Re: Poll: Is Ghost of Yotei Better Than Ghost of Tsushima?

DixyViking

I have really enjoyed both games. There are some improvements in yotei, particularly in the variety of side missions. I think Tsushima edges it for story and I preferred Jin as main character, although Atsu becomes less one dimensional as her story unfolds. Although I enjoyed the different weapons in the roaming combats, I preferred the duels with the katana in Tsushima, they were somehow more dramatic.

Re: Poll: Are You Sick of Soulslike Games?

DixyViking

Maybe it's because I'm now past half a century old and my reactions are not as fast as they once were, but I am getting a bit frustrated that I cannot really enjoy many of these soulslike titles. I am cognisant of the fact that I am running out of life and feel I just cannot justify grinding the same level or boss fight 20+ times hoping I get lucky enough to get through it if I give it one more try.
I feel it is a shame that life long gamers like me are being denied the chance to enjoy and complete these standout titles.
While I appreciate that the younger gamers thirst for genuinely challenging games and it's great they are getting what they want, I also think some game designers forget they are in the entertainment industry and people don't want to fork out £70 for some entertainment that they can only complete a small percentage of.
My suggestion is making games with lower difficulty settings if you need to use them, or having the game make things easier for you depending on how many times you have already failed.

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Rise of the Ronin?

DixyViking

I've been playing for a week now, character up to level 20, but it seems I have plenty left to do. The combat is good fun and pretty challenging at times, I've even died a few times playing on easy (getting old and slow these days). There are loads of weapons to choose from and I like the customisable look mechanic; even though the vast amount you can carry around is a bit daft, 2000 items is the max limit, but I suppose you are just meant to suspend disbelief on encumbrance.
I remain a bit confused by the story so far and hoping that I'll "figure it out" as I progress, but why you would align with Pro Shoganate faction I can't work out given what happens at the start. This is not a GoT 10/10 for me, but a solid 7/10 and maybe going to 8/10 if the story improves as I progress.

Re: PlayStation Fans Torn on Prospect of PS5 Pro

DixyViking

I just don't think the PS5 Pro will provide any valuable benefits, as the games being produced currently are not even challenging the base machine. Given the time it takes to develop games and the desire to make the games playable by as many gamers as possible, it seems very unlikely that many developers will target the capabilities of the PS5 Pro solely. Any few that do will also be eyeing the PS6 market which we are told is only a couple of years away. I did have a PS4 Pro as it did provide discernable benefits but I think this time around I will just keep saving for a day one PS6.

Re: Poll: Are You Playing Rise of the Ronin?

DixyViking

Started this RotR yesterday and I'm enjoying it so far. I had to drop to the easy setting pretty quickly though, as I'm getting too old to have to replay boss fights 20+ times to progress. I loved Ghost of Tsushima and played Tenchu to death back in the day. RotR feels a bit of hybrid of these classics, though not as smooth and beautiful as GoT it has more weapon options and the switching between allies mid combat brings something new.
The skill progression is not explained very well, but that seems to be a common issue with many games these days, requiring multiple internet searches for explanations and advise on priorities. That being said the new skills I have got thus far have been of clear benefit. Still early days but I would give this 8/10 so far.

Re: Naughty Dog Details The Last of Us 2 Remastered Upgrade Path on PS5

DixyViking

I will definitely be getting this upgrade and replaying one of the best games ever made, on my PS5, for £8 it's a no brainer.
You folks who still have a copy in the cellophane may as well do this too as you must have more money than sense.
I just hope that Naughty Dog do something similar with the latest TLOU1 upgrade as even a fan like me could not stomach paying £70 for a game I have already bought twice before and have played through about 5 times.

Re: PS5 Is Now Above PS4 in USA, While Its New-Gen Rival Flounders

DixyViking

It looks like PlayStation is winning this generation's hardware battle again by miles, the PS4 out sold the Xbox one by 5 to 1 and it looks like this generation will do the same or even better. Microsoft are clearly making so much money from their other revenue streams, that they simply don't seem to be bothered that they are damaging the gaming community by making these software house purchases and turning their games into Xbox exclusives. Surely any software company would prefer to be able to sell their game to both PlayStation owners and Xbox owners, but Microsoft seem to be testing whether these exclusives will get them a larger market share, but it does not appear to be working.
I absolutely loved Skyrim and played it to death with every race and gender, but even that burning desire to play Elder scrolls VI will not persuade me to buy an Xbox! I guess I'll have to continue replaying the fantastic Baldur's Gate 3 and hope Microsoft will one day relent and make their new games cross platform. If they don't then these software houses will surely see their profits diminished.

Re: Bungie CEO Laments 'Sad Day' for Sony Studio Following Layoffs

DixyViking

I am sorry for those that lost their job, but I can't say I'm surprised that Bungie is losing money. I bought Destiny when it came out and have never forgiven it for being one of the most boringly repetitive and irritating games ever and did nobody in the development team think that different planets of the solar system have wildly different gravity and perhaps that fact should influence the jumping that was so integral to navigation. The PVP was so riddled with cheats that it was pointless to try and compete in. The requirement for teams to be formed outside of the game for raids was clique forming and very excluding. Then when you finally ground your way through hours of doing the same missions over and over in the hope of getting the best gear to drop; guess what, they bring out a new iteration and all that amazing gear you got is suddenly a load of poop, and you have to start all over again. Needless to say they never got another penny of my hard earned money!

Re: The Last of Us HBO Exec Touches on Joel's Fate in Season 2

DixyViking

@Fiendish-Beaver I believe Bella Ramsey is currently 19, so she is as old as Ellie in TLOU2 therefore no need to age her.
I do agree the second season will probably spend a few episodes filling out characters from Jackson and Ellie's realisation of what happened to the Fireflies at Salt Lake City. However Joel has to die as depicted in the game at some point, as the murder is the motivation for the entire bloody revenge only begets more bloody revenge tragedy that is the story arc of TLOU2.

@Voltan it is more accurately a fungal infection apocalypse, the infected are not dead and as such are not Zombies. So much more scary that cordyceps fungi really exist, just hasn't made the leap from arthropods to mamals yet...

Re: Reaction: We Need to Talk About PS Plus Premium

DixyViking

I am disappointed as having upgraded to premium I find that although I had successfully been able to stream games through "now" in the past, with premium I have been unable to stream a single game as I just get a message to say my Internet speed is too low. I feel I should have been informed of a minimum speed requirement for the streaming to function before I committed to paying for a service I am unable to access. I haven't tried the game trial yet, can anyone tell me if the time limit starts when you have completed the download or when you begin the download? If it's the latter then this service will also be useless to me, as it can take over 24 hours for me to download a 50Gb game.

Re: PS5 Remake The Last of Us: Part I Has Gone Gold

DixyViking

I loved TLOU and played it through on every difficulty level, then bought the remake and prequel and completed it once more. I got part 2 on day one and loved that too, they are both fantastic games but although I would like this new version too I can't help but feel a bit cheated by Sony/Naughty dog, £70 for a game many of us have already bought twice before is blatant profiteering. I my opinion they should have offered the new version at a discount for those who have already paid for this game and helped make the franchise as successful as it is.

Re: New BioShock Set in a Fictional Antarctic City in the 1960s

DixyViking

@KidBoruto Top tip is use a power then shoot, otherwise enemy are much harder to head shot. The first two games are brilliant and still look good, you really should play them as they are absolute classics. Infinite didn't quite do it for me as I preferred the darker setting of the first two, hopefully the next one will go back to a similar dark environment.

Re: Ghost of Tsushima: All Techniques and Best Techniques to Learn

DixyViking

I agree with Jimbodavis, stand off streak is great especially when combined with maxed out Sakai armour, which incidentally can be donned between initiating a stand off and playing it out. Being able to kill five enemy of a group without taking any damage is a massive advantage. Successful stand offs also refill your resolve meter too. Using stand off more often also is more honourable, which definitely has an effect on the weather in the game, this means a lot less playing the flute to stop it being constantly stormy.
I am on my third play through of this game and stand off is right behind perfect parry and perfect dodge in importance for me.
Other than this, the article is good advise, if your loving the stormy stealthy slaughter (I did,1st play through) follow the guide!
My tip for stand off is, release triangle when the first enemy moves his feet or legs depending on what you can see, for the rest strike when you see them raise their weapons to try and hit you.

Re: Control Fans Bemused by Free PS Plus Version for PS5, PS4

DixyViking

It is frustrating when you buy a game only to find it is free with PS+ in a month or two, this happened to me three times in the last year, but overall PS+ is good value especially if you get the service in the sale. It might be nice to have some notification that s game is likely to be free some time in the next 12 months, then people can make a considered purchase without feeling conned.

Re: Feature: Ghost of Tsushima - 7 Things We Want from Future Updates

DixyViking

I would like to see temporary weapon honing for fully upgraded katana and bow, perhaps a 10% damage boost that lasts for 7 game days. I have had no use for the resources collected since the middle of act 2.
I also think that outposts being recaptured by Mongols would really help to give the game longevity. For me new game+ would only be useful for playing the harder difficulties as you can get every perk in one play through, so you would have zero progression with new game+.

Re: PlayStation Shares Some Gobsmacking Ghost of Tsushima Player Stats

DixyViking

I am nearing completion of the game now and have very much enjoyed it, but I haven't been able use any iron, steel or gold since half way through Act 2. I would like to see an upgrade like weapon honing following the weapons being enhanced to maximum, perhaps a further 10% bonus damage that would last for a game week.
