Fortnite maker Epic is, perhaps unsurprisingly, all-in on generative AI – proudly so.
It released various videos earlier this week, showing how it’s incorporating the controversial technology into its workflow, from concept art creation through to environmental models and everything in between.
Separately to this, the dev revealed today that it’s collaborating with several games for future Fortnite crossovers, including Sonic Racing Crossworlds, Control Resonant, and Vampire Survivors.
But UK dev Poncle – the studio behind the acclaimed bullet heaven game – has released a statement, saying it’s “reviewing” its partnership with Epic following the company’s commitment to generative AI.
Writing on Reddit, a spokesperson for the studio said:
“Following today’s news about gen AI usage by Epic to create all sorts of game assets, including Fortnite characters, we’re currently ‘reviewing’ our collaboration with Fortnite. We’ll let you know if anything moves forward.”
I suppose the concern for Poncle here is having its IP associated with generative AI, especially if it’s used to help conceptualise Vampire Survivors characters within Fortnite.
Obviously the indie dev has had a lot of success these past few years, so it doesn’t necessarily need Epic’s money here. It’ll be interesting to see whether the parties can come to an agreement, or if Vampire Survivors’ content will be removed from Fortnite’s roadmap entirely.
