The fact that over 80% of PS5 consoles sold are the disc edition. Makes me think this whole narrative around "impending death of physical media" is completely manufactured. People still want physical media. Even if they don't buy 100% physical media. If physical media is truly so worthless people wouldn't be overwhelmingly paying extra money for a disc drive.
"Nintendo keeps pushing these Mario games down our throats. I think they misunderstand that millions and millions of sales is not the same thing as enthusiasm. Every single system has multiple Mario games. Sure they sell well and I keep buying them. But I'm just so tired of Nintendo shoving the plumber down our throats."
-Nintendo fans if their brains functioned like Sony fans.
@Slayer25c That is exactly why a subscription model is untenable. If you what big budget first party games like Zelda or Naughty Dog stuff a subscription model will make those kind of games completely unprofitable.
Please no. Actually having to make a game worth buying is why games are good in the first place. As soon as subscription models take over it no longer pays for companies to invest 6 years making a masterpiece like Zelda or Final Fantasy.
Can you control your party members in this version? Tried the ps2 version years ago and had to put it down. Not being able to directly control your party members was a nightmare. Would love to give it another go if improvements have been made.
Can someone explain to me why everyone hates Naughty Dog now? Like literally just a few years ago it seemed like everyone loved them and now every time a new game of theirs gets announced there's a ton of hate. I don't get it.
@johncalmc Unironically true though. Here's a hot take. Old people often know what they're talking about. Remember during the 80's and 90's all the older people decrying the rise of video games? Remember when they were saying that kids staying inside playing video games will lead to them not getting exercise? Being isolated? Not socializing with others? Not going outside and getting sunlight? All of that was absolutely 100% true. We have an epidemic of isolation and depression going on right now. People don't go out and socialize. Depression and feelings of loneliness are at an all time high. So is social anxiety. And all of this was obviously foreseeable to all of the old people that everyone else ignored regardless.
This author writing some amazing game industry PR. Comes off like that's the gig he really wants. The idea that he wishes he grew up in this era of live service garbage is absolutely beyond ludicrous. You'd seriously rather get some skins in a sub par shooter for Christmas than a timeless masterpiece like Ocarina of Time or Final Fantasy 7? Get real. Here's the thing. In 20 to 30 years, people will still be talking about games like Ocarina of Time and Final Fantasy 7. Nobody will care about dead online live service games like Fortnight. Remember Pac-Man 99? Friday the 13th the Game? That's the future all of these live service games face.
Martin Scorsese is famous for talking about the impending doom of real cinema. Unfortunately video games are in a similar place. Only nobody seems to be willing to speak up about the awful future of soulless subscription games we're to face. The digital future was supposed to make gaming better. Instead I long for the days when a company had to make a game worth buying.
It seems they're starting to shy away from putting in the work though. All their live service nonsense is the opposite of why they're successful to begin with. I hope they course correct. Nintendo and Sony are keeping gaming alive. If Sony falls the industry will be in dire straits.
Yikes. The simple reality is that physical media is still the only way to play most older games. Some of which are absolute classics. The death of physical media will not be good. A game can be removed from a digital storefront in the snap of a finger. Physical media is such an important backup for preservation.
@GamingFan4Lyf I would highly recommend this game to you. Its story is definitely something you should experience for yourself. Especially if you liked Automata. The biggest complaint about the original version was the combat system was kinda meh. But by all accounts I've read it seems to have been drastically improved. So I really think it's worth it. I personally think the first Nier has a better story and soundtrack than Automata. Though I'll admit I'm probably the minority there. Definitely give it a shot though. If you feel burned out immediately after playing Automata, maybe take a little break. But I think you should definitely give this a shot.

@TrickyDicky99 True. If Sony continues their current path, Nintendo will be the sole platform for actual video games. It's disappointing.
