Switch 2 Can't Achieve a Great Experience on Big Screens, PS5 Boss Implies 1

Sony is keeping a keen eye on the Nintendo Switch 2, which has been obliterating sales records worldwide since its release last week.

But while it believes PS5’s new competitor will bring energy to the gaming industry at large, it’s not overly concerned about its impact. That’s because, according to boss Hideaki Nishino, the “PS5’s level of performance is required to create a great experience on big screens”.

He explained: “We have a differentiated strategy, so PS5 is designed for an immersive gaming experience, and this includes the innovative DualSense controller features as well. We believe PS5’s level of performance is required to achieve a great experience on big screens. And in this way, we have provided a unique offering to players and creators in this current console generation.”

Nishino isn’t living under a rock, however, and he admitted that the multiformat nature of the industry today does present challenges to PS5. For him and the rest of his team, the goal is simple: to ensure PlayStation provides the best place to play.

“Publishers are increasingly shifting towards being multiplatform, so more platforms can run the same game, which is great from a creator's perspective,” he started.

“Among those platforms, our mission is that we will continue to be best place and to play and to publish. As such, we have empowered our creators to leverage our offering and services to create amazing, unique experience for players, with high engagement and a great monetization opportunities.”

It’s interesting that Nishino explicitly references the “big screen” experience here, at a time when more and more enthusiasts are talking about handhelds.

But to be fair to Sony, its best-selling PS Portal accessory has helped it to provide an option for users who prefer a handheld experience at home, and the executive noted that those who own the accessory play 30% longer than those who don’t.

But what’s clear is that in order for PlayStation to remain relevant, it’s going to have to innovate on the platform experience. With games releasing everywhere these days, features like the DualSense have become differentiators. It’s going to need similarly compelling features on the PS6 to help its hardware truly stand out.
