Re: Devil May Cry 5 Has Microtransactions for Some Stupid Reason

GodOfPie

You know, this makes me a bit confused about Capcom. Being a long-time fan of Monster Hunter, I'm surprised that Capcom hasn't taken advantage of the RNG elements of those games' core gameplay loop of praying to RNGsus and the Desire Sensor for monster parts, and just completely destroyed those games with micro-transactions. MH even has free DLC updates, so it's sad to see micro-transactions in a different Capcom game. Hopefully the are strictly optional and their presence doesn't make going through DMC5 any less fun.

Re: Yakuza 3 Shows Its Age with New PS4 Remaster Screenshots

GodOfPie

@GKO900 I recently finished playing 4 on PS3. I was surprised at how nice the character models look. They look detailed and soft. I think 4 would look great remastered if they just bump the resolution up to make the game world less blurry.

I got 4 during a sale because it was cheap and we got 5 from PS+, but that was back when we didn't have any Yakuza games on PS4. After finishing 4, I decided to play Yakuza 0 on PS4, so I'm not sure if I'll ever get to playing 5 on PS3 or just wait for the remaster and play that. And of course, we've got Yakuza 6 on PS4, but I don't think I'll play that for a long time...

Re: Poll: Do You Want More PS4 Games to Take Advantage of Gyro Aiming?

GodOfPie

I'm more interested in pointer aiming using the PS Move for first-person shooters like can be done with VR technology. Ever try CoD on Wii/Wii U? A few tweaks to the settings, and the controls were extremely quick and precise, so I'd always destroy traditional controller users, including my friends. It was fun. I like those types of controls for first-person shooters because you point and aim, like your character does (also because I can move my hand around more naturally than having to just rotate a controller); however, for third-person shooters, I think gyro controls might be better because rotating a controller can give you a similar feeling of how your perspective rotates around your character.

But that's just what I think of motion controls for shooters. I've found that I don't really like motion controls for other games.

Re: Review: Monster Hunter: World (PS4)

@mookysam I've never had a problem using the camera on the 3DS because the L button can be used to control the camera instead of the on-screen D-pad. On the 3DS, it was set by default that if you pressed L once, the camera would look at the monster, but not lock onto it forever, and if you double-tapped L, the camera would face in the direction that your character is facing. I changed this to Type 2, which simply switches the L tapping functions. So thoughout Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and 4 Ultimate, I mainly used the L button for the camera, but also just used the on-screen D-pad when it seemed convenient. You could also re-position and re-size the on-screen D-pad, so I set it closer to the face buttons for comfort.

In the World beta, they now have the camera set to Camera Lock by default, which works like Camera Lock usually does in other third-person games involving swords and whatever, where you have the camera always looking at your enemy. I found that this limits the camera freedom that MH had before, but there is the option to change the way the camera behaves in MH World, so you can change it to be Target Cam like in the previous games, where you press L1 to quickly look at the monster, but you are still free to move the camera with the right stick. I find that this works best for me because I can look at the monster whenever I lose track of it, but I can still control the camera as I run around because I'm not always right next to the monster. Using the analog stick instead of the touchscreen is also more natural, so using a controller now is a welcome addition. Camera Lock also seems disorienting at times if you are fighting something tall-ish. And when I'm running around a monster in a circle, I press L/L1 quickly to constantly look at the monster as I run, so you can also simulate Camera Lock with the Target Cam setting.

So while you can free cam the game by just using the right stick, I would recommend you do a combination of free cam and Target Cam for the best control of the camera.

I praise the Target Cam because I feel that it would work well in other games too. For example, I've been playing Bloodborne for the past year or so, but I haven't beat it yet because I decided to try and Platinum it, so I'm doing Chalice Dungeon runs, which are like side-quest fights (idk) that are separate from the main story. There is one boss that I cannot beat because I have trouble using the camera while fighting it. It's called the Bloodletting beast and it looks like a large dog without a head. During the second half of the fight, a large worm thing comes out of its neck, which increases the beast's attack range. Anyways, during this fight, I've tried to fight it using lock on, but it's fought in a small cave, so if I get pushed near a wall, the camera derps out. I've fought it without using the camera lock (free cam), and while I did progress, I still needed the camera lock at times because I needed to focus on the beast. Standing under the beast is how many people fight it because he can't really hurt you when you are there, but camera lock messes up, causing the camera to look up in various directions. Free cam doesn't help if you constantly have to adjust the camera manually. So, here is a case in a non-MH game where a Target Cam system would work wonders.

But anyways, yeah, hail Target Cam! I hope you enjoy MH World, if you get it.

Re: Monster Hunter: World Will Push PS4 Sales in Japan, Says Former Famitsu Editor

GodOfPie

@Fight_Teza_Fight Hahaha, you should try out the demo for Toukiden. I've never felt that MH was "too Japanese", but Toukiden takes the Japanesiness and bumps it up x1000. At the time, I wanted to see how similar Toukiden is to MH because it's somewhat of a MH clone and I wanted to see if it could fill the PS4 void in my heart, but I didn't really like it. Luckily, MH World is coming.

Re: Hands On: Monster Hunter: World Is Shaping Up to Be Something Very, Very Special on PS4

@WanderingBullet Well, you know, the Switch Axe is an ax that can become a sword or something. What I think it great about it is that there is a set of attacks that you can do with it in Axe mode and another set of attacks in sword mode. The main thing about the Switch Axe is that you can chain these two move sets together.

For example, in ax mode, the main way I try and begin a combo is by pressing Triangle-Circle to do an upswing. The best attack that ax mode has is where after an upswing, you mash Circle and your character swings the ax left and right over and over while you keep mashing Circle until you either run out of stamina, or you go into doing another attack. That's usually what ax mode is about: swing the ax a bunch of times, which uses your stamina. Then when you are low on stamina, do other ax attacks until your stamina is back.

You can also begin your attack combo other ways, and still mix in the upswing then left-right slashing into it. You can, for example, press the left stick forward and press Triangle to stab forward with the ax, then press Circle to a sweep with the ax, then go into Triangle-Circle (or I think you can just press Triangle in this case) to begin upswing land.

For learning such a weapon, I'd recommend you try using it only in ax mode until you are comfortable with the ax move set. After that, try using Sword mode by pressing R2 to switch into Sword mode.

In Sword mode, your axe becomes a sword - pretty kewl. While using it like this, it consumes energy stored in a phial, which is shown in the top-left of the screen. Every time you swing the weapon around in Sword mode, you use a bit of this energy. There are various slashing combos that you can figure out by just mashing Triangle and Circle in different patterns, so Sword mode isn't very difficult. Once you run out of Phial energy, you go back into Axe mode. You can wait for the Phial energy to re-charge on its own, or you can reload it using R2.

Once you can use both modes individually, you can experience the the glory of the Switch axe. You can switch weapon modes mid-combo! If you are doing some fancy combo in Ax mode, then press R2 during an attack, you can usually switch into Sword mode and immediately do a Sword attack. This also works the other way, where you can switch back to ax mode while swinging the Sword mode around.

Also, in Sword mode, you can do a burst attack by pressing Triangle-Circle. This makes you stab your Sword axe into a monster and you have to mash Triangle for a bit, then your ax releases all of its Phial energy into the monster as an explosion.

Anyways, I know the beta is over, but if you have any interest in MH and maybe even have a 3DS, I'd suggest trying Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. While the combos for each weapon in that game aren't as fancy as they've made them in World, 4U is where they also made a few improvements to the move sets moving on from 3 Ultimate.
(Why 4U and not Generations? idk I don't like Generations as much)

It seems that I've written a mini-guide about Switch axes lol. The Charge blade works similarly, where you attack in one mode, attack in another mode, and can switch between them mid-combo.
Charge blade is about charging your weapon with energy by doing attacks in sword and shield mode. Once your phial gauge glows, you can press R2+Circle to charge the phials in the blade. Then when you switch to Axe mode, your attacks are charged and each hit uses one phial of energy.
There are also more advanced things about the charge blade, such as that you can first put your phial energy into the shield instead, then charge the sword. This makes your attacks really strong. And if you think the charge blade is pretty neat, look up "Charge Blade Guard Points".

If you care to know, I've sunk 2000+ hours into MH3U alone. I think that I have 1500 in 4U, but a measly 400 in Generations. idk.

I've been pretty busy the past few days, but I've been able to play the beta now and then. Today I played 4-5 hours straight with a friend. So far, I absolutely love the new combos they've added to each weapon. The Switch Axe, my favorite, has really become such a fluid weapon, even more so than what it was in 4U.

Probably the only suggestion I would give anyone would be to change the camera settings from Lock-On to Target Cam like it's been in the past games. I find that it helps to be able to have the camera look at the monster whenever you need it to, but also have the camera constantly free for you to control manually as you move around.

Re: Review: Hatsune Miku: Project Diva X (PS4)

GodOfPie

@DarthPablo I'm not sure if it's Prime member only, but the PS4 version of Diva X is $39.96 like the Vita version right now. I had pre-ordered it months ago before this price was shown and got the 20% Prime discount, but now the actual price is discounted by 20%, so I'm not sure if it's the same discount or a separate one.

Re: Ensure You Have Enough Cash for Resident Evil 4 on PS4, Stranger

GodOfPie

@sinalefa That's pretty much what I was about to comment. RE on the Wii is pretty neat. August 30th has been Diva X day for quite a while. Not even RE4 could get in the way between that and my PS4. I'd probably pick it up in the future though, just because I would love to play Mercenaries with my friends.
