Hello. My name is Stephen Tailby, and I’m fine, thanks.
Welcome to a new feature on Push Square, in which I recount every game I’ve platinumed. It's a verb now, alright? "You gonna platinum Balatro, mate?*" It's a verb, and it's all good. We need to make peace with this now, because it's gonna make things easier in the long run.
I've platinumed dozens of games across PS5 and PS4, and I can't figure out if I'm happy about that or not. I think it changes every so often; there have been periods in which I've gone seriously out of my way to achieve a platinum Trophy, and others where I don't give the damn things a second thought.
This feature will allow me to reflect on every game I've cared to platinum, and I've yet to work out if that's worth doing, or entertaining in any way.
At the very least, it might be fun, and the potential for fun is what we all buy into when we take a chance on a new game, right? Am I likening this feature to a video game? In a sense. Both are potentially fun.
Anyway, here's the first issue of Going Platinum. If you like it, please let me know, and if you don't, well, I mean you can let me know as well, but just be nice about it.
*The answer is no.

Platinum Trophy #1: Rocket League
Date Earned: 11th November 2015
Dopamine Index:
For the longest time — by which I suppose I mean the seven years between their introduction and me earning this platinum — I didn't give one solitary honk about Trophies.
Making their debut in 2008 on PS3, at the time I probably thought they were kinda dumb, and let's be honest, they are.
I mean, they're fun to collect, but their sole purpose is to keep you playing, and to keep you playing on PlayStation specifically.
If you look at it that way, all you're really doing by collecting Trophies is keeping Hermen Hulst happy. He wants user retention to go up, just like all the other numbers on his fancy charts.
He and all those big execs at the top, quaffing champagne from Trophy-shaped chalices and laughing as you earnestly attempt Fall Guys' 'Infallible' Trophy for the 286th time. That's it, keep playing, they think, a faded Concord standee wilted in the corner.
Sorry. What I was trying to say is that I didn't care about collecting Trophies one bit — until I got my first metallic taste of a platinum. Rocket League was my very first, and what a blast it was to get it.
I think an important reason why I look back on this platinum Trophy so fondly is because I wasn't really trying to get it. I just enjoyed playing the game so much that I got 99% of the base Trophy set from pure, natural fun.
I played that dumb soc-car game alone, with friends, for 10 minutes or three hours, slowly getting better but never making it more than just a pastime. I do think there was a moment when I realised how close I was to the platinum, and thought it'd be cool to get it for this game I'm enjoying so much, but that's about as far as it went.
That's my favourite type of platinum, and it's something I'll probably say many times as these go on — ones unlocked through a sheer love of the game, whatever it is.
Rocket League has changed a lot since I was actively playing, but I've no doubt that I'd have a good time with it if I booted it up right now.
Cheers, Rocket League.

Ooh, I’m looking forward to this series, sounds like a lot of fun!
During quarantine, I got more serious about platinuming and glanced at my trophy list and realized that I only needed one more trophy for Rocket League’s platinum, something like ‘complete all tutorials’. It wasn’t my first plat, but it was fun.
So, now I’m 1 for 1 with Stephen. Excited to see how long that stays.
Played this a lot back when it came out on PS Plus and got the Platinum too. Such a fun game and I don't remember having to go out of my way to get the trophies

I like the format! Informative, especially since it gives me insight into a game I’ve not played. I’ve been trophy hunting for a long, long time. Unsurprisingly then, my first platinum was Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune on PS3.
And now years later I have just hit 500 with Ghost of Yotei.
Great idea for a new series Stephen! I look forward to reading about all your platinum trophies. I’ve also secured the Rocket League and Fall Guys platinums through pure enjoyment of both those titles.
I’m 1 trophy off of getting the platinum on Rocket League.
The only one remaining… joining a party and playing a game with a friend. 😅
Damn right it’s a ****ing verb now… in fact it’s been a verb! 😏
I like it! GG Stephen!
My first platinum? Midnight Clud: Los Angeles! Fell in love with the series with that game. And then they never gave me another one!
Most recent platinum: Echoes of the End
Currently working on Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden
My favorite platinum is The Witcher 3. So much so that I’ve platinum’d (Yes. It’s a verb!) 5 times. Thinking of going for #6.
✌🏾
Cool idea for a series of articles!! I myself don’t care for rocket league as a game, but congratulations on the platinum. As for things I’d like to see in future articles, perhaps a legitimate discussion as to what should be acceptable trophy criteria and what shouldn’t be permitted.
@Kienda "playing a game with a friend" ah yes truly the biggest flaw to any real gamer 🫠
Nice article! Looking forward to more of these 😃
I'm genuinely looking forward to seeing this feature more on the site.
Nice feature, although i dont chase trophies anymore, even when i did it was just if the game was fun and the plat was not too hassle. My first plat was uncharted on ps3, i got it exactly a year after geting my first trophy on it 🤣. Only got 51 plat at moment. I now dont take much notice of trophies when playing games.
This is a great idea (and quite a funny read). My first platinum was Bloodborne and I’ll never forget it.
I think it took me less than a month as at the time it was a "trophy whore" and relentlessly played churning out what I needed to do. As with some games now I juat saw them as mini challenges, and enjoy them now and again. My love of plats has deteriorated now and only play games I want to play (whether easy or hard) and if i can get the trophies, great. If not, so what?!
I enjoyed Rocket League many moons ago but i never have the motivation to get plat trophy.
I kinda forgot what's my 1st plat, i think Batman: Arkham Asylum?
But this is a nice feature and i hope PushSquare keeps doing it on every week along with Quiz.
Love this as a feature. Also have a very similar view to you on trophies
I don’t think I have any platinum trophies. I don’t even look at them to be honest. I have a friend who is a completionist and I swear it stresses him out more than anything 😂
@Oram77 I actually play with my kids on the same PS5, but apparently that doesn’t count for the achievement. Haha
My first platinum was Infamous on PS3. I have 12 now, could've been more as I've left a lot of games at 80% and 90%, will get back to them when I have the time.
I’ll look out for Going Platinum in the future, been hooked on those shiny trophy’s for quite a while now. Never played rocket league as it’s not for me, my son has the platinum as he loved it. I was quite late to the trophy hunt as my first was the order 1886. Currently going for number 155 Hogwarts legacy on PS4
@Quintumply I certainly enjoyed our Rocket League shenanigans, Phteven!
This is a really fun feature 👏 I only ever go for platinum if it's a game I actually enjoy playing. Otherwise, it ends up feeling like a chore just to see a number go up which sucks the fun out of it.
I do have the plat for this. Spent a fair few hours on it before realising its would be possible, so in much the same way I didn’t set out to earn it. But it’s a great game and what I think makes a great plat - one you can simply earn just by playing, not by going out of your way to do strange things.
@Balaam_ "What shouldn't be permitted"??? The sense of self entitlement of "trophy hunters" is borderline parody at this point.
Looks like a great feature. My first platinum was Littlebigplanet on PS3. Fairly straight forward, collect costumes, ace some maps, publish some levels. It was a team effort, I didn't even know what trophies were. When they took down the servers they took with them the chance of ever getting platinum again.
Got this plat over 5 years ago but still remember it fondly too. It’s games like this, without any real narrative pull or real completion, that really benefit from platinum campaigns.
I’ve been playing a lot of open ended games recently and often now get bored before finishing the plat challenges, haven’t got one for 6 months, whereas I used to get over two a month on average. More that I’m just getting bored of flat gaming I think.
You never forget your first… For me it was PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. Ah, the memories.
My very first platinum came from the PS3 rerelease of God of War, all the way back in December of 2009. I just now realized while typing this that that's only two months after I started dating my eventual spouse, and 81 platinums later we're still going strong!
I think that's my favorite thing about trophies. It's not about collecting the valueless NFTs, or about the satisfying chimes whenever you takedown 50 enemies with a boomerang or whatever. The best thing for me is scrolling down the list, looking at the dates of my various digital accomplishments and letting my memories of the game take me back to the memories of my life that surrounded my playtime. It's like journaling, but with less details and more fun!
Cool feature! I am not an active trophy hunter, and I don’t have a lot of plats compared to many, but trophies are great.
-They are a cool diary of stuff you did in a game.
-They sometimes suggest fun ways to play a game you don’t initially think of.
-They are totally optional, and notifications for them can be turned off if folks don’t like them.
Great system!
I do have a plat in rocket league. I got it so long ago I don't even remember when. But I'm sure it's almost a decade now
i’ve unlocked at least one platty a month for the last 6 years so i think i enjoy trophies more than most people so i’m looking forward to this series on life wasting 👍
first platty was uncharted drakes fortune on the 3
Now this is a feature I can get behind. I have been collecting trophies since they first dropped on Super Stardust HD way back! Loved them ever since and think I always will. I also have the platinum for this on an old account but these days and I’m at ultra levels of sadness keeping a 100% profile. Can’t wait to read more Stephen ✌🏻👌🏻
@Metonymy that’s a great first platinum mate 👏 Bloodborne is just next level! I too have this one
A nice read @Quintumply and as a trophy hunter this is a great new addition to Push Square.
My taste for that delicious dopamine hit each time that pong (is that the right name?) sounds started with the platinum for The Order: 1886.
Just like you I wasn't actually going for it, I was just enjoying the game as much as I could, but after seeing that I had completely 100% finished a game it made me want to do it again.
Hermen will be happy too because it has made me buy more games over the years, going from a couple a year to averaging one a week.
I dread to think how much I've spent since that first taste.
I try not to think of the platinum when I start a game, but once I find that I'm enjoying myself I can't help but chase for it. I love that trophy sound, so any game that rewards me for already having fun is good in my book.
My first platinum (out of my measly 32) was Spider-Man (I didn't start playing PS until PS4, and that was late in the generation) and it just felt natural to get it as it was for doing everything I wanted to do in the game anyway.
A good read, thank you!
JUST SAY 'PLATTED' - you're welcome😁.
Yeah, platinum is just a waste of time, If you ask me. I put 60 hours into Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden and I just checked the list of trophies I still needed and they are all predatorily grindy in nature. Ain't nobody got time for dat.
The trophy list is probably good for making sure you experience EVERYTHING, and the plat isn't impossible if I chose to replay the game for a different ending. But I know now that it would have to be in at least a year's time.
Are there easy to follow guides for plats? Like, how to best go about it from A to Z?
@Veritas7Ax
That's equal measures insane and impressive!
Great feature Stephen, keep em' coming 👍
I don't have the Plat for Rocket League but I did enjoy my time with it, kinda blew up out of nowhere at the time - fun game.
WWE Legends of Wrestlemania on PS3 was my first Platinum trophy!!
@Splash_Woman completely agree. My 1st Plat reminds me of gaming with my little one in our 1st home - great times!
I’ve played a lot of games to completion and have yet to get a single Platinum. I’ve just never felt the desire. A lot of them seem to amount to busy work or tedium and I’d rather just play another title.
very nice article! 🙂
thanks for sharing 💙
@GamingGod Just out of curiosity, how hard is it keeping a profile at 100%? I mean do you play the game twice- once on a dummy account to make sure there's nothing breaking that streak?
Whilst thats either (as you say) sad or something sort of masochistic hobby is uo for debate, but you can't deny the commitment to that bit - especially if a game randomly drops a new trophy list via update, let alone dlc!
You probably make me and my roughly 60% completion, 374 plat list look quaint 🤣
Oh and as its part of the discussion, I think legends of wrestlemania was also my first one and then not soon after (thanks to the time sink of online) red dead redemption, so a bit of a taster for my hard vs easy games I play... and I can say whilst ive played some dross in my lifetime, I never once resorted to the "legendary" hannah Montana (as it is in some "plat" circles)!
@Anke id say "ping" personally is the sound effect, but we all hear noises differently that aren't named. We all know a "moo" or an "oink" as it was taught, but Sony never clearly defined what the "pong / ping / ding / dong" is! 🤣
@EfYI seems like i posting millions of replies this morning! But you can look up "trophy guides". There's a few dedicated sites that may have them. Im unsure if im allowed to post them, but as a general rule of thumb, type "(game name) trophy guide" and some may or may not come up..
Its mainly down to if certain YouTubers or websites have compiled one.
I usually use them at the end of a playthtough now to see if its a short term thing I need to do, or if its gonna be another 100 hours and I can safely delete the game haha.
@Kienda
If I remember correctly, I just made another account. Might have been on the ps4 and I played against it on the ps5, but if you have streaming on Plus maybe you can play this other account with one console.
I'll never understand how can someone have so strong nerves to play multiplayer game more than two times in a row for more than two days. Even if they pay me for that I would not do it...
Congratulations, Honestly I would never be able to make this heroic thing.
Best thing I ever did was turn off trophy notifications. They (well, achievements) sounded like a cool idea at the time - effectively "bragging rights" and a modern take on the hi-score table, but the vast majority of trophies are dished out for simply playing the content you've paid to play. Or they're boring collect-a-thons.
I've got some fairly spicy platinums (WipEout Omega Collection, Sekiro, Titanfall 2, amongst others), but they forced me to understand the games and achieve some level of mastery of them - which is what a hi-score table would do.
I don't actually know what my first platinum was off the top of my head... (I checked...my first 3 were God of War 1,2 & 3 on PS3)/
But i've soured on achievements and trophies as most of them are just bad, often making you like a game less by the end of their run. Games that don't do this I still occasionally go for. But i've only had 2 this year having had over 80 platinum's before.
@MrPeanutbutterz Agreed. It's not that they are inherently bad, but most games lists are bad making you jump through hoops that are no longer fun. Often you will like the game less after the platinum and never play it again.
There are some excellent ones out there too, that sometimes makes you play the game a different way and really understand and respect the depth of the game's mechanics. Often these are fun too. e.g.
Lvl 304, 3334 trophies and not a single platinum
Still looking forward to the articles, enjoy reading people's passion for gaming
I do have a lot of games with 89-96% trophy complete, but I've never felt compelled to get those last few
@themightyant Yeah a lot of trophies feel like box ticking exercises for the developer just to say "yes, we have a trophy list". Even Titanfall 2, most of it is playing the short (but sensational) single player. The "... Becomes The Master" trophy is where it's at, as it forces you engage with the core mechanics. I remember when I finally got that one and I jumped back in online. I was spotting new routes to wallrun and got so much better at multiplayer because of it.
WipEout Omega Collection has one for doing a barrel roll on Moa Therma - the track is mostly flat with lots of mag strips. I'm a veteran of the WipEout series and always did a barrel roll here, so I popped it without even realising. But if you didn't know the spot, you'd look at it and wonder where can you squeeze that roll in, which will fundamentally give you faster times on that track. Similarly "Beat Zico" - I can race Anulpha Pass almost blindfolded from doing that trophy.
@GamingGod Nicely done! Yeah, much like the author, I didn’t really care about trophies at all until Bloodborne sort of broadened my horizons on that front. I think earning a trophy for every boss really hammered it home.
Been playing Rocket League on-and-off since it first released and finally got the Platinum last year, first trophy earned in 2015. 9 years of slowly grinding to earn it, I'm proud of that one.
@Veritas7Ax
500 plats??? 👀💀
Wtf. Nice (I think?).
I mean. I game tons as well (since the mid 80’s), but I have my ’chievs split between Trophies and GamerScore (Xbox). I have a couple plats, and a bunch of ”1000/1000 GS”. But nowhere near 500! Then again, sadly I find not that many games keep me around much after I’ve completed them. Plus I often find myself stuck playing the same MP games forever, taking up time (Overwatch 2 have taken up way too much time). But I do play a whole bunch of SP games as well, sadly not enough to plat many.
But out of those 500 plats you got, how many are cheap ”10 min to plat” games? Be honest 😂
@Slideaway1983 haha this is where a lot of research is needed frankly!. I check up online if there are known glitches or the servers are shut down etc as to not start something that cannot be finished. Lots of things go into it in that sense. It can be a risky thing to try and do but so far so good 😂. Even playing brand new games is risky if like me you are quite time poor for example, i wanted to do Assassins shadows so got it in launch and absolutely loved it… and then the add on dlc’s started which require hella grinding some of them. So every other month I seem to be re-downloading it and finishing more trophies again but you make your bed you gotta lie in it right. lol. I enjoy it though I get some might scoff at it (my mrs certainly does) 🙈.
As for the games you mention, RDR I did on the PS3 years ago, a fabulous platinum to have but very time consuming, legends of wrestlemania man that takes me back to my early days too!. I remember a group of us grinding the aufweidersehn petrovic trophy on GTAIV til daft o clock every night another classic trophy hunting moment for me. And as for Hannah Montana… any trophy hunter who has that on their list is worse than a 100%er… 😉 jus kiddin
Also in regard to what you say about dlc and new lists being added, this is where I feel sorry for a 100%er who started was it COD MW2 remake? The one where they keep adding the full COD games as DLC packs.. they must be fuming at that situation lol terrible from Activision
@GamingGod cool detailed response! Completely get you in all of that like grinding until the early hours on RDR as opposed to GTAIV - i did try back in the day but due to the "floatiness" of the game I couldn't get into it. Ironically I played a bit of gta online when it first launched and buggy as heck, so I have more trophies on gtav than iv and I played iv online more - servers autopopped on 5!
And I also get what you are saying about AC - I remember my mate "having" to keep playing it with the i dont know what you call them - "tourist" updates where you just find stuff out about landmarks, areas etc and I went round one day and he was just walking around looking at stuff- that was one of the days I realised my hobby was a but naff as I thought there's museums and the Internet for this, I dont need a 300 quid console and 50 quid game to learn it 🤣
And Aye, we've all played some weird stuff for trophies... some I wish id never played, but years ago I had massive depression and drank so it was one of two things: a therapy to escape whilst drinking, or something to do whilst drinking- made the games harder through 🤣 sound shapes and 58 lists, anyone? 🤪🤣
And yeah RDR was something else. Wanted to fo back to it for so long but was never a fan of the online when on my own, but now the ps5 upgrade is out soon, I pulled the trigger and bought it in the sale this last week so ill have that to grind through myself. Though atm im still playing crossworlds (also just bought), katamari (new one) and a few others ive started and just get lost in the shuffle haha.
And yeah finally, id be so narked back in the day with that COD thing - luckily I never went out and bought them. Im not an online gamer per se- the odd few yeah like borderlands to help out mates etc - so if you wanted to do those, id happily help! -but the nature of COD the last decade plus put me off them as they were basically a one trick pony. I gave my ps3 to my stepdad tears ago and he bought them all 2nd hand and I played the campaigns and found them too easy and generic too. Maybe thats just me though! But yes, to have to complete like 4 COD for 1 100%?
If I knew anyone that complained at that, I'd simply laugh and explain that they are the ones that love the franchise and trophies so much they blindly followed like the sheepy lemmings they are 🤪
Cheers for the reply - as I say if I can help with anything, feel free to add me on psn and drop me a message. Worst i can say is no i don't have it. I may not go full on trophy hunting now, but I do still help out the community if someone asks!
As sonic would.probably say "gotta get plats" (stretch, i know!) 🤔🤷🤣
I like this idea for a series. Pursuing trophies as a hobby is both pretty dumb and pretty fun. Its a paradox. I used to rationalize it as I wanted to see everything in a game the developer created, but I later realized that's just a funny way of saying I have neurotic tendencies. 215 platinums and counting.
Rocket League for a first platinum is tough. My first was Midnight Club: Los Angeles which took some serious grinding. My proudest is Wipeout HD (Beat Zico).
I like trophy hunting quite a bit, I do feel it genuinely enhances a game to have this underlying metagame progression to push you to play the hard mode or go for that speed run. Just to experience the game a different way, push you out of your comfort zone, etc.
It's even broadened my horizons to play games I never would've before. Trophies turned me into a fan of racing games - I was into basically just RPGs and horror before PS3, but I "discovered" this genre pursuing trophies and realized I liked it better than my old mainstays. I never thought I could play hard modes and always went for easy. Now, hard and extreme modes aren't that intimidating at all and brought me into tougher games like Demon's Souls. I certainly would've dodged these games thinking they were too tough if not for trophies, which would've been a shame.
Now we just need Sony to properly implement a trophy leaderboard.
@AhmadSumadi
My first platinum as well waaaay back in 2009. Kind of a tough, grindy one - props on that.
Nice idea Stephen and a very good read. I have the same relationship with trophies as you!
Rocket League was my first platinum. Currently working on #47 (Ball X Pit). And yes, for my sins, I do have the platinum trophy for Balatro.
Rocket League wasn't my kind of game. Multiplayer games are notoriously grindy for trophies.
I have 88 Platinum trophies.
Just beat Resogun on Veteran difficulty last night on PS3. It was a nightmare to do.
Platinum #89 is in my sights.
1st platinum I got was Resi 5 on PS3, good times with a steady co-op buddy at the time. I don't get the chance to get as many anymore but I still go out of way every now and then if they look achievable enough (and the game is half decent).
I thought I was hot with 52, some of you guys are next level.
Uncharted drakes fortune was my introduction to trophies and my very first platinum. I immediately saw the appeal but I was more than fine not bothering with trophies for a lot of games, If I was in the mood and into the game i could get a particularly hard platinum but then leave an easy one on 1% if i couldn't be bothered.
It changed for me around lockdown, I had psnow, access to a bunch of games at once and decided I'd platinum everything I played and I've stuck to it ever since with just a few exceptions. I probably had just over 100 platinums before lockdown, I'm now approaching 400.
@UnlimitedSevens YES! The capture the flag trophy was the worst! ✌🏾
@MrStark I rinsed Resogun twice on PS4 and Vita for those plats, I remember the hunt being such an adrenaline fest, top, top game!
Fair segment and the particular trophies, how you overcame some in particular ways. I would say a segment of weird things you've experienced in games, but not sure how easy to define those moments are in comparison. Footage or photos or just text well explaining things. Either way.
But if it's a bunch of boring games (there is only some much I can care about the technique and a game itself) then eh pass. But just those you have platinumed and experiences I mean sure, not a bad idea for a segment. But just assuming we will hear a lot of the same in these so not really my kind of segment but I respect the idea though, it's a good new segment.
Then again I've played many games I enjoyed with more exciting ideas and not platinumed them because why would I for all their garbage for the platinum, or didn't have a platinum or only those ideas in games without trophies at all, or from a different era story beat or 100%ed or self made challenges/restricted played without upgrades other then those needed.
I platinumed Grid Legends and how that game had some dumb trophies and dumbed design for a 'decent' racing game that didn't annoy me as much as Grid 2019 or other bad ones of 8th/9th gen. I'd easily rip Grid Legends appart for some of its dumb modern design garbage that had no impact on the game but had to fit the modern design goal quote. XD
For me a Platinum doesn't mean much, not just for the games I have a platinum for either, being what a few VNs, an FMV one recently, old games I know that got remasters, not a lot because most games I can platinum aren't that challenging or if they are I know that old game inside and out, for most others they have some much garbage little things, or multiplayer trophies I'll never get or care to as don't play multiplayer. I can't be bothered with trophies unless it's fair enough, if it's some awkward combat moves to pull off on many enemies, or in a certain way such as spin attack (just an example) 8 enemies and there isn't many 8 enemies to easily bunch up situations, I'm not going to be able to do those trophies, or difficulty ones or awkward collectibles. I'm just not and refuse to do them.
@Briarback
Thanks man! You can totally get there, you sound like a pretty dedicated gamer yourself, and you remind me of my buddy in some ways, especially splitting time with PlayStation and Xbox like he does sometimes.
I also get "stuck" with some games, for good reasons, usually lol. Just enjoying them for a while, Borderlands, Destiny, etc. Just fun to enjoy games too and not always get lost in trophy hunting. But... hunting is also fun hahaha.
And lastly, I'm proud to say I have no shovelware on my profile haha. There are a handful of autopops in there, like maybe 5-6 total, but otherwise it's all legit stuff. Closest and "cheapest" game I've ever done was Inksplosion, and that at least had some nuance and small strategy to it. It wasn't just a "hit x to get 10 gold trophies" game. Was like 30+ min plat.
