Sony and Naughty Dog get a lot of stick for how much focus they put on The Last of Us, but it seems as though they at least entertained the idea of revisiting Uncharted.
Speaking on the Sacred Symbols podcast, YouTuber Michael Kemp — who made that video dissecting Amy Hennig's version of Uncharted 4 — says Naughty Dog was planning to remake Uncharted: Drake's Fortune for PS5 before pivoting to The Last of Us Part I.
He alleges the studio, along with PlayStation's Visual Arts Support Group, was working on it as early as 2018.
Apparently, they remade an early cutscene from Uncharted 1 using up-to-date visuals as part of a pitch for the project — but it was decided the game would need much more than a graphical upgrade to bring it up to modern standards, and so The Last of Us was chosen instead.
"They remade that [scene], basically with Uncharted 4's graphics as a test, and they presented that and went, 'We could do this.' I don't know if they got approved or not, but then they realised, okay, Uncharted 1 needs a bit more modernisation in terms of the levels and set-pieces. So they decided, 'No, we'll not do that, we'll do one that needs a little bit less modernising,' and that's how they ended up with The Last of Us [remake]."
This tallies with previous insider information, as well as a report from Bloomberg (paywalled).
Adding to all this is that Uncharted-related files show up within The Last of Us 2; a couple of years back, a dataminer made this discovery and shared the results on Reddit:
So, if all this is true, the question now is whether Sony will return to this Uncharted 1 remake project. I could see it happening eventually; I don't know whether the movie sequel is still happening, but that seems like a good opportunity to release a "new" Uncharted at the same time.

😩
Would’ve loved to get an updated Uncharted 1 over TLOU 1. Only because TLOU already looked great as is.
“so The Last of Us was chosen instead.” Don’t tell me that. We were all thinking it, but you don’t just say that to someone 🤦
Old news, it was reported visual arts was going to do an uncharted remake but was seems to expensive so they did the last of us until naughty dog took it from them.
Wrong ***** choice to make last of us
I mean Uncharted 1 remake would've taken tooooo much time. Intergalactic would've released in 2035 after that.
Sony should remake the first Uncharted, Resistance and inFamous.
Nobody sat there and asked the question, which would benefit more from a remake!? Who asked for another/the same depressing postapocalyptic game? Uncharted > tlou
I do not like the last of us, always felt it was incredibly slow and dull, I do like Uncharted.
I understand their choice, but do not like it one bit.
Dang. If only Sony had a studio that was good at this sort of thing
I feel like that since GoW trilogy are getting remade then Uncharted 1 - 3 deserve remakes.
@Americansamurai1 Yeah, this is just corroboration of something we've long known.
Obviously, Uncharted would have benefited more from a remake, but they wanted to get something for the least amount of effort. Uncharted would have needed new assets, tweaked level design, new mocap, etc. Not only did TLoU Part 1 reuse the original mocap and level design, they were able to take a lot of assets from Part 2 and repurpose them here; something that wouldn't have been available for Uncharted.
Disappointing, but understandable.
TLOU is a great game, glad they remastered it (sequel is terrible). Now remake Uncharted (don't touch the writing Neil!) instead of that Intergalactic slop which will bomb if it ever comes out.
@Atreus97 Naughty Dog might not have wanted anyone else remaking their games.
People forget that a TV show was coming so it would have been ideal for them to have something new to market alongside it.
@Atreus97 Even with Bluepoint gone, they still do: Nixxes.
Given they have sat around practically doing nothing for 7 years, I think they could have remade both of them. Especially once Intergalactic bombs.
I like TLoU more than Uncharted and even I know that was a piss poor idea.
TLoU is a great game that didn’t need a remake and thus… the remake was just sort of fine? I dunno. I never bought it, but played on PS+. I’d have bought an Uncharted 1 remake. That game has aged far more, honestly.
Around the end of the PS3 era, it feels like devs figured out what works in AAA games, but, at the beginning, they were still figuring some things out, you know?
Arse. They chose a game that didn't need a remaster instead of one that did.
@TheDarts Agreed. The first Uncharted has awful gameplay even in the Nathan Drake Collection. The Last of Us was perfect on base PS4 in technical terms bar the understandably flawed frame rate.
TLoU Remastered was really excellent. As sharp as Part 1 is, I don't know if the juice was worth the squeeze compared to how Uncharted would have been. Of course, then we'd want Uncharted 2 done as well.
I mean: would I personally have preferred Uncharted? Of course. Does TLOU make more sense in synergy with the TV show? Of course.
Can't wait to learn more about intergalactic.
It was a bad call Ripley, a bad call.
An Uncharted 1 remake would've been really cool to see.
Would love an uncharted 1 (and 2, 3) remake!
I just want another Uncharted. 4 is so, so good and TLL is fun but not meaty enough for the series to finish on.
@AK4tywill @Americansamurai1 yeah this is old information that was confirmed long ago by the people involved.
Inside Gamer is presenting this as a scoop by them and new information when it’s not. Bet PushSquare even has articles on the original story.
You know it's a slow news day when old news is getting recycled to seem new again.
So they chose to remake a game nobody wanted remade instead of one everyone wanted remade. …and some people wonder why this industry is suffering. Literally nobody listens to the customers.
Makes no sense to me seeing as uncharted is much older, looked worse and people hadn’t played it as recently.
