As a fan of Skyrim Iāve really wanted to try out Avowed, but after seeing it compared to Skyrim, I was kind of put off as some elements seem more basic than Skyrim.
Can anyone whoās played both give me some insight? I know the discourse online can be a bit negative, so I want some level headed honesty.
It seems they only started developing this after Starfield launched. There was a story about the person tipped to be the game director leaving (and seemingly being screwed over). And it sounds like Bethesda can only make one game at a time.
The Steam score has risen to 41% (from 33% a few days ago).
I think a lot of people just wanted to hate on the game from the outset. Itās one of the immaturities of the gaming community which can often be a bit of a hive mind.
If given a chance they can improve it further. There was no need for the hate it got.
My wife gave me two options for dinner tomorrow. I said I would make my decision after an episode of Emily in Paris. I have now decided. But I will not reveal what I have decided until later.
I watched an excellent video about films these days being oversaturated because of technology being too good and filmmakers are losing the ability to use techniques that make a movie look cinematic.
I have a feeling the gaming industry might have the same problem.
@AhmadSumadi thanks for taking the time to respond.
Yeah, MMOās have that problem of keeping us addicted. Iāve been through it with World of Warcraft and then Guild Wars 2.
Youāve actually just talked me into holding off on ESO, because now Iām more of a console gamer I donāt think I can afford to be locked into an MMO right now.
But that game sure is tempting. I love Skyrim, and running around ESO for the couple hours was a lot of fun. I can see why you spent so much time in it.
Over Christmas I played it up to level 10 but I wondered if I was joining too late to catch up.
Iām assuming there is too much for me to do and there are players that are way more geared and wealthy and Iāll just feel like a noob the whole time.
I remember that cover. I used to have every copy of Sega Saturn magazine and a large amount of CVG and Games Master. But one year my parents forced me to clear them out and I lost em all (I think they were tipped).
I would go back and read them today if I still had access to them.
I always enjoy Christmas themes in games, as Iām a sucker for all things Christmas.
AstroBot is the best we have on PS5, and itās very special.
However, Christmas NiGHTs into Dreams is still the most special Christmas experience Iāve had with Christmas in games and it was both magical and unique back in 1996 when it released.
I also really enjoy Guild Wars 2ās āWintersdayā events also.
@MARl0 heās definitely up there, but not as well known by a long way. And even Miyamoto and Kojima are not know to probably 60-70% of gamers.
And even for engaged gamers with aging brains like mine (which has played thousands of games since I was 4, owned every major console, and probably seen Romeroās name in the credits more than most), I still needed the helping hand to pinpoint who he was exactly.
As soon as I saw āDoomā it all flooded back and the article got my interest. But all Iām saying is that just needs to be included in the article.
@Balaam_ I know you have a bee in your bonnet about Skyrim. But it deserved Game of the Year.
Dark Souls may have spawned an iconic franchise, but test them both on their own and Skyrim is the better game.
Skyrim as a single game has sold more games than the entire Dark Souls franchise and been ported to everything, including VR. Itās an extremely in depth and immersive experience that has not been properly replicated.
Think of Skyrim as being to The Elder Scrolls franchise to what Elden Ring is to the Dark Souls games. It was a game that brought a great formula to the masses.
Now if you want to compare Skyrim to Elden Ring, thatās a conversation.
But Skyrim beats Dark Souls 1 every day of the week.
The last two articles I have read (about this guy and del Toro) both tell me they are ālegendaryā game or film creators, but donāt tell me what they have made in the past.
So Iāve had to leave the site to find out on both occasions.
It helps the reader to have things we can relate to, just mention their two biggest or something. Iāve watched and played games from both. But had no clue who they were without that context.
This game is such a bargain. You can buy the full main game and DLC on pre-order for less than £30 and the RRP is only £35.
Itās a no brainer as someone who hasnāt played it before. And from this interview it seems the devs are very passionate about what they are creating.
@Jammer yeah, I know some friends getting PS5ās over Switch 2ās for both money reasons and to expand the option (their kids already have Switches that play 99% of Switch games).
My son even chose a PS5 over the Switch 2. And we already have a PS5 in the house. But he has to compete with me for it.
@darylb24 we are talking about this year though. So looking at the price alone this year is at least a reason.
@darylb24 first of all, I was making a dumb joke. Because everyone says Nintendo is expensive and everyone moans about the economy (Although, to be fair things are pretty grim).
However, this year, PS5 has almost always been on sale and is almost always cheaper than Switch 2.
Right now the PS5 Digital is £289, compared to £400+ for the Switch 2.
And yes, Black Friday has the best deals, but all year there has been options to buy a PS5 cheap. Itās been discounted all year.

Re: PS Plus Essential Games for March 2026 Announced
Monster Hunter Rise and Slime Rancher 2 are great additions in my mind.
Not sure why everyone is so salty this month. š
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 621
Real life Power Wash Simulator (washing my car).
Real life FC26 (watching the football).
And a whole load of Slime Rancher because my kids are obsessed with it and now we own it on three consoles so we can play at the same time.
Re: 'I'm Confident in the Direction We're Headed': Under-Fire PlayStation Boss Tries to Explain Baffling Bluepoint Closure
Blah blah blah
Yeah, we donāt care. This decision sucks. The gaming community isnāt buying it. And we are worse off for it.
Shame on Sony.
Re: Avowed Dev Hopes RPG's Biggest Criticism Has Been Fixed for PS5 Launch
@ShogunRok thank you. That is exactly the response I was looking for.
I think going in with the understanding that it is not Skyrim might actually help. And the enhanced combat and better narrative is actually a draw.
I think I will check it out.

Re: Launch-Aligned, Ghost of Yotei PS5 Is Selling Better Than Tsushima
As someone who hasnāt played the game. Thanks for all the comments that arenāt ātalking politicsā or dunking on others.
Reading what people actually like about the game and their experiences getting the platinum etc have sold me on giving it a go.

Re: Highguard Is Already Struggling to Hold Players' Attention
@Oram77 no offence, but saying āno one really asked for this gameā is a bit of an elitist mindset.
The creative vision of a team is a good enough reason for a game to be made.
A niche audience is also a good enough reason.
There are countless games no one asked for that make our gaming world more vibrant.
Yes, games have to make money and be financially viable. But we shouldnāt gate keep games just because they arenāt for us.
This game isnāt for me. But the hate it is getting is overblown.
Re: Today, You'll Finally Get to Form Your Own Opinion on PS5 Shooter Highguard
PS2 games were the best.

Re: PokƩmon Dev Game Freak Steps Up the Production Values for Beast of Reincarnation on PS5
Itās still surprising to me how PokĆ©mon games are so ardently defended, even when Game Freak shows they have the budget and ability (made with the money from PokĆ©mon sales) to make better games.
PokĆ©mon is a multiple billion dollar franchise that is very profitable. And yet they make AA games (at best) that donāt even have full animations and almost no voice acting. There was more voice acting in this trailer than there is in the whole of the latest PokĆ©mon game.
I can understand peopleās love for PokĆ©mon blinding them a bit. But the people making the franchise donāt have the same love for it as you do. If they did theyād make better games. They can easily afford to.

I hate seeing games killed early.
Itās taking something away from the community that could have enriched it.
Re: Rumour: Xbox's Cancelled Cyberpunk RPG from ESO Dev Emerges in Leaked Video
@AhmadSumadi do you still play ESO Online?
Over Christmas I played it up to level 10 but I wondered if I was joining too late to catch up.

Or is it different to other MMORPGs?
Re: All PS Plus Games Available Now
PS+ Extra is basically all I need for my gaming.
Tons of amazing games, too many for me to complete, and great variety for my family to enjoy.
I went Premium though so I could force my kids to play old PS1 games I enjoyed. Hehe
Thanks for the complete list.
Re: Sony, Xbox, Nintendo Publish Shared Statement on Player Safety in Games
@Bigumamiflavor personally I donāt want to give my ID to everyone.
I think there needs to be safer controls online, especially for children. But I donāt want the government to over regulate everything either.
Iād much prefer parents and the community being the safe guarders.
Re: Maybe There Is Still Hope for the Final Fantasy 13 Trilogy on PS5, After All
Iām not sure why we need to put ādivisiveā when describing this game series.
Itās generally liked, it was a commercial success, the fastest selling in franchise history at the time, and spawned two sequels.
XIII and XIII-2 have reviewed positively on Meta Critic. With Lightning Returns being mixed.
They arenāt the strongest entries in the series, but I always feel divisive or controversial is always a bit harsh.

Street Fighter 6 for my multiplayer fix.

Re: Reminder: Astro Bot Has the Best Christmas Level on PS5 and It Isn't Close
@SeaDaVie If I remember correctly, we got it as a disc with the Sega Saturn magazine or something like that.
I even checked with my brother and he canāt remember properly either. But he still has the disc.
Also it was really short, like one level. But as a kid, who loved Nights, it was amazing.

@MARl0 I dunno, 95%? Most donāt know who the makers of games are.
Not everyone is famous like Miyamoto or Kojima.
Itās like how most donāt know the band members of bands. They just know their work.

Re: Sony Accused of Using Generative AI Art for PlayStation Advent Calendar Promo
Itās not the AI art Iām concerned about, itās the fact this has no relation to PlayStation.
There are enough Sony owned characters that they could have put a picture of each per day and made people interested in this.
Day 1 - Aloy
Day 2 - Ratchet
Etc
They could have made something people actually cared about rather than just random characters. Whether they are made of AI or not.
And to be honest, grabbing and resizing artwork they already had would have probably been easier.

Either way, letās hope this game reveal lives up to the expectations.

Re: Japanese Ghost of Yotei PS5 Sales Are Just About Hanging On
Every Switch sold has the capacity to play physical games.
Most of the PS5s sold in Japan are digital only.
Nintendo is winning (even dominating) but I donāt think the physical games chart tells the full picture at all.
