You Couldn't Make It Up! Xbox Accidentally Uploads Gears of War PS5 Trailer 1

Update []:

Following the accidental emergence of a trailer confirming Gears of War: E-Day was planned for the PS5, Xbox marketing bigwig Aaron Greenberg has claimed the cancellation of the release was not a last minute decision.

Responding to The Verge journalist Tom Warren, he said:

“I can confirm this is not true [that the port was cancelled last minute]. We just limited the knowledge of this news to a very small internal group. Intention was to share this news first with our players and everyone watching showcase.”

So they spent years making the game, cut the trailer, submitted the release to PEGI, and notified retailers just to maintain the element of surprise? Right.

Original Story: We now have definitive proof that the PS5 version of Gears of War: E-Day was cancelled last minute before the Xbox Showcase this weekend.

In a delisted Xbox Podcast video, spotted by fans on ResetEra before it was removed, Microsoft has accidentally uploaded a video clip clearly showing a PS5 logo at the end of the third-person shooter’s trailer.

While it’s not a huge surprise in hindsight – journalist Jeff Grubb had reported there’s an almost complete version of the port sitting on a hard drive somewhere – this shows just how unbelievably reactionary Microsoft is acting here.

In his post-show interview, boss Matt Booty failed to really explain Xbox’s approach to exclusivity, and when faced with tough questions earlier in the day, Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball dropped a “no comment” on the situation.

Now we know The Coalition had cut and submitted a Gears of War: E-Day trailer with a PS5 logo in it; the game was rated for release on Sony’s system by PEGI and physical listings were rattling around on retailer databases up until yesterday.

You really couldn’t make any of this up, could you?
