People who watch films, prestige TV, or read books for pleasure have way higher levels of narrative understanding than comparatively low narrative IQ gamers. Killing off main characters is literally not at all uncommon in stories. It just isn't. Anyone who's ever read a few decent books from cover to cover, watched a few decent films, or watched a few decent TV shows can tell you that. The issue is that gamers are still viscerally upset that a buff woman killed their favorite video game character and are review bombing the show to try and make themselves feel better.
